MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

WOKE • SAFETY • CITY • CRIME • POLITICS

** It is obscene that Mira Costa has rejected a female student from the Girl’s varsity tennis squad in favor of a male player. Not only did the school destroy her rights, but they will now harm multiple girls at SoCal schools who will be forced to compete against and usually lose to a male. I made brief remarks to this effect at a recent MBUSD board meeting. Not that that will have any effect. MBUSD, as we all know, is a parochial school system under the Church of Gender Ideology. Beyond the school district, assembly member Al Muratscuhi needs to answer for this. He voted for the bill ending Girl’s rights to single-sex sports (AB-1266) and is a zealous supporter of gender ideology. —- RD, Manhattan Beach

** Mr. Bowes’ request we respect the privacy of MBUSD students seems a disingenuous attempt to squash the conversation. There is no privacy left to be respected. This poor kid had been stripped of it years ago in an open letter from the father. We should all be loving toward transgender kids, especially those to whom irreversible physical harm has been done before the age of consent. However, the MBUSD Board is not asking for love and kindness. MBUSD Board is imposing affirmation and celebration of cross-sex medical interventions on minors, and MBUSD Board is not setting that just on adults but also on children and adolescent girls. This is the MBUSD Board’s specific decision. Even if BOARD members wrap themselves up in the edicts of the California Interscholastic Federation and the US Department of Education, their decision is nonetheless a violation of Title IX, which requires sexual equality for women not because of their “gender identity” but precisely because of their biological distinction. Other school districts have recognized that and are ready to take on the challenge to the Supreme Court if necessary. MBUSD Board, instead, has decided to sacrifice MBUSD girls to the prevailing woke gender orthodoxy because they agree with it and believe in it. And this is shameful. —- Lucia La Rosa, Manhattan Beach

** It’s a start, Manhattan Beach: Under Manhattan Beach’s law, E-bike riders younger than 18 must wear helmets. All riders must be in marked bike lanes on streets. Bicycles cannot ride on sidewalks or pedestrian-only roads (called “walk streets”), in plazas, on grass areas and lawns, on the Strand, at the Civic Center, at the library, or in parking lots and structures owned by the city, county or state. All riders must abide by traffic signals. All riders must yield to pedestrians. A 20 mph speed limit will be enforced on the beach bike trail. —- Fred R., Manhattan Beach

** I hope you all in Manhattan Beach received the info in your mail on the new proposed Storm and Drain taxes (they call them fees). It included a protest form that you can mail in. Please remember to send your protest form by November 6 if you want to stop this new tax. You only need 50% plus one to defeat this. You can find out more information or get a form at www.manhattanbeach.gov/stormdrainfee or you can contact Julie Bondarchuk at 310-802-5564 or email at jbond@manhattanbeach.gov —- Doreen Yusifzai, Manhattan Beach

** Regarding Stewart Fournier interview – I read with interest the interview with Stewart Fournier who ran for Manhattan Beach City Council last year and lost. In one statement he refers to Manhattan Beach as a “densely democratic town.” Actually that is not true. 42% of registered voters in 2020 were registered Democrats and 58% were Republican or No political preference. What is also interesting is how the local residents vote on initiatives. There were twelve ballot measures voted on in the 2020 election. Manhattan Beach voters voted the Republican position on nine of the twelve. This includes rejecting issuing more bonds for Stem Cell research, rejecting increasing property taxes on commercial property, rejecting bringing back affirmative action, opposing letting 17 year olds vote in primary elections, opposing ending Proposition 13 protections for inherited property, opposing increasing rent control by cities (this was rejected 75% to 25%), opposing Expanding Dialysis Clinic requirements, and opposing ending cash bail. The voters supported the initiative supported by the Republicans and opposed by the Democrats that gutted AB5 and once again made app. based drivers (Uber and Lyft) independent contractors. It is pretty clear from this that many voters do not support the agenda of the Democratic party. Even in the entire State of California voters agreed with the Republican position on seven of the twelve propositions. The question is, why do voters reject on a regular basis initiatives placed on the ballot by the Democratic Party, and then continue to vote for the people whose policies they oppose. —- Russ Lesser, Former MB Mayor

MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT RECENTLY APPROVED A NEW BAIL SCHEDULE THAT IS SET TO TAKE EFFECT IN ALL OF LA COUNTY ON OCTOBER 1ST?

** All this will do is increase the amount of shoplifting, petty theft, etc. by repeat offenders who don’t really have to worry about being arrested or prosecuted. Another example of public officials disregarding the will of the people. Proposition 25, a measure that replaced cash bail with risk assessments was on the 2020 November election. It was opposed by 57% of Manhattan Beach voters and was also opposed by a majority of all California voters. —- Russ Lesser, Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

** “The purpose of bail was to ensure that the defendant continues to appear for trials and doesn’t flee. If they don’t make court appearances, they forfeit the money and the court may issue an arrest warrant. With the new bail schedule, many defendants will be cited or booked and released, then flee. Of course, they will sign a promise to appear and in many instances an arrest warrant will be issued when they fail to appear. The bottom line is without bail being posted, the likelihood of defendants fleeing increases significantly. As for its impact on Manhattan Beach, it may be just another policy that erodes law and order in our community, like failing to prosecute misdemeanors.” —- Mark Burton, Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

** Implementing zero-bail policies represents an insane gamble with our communities’ safety, likely to increase crime rather than alleviate it. While proponents argue that these policies address socio-economic disparities, they fail to acknowledge the potential consequences on crime rates and public security. Zero-bail policies remove the financial deterrent, encouraging defendants to attend court hearings and comply with the law. Without this accountability, individuals charged with crimes might be tempted to re-offend, knowing they can easily evade immediate consequences. This leniency sends a dangerous message: criminal actions bear no immediate repercussions, leading to a potential surge in criminal activities. Buckle up! —- Sara Garcia, El Segundo

WILD WEST – ANOTHER ARMED ROBBERY AND SHOOTING IN MANHATTAN BEACH IN BROAD DAYLIGHT:

While the investigation is still ongoing to apprehend others involved in the crime, the Manhattan Beach Police Department requests the public’s assistance (contact Detective Hartnell at (310) 802-5127 or the MBPD Tip Line (310) 802-5171 if you wish to remain anonymous) in identifying subjects shown in this image from Prestige Jewelers’ camera system.

Manhattan Beach suffered another armed robbery and shooting in broad daylight on Saturday, August 7th, at the popular Prestige Jewelers on Sepulveda Blvd. in Manhattan Beach. According to the City’s announcement, The Manhattan Beach Police Department, and the Gardena and El Segundo, Police Departments responded to a smash-and-grab robbery at Prestige Jewelers at approximately 12:40 p.m. Saturday.

Five suspects, who were described as wearing hooded sweatshirts, used hammers to smash the jewelry showcases, and an employee of the store responded by using a firearm to shoot at the suspects. The suspects fled the store to awaiting vehicles, last seen fleeing southbound on Sepulveda Blvd. No employees were injured. However, some jewelry was taken.

“In partnership with the Manhattan Beach Police Department, the Gardena Police Department arrested a suspect involved in Saturday’s robbery at Prestige Jewelers. After an intensive investigation, law enforcement officials have successfully apprehended one of the suspects involved in the crime,” according to a September 9 MBPD press release.

“This swift arrest should reassure the community that we have the most dedicated law enforcement agency and partners ensuring the safety of our community,” said Mayor Richard Montgomery. “We must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Together, we will continue working to keep Manhattan Beach a safe and thriving place for everyone.”

“In a time when the community is grieving the loss of one of our heroes, our number one priority remains steadfast in keeping the entire City of Manhattan Beach safe,” Montgomery said. “We are grateful for the assistance from the Gardena and El Segundo Police Departments, who have stepped up to assist our Police Department in apprehending the offenders involved in this crime.”

ACTIVE UNDERGROUND UTILITY ASSESSMENT DISTRICTS

Two north Manhattan Beach neighborhoods will soon have underground power, cable, internet, and phone connections. MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Patrick T. Brown

If you’ve been reading any news about wildfires this summer – from Canada to Europe to Maui – you will surely get the impression that they are mostly the result of climate change. Here’s the AP: Climate change keeps making wildfires and smoke worse. Scientists call it the “new abnormal.” And PBS NewsHour: Wildfires driven by climate change are on the rise – Spain must do more to prepare, experts say. And The New York Times: How Climate Change Turned Lush Hawaii Into a Tinderbox. And Bloomberg: Maui Fires Show Climate Change’s Ugly Reach. I am a climate scientist. And while climate change is an important factor affecting wildfires over many parts of the world, it isn’t close to the only factor that deserves our sole focus.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Director Scott Houston

West Basin Municipal Water District

Q: HOW DID YOU FIRST GET ASSOCIATED WITH THE WEST BASIN WATER DISTRICT?
A: I first learned about West Basin Municipal Water District on a community tour of the agency’s Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility in El Segundo. After the tour, I was hooked! I was fascinated by the wastewater recycling process happening right here in our backyard. It also was eye-opening to understand West Basin’s essential work to ensure our communities have the water they need.

Q: WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU DO ON BEHALF OF MANHATTAN BEACH AND THE SOUTH BAY COMMUNITIES?
A: I serve as an elected member of the Board of Directors of West Basin, a position I have held since 2014. Much like city council, my role as a Director is governance of our local water district that entails setting policy and our strategic vision, as well as approving our annual budget. As a board member, I am focused on West Basin’s local infrastructure and operations while also participating in water policy discussions at the state and federal levels. Decisions made in Sacramento and D.C. can have major impacts on our local water supplies and operations, so that is a critical part of our work on behalf of the 17 cities and nearly 1 million residents we serve.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR JOB?
A: Major challenges include keeping up with the many moving parts in water. Hardly a day goes by when we’re not reading yet another story about extreme weather, droughts, floods or wildfires, whether at home or abroad. I’m also busy monitoring proposed legislation and making sure West Basin’s interests are part of the conversations at the state and federal levels. Lastly, a consistent challenge is keeping the public engaged about our water supply conditions and conservation. This is easier when we’re in a drought and it’s the front-page story every day. But when we have a wet winter, water issues are no longer a top priority for many. So it’s our job to continue educating and informing the public about West Basin’s work to secure our local water supplies, as well as the many programs we have such as grass replacement rebates that help us make permanent, long-term changes to our South Bay water demands.

Q: WHAT’S THE NUMBER ONE MISCONCEPTION ABOUT WATER IN THE SOUTH BAY?
A: Just because we had a wet winter does not mean our water troubles are over. If anything, we got a respite but we must remain focused on the long-term challenges for our water supplies across the West. Fortunately, our South Bay communities are highly engaged and have responded well to our calls to conserve water and use it more efficiently. And while many residents and businesses have taken advantage of our water savings programs, like replacing their lawns with drought tolerant native landscapes or installing rain barrels, we have many more who can participate and do their part.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: The Goonies! It’s one of the best movies ever. We must have worn out a few VHS tapes from watching it so often!

Keep an eye on this guy. He’s always wearing the hat. White, early 20s. A new homeless person. Won’t accept help. He’s starting to become aggressive with people and is out at night taking photos, etc. Antagonistic to police and has a record. One minute, he is friendly, and then, in an instant, he gets violent. Be careful. He covers a lot of ground. All the beaches. Ardmore trail, etc.

MB Weekly Reader Poll Reveals Overwhelming Local Sentiment – 91% Believe Late Senator Dianne Feinstein Stayed In Office Way Too Long:

In a recent poll conducted by MB Weekly, a staggering 91% of respondents expressed their belief that the late Senator Dianne Feinstein stayed in office far beyond her effective tenure. The poll, conducted with a diverse sample of MB Weekly readers, highlights the public sentiment on the issue of long-serving politicians. Respondents across party lines and demographics voiced a shared concern, indicating a widespread desire for fresh perspectives and new leadership in public office. The results of this poll serve as a powerful testament to the importance of addressing concerns related to prolonged political tenures. MB Weekly remains committed to providing unbiased and insightful analysis, reflecting the pulse of the area on critical issues that shape our democracy. “The whole thing was both tragic and absurd,” said long-time Manhattan Beach homeowner Phillip C.

At Last, Manhattan Beach Strictly Regulates Where And How E-Bikes Can Be Used:

New regulations governing electric and motorized bicycles are now effective in Manhattan Beach, and offenders may face a range of fines.
The “urgency ordinance” became effective September 6 and contains safety rules including:

  • Prohibits riding on City sidewalks, plazas, grass areas, the Strand, parking structures owned or operated by the City, County, or State, and Veterans Parkway.
  • Prohibits riding at speeds over 15 miles per hour on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (i.e. Beach Bike Path), and maintains the current “Walk Only Zone” on both sides of the pier.
  • Requires wearing of properly strapped helmets for all riders under 18 years of age.
  • Requires riders to use bike lanes where possible, and on streets without bike lanes, to ride close to the right curb or edge of roadway.
  • Requires riders to ride in single file and not more than two abreast.
  • Prohibits riding on the back of a bicycle or e-bike without a seat.
  • Prohibits speeding, racing, or stunt activity.
  • Reaffirms requirements to yield to pedestrians at all times.

“Violations of this ordinance will result in a misdemeanor and a fine up to $500 for the first violation, $750 for the second violation within one year; and $1,000 for each additional violation within one year of the first violation,” according to a city press release. “If the violation is committed by a minor, the minor’s parents may be cited and fined for violations of the ordinance.”

“This commonsense approach to e-bikes is long overdue by the City!” said Howard K., a longtime Manhattan Beach resident and business owner.

Hofreiter brings more than 45 years of educational expertise to her commentary, most recently as vice principal of the acclaimed Mira Costa High School

When pieces of goodness collide, you want to be near the fallout! Plan on being at the Manhattan Beach Pier on Sunday, October 29, for the Skechers 15th Annual Pier to Pier Friendship Walk. As one person said, “It’s 8:00 on Sunday morning, and everyone on both sides of Manhattan Beach Boulevard is pumped up.” Schools throughout the South Bay are competing to raise funds and be awarded prizes. Teams, schools, and individual walkers have raised $1,652,351 as of right now! The goal is $2,500,000, and that is reachable! Find your local school or go on the Skechers website and sponsor a team or walker! Better yet, raise funds yourself and walk it. You will never see so many happy faces supporting individual schools and programs for people with special needs – pieces of goodness.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Zoe Hagglund

Q: WHAT DREW YOU TO THE FIELD OF REAL ESTATE?
A: I always had a keen interest in real estate, having lived my entire life in the South Bay, developing a passion for the realty business and homeownership before becoming a sales associate. I quickly realized the opportunity to view all kinds of property, cities, or other homes whether it be by the shore or elsewhere, to connect the right space with people all over the community, being in a highly concentrated area such as Los Angeles.

Q: WHY IS MANHATTAN BEACH THE RIGHT COMMUNITY FOR YOU TO BEGIN THIS JOURNEY IN?
A: As a key beach community in the South Bay, Manhattan Beach is a perfect area for me to offer my real estate services as a licensed agent. The city has an upscale, classy appeal, considering it was originally intended to be a resort before becoming the Manhattan Beach we now know and love. I enjoy exploring the astounding architecture there and the genuine community that has developed, all so close to beautiful beaches such as Bruce’s Beach! Additionally, as many families including mine have grown throughout the South Bay, I appreciate the opportunity to operate my real estate business in a community where my clients might lead me to their family or friends who also are in need of my services. Manhattan Beach is a beautiful location to recommend to my clients looking to buy their first or next home, and is also an optimal place to sell quality properties.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: I am a major fan of Avatar, directed by James Cameron.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN THE MANHATTAN BEACH AREA?
A: I enjoy a delicious dinner with exceptional service in our local South Bay communities, and my favorite restaurants to dine at in Manhattan Beach are Mercado, BOA Steakhouse, Sushi Roku, and Barsha.

Q: WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF GETTING STARTED IN REAL ESTATE?
A: In my opinion, the most challenging element of getting started in the real estate business is discipline when it comes to a proper schedule and efficient work as an independent contractor. Apart from that, being a knowledgeable, professional real estate agent for individuals looking to buy or sell in the area becomes simple with practice and effort.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: I am a capricorn in Western astrology, and also study my charts frequently in Vedic astrology, so I am also considered a Cancer rising, Capricorn sun, and Scorpio moon.

Manhattan Beach Postal Carrier Attacked – Three Arrested:

Three males allegedly tried to break into a USPS carrier’s car, leading to a police chase culminating in a car crash and the defendants’ arrests. The incident happened at 5 p.m. on August 22. Police say the carrier delivered mail on the 2600 Block of Elm Street in Manhattan Beach when he heard smashing glass. The carrier observed two males in his car when he returned. Broken back windows and mailbags littered the floor. They yelled profanities at him when he asked what they were doing. They then entered a Chevrolet Silverado. A third man allegedly drove at the postal worker to hurt or frighten him. A USPS worker phoned MBPD after the suspects drove off. After a high-speed chase, patrol officers lost the vehicle near Redondo Beach. After a collision, MBPD officers spotted the Silverado on Aviation Boulevard at 6 p.m. MBPD caught the suspects as they fled the car.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia (El Segundo)

In an era dominated by the gig economy and service-based industries, the DEMANDS for tips are on the rise, yet tipping itself remains far from ubiquitous. Walk into any cafe, order food from your favorite delivery app, or catch a ride with a rideshare service, and you’re likely to encounter prompts encouraging customers to tip generously. These digital nudges aim to foster a culture of gratitude, but are they genuinely translating into fair compensation for those providing services? A recent YouGov survey of 1,000 Americans revealed a stark reality: most people confine their tipping habits to just two scenarios – restaurants and hairdressers or barbers. While these are undoubtedly deserving recipients, the broader spectrum of service providers still struggles to secure a fair share. Hotel cleaners, concierges, Uber drivers, baristas, delivery drivers, and even bartenders often find themselves on the receiving end of minimal or nonexistent gratuities. How long will it be before the self-checkout stands at Ralph’s “ask” for tips?

5. ** Female starvation as a spectacle has a very long history. But now ‘thinfluencers’ have millions of followers. —- Addison F., Manhattan Beach

6. ** A male bicycle traveling north on the bike path without protection gear (why not… it’s the beach) hit a pedestrian exiting the stairs. A bike rider hit someone while traveling at a high pace, bending the front rim. The pedestrian didn’t check both ways before entering the bike path. —- Mike M., Redondo Beach

7. ** Should members of Congress have to wear formal clothing? Well, not only members of Congress but Mayor Montgomery and Councilman Napolitano should also during public meetings. —- Name withheld by request

8. ** Would it be wrong to reach out to my biological mother for financial help? I was adopted when I was just 2 months old. I was lucky to have wonderful parents, but they are in poor health, and it’s affecting both of them physically. —- Deborah L., Manhattan Beach

9. ** Hunter is a cool waitress at Tin Roof. —- Andy P., Manhattan Beach

10. ** Authorities announced that a woman was killed in a fatal traffic collision with a drunken driving suspect Monday night in Redondo Beach. According to the Redondo Beach Police Department, the crash was reported at about 6:39 p.m. on Sept. 18 at the intersection of Rindge Lane and Artesia Boulevard. —- Editor’s Note

11. ** If you own a restaurant, trying to hire people as a process is a little like gargling with razor blades, only worse. —- Lily T., Manhattan Beach (My husband owns two restaurants)

12. ** The Cancer Support Community South Bay has a couple of new leaders. Jillian Van Leuven is the nonprofit’s new executive director and CEO, and Kelli Vieweg is the new president of the board of directors, CSC announced recently. —- Editor’s Note

14. ** It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it. —- Howie P., Hermosa Beach

18. ** Without bail, I can only say that I fear for our society. —- Renee C., Manhattan Beach

19. ** I vehemently disagree with the “special exception” given to John Fetterman to dress like a slob in the U.S. Senate. It’s not cute. It’s not funny. It’s not eccentric. There are no health reasons for it. It is an honor and a privilege to be elected to the Senate. One must dress to respect the office and the country. —- Rigby H., Manhattan Beach (and a loyal Democrat)

20. ** I can personally vouch for the effectiveness of license plate readers. Some years ago, the van we used for our surf camps was stolen along with all the equipment, which was a disaster. It was stolen in Hermosa Beach but reported to all the police in the area. About a week later, the thieves (no one said they were smart) drove into M.B. on Manhattan Beach Blvd, and the license plate was read, and the police nailed them. —- Russ L., Manhattan Beach

21. ** Disapprove of No Bail! —- Ed M., Manhattan Beach

22. ** The Cheddar and Bacon Scones at Tommy and Atticus are addicting. I can’t start my day without getting sconed first. —- Paul W., Manhattan Beach

23. ** I Agree….strongly with Russ Lesser. —- Tom A., Manhattan Beach

24. ** Disapprove of No Bail! – “LOCK ’EM UP!” may feel good to say. However, the real-world situation of overcrowded incarceration is unsustainable. However, I believe it is not either/or. Ankle tags, restraining orders, probation, and other measures can help protect the public while creating a path of sanctions that lead repeat offenders to more permanent incarceration. Some people are not safe to be in society. Sad but true. While it may be costly, we must put some people away. —- Dave H., Manhattan Beach (Former State Corrections Prison Counselor)

25. ** I strongly disapprove of zero bail. —- Larelle R., Manhattan Beach
