This week, City Hall and the Manhattan Beach County Library held a ceremony to officially reveal the almost 100-foot-long painting “Midnight Blues” by artist Bo Bridges.

Update On Crime In Manhattan Beach:

** Six Burglaries:
During the first week of April, there were six burglaries in Manhattan Beach, including three that the police suspect may be connected because of their similarities. The six break-ins all happened between March 30 and April 5. The three incidents, which seem to have been connected, all took place between 7 and 9 p.m. Targeting the master bedroom, all three homes were entered by a window on the second floor. Each of the residences had jewelry that had been taken. To prevent crime, never leave anything in the backyard where someone could climb up. Additionally, security cameras, sufficient lighting, and burglary alarms are all beneficial to us, according to MBPD Sgt. Andy Abreu. The 600 block of 18th Street, the 300 block of S. Dianthus, and the 800 block of 11th St. were the locations of the three burglaries that may be connected. In addition, Abreau advised becoming a member of Neighborhood Watch and interacting with your neighbors if you are away from home for an extended period of time. Additionally, Abreu suggested locals contact the MBPD if they notice anything odd in their neighborhood. “None of us are immune from crime,” Abreu said. The most important thing is to report suspicious activity. Call the police if you notice anything strange going on in your neighborhood, and Abreu said they will send a team out to investigate. For non-emergencies, dial 310-545-4566 of the MBPD, and for crises, dial 911.

** Crime Figures:
The MBPD published crime data on April 6 – April 12. Three assaults, two residential break-ins, four car break-ins, and five thefts were among the crimes. According to the MBPD, 14 car accidents (four hit-and-run, two with injuries) and 17 arrests were made. The 38 crime reports collected included two for residential burglaries. One of the break-ins included a home that was left unlocked and resulted in property damage. Domestic disagreements resulted in all three assaults. And in three of the auto burglaries, Toyota Priuses’ catalytic converters were taken. According to MBPD, Toyota Prius cars are frequently targeted for their catalytic converters. Replacing these parts will cost a lot of money. To install a catalytic converter shield or cage, seek advice from a mechanic.

The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Michelle Morales

Owner Arco AmPm Gas Station and Mini-Mart

Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO OWN A BUSINESS IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: An interesting opportunity presented itself and I’ve always been one to welcome a challenge. As a first time business owner and a female it was a bit scary of an idea, as I have only ever pumped my own gas. So being close to home and the support and encouragement of friends convinced me to do it. But the support I have gotten from the community that I didn’t already know has been unbelievably encouraging. Manhattan Beach has such a fun and incredible community and the station has such a huge local presence. I meet the grown-ups who tell me they used to buy candy there as a kid. Everyone has passed through here at some point and there is something special about that.

Q: WHAT IS THE SECRET SAUCE TO YOUR SUCCESS IN BUSINESS?
A: Our customers are truly the best. They are loyal, they are funny, and they care about my employees. I like to run the store as an extension of my family. My employees are the glue, they mean the world to me, and we try to keep it light and have fun. You may hear Latin music playing and laughing throughout the day.

Q: I UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE AN UNUSUAL WINE COLLECTION IN YOUR BUSINESS. CAN YOU EXPLAIN?
A: We curated the MB Wine Cellar with everyone in mind. If you need a great wine for a hostess on the way to a dinner party … we got you covered. Want to try to something new and exotic … we got you covered. On the way to beach, and need some Rosé in a can, we got you covered. Filling up and don’t want to have to go to the grocery store also for your favorite Pinot or Sauvignon Blanc with dinner … we are here for you. Look out for Michelle’s wine of the week specials at cost.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: Shawshank Redemption, it takes you through every feeling and makes you wonder if given that fate what you would do. This has been my motto since my teen years “get busy living or get busy dying.”

My neighbors and I are deeply disappointed and confused over the new MBPD patrol car logo. The new logos look more like a vehicle driven by a city clerk than a Police car. You can barely identify the new logo as an MBPD patrol car! Why has the “Police” font decreased in size? See for yourself in the photos I’ve included. Can we ask your readers for input? Other cities have clear, prominent, Patriotic logos … as a matter of public safety, I think MBPD patrol cars should represent strength & clearly identify our department & city … Don’t you?

“WOULD YOU RATHER” INTERVIEW

WOULD YOU RATHER MEET GEORGE WASHINGTON OR THE CURRENT PRESIDENT?
–George Washington probably, since I’ll never have another chance to meet somebody from the 1700s.

WOULD YOU RATHER LOSE YOUR VISION OR YOUR HEARING?
–Neither but I guess my hearing. Either would be unfortunate.

WOULD YOU RATHER WORK MORE HOURS PER DAY, BUT FEWER DAYS OR WORK FEWER HOURS PER DAY, BUT MORE DAYS?
–More hours per day. If I’m “on,” I’m on, let’s make the most of it!

WOULD YOU RATHER LISTEN TO MUSIC FROM THE ’70s OR MUSIC FROM TODAY?
–If this means my wife can no longer listen to Taylor Swift, then she’ll probably divorce me if I don’t say current music.

WOULD YOU RATHER BECOME SOMEONE ELSE OR JUST STAY YOU?
–Definitely me. I love me and don’t want to be anyone else!

WOULD YOU RATHER BE BATMAN OR SPIDERMAN?
–Batman. Christian Bale version though!

WOULD YOU RATHER BE STUCK ON A BROKEN SKI LIFT OR IN A BROKEN ELEVATOR?
–Broken ski lift. Fresh air, cool breeze, and a much better view!

“Gentle parenting” or “permissive parenting” is the newest craze among liberal/progressive families. You cannot coerce your child into acting in any way with this strategy. You need to ask, beg, and talk to others. This is very annoying to a doctor, for example, who needs your child to open wide for an examination.

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
71% THINK E-BIKE DEATH IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME IN MANHATTAN BEACH

A substantial majority of MB Weekly readers in Manhattan Beach and surrounding South Bay communities feel that a death involving a young person on an e-bike is just a matter of time. “The recklessness that I see daily is outrageous,” said Jake R., a longtime Manhattan Beach resident, “kids blow through stop signs hourly, and frequently I see young people not wearing helmets and looking at their phones.” E-bikes have become especially popular with young people in the downtown Manhattan Beach community. “Police need to start issuing tickets immediately. Kids think the whole thing is a joke and someone will get killed! It is just a matter of time.”

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Chris Jacobson

Manhattan Beach

At approximately 2:45 p.m. Sunday, April 16th, driving up Longfellow, roughly 20 yards from approaching PCH, the light was yellow, and decided not to cross PCH. The light turned red, and I was stopped at the traffic light @ PCH. 2 girls on e-bikes pulled up behind me. Seconds later, a boy with NO helmet pulls up, passes me, and runs a red light that just turned red. A white Subaru slowed down and came within 2-3 feet of hitting the kid. The boy swerves into oncoming traffic on PCH, sticks his butt back at the suburb, turns his head with his tongue out, smiles & shakes his butt. I asked the girls at the stoplight, “Do you know that kid?” They shook their head “no” in complete fear & shock like I was of what almost happened. The light turned green, and the kid was waiting on the other side for the girls. I pulled over and told the kid, “You could have easily been hit.” He said verbatim, “Shut up f@cker.”

Manhattan Beach Will Develop Historical Records, Satellite Library:

The multipurpose facility will store Manhattan Beach Historical Society items: Manhattan Beach’s history will leave Polliwog Park’s modest red house. Manhattan Beach is creating a Polliwog Pavilion with the Los Angeles County Library to house its records. It will house and display all of the City’s historical records and be a small neighborhood library. At a recent meeting, the City Council unanimously adopted the plans and a collection policy for artifact management. The panel had the City’s Library Commission begin planning the new location early last year. Five years ago, the City discussed strategies to preserve failing artifacts in a wet, unclean storage room in a more than 100-year-old house without fire protection or smoke detectors.

Members Are Added To Manhattan Beach’s Task Force On Outdoor Dining:

The task committee will shortly start holding meetings to gather feedback from the local community regarding a citywide program for ongoing outdoor dining. Following their appointment at the City Council meeting last week, eight residents of Manhattan Beach will investigate the city’s outdoor dining alternatives. A long-term outdoor eating and business use program will be recommended to the City Council by the Outdoor eating Task Force, which has a total of 15 members. Officials declared in January that temporary outdoor dining in Manhattan Beach will stop after the COVID-19 State of Emergency in California, which concluded on February 28. Manhattan Beach is a little beach community, and of course everyone here loves being outside. Mayor Richard Montgomery stated, “We want to continue enjoying the lovely outdoor space while maintaining our small town family atmosphere. We are home to some of the top restaurants and businesses in Southern California. This task force will assist us in identifying the requirements of our neighborhood and in naturally developing a program that is particular to us. I am interested in seeing their suggestions.”

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Greg Newman

President/CEO Of Baja Sharkeez Restaurant Group

Greg Newman and Wife

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING A BUSINESS IN TODAY’S POST-COVID ENVIRONMENT?
A: We have been fortunate at Esperanza to have very little turnover in our core Team so staffing has not been an issue. Probably the most challenging thing has been trying to maintain fair prices and stay at or below average for our type of operation. Between minimum wage going to $15.50, skyrocketing food prices, high utilities, liquor and pretty much everything else it takes to run a restaurant it’s a challenge to keep prices down and still maintain a healthy profit margin. So in short, inflation.

Q: WHAT IS THE SECRET SAUCE OF MANHATTAN BEACH’S SUCCESS?
A: Esperanza has been spawned out of over 50 years of experience in the Mexican food and social gathering business. We have been perfecting our food menu, mixology program and design aesthetic since we opened Palmilla in Hermosa in 2011. We are constantly doing research on food and drinks and improving things every few months. The Team we have put together with our GM partner and mixologist John Fox is the other core success factor. Without our amazing Team the rest wouldn’t work.

Q: HAVE YOU HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE HOMELESS BOTHERING YOUR STAFF OR CUSTOMERS?
A: Yes, the homeless are occasionally an issue but doing business for years you learn how to talk to them and not say anything too abrasive to make the interaction worse. If you are kind but firm they eventually move on and if they don’t we call local PD and they usually show up pretty quickly to help us deal with the individual.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: It Sounds so typical but it has to be the original Top Gun. I saw it when I was 18 at the Manhattan Mann village theatre and it for some reason had a huge impact on me. I have most of the lines memorized. My buddy I saw it with joined the Navy the next day!

Q: HOW DOES ONE GET A RESERVATION AT ESPERANZA? IT IS ALWAYS PACKED.
A: We’re packed with people who made reservations a few weeks in advance. It’s easy just go to our website Esperanzamb.com and click on reservations, email us at reservations@esperanzamb.com or call us at 424-422-0057. We Love new customers!

Q: WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER RUNNING FOR CITY COUNCIL?
A: Although I think the hard work the city council does is such an important service to our community, and I respect all the effort and time they put in, I would be challenged to do the job I would want to do with everything else I have going on. I am on the MB BID board and I stay involved with local charities and Art galleries, etc.

In A Dispute Involving Short-Term Rentals, A Judge Ordered Manhattan Beach To Pay Legal Fees:

A judge in the Superior Court has mandated that the City of Manhattan Beach reimburse the legal costs of a resident who successfully contested the validity of the city’s prohibition on short-term rentals. Darby Keen, a city resident, was awarded $146,124 in legal fees by Judge Mitchell Beckloff. The costs were incurred when the City appealed the first ruling against the short-term rental prohibition that the City Council passed in 2019.

** As a concerned citizen, I believe that the best crime-fighting strategy is prevention, and this can be achieved by having more visible cops on the street. The police force should focus on proactively patrolling the streets, rather than merely reacting to crime incidents. It is crucial to recognize that crime prevention is more effective than crime-solving. When police officers are visible on the streets, potential criminals are deterred from committing crimes. This can be achieved by increasing the number of patrols, creating foot and bike patrols, and increasing community policing initiatives. By doing so, the police force can build trust and rapport with the community they serve and provide a visible presence that promotes safety. Moreover, it is essential to stop instructing police officers to behave as social workers. While some individuals may benefit from social services, it is not the primary role of law enforcement officers. Their primary role is to maintain public order and enforce the law. By focusing on their core responsibilities, they can effectively prevent and reduce crime, thereby ensuring the safety of the community. —- COMMENTARY by Sarah Garcia

** We should be incredibly proud and grateful to the Manhattan Beach Police Department. The truth is that investigators and officers from the MBPD worked all night long to pursue leads in the heist of Pasha Fine Jewelry. … in the early morning hours, SWAT units from the MBPD and Gardena Police Department executed a search warrant in the City of Los Angeles. Two children were detained in a different traffic stop from the five adults who were detained after the end of the chase last night. Both the car used in the pursuit and the vehicle the kids were driving contained jewelry and other goods that had been taken during the heist. —- COMMENTARY by Steve Revel

** With Council’s expansion of our MBPD force, it is now time for our Council to consider having its own City Prosecutor to prosecute misdemeanors, the quality-of-life crimes that are the foundation for law and order. Here’s the problem in that regard. Misdemeanor crimes in Manhattan Beach, such as theft, trespass, disturbing the peace, criminal threats, public intoxication, loitering, and resisting arrests, are not being prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney. Over time, this failure to prosecute will erode law and order. We are talking about hundreds of misdemeanors every year. Under existing state law, general law cities, such as Manhattan Beach, need only to obtain the perfunctory consent of the District Attorney to hire their own City Prosecutor for the prosecution of misdemeanor crimes. —- COMMENTARY by Mark Burton -Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

** Last weekend I decided to walk around downtown, stopping in some restaurants, getting ice cream, and enjoying this extraordinary area in our beautiful Manhattan Beach community. While the evening was splendid (though the weather was a bit cool), in my 2 1/2 hour downtown journey, I did not see one police officer downtown – either by foot or car. Isn’t that concerning, given the second Pasha armed robbery just a couple of weeks ago a few blocks from the police station? Given the significantly increased crime environment of the day, I don’t understand how anyone can think that’s a good idea. —- COMMENTARY by Darby Winston

** Beware: I got cash from Bank of America (inside the bank) at the Manhattan Village Shopping area on Saturday morning at about 10:45 a.m. It was in two envelopes as I left the bank. I held it with my purse blocking the view of it most of the walk to my car in the lot. I drove one minute to the CVS in the same shopping area. Went into the store for a few minutes. When I came out, I found that someone had broken my car windows, stolen the cash out of the closed console in my car, and then sped off. A witness saw the car speed away (black SUV) and even got a photo, but I probably won’t get the cash back. Clearly, this is a scheme – that is well-planned. Be extra careful!!! —- Commentary by Pamela Ashe, Hermosa Beach

7. ** I agree with Russ Lesser about the absurdity of building 400 low-cost units in Manhattan Beach. The concept sounds good, but the reality is impossible. It makes no sense. Thank you, Russ, for pointing out the facts; when generalizing, politicians don’t know what they are talking about. Perhaps, our city council members should speak up as well. Indeed this mandate is unenforceable. What’s the remedy? —- Dave Harris, Manhattan Beach

8. ** The governing body for track and field and other running-related athletic events, World Athletics, has announced that transgender female athletes who have been through male puberty will be excluded from world rankings competitions. Amen. —- Harvey F., Manhattan Beach

9. ** Emily C. said she needed help because the “emergency” money she gives her brother is spent on vacations. Help is on the way. A software program in development allows you to see how the money you “loaned” or “gave” was spent. Soon you will have evidence of how your brother spent the “emergency” money. This software would also be a must-have for anyone with a child away at college. —- Phil C., Manhattan Beach

10. ** I agree. Russ Lesser’s comments were accurate. Our state representatives need to support us, not unrealistic expectations. —- Steve Nicholson, Manhattan Beach

16. ** My best friend Mike died alone. That was how he lived, too. He ate alone. He slept alone. Aloneness was his natural state. At age 50, it was sepsis that officially did him in. But really, it was solitude. —- Henry E., Manhattan Beach
