FORMER MB MAYOR SUZANNE HADLEY BLASTS CITY COUNCIL’S SILENCE ON ARMED ROBBERIES:

Former Mayor Suzanne Hadley has expressed her disappointment and concern over the lack of communication from the current council regarding two armed robberies that occurred on the Strand during Father’s Day weekend. Hadley emphasizes the importance of transparency and timely information for residents when such incidents occur, citing the example of Beverly Hills, where the city promptly informs its residents in similar situations.

Hadley learned about the robberies through Mike Michalski’s newsletter, which arrived eight days after the incidents occurred. Despite being an informed resident who receives city emails and Nixle alerts and even serving as a Neighborhood Watch block captain, Hadley received no official communication from the elected officials regarding these heinous crimes. This lack of communication has led her to question the council’s commitment to public safety.

In analyzing the situation, Hadley presents two possible explanations for the city’s non-response. The first scenario suggests that the police chief and city manager informed the mayor and possibly the council about the robberies on June 17. Still, no action was taken to inform the public promptly. The second scenario suggests that the mayor and council were not disclosed by the police chief and city manager, raising questions about the flow of information within the city’s administration.

Hadley attended a recent “Coffee with the Mayor” event to verify the information she received. She was dismayed that the mayor was waiting for an in-person meeting with the police chief before disseminating any information to residents. Hadley argues that in today’s world of instant communication through cell phones and video conferencing, the delay caused by an in-person meeting is unjustifiable. Although the Neighborhood Watch report included a brief mention of the crimes, it only reached a limited number of residents, leaving the general public uninformed. Furthermore, the mayor mentioned that the council would discuss the events of June 17 at the next council meeting, which is scheduled for July. This delay in addressing the issue further undermines the council’s commitment to timely action.

Hadley also points out additional concerns about the city’s approach to crime. She mentions police department reports to Neighborhood Watch that seem to obscure crime trends instead of writing them. Furthermore, she raises the issue of at least one council member who supports District Attorney George Gascon, a figure controversial for his approach to crime, as evidenced by their campaign donations and appearances together. Finally, Hadley expresses her disappointment with the mayor for not endorsing the recall of District Attorney Gascon and mentioning Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in a favorable light, which drew audible gasps from the audience.

In conclusion, Hadley hopes for reasonable explanations regarding the lack of communication about the June 17 robberies. She emphasizes the need for reassurance that the council and the chief of police prioritize residents’ safety. If not, she questions who will protect the community’s well-being.

Meet Tara Klein

Luxury Real Estate

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN THE REAL ESTATE GAME IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I have been in real estate in Manhattan Beach for 10 years! My Linktree: https://linktr.ee/tarakleinrealestate

Q: WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE MANHATTAN BEACH COMMUNITY?
A: I love the work hard, play hard attitude in Manhattan Beach. The property values in the area have skyrocketed in recent years due to the excellent school system, family-friendly amenities, proximity to the airport, and healthy lifestyle.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR PREDICTION FOR REAL ESTATE PRICES IN MANHATTAN BEACH AND THEN THE NEXT YEAR?
A: It depends on the price point, but it is very much still a Seller’s Market. Inventory is historically low which means that the demand for Manhattan Beach homes is significantly lower than the supply. Properties that are priced right have multiple offers and are closing with record high sales prices. If someone is thinking about selling in the near future there is no better time like the present based on what I know now. No Realtor can predict too far into the future. People don’t want to sell and give up their 2.5% to 3.5% mortgage rates!

Q: WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB DAY-TO-DAY?
A: Right now the lack of inventory is very challenging for me. In addition, there are more licensed Realtors in a relatively small area compared to Los Angeles as a whole.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: I am a Virgo and the sign’s characteristics describe me to a T.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: One of my favorite movies of all time is “An Affair to Remember,” with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The other movie that I love is, “The Green Book.”

Q: WHAT ARE THREE OR FOUR OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN THE MANHATTAN BEACH AREA?
A: I am a HUGE fan of Slay Steak & Fish, Slay Italian, Nando, and Simmzy’s.

Manhattan Beach Studios Affected By Writers Guild Strike:

For the first time in 15 years, the Writers Guild of America is on strike, and after seven weeks of the strike, writers are now picketing in front of the Manhattan Beach Studios property. Because of failed contract negotiations, the Writers’ Strike got underway on May 1. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents significant production studios like Disney, Paramount, and Warner Discovery, and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the major union for writers in television, film, and new media, engage in negotiations every three years. Major disagreements about compensation and regulation of future technologies, notably Artificial Intelligence, arose during this year’s negotiations.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Aaron Garisek

General Manager Of Tin Roof Bistro

Q: AS THE GENERAL MANAGER OF TIN ROOF FOR THE LAST EIGHT YEARS, WHAT IS THE SECRET SAUCE FOR ITS GREAT SUCCESS?
A: Great Question. I believe our recipe for success is Hospitality. Service is an act, and highly important, but hospitality is the way you can make someone feel. I think hiring a team of like-minded individuals that love to put smiles on faces and make emotional connections creates a vibe in the restaurant that guests love and look forward to returning to.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB DAY-TO-DAY?
A: As a GM I have several responsibilities including financial reporting, forecasting and labor/cost analysis. I absolutely LOVE being on the floor in the dining room interacting with our guests but staring at a computer screen? …Not my favorite.

Q: WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: As affluent of a community as this is, the down to earth, warm, family vibe is so pleasant and fun to serve. It’s the Bentley’s and board shorts crowd all day long.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: That’s a tough one! I guess Pulp Fiction but I have about 20 others that fit into this category.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE DISH TO EAT AT TIN ROOF?
A: Well ask me tomorrow and I’ll tell you something different but today I’m having the Summer Vegetable Salad with Salmon. Super flavorful but also quite healthy. I always tell guests to “Pin the tail on the menu.” Close your eyes and point and you’ll be happy with whatever you get.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: My birthday is 6/21 so I’m on the cusp of Gemini and Cancer. The summer solstice. I have no idea what that means but I guess folks that DO know tell me I’m more of a Gemini.

Q: WILL YOU EVER RESUME LUNCH AT TIN ROOF?
A: Never say never but no time soon. We learned a lot about our business model over the past few years and with our concept being so labor intensive with a pure scratch kitchen, it makes more sense to put all that time and effort into our dinner service and Brunch on the weekends. We are starting to offer brunch on holiday Mondays and will be doing the same on Fridays in December. Mark it on your calendar!

Firefighters’ Union, Manhattan Beach Reach 3-Year Labor Agreement:

The City Council recently approved a new three year labor agreement (July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2026) with the Manhattan Beach Firefighters’ Association (MBFA) that includes a 10% cost of living salary increase spread out over three years for Manhattan Beach firefighters as well as the following benefits: 2.5% collateral duty pay for special certifications, increase and expansion in technical specialty pay, increase in acting pay, increase in total number of payable holiday hours, sick leave can be cashed out or put towards deferred compensation, and an increase the number of employees per shift who may use vacation time. “City Management has worked hand-in-hand with the Firefighters’ Association to reach this agreement that both respects the work and sacrifice of our firefighters who put their lives on the line each day and is fiscally responsible on behalf of the taxpayers,” said Mayor Richard Montgomery. “I am thankful for the City management team, union representatives, and the professionalism, courage, and teamwork it took to come to this agreement.” Manhattan Beach Fire Department has 27 firefighters/paramedics, engineers/paramedics, and captains/paramedics. “The Manhattan Beach Fire Department is home to some of the most talented firefighters in the field. I applaud the City for coming to the table to ensure that our wages are fair and current,” said MBFA President Rudy Mejia.

Officer Of The Year:

At a recent meeting, the Manhattan Beach City Council honored the year’s top firefighters and police officers. The Police Officer of the Year was awarded to investigator Seth Hartnell (shown in a 2019 Facebook post being welcomed as a new addition to MBPD), a graduate of Manhattan Beach’s Mira Costa High School. He was a Police Explorer in 2009, during his sophomore year of high school. Since then, Hartnell’s colleagues have recognized him for his dedication to the organization as a top representative on the Homeless Outreach and Mental Health Teams.

Cannabis-infused mocktails, seltzers, and alcohol-free wines are becoming available on the market as recreational marijuana becomes legal in more jurisdictions; these products are frequently marketed as a quick route to a healthier high. These aren’t the CBD-infused drinks that have been popular over the past 10 years; CBD is a substance found in hemp and marijuana that doesn’t make you high. THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, is used to make marijuana drinks, and consumers are open to trying them. However, medical professionals and cannabis experts warned there are many uncertainties and additional hazards associated with marijuana beverages.

Manhattan Beach

I tried everything I could think of to move on from my divorce and return to myself a few years ago. Since my life was so brutally uncertain, I “cheated” on my usual therapist by attending an intuitive one. The promise of a bit of foresight is consoling when your life is painfully uncertain. I also experimented with acupuncture, yoga, reiki, and meditation. Even though I’m not athletic, I started running, which only lasted for about a year. (I refer to this time as the “5K to Couch” era.) I made the most of every opportunity to be with my kids. I experienced a new love. I migrated. I kept writing and writing. These items made me feel more balanced and complete. But my friendships with women have been the most therapeutic. We don’t talk about divorce’s terrible potential enough. Years ago, I thought I was parachute jumping with another person; we were “in it together.” I was suddenly alone, unattached, and plummeting through the bright blue sky.

Nothing goes up forever. Over the many years I have owned South Bay real estate, I have seen prices go above what it would cost to build a new place. When that happens, there’s usually a correction … sooner or later. While mortgage interest rates remain higher than they were up to 2021, real estate appreciation in MB (yes, even MB) will stay somewhat muted.

In the largest reader poll yet done by MB Weekly, a landslide majority of 88% opposed the current exposure of Manhattan Beach 7th-grade students to discussions of anal sex in the classroom. The average age of 7th graders is 12 years old. Most of the readers who participated in the poll claimed they had no idea that this type of discussion was happening in the Manhattan Beach classroom. “It’s hard to believe,” commented Alicia S., a longtime Manhattan Beach resident and parent. “I had no idea, none whatsoever.” Former MB school board candidate Christy Barnes said “My 7th grader is 12 years old. Anal Sex was discussed under the guise that to avoid getting a sexually transmitted disease (infection) during Anal Sex, one should wear a condom. I believe this is going too far for our 12-year-old children.”

According To Beach Pollution Report, Beaches In Manhattan Beach Sparkle:

According to Heal the Bay’s 33rd Annual Beach Report Card, Southern California’s beaches received lower scores this year due to recent severe rainfall and millions of gallons of sewage that were accidentally discharged into the ocean. Based on fecal-indicator bacterial pollution levels reported by regional health organizations, the NGO provides letter grades to beaches throughout California. With A+ ratings in two different locations along the city’s coast, Manhattan Beach performed far better than other beaches in Los Angeles County.

A Task Committee In Manhattan Beach Will Begin Preparing For Long-Term Outdoor Dining:

After being prolonged multiple times since its start in 2020 due to a pandemic, a temporary outdoor dining program in the city ended in March. However, the city is developing a strategy to permit permanent parklets that can eventually accommodate outdoor dining. The Outdoor Dining Task Force for Manhattan Beach convened on May 30 to formulate long-term outdoor dining program suggestions. As a result, customers could eat out without having to worry as much about catching COVID-19 thanks to the earlier temporary scheme, which enabled businesses that applied to set up tables and chairs outdoors in public rights-of-way, such as sidewalks and parking spots. The task force’s first meeting earlier this month introduced the range of the panel’s work and will now serve as its second meeting. In the meantime, the panel will begin delving into what members want to see in the future of outdoor dining in Manhattan Beach at the task force’s forthcoming meeting.

MB Weekly – Manhattan Beach Police Department: Summer Notice

With summer quickly approaching, bicycle thefts are more common! Today an alert citizen saw someone stealing an e-bike at the pier and immediately reported the theft. The quick call allowed officers to locate the suspect as he was riding out of the city in El Porto. The suspect (and his collection of burglary tools) earned a trip to the MBPD jail, and the bicycle was returned to its owner.

Some Tips To Consider:

  • Remember to lock up your bike when it’s unattended.
  • Always use a high quality lock, metal U-locks are more difficult to defeat compared to cable locks.
  • Leave your bicycle in a well-lit and well-traveled area.
  • Take a photo and document your bicycle’s serial number in case it is stolen.

BEWARE/ Indecent exposure: My daughter and I noticed the man “playing with himself” walking on the street. We were parked in front of Health Nut on Manhattan Beach Blvd. We left, turning on Morningside Dr., and saw him again in the back parking of Union Bank. He followed us in a silver BMW to 2nd Street and Meadows without our knowledge. He passed us, stopped his car in front of us, got out, and fully exposed himself this time. Person Hair: Short black hair, Top: White t-shirt (no graphics), Bottom: Light grey athletic shorts, Age: About 27 to 32, Sex: Male, Race: African American, Physical Build: approx 6’ 2” athletic, Vehicle Color: Silver, Make BMW. 210-220 North Morningside Drive, Manhattan Beach.

You may have read some ominous headlines about the unrecognized risks associated with scented candles, such as those asserting that some varieties (namely candles made of paraffin wax) are “toxic” and may leak carcinogenic substances into the air. However, despite the fact that scented candles may emit a variety of vapors and particles that can be hazardous to breathe in at large concentrations, research indicates that with regular use, the dose you receive is significantly lower than what is thought to be damaging to your health. Experts also state that there is no reason to believe that burning candles occasionally will be harmful.

Thank you for this article. Please continue to bring this issue to the forefront of MBCC! We lost four indoor/outdoor cats that were abandoned in Liberty Village last year, and we started feeding them and trying to protect them. We put a hole in our garage for a small cat door and fed them in the garage to try to save them, to no avail. We have over 14 videos of coyotes on Manzanita Lane. We just learned of a horrific event in Manhattan Village with a friend’s cat who was only indoor, who snuck out and, within a short time, was killed on its porch trying to get back in the house; I had an encounter a few weeks ago with a coyote, and it was not afraid of me in the least! They need to go. There is no apex predator for them, and now they are just multiplying, MB Weekly, thank you so much for your attention. They are greatly appreciated before a child or older adult is attacked. They are taking up residency in Polliwog …too close to MBMS!
