MANHATTAN BEACH STRAND ROBBERY – FOUR GUYS SOUGHT:

The Manhattan Beach Police Department is requesting assistance in identifying four guys who robbed a victim of cash on the Strand early Saturday morning, June 22. Manhattan Beach police said Hawthorne police were investigating two similar crimes. In the Manhattan Beach incident, a woman informed officers around 3:45 a.m. that an hour earlier, she and a companion were strolling on 40th Street when a dark-colored Jeep Wrangler came up next to them and tried to gain their attention. The woman and her friend kept walking, but the Jeep followed and four guys got out when the victims stopped in the 3900 block of The Strand. One carried a black handgun and instructed a victim to give them everything they had. MBPD claimed the suspects escaped in the Jeep after the victim gave them an undisclosed cash. The victims were unharmed.

MBPD asks that anyone who has surveillance to please contact them at eyewitness@manhattanbeach.gov

The Bank Of Mom And Dad – 82% Of Parents Financially Support Adult Children, Poll Finds:

A striking 82% of reader’s parents in some way financially support their adult children, according to a recent MB Weekly Reader Poll. This trend highlights young adults’ growing economic pressures, including high living costs and student debt. Parents are covering expenses ranging from rent, health insurance, cell phone, and car expenses. “I thought my kids would be financially independent after college, but the job market is tough,” said Lisa T, a South Bay accountant. “Parents bailing out their adult children financially are hurting them more than helping them,” said Andrew Y. of Manhattan Beach. “They need to grow up!”

MIRA COSTA CLASS OF 2024 – WHAT LIFE ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE GRADUATES?

** Be smart … Have common sense … One stupid mistake and I mean mistake can ruin your career and your life. No better example as the incident in Santa Monica by one punch killing another person and ruining your life. —- David Slay (Award-Winning Chef & Restaurateur in MB) https://www.slay.la

** Dear Graduate, Question authority. Question everything. Social Media is not a valid news source. Always do your own independent research. As Charlton Heston says to the young chimp in the original Planet of the Apes movie: “Never trust anybody over 30.” —- Aaron Ganz (Ganz Media) https://ganzmedia.com

** Never take anyone or anything for granted. No matter what’s offered, you need to put in the work to be successful. —- Marvin Mack (Area Director of Urban Plates) https://urbanplates.com

** Your dreams can come true, if you make them your goals. —- Mark Burton (Former MB Mayor)

** Grads, If you know who Albert Einstein is, you probably know to listen to what he has to say. “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it. He who doesn’t, pays it”. Start saving and investing today. Don’t think you have the money to do that at this time? Create a budget so you know exactly how you are spending money. I’m sure you will find a few things that you really don’t need. Stop buying those things and you will have the money to get started. In 20 or 30 years, you will be glad you started early. The effect of compounding will give you options you would be unlikely to have otherwise. Best of luck, Phil —- Phillip Cook (Prominent Financial Planner) http://cookandassoc.com

by Dave Lane (Manhattan Beach)

I was fishing on the Manhattan Beach Pier around midnight [one] night when a group of people walked behind me; after they got out of my sight, one of the males snuck up behind me, robbed me of my phone and bag, and then ran off to rejoin them. The group of about ten African American teenagers (males and females) ran up to the upper pier parking right outside the Shellback Tavern, where I was able to borrow someone’s phone to call the police; sadly, they sped off before I could connect to the police. I will meet with an MBPD officer … to see if they can open an actual report because there wasn’t enough info [that] night.

Nando Trattoria

I had the pleasure of dining at Nando Trattoria in downtown Manhattan Beach, and it was an extraordinary experience. The charming owner, Dario, ensures every guest feels welcomed and valued. I started with the SPINACI E PERE DEL GIARDINO, a delightful salad featuring organic baby spinach, sweet D’Anjou pears, crunchy roasted pine nuts, and a perfect hint of pecorino sardo, all brought together by a tangy shallot vinaigrette. The main course, BRANZINO AL LIMONE, was simply divine. The pan-seared Mediterranean sea bass was perfectly cooked, complemented by fresh seasonal veggies and tender fingerling potatoes. The lemon caper sauce added a zesty, flavorful kick that elevated the dish. The warm, inviting ambiance and impeccable service made my visit to Nando Trattoria unforgettable. Dario’s passion for authentic Italian cuisine truly shines through every dish. I highly recommend. Memorable.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Randy S. (Manhattan Beach)

On Tuesday, June 18, at 8 p.m. in downtown Manhattan Beach, the scene in front of the Skechers store was chaotic. Over ten minutes, I observed at least six e-bikes riding on the sidewalk, two of which had riders without helmets. The riders, likely teenagers, were laughing, yelling, and oblivious to the pedestrians around them. Their reckless behavior created a tense atmosphere, making it hazardous for anyone walking by. Disturbingly, there was no police presence to manage or deter this activity. This situation felt like a ticking time bomb, with the potential of severe accidents. The lack of enforcement and the blatant disregard for safety rules underscored a growing problem that needs urgent attention before someone gets hurt. Effective measures and increased vigilance are essential to prevent reckless behavior and ensure public safety.

MBPD Arrest Juvenile In Metlox Assault Case:

MBPD detectives and MBPD school resource officers arrested a suspect in an assault and robbery that occurred last month at Metlox Plaza. The juvenile suspect was taken to Juvenile Hall on June 5. On May 4, 10 juveniles accosted three juveniles. The 10 stole an e-bike battery and a necklace and punched one of the victims in the face. MBPD officers also arrested a male adult suspect in the case of an elderly female victim who is believed to have been defrauded of close to $1 million. In May, there were six assaults, five auto thefts, and three business burglaries (each down three from the previous month), four residential burglaries, six vehicle burglaries with four of the vehicles left unlocked, 41 larceny non-vehicle burglaries, and one sexual offense. There were also 3,296 calls for service, and 72 arrests. In the crimes against property category, all larceny led with almost half at 47 of the 96, with fraud a distant second, followed closely by vandalism. With the summer months beginning, the MBPD wants to remind people to “lock it or lose it.” When visiting the beach, take personal belongings from your vehicle and do not leave your keys with your vehicle when heading into the ocean.

MB WEEKLY:
EXCLUSIVE READER QUESTION
TO MB MAYOR JOE FRANKLIN

Dear Mayor: WHAT SPECIFICALLY HAS MANHATTAN BEACH DONE IN THE LAST 30 DAYS TO ADDRESS THIS SIGNIFICANTLY GROWING [EBIKE] PROBLEM?
A: We have held two directed enforcement days in the last month regarding electric bicycles and written over 50 citations on those days alone. We recently made an arrest from a robbery that occurred on May 4 involving persons on electric bikes. We are working in partnership with Hermosa, Redondo, and El Segundo on this issue to ensure we are investigating all available leads with regard to crimes. The City is committed to continuing our enforcement efforts as the summer quickly approaches. I know that you had asked about the last thirty days, but it is important to note that this is an issue that the City has been aware of and working on for quite some time. Our City Council has adopted strict ordinances addressing bicycle safety. At the September 5, 2023, meeting, the City Council adopted an urgency ordinance amending the Manhattan Beach Municipal Code (MBMC) establishing:

  • An ebike speed limit
  • Ebike safety and operational standards
  • Use location restrictions for bicycles, e-bikes, and motorized bicycles
  • The City Council established fines associated with violations of this ordinance that are increased with each subsequent violation within one year. (For example, $250 for the first violation, $750 for the next and $1,000 for the next.)

As you may note, the Hermosa Beach Ordinance recently adopted is very similar to our ordinance. Manhattan Beach’s urgency ordinance became effective on September 6, 2023, and contains safety rules such as:

  • Prohibits riding on City sidewalks, plazas, grass areas, the Strand, parking structures owned or operated by the City, County, or State, and Veterans Parkway.
  • Prohibits riding at speeds over 15 miles per hour on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (i.e. Beach Bike Path), and maintains the current “Walk Only Zone” on both sides of the pier.
  • Requires wearing of properly strapped helmets for all riders under 18 years of age.
  • Requires riders to use bike lanes where possible, and on streets without bike lanes, to ride close to the right curb or edge of roadway.
  • Requires riders to ride in single file and not more than two abreast.
  • Prohibits riding on the back of a bicycle or e-bike without a seat.
  • Prohibits speeding, racing, or stunt activity.
  • Reaffirms requirements to yield to pedestrians at all times.
  • Defines illegal bikes and provides procedures for their impounding if warranted.
  • Violations of this ordinance will result in a misdemeanor and a fine up to $500 for the first violation, $750 for the second violation within one year; and $1,000 for each additional violation within one year of the first violation. If the violation is committed by a minor, the minor’s parents may be cited and fined for violations of the ordinance.

The violation processing procedures for juvenile offenders are very clear. When apprehended, they are brought to the MBPD Police Station. Parents of the juvenile(s) are contacted and instructed to report to the police station. Detailed discussions are conducted and, if warranted, Notices to Appear at Juvenile Court are issued. At Juvenile Court the offender is presented with the option of diversion options including attending counseling combined with community service.

The Manhattan City Council vote was unanimous, 5-0 for the above. Also note that MBPD and the other South Bay agencies work closely to track juvenile behavior and share resources and leads.

(Part Two)

Q: HOW COOPERATIVE HAS THE MANHATTAN BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT BEEN WITH YOUR EFFORTS?
A: Initially there was skepticism that the program would help, but we worked hard to teach good safety habits and respect the expertise of our police personnel. Frankly, it was like “apple pie” once citizens learned that they could be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem. If you are able to hear Chief Johnson, like all of the police chiefs before her, you will hear her advocate citizen involvement in keeping blocks safer by joining Neighborhood Watch. While we no longer provide in-home meetings and learn about crime activity with hints as to how to keep safe from the weekly Crime Updates, I still believe that the best way to keep safe is to know neighbors and look out for one another. Social gatherings can also be safety trainings and be enjoyable too. I like to say, “You can look out for #1 or you can look out for one another.” I think that says it all.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERN ABOUT MANHATTAN BEACH CURRENTLY?
A: Today, with the reclassification of some former felonies to misdemeanors, and the lack of prosecution of the perpetrators of these crimes, we see more cars broken into and stolen and more car parts removed for their value. Parking is an issue, but we can all lock and remove temptations from our vehicles. I do believe that more teeth should be put back into the judicial system to prevent freed perpetrators from coming back to “shop” in our city. But I will add that the diligent work of our police force continues and they arrest those who commit crimes here in Manhattan Beach regardless of the legal outcome.

Q: HAS THE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH BEEN ACTIVE IN THE CITY’S E-BIKE MAYHEM?
A: While I have great concern that one of the E-bike riders may come to harm on our streets, the involvement of Neighborhood Watch has been to detail the efforts of the City Council and our Police Department in educating and policing the students who are using the bikes. If our network can assist further in making the people aware of the situation, we are available to help.

Q: HOW CAN PEOPLE READING THIS GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT GETTING INVOLVED IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH?
A: If you are interested in learning about and participating in or creating Neighborhood Watch on your block, please reach out to Mirna Puma, our NW liaison at the MB Police Department by emailing her at MBNW@manhattanbeach.gov. She will connect you with one of our Area Coordinators to answer your questions and get you into our network. Of course we are always looking for volunteers to be the contact on your block to connect others and serve as the block captain. Additionally, we are again offering Disaster Preparedness meetings to Map Your Neighborhood provided by trained instructors from both the CERT program and Neighborhood Watch. You can sign up to host a meeting on your block through info@mbcerta.info. Details of what is expected of you to hold the training meeting will be provided to you so that you can schedule the meeting to involve a significant number of those living on your block. This is a return of a program that has been shown to assist in the block’s response to a disaster where you will be working together without the support of police and fire for a period of time. I look forward to continuing the collaboration of CERT and MBNW in this effort.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: It is always hard to pick one… But after deciding that it was the romantic Russian tale, “Dr. Zhivago” that I saw with my new husband so many years ago… I also remember how many times I have cried at the end of “Shawshank Redemption.” So these are the two I would pick.

[Neighborhood Watch Liaison Mirna Puma… mbnw@manhattanbeach.gov]

The classic book “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” by William L. Shirer is a masterpiece – a tour de force. I read it decades ago and found it riveting. His use of primary sources of journals, diaries, and the like while living in Germany gives it genuine authenticity. I haven’t heard anyone mention this book in years, but I agree wholeheartedly with the parallels between Goebbels and much of what is happening with today’s media.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia (El Segundo)

A significant factor driving the anti-Israel protests is the far left’s broader ideological stance, which includes its hatred of Western capitalism and its global impacts. This perspective frames Israel as a symbol of Western imperialism and success, drawing ire from those who view this success as built on oppression and inequality. The anti-Israel sentiment is thus entwined with a broader anti-capitalist, anti-Western narrative, where opposition to Israel serves as a proxy for rejecting perceived failures of free enterprise and progress. This ideological stance prioritizes a vision of justice and equality fundamentally at odds with the structures of merit and prosperity that the far left criticizes. Consequently, the protests reflect a more profound ideological commitment rather than a focused concern on Palestinian well-being alone.

There are two things you can always predict with 100 percent certainty if a family, any family, is featured in an advertisement. The first is that the family will be biracial. The second is that the man (especially if he is white) will be portrayed as an incompetent or a loser.

Citywide Mural Project In Manhattan Beach Nearly Complete:

Manhattan Beach is almost finished with its six-year city mural project. In May, Blank Canvas LA muralist Robert Gomez finished his artwork at Manhattan Beach Fire Station No. 1, and artist Pamela Wall Fitch is contributing two, of which, “Elemental Essentials” is a wave-like spiral of colors. Pictured is “What Lifts You,” by Kelsey Montague at Metlox Plaza, on the side of SunLife Organics.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW:
by Darby Winston
Fête Bistro By Slay

I recently had the pleasure of trying the new brunch at Fête Bistro in Manhattan Beach, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. The highlight was the French omelette, filled with French ham, creamy goat cheese, and fresh spinach. Each bite was a delightful combination of flavors, and the accompanying salad was equally impressive – fresh, perfectly dressed, and a great complement to the omelette. The charming general manager, Marilyn, made the experience even more enjoyable with her warm hospitality. Adding to the beautiful ambiance was the live music, which enlivened the spirit of the morning brunch and created a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere. Fete Bistro’s new brunch is a definite winner. It has delicious food, good service, and a vibrant yet cozy atmosphere. I’ll certainly be returning to savor more of their delightful offerings. Highly recommended.

MB – BULLETIN BOARD:

1. ** What is the best time to work out? Anytime you feel works for you. I go to Gold’s Venice 4 days a week. I am there by 5:30 and love the vibe and people who become friends. Good to see Arnold and talk to him once in a while. A lovely person. —- Ed M., Manhattan Beach

2. ** Marilyn, the general manager at Fete restaurant, is terrific. —- Ginger G., Manhattan Beach

3. ** Honest to God, I would give anything to throw a pie in the face of parents who allow their children in restaurants to scream like unruly brats! —- Clark G., Manhattan Beach

4. ** I love Uncle Bill’s Pancake House! —- Jose R., El Segundo

5. ** Dinner at Boa in Manhattan Beach was so loud I couldn’t hear my waitress. It was so dark that I felt like I needed several flashlights. It was so expensive that I thought I needed a second mortgage. —- Gwen L., Manhattan Beach

6. ** Oh, Jesus…here we go. The Census Bureau will soon ask about sexual and gender identity. What if I identify as a kangaroo? —- Lily C., Manhattan Beach

7. ** Family and friends bid farewell to Bill Brand, late Redondo Beach mayor and environmental activist. Brand’s widow, Dierdre Brand, at midday, in the middle of a circle of surfboards, delivered his ashes to the depths of the ocean he loved and fought to protect. —- Editor’s Note

8. ** Public Works received reports of racist graffiti on Peck Avenue over pollywog park. My advice is not to post a photo of this because morons who did it desire this. This vandalism has been reported to Manhattan Beach Public Works, but since it’s on school property, they may be unable to help. —- Liam T., Manhattan Beach

9. ** BeachLife organizers announced they will issue refunds to some ticket holders after high winds caused the cancellation of performances by some top acts on Sunday, May 5, of the three-day music festival in Redondo Beach. Many musical acts performed on Sunday, with Z.Z. Top ending its set a few songs early as winds up to nearly 45 mph sent the performers’ legendary beards sideways. However, Sunday ticket holders missed key scheduled sets after 5 p.m. by Fleet Foxes, Trey Anastasio, Classic Tab, and headliner My Morning Jacket. —- Editor’s Note

10. ** For the comfort of all, please equip your children with headphones while they enjoy screens in the restaurant or salon. We don’t want to hear that noise pollution. Also, good manners wouldn’t hurt. —- Lydia G., Manhattan Beach

11. ** It’s hard to pause in our furiously busy, full-throttle lives. But, alas, sometimes we need to slow down to speed up. —- Jason B., Manhattan Beach

12. ** The state’s budget shortfall is larger than first projected. California faces the consequences of the Golden State exodus. Big surprise? Thanks, Democrats. —- Megan W., Manhattan Beach

13. ** I applied for this position, and I was fortunate enough to be hired! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lTo68HOaaY —- Joyce A., Manhattan Beach

14. ** Shouldn’t hiring be on merit, not a diversity quota. —- Loni P., Manhattan Beach

15. ** At 8:30 am recently on 2nd Street in East Manhattan, I witnessed a body on the ground next to a bike, surrounded by seven police cars and paramedics loading him onto a stretcher. Is he okay? I couldn’t tell if it was a youngster or an older man riding to school, just seeing his legs. Thoughts for his safety, these e-bikes on the street are terrifying. —- Cameron B., Manhattan Beach

16. ** You can’t make this stuff up! Decades ago, BCHD was created to save the South Bay Hospital, but they have not done so. Using our tax money, they morphed into a property management company. Now, they want us to assume $30M bond debt so they can tear down the hospital buildings. UNBELIEVABLE! —- George R., Manhattan Beach

17. ** The purpose of college is to learn about the world, then work, not to blow up the world. —- Don M., Manhattan Beach

18. ** Please watch out for these males who steal cash drawers, cigarettes, and blunt wraps from 7-Elevens. Today at 2:50 AM, they struck my 7-Eleven. The automobiles are a silver Kia Optima with registration plate 8EMF073 and a new black Honda Civic. —- Edgar W., Hermosa Beach

19. ** L.A. sewer bills would increase 22% this year under new proposal. Los Angeles residents and business owners could see their sewer bills more than double over four years if the City Council adopts a series of proposed rate increases. —- Editor’s Note

20. ** A coyote attacked my cat. I can’t find my cat, who seems to have fled. —- Howard S., Manhattan Beach
