GREENBERG CHOSEN FOR MBUSD SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERSHIP:

At a special meeting, Bruce Greenberg was appointed to the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. Jason Boxer’s position will be filled by Greenberg after he resigned in January. The cost of a special election, which the L.A. County Registrar estimated at $879,000, led the board to opt for an appointment procedure.

MB WEEKLY – LENS:

Local residents Heather Kim & Heidi Rayden, along with Kim’s four children, created a “reimagined” blue line flag, presenting it to the Mayor in last week’s city council meeting requesting the city display it in the Police Department lobby windows. “The blue line flag has been unfairly mischaracterized by the media. In an effort to unite our community and show much needed public support for MBPD we reimagined the flag with hearts and an abundance of love & gratitude for our heroic officers who risk their lives to keep us safe. Who couldn’t accept a flag adorned with hearts and made by local kids …?!” said Rayden. (Heather Kim (L) & Heidi Rayden (R))

The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Gerry Morton

CEO of NutriScience Corporation

Q: WHEN DID YOU FIRST ARRIVE IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I was born and raised in Manhattan Beach. I moved away for boarding school when I was 16 (followed by College and 6 years in Silicon Valley) then moved back when I was 27 and have lived here ever since.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU SELECT MANHATTAN BEACH AS YOUR HEADQUARTERS?
A: Is there really anyplace on earth that’s preferable? If there is then I haven’t found it.

Q: HOW DID YOU FORM YOUR ENERGY FIRST COMPANY, AND WHAT IS ITS PRINCIPAL MISSION?
A: After doing the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon (my fourth) in 2001, I got tired of constantly searching for premium, organic nutrition products that had low/no sugar yet were natural/organic. I formed EnergyFirst (www.energyfirst.com) to address that need. Our ProEnergy Protein, Greenergy Superfood, Prefuel Pre-Workout, and Permalean Protein Bars form the foundation of that offering. 888-88-ENERGY.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING YOUR BUSINESS?
A: Staying ahead of the science to ensure we offer the very best quality, all the time. Raw material availability, our market, and the marketing continue to evolve and we work hard to stay at the forefront in each of those areas.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: Casablanca. Hands down.

Q: DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE AS PRESIDENT OF THE MANHATTAN BEACH ROTARY CLUB?
A: I love our Manhattan Beach Rotary Club! Serving as President has given me the opportunity to engage with our members and the community in ways far beyond what I was able to do before. We get 80 of the most engaged, enthusiastic people in Manhattan Beach for breakfast every Monday morning to connect with each other and hear from a consistently great lineup of speakers. Most of us couldn’t think of a better way to start our week.

by City Councilwoman Amy Howorth: We need to feel safe in our community. And one of the things that we always pride ourselves on is ‘no call is too small,’ right? I think what we’re seeing with crime trends, for whatever reasons, is the calls are getting a little bigger. Accordingly, so should our police department.

Expanding Slay’s Restaurant Empire:

Pa-Do was acquired by someone who has made a significant impact on the local dining scene quickly after it closed shortly after the departure of original chef Al Kim. Slay French Bistro is the new moniker, and the menu now includes dishes such as stuffed grape leaves cooked in tomato and lemon sauce, lamb shank with pomegranate molasses, and duck confit with satsumas. David Slay did not specify when the transition will take place.

It is unaffordable to build affordable housing in Manhattan Beach. Why? Because the land value in our City is among the highest in Los Angeles County per square footage, profitability has been nonexistent for developers for decades. The exception to this rule is when a small percentage of units in a development are designated as low-income. That has been the option for any developer since 1979. Only recently has one developer exercised that option in over 40 years. There are very few lots in Manhattan Beach that offer the same variables. The most radical property law (SB9) available for anyone for well over a year allows for multiple homes on existing single-family (R1) lots. If that change had been significant for developers, they would have been gearing strategic plans well before the law was in place. As of this writing, ZERO permits have been pulled at the Manhattan Beach Planning Dept to build multiple units on R1 lots. The two most extreme property markets of rise and decline in less than a year significantly indicate how unremarkable SB9 will affect our town.

Dating in Manhattan Beach?

Buzzwords like “breadcrumbing,” “zombie-ing,” and, of course, “ghosting” are all part of the dating lexicon. However, terminology from psychology like “love bombing,” “gaslighting,” and “trauma bonding” have also crept into everyday language in recent years. Users of the well-known dating service Hinge can still upload selfies while wearing sunglasses and declare their passion for espresso martinis. However, kids may now react to questions like “My therapist would say I___,” “A boundary of mine is___,” and “Therapy just taught me___.”

What I promise this community is this: Like every other council member here, I represent the entire community; whether you voted for me or not, whether I agree with your opinion or not, I care what you have to say, I value your opinion. I want to hear your opinion. While we may not always agree, my first instinct is to see where we can find collaboration. What I would ask in return is that for all of us to be mindful of the divisive times in which we live and to think about how we can help, particularly in our community which has so many gifts. How can we help make this the community that we all want to live in?

Q: HOW DID YOU DISCOVER MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: Uncle Jed. I interviewed Buddy Ebsen about a “Beverly Hillbillies” TV special when I was at USA TODAY and we met in Redondo Beach. I drove here from Culver City down Vista del Mar and fell in love. Three months later we were living here.

Q: FAVORITE MB RESTAURANT?
A: Sweetgreens at Manhattan Village.

Q: BEST PHOTO SPOT?
A: I say every year I’ll never take another picture of the Pier again, but then I break my resolution. I can’t help it. It’s too gorgeous.

Q: THREE HIDDEN PHOTO SPOTS THAT PEOPLE DON’T APPLAUD ENOUGH?
A: The murals outside Baskin-Robbins, El Tarasco on Rosecrans and the sun painting on the Manhattan Avenue garage.

Q: IF YOU COULD LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
A: I wouldn’t leave Manhattan Beach, but if they ran me out of town, I’d pick Carmel by the Sea.

Q: WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLUG PHOTOWALKSTV?
A: Thanks for asking. New episodes of the travel series post every Saturday on YouTube. I’ve brought people on virtual photowalks and shown iPhone camera tricks all over the South Bay, France, New Mexico, Oregon and Spain. We’re going to Japan in March.

By MB Police Chief Rachel Johnson

“… this additional staff would allow us to meet some of our community requests for more engagement. I’d like to see more officers on bicycles. I would like to see more officers on foot … We need additional staffing to arrest career criminals and to conduct surveillance and other means to provide a shorter path from investigation to arrest. We are certainly able to do that now, but this would increase our bandwidth and our capacity to do that more efficiently. … The addition of a full-time bicycle patrol consisting of four officers would allow us to have the consistent, focused engagement of our community,” [MBPD Chief Rachel Johnson] told the Council. “ …This bicycle patrol will provide high visibility in residential and commercial areas while also patrolling areas that are difficult to patrol on vehicles, such as the bike path, high-density traffic locations, and small streets and alleys. They’d have essentially the same function as patrol officers – they’ll just be on bicycles. It allows them to slow down and see more things than you can take in in a car. It allows them to get off their bikes and walk a little bit here and there to see what things are going on in our community. So you will see more people in the field through our bicycle patrol.”

Readers Respond To Dario Vullo:

On Verdict To Close Outdoor Dining In Our City

** I agree completely with Dario. I am in shock that MB would close down outdoor dining. Both myself and my friends still insist that we can only eat at restaurants if we can eat outdoors. I have a risk factor of asthma if I were to get COVID. I have worked very hard meeting with friends and family outdoors as much as possible and I have yet to get COVID because of these precautions. I am a psychologist, and I continue to see my clients frequently getting COVID and some continue to have very severe long-term COVID effects. Many cities I know are making outdoor dining a permanent part of the city, which is how it should be. I will not be going to any indoor dining restaurants in Manhattan Beach in the future. —- Dr. Melissa Robertson

** I am also very disappointed with the decision to stop the outdoor dining. Over the last two years or so, it has delighted me to see all the outdoor seating arrangements. People love sitting outside. It added something to our small town. We had a European vibe. And the major reason is that our local restaurants were able to survive, in some cases just barely. To take that away, we lose some of the charm of downtown Manhattan Beach. —- Dominique “Nikki” Ridley, Manhattan Beach

by Sara Garcia

Truth be told, Manhattan Beach is geographically connected to the once-great city of Los Angeles. Tragically, however, over the past few years, Los Angeles has descended into an atmosphere of violence, chaos, and severe decline. The main reason is that progressives think that influencing law enforcement agendas can and should be done to fulfill social justice concerns. The urge to redress unfavorable outcomes in economics, politics, education, race, sex, and even healthcare drives social justice zealots. However, it is simpler to prevent crime, maintain public order, and defend law-abiding citizens than they realize. They naively fail to appreciate the objective of criminal law – to prevent crime and protect innocent people.

MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

Do Thank-You Notes Still Matter?

** Thank you notes matter more than ever today. In a world that is all about the tap back’ and fast digital dopamine hits, the written word, on an excellent hand-delivered paper stock, means more than ever before. It was expected when it was the only way (only a decade ago) to send a note, but today it’s a true delight when you receive one. These notes convey the emotion and human touch we are missing in 2023. —- Erik Logan Toppenberg, Chief Executive Officer, World Surf League (WSL)

** Thank you notes matter more than ever. AI has taken over our lives so much it’s hard to feel relevant. We have all been trained to be on hold or stand in line to move forward. Did you know that until the 70s, putting someone on hold at all was considered rude behavior? Thank you notes are the only proof someone was really thinking of you. —- Stewart Fournier, realtor

** As a society, we have become lax in our communication skills. It has become easy to hide behind a keyboard and comment on social media, bang out a quick quip of a remark that may sting so that we feel clever. Thank you notes matter. Handwritten notes are best. We as a society have recently been dismayed at the attitudes of people driving selfishly as if STOP signs and speed limits were a suggestion. We are aghast when people stare at their phones rather than chat with table mates at dinner. Thank you notes matter. Handwritten notes are best. I don’t know anyone who has ever been disappointed in the personal connection made by someone jotting down a follow-up note of appreciation acknowledging a person’s time, experience, or advice. Thank you notes allow both the writer and recipient to reflect and appreciate one another. —- Rita Crabtree-Kampe, philanthropist

** Manners have meaning. People feel good when they know what they did was appreciated. Being too busy means you are less likely to have repeat business or be offered more than one kindness. It takes little time or money, so why wouldn’t you say thank you? Did manners suddenly become passe because we’re too busy, too important, or have too much ego? If the world isn’t kind, a thank-you note makes it less so. —- Phil Cook, business owner

** Ads are a complete waste of time. I will pay for the streaming service if it has compelling content. —- Phillip Cook, business owner
