MB Weekly – Reader Poll:
66% Favor A Manhattan Beach DOGE To Find Efficiencies And Cut Government Costs

With an undeniable loud sound, a recent MB Weekly reader poll reveals that 66% of MB Weekly readers support appointing a local DOGE to streamline government spending. The poll over two weeks suggests that locals are eager for unconventional approaches to address escalating public expenses. “Our city salaries and benefits, not to mention the size of our local government, have gotten way too high, and this simply isn’t sustainable,” remarked a long-time Manhattan Beach CPA, voicing widespread concerns over the fiscal matters. Proponents argue that it needs a fresh perspective and creative cost-cutting measures. “Simple look at the salaries and benefits! The City is sure generous in our money,” commented Jenny A., a resident who believes the DOGE proposal could encourage deeper scrutiny of municipal finances. The poll highlights the growing public pressure for fresh solutions that may lead to more efficient use of taxpayer dollars and a leaner government structure.

IN LESS THAN 6 MONTHS SINCE SEPTEMBER 2024, MANHATTAN BEACH HAS SEEN 11 HOME BURGLARIES – EIGHT IN EAST MANHATTAN BEACH:

** With the defeat (thank goodness) of criminal friendly District Attorney George Gascon by Nathan Hochman, I would expect crime to go down. Criminals now know that we have a District Attorney who will prosecute criminals. Our residents, however, have to do their part. Lock your doors, keep your garage door closed, and shut your windows when you are not home. Become involved with our excellent Manhattan Beach Neighborhood Watch and take care of each other. It sounds trite and overused, but if you see something, say something. Our MBPD would rather go on a call and find nothing than be called later after the fact to take a crime report. —- Bob Holmes (Former MB Mayor)

** It’s time to be vigilant, look out for your neighbors, recommit to a neighborhood watch group and before you vote, it might be a good idea to better understand your candidate’s position on crime. Has anyone ever seen the billboard on the 405 South heading to Orange County? It said something like… Coming to Orange County? We prosecute! Today, thieves think it’s legal to steal. It seems change is needed in California. I still feel safer in Manhattan Beach than most parts of L.A., our police force is quick to respond and have a genuine concern for our community. We just seem to have a state that doesn’t know how to handle the bad peeps. It will take all of us to change that. —- Ed Kaminsky (Manhattan Beach Realtor)

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Russ Lesser (Former Mayor)

Last week I had lunch at the Metlox Plaza. I parked in the underground parking lot and took the escalator up. I was the only one using the escalator. I noticed during lunch that in over an hour hardly anyone used the escalators, but they ran constantly as they all do. Last year while visiting Japan we got to the airport and needed to take an escalator up to the higher level. It was stopped but as soon as someone stepped on a sensing plate at the bottom of it it started up. In that country they only use electricity to run them when someone needs one. Wow, what a great idea. In the Metlox plaza there are four escalators constantly running. How much electricity does that use? I am not an expert but it has to be a lot. I called a city councilman to see if our escalators could be upgraded with this feature. He checked with the public works department and was told, “Unfortunately the State of California does not allow this type of feature for escalators.” WHAT? In a state that is so concerned about Climate Change this makes no sense to me.

Watch out for this driver around South Bay Area!! She would honk at us for stopping at stop signs and yielding in pedestrian areas … she sped around us and sped through the stop sign instead of stopping. Just felt a little strange for someone to honk at someone multiple times for following the law while driving. We get it. Californians like to do the California stop, but most of the time she was honking there was another car turning in front of us or pedestrians waiting to cross.

Former Manhattan Beach Mayor Mark Burton Signs Off With a Warning: “The Real Problems Begin and End in Sacramento”

After years of dedicated public service, former Manhattan Beach Mayor Mark Burton officially signs off, leaving a stark warning about the city’s future. “I have given everything and then some to the city I love,” Burton said. “It is now time for me to step aside and allow others to shape the future of Manhattan Beach. I strongly believe the real problems begin and end in Sacramento.” Burton’s departure comes as state-mandated housing policies threaten to reshape Manhattan Beach, replacing its single-family residential charm with high-rise developments. He points to the anticipated approval of a seven-story apartment building at 2301 Sepulveda Boulevard as the first of many that could forever alter the city’s low-profile character. “For several years now, single-party Sacramento has had communities like ours in their crosshairs,” Burton stated. “These politicians are committed to changing our community into one with towering apartment buildings – plenty of them.” His message is clear: change in Sacramento is the only solution. With the 2026 election looming, Burton urges residents to vote for new leadership to preserve the community’s identity. With that, Burton shifts his focus to family. “Now, it’s time for me to devote all my time to my grandkids,” he said.

“As I sign off, I am deeply concerned with an apparent ‘cancer of complacency’ on our City Councils. Just going along, to get along and clinging to the status quo is the best way for our City to be left behind, to let change happen that erodes the character of our community. Our Council and future Councils need to manage changes to preserve and protect the character of our community. Please don’t let the ‘cancer of complacency’ infect our City Council. Vote for ‘proactive’ candidates that have the skills and courage to manage changes.” Signing off.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by E.W. (Manhattan Beach)

I am at my wit’s end. I love my older son dearly, but his refusal to take responsibility for his life is exhausting. I’ve supported, encouraged, and even given him ultimatums – yet nothing seems to change. He drifts from job to job, always blaming others for his failures, while I watch in frustration, knowing he is capable of more. Meanwhile, his younger brother thrives – balancing school, work, and personal passions. It’s not about comparison but about accountability. I want my older son to see that his struggles aren’t bad luck or unfair treatment; they are the result of his unwillingness to grow. I don’t want to push him away, but I cannot keep carrying him. I need advice – how do I help him without enabling him? How do I love him without losing myself? No matter what I do, I feel like the villain. Neighbors, I need some advice.

MBUSD ROLLS OUT ETHNIC STUDIES PILOT AT MIRA COSTA AHEAD OF STATEWIDE MANDATE:

State Assembly Bill 101 of the Education Code mandates that all high schools offer at least one semester of Ethnic Studies starting in the 2025-26 school year. At its February 5 meeting, MBUSD Board members approved two course proposals for the 2025-26 school year: Visual Arts: Diversity and Cultural Studies – one semester; U.S. History: Diversity and Cultural Studies – one year. Last March, the Board of Trustees approved the Diversity and Cultural Studies yearlong and semester courses. “In response to feedback from the Board, staff committed to developing at least one integrated course for the 2025-26 school year,” according to board meeting documents. “An integrated course is an existing course that focuses on the objectives of the Diversity and Cultural Studies curriculum. The addition of two integrated courses will provide students with options to fulfill the California Ethnic Studies Graduation Requirement. Proposition 28: Arts and Music in Schools funding, can be used to offer the Visual Arts: Diversity and Cultural Studies course, and because US History remains a graduation requirement, offering this course will not require additional funds.”

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Name Withheld by Request (Manhattan Beach)

Manhattan Beach residents must recognize that good intentions can sometimes have unintended consequences. While offering food or money to homeless individuals may seem compassionate, it often prolongs their time on the streets rather than guiding them toward real solutions. The City and MBSAFE work tirelessly to connect these individuals with services, housing, and support systems that foster self-sufficiency. However, when basic needs are consistently met through well-meaning handouts, some choose to stay rather than seek sustainable change. The rise in encampments around our public spaces – parks, Metlox Plaza, bus stops – proves that generosity without structure can backfire. We must focus on solutions that address the root of homelessness, not just its symptoms. The best way to help is to direct those in need to professional services. If we genuinely care, we must stop enabling life on the streets and start supporting pathways to a stable, dignified future.

Falling Cargo, Fatal Consequence: Compton Man Pleads Not Guilty In Officer’s Death

A man pleaded not guilty in connection with a multi-vehicle collision that fatally injured a Manhattan Beach Police Department motorcycle officer in October 2023. In October 2024, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced Raymond Eugene Sanders of Compton had been charged in the Oct. 4 crash that killed 35-year-old Manhattan Beach Police Officer Chad Swanson, who was riding his department motorcycle to work. Sanders was charged with one count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, a misdemeanor, in case 24CMCM01571. Sanders is accused of improperly securing boxes of lighting fixtures to his truck, causing several to fall onto the roadway. Investigators determined improper securement as a key factor in the crash. “The life of Officer Swanson, a husband and father of three young children, was tragically cut short. He had honorably served the Manhattan Beach community for 13 years, and his loss is a profound one felt by his family, colleagues, and all who knew him,” District Attorney Gascón said in October. “This case is a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of negligence on our roads. Drivers must always remain vigilant and cautious – failure to do so can cost lives. Those who act recklessly and put others in danger will be held accountable.”

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Steven Blum

If anyone witnessed or knows who the person was who kicked my Chihuahua while my daughter walked him today by the tennis courts at Live Oak Park. This happened at 12:24. Several people walked by and did nothing to protect my daughter, but this person lost his mind on her. He was a late 50s white male and spoke terribly to her. It’s sad how people are behaving these days.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by R.W. (Manhattan Beach)

As a lifelong successful business owner and Manhattan Beach resident, I am genuinely perplexed by any opposition to forming a DOGE-like committee of former Manhattan Beach mayors to oversee city matters. Given the ongoing concerns about excessive government spending – well documented by Paul Wafer in numerous articles and completely unrefuted – why wouldn’t independent oversight and fresh perspectives be a good idea? It seems counterintuitive to ask the same individuals who contributed to the problem of bloated salaries and expenditures to suddenly become the solution. This is akin to asking an alcoholic to stop drinking without any external intervention or accountability. True reform requires independent, critical thinkers – not those entrenched in the same system they once managed. Manhattan Beach deserves innovative, unbiased leadership, not a self-regulating committee of past decision-makers. If the goal is real progress, shouldn’t we prioritize transparency and fresh ideas rather than recycling the past?

MB WEEKLY – LENS:

On 2/11/2025 at approximately 2:59 p.m., officers received a call for service at 1800 Rosecrans (Trader Joe’s) regarding a stolen wallet from a victim’s purse. Officers learned that credit cards stolen from the victim were soon declined when fraudulently used at the Apple Store inside the Village Mall. In an excellent display of efficient communication and cooperation, officers responded to the area of the mall in coordination with Mall Security personnel and arrested two female suspects.

MB WEEKLY – R.I.P.:
David Stanley Barks (1938-2025)

Longtime aerospace manager David Stanley Barks died peacefully after a short illness on January 29. He was 86. “A lifelong lover of the ocean, David spent his entire life after age 5 with the Pacific in his backyard. He moved from Santa Monica to Manhattan Beach in the 1970s and was still swimming in the sea from spring through fall until just a few years ago. He also participated in the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair 10K for many years and biked to the gym and appointments into his 70s. In 2001, he became a peer counselor with Beach City Health District, deeply enjoying his work visiting homebound older adults,” according to neptunesociety.com.

1. ** Yeah for Elon! Finally, someone with guts exposes the OUTRAGEOUS waste of our so-called enlightened elites. Why is USAID funding ideological pet projects instead of real global needs? Millions wasted on critical gender theory in the Balkans, diversity training for the BBC, and gender-neutral language in Sri Lanka? Enough! Expose it – reform it. —- Dr. O.M. (Redondo Beach)

2. ** Honest to God, it’s disgusting! At least 25% of all items at CVS in Manhattan Beach are locked up like crown jewels. Deodorant? Under lock and key. Razor blades? Forget it. Need an employee to buy toothpaste! What the hell happened? —- Dennis G.

3. ** LAFD is underfunded. It’s sad that firefighters were kept from the front lines due to un-serviced fire engines. https://youtu.be/MNpL0NsvxxQ?si=H3T7yWLfm2HFanyJ —- Glenn S.

4. ** Lip balm is so expensive! —- Carla A.

5. ** The liberal left magnifies America’s failures, particularly slavery and segregation, not the magnitude of our success in virtue. They have a proctologist’s view of this nation. —- Todd B.

6. ** I wanted to share a South Bay best-kept secret: Sunday brunch at Pacific Standard Prime (located at 1819 South PCH, Redondo Beach, between the Pancake House and Best Western, on the same side of the street). Great food (especially their Australian Wagyu beef), great drinks, great service … a truly fine restaurant! —- Paul B.

7. ** That was the worst Super Bowl halftime show I’ve ever seen. It sounded like music to slaughter cattle by – repulsive. If this is what passes for music today, no wonder we’re in cultural decline. Compton’s Kendrick Lamar brought Not Like Us to the stage – not like music, either. —- Larry A.

8. ** I once heard a simple yet powerful formula for success: “Be where you’re supposed to be. Do what you’re supposed to do. And don’t lie.” It stuck with me for 30 years, and it still holds. Sometimes, the best wisdom is the simplest. —- Chris K.

9. ** Musk says FEMA spent $60M housing illegal immigrants in ‘Luxury Hotels’ last week. Charming. —- Oliver B.

10. ** There is nothing emasculating about being deliberate with your appearance. To do otherwise is unmasculine and childish. —- Tiffany C.

11. ** I love El Porto! —- Grace T.

12. ** This is the same crap we heard trump (small “t” is intentional) utter in his role as “consoler-in-chief” after that terrible airplane/helicopter crash in D.C. This was despite providing NO PROOF, NO SPECIFIC (relevant) EXAMPLES and also despite FAA people who know what they’re talking about telling all “who will listen” that air traffic controllers go through lengthy, rigorous training to ensure they only put the best of the best in air traffic control towers. The only criticism worthy of discussion is that they are understaffed and have outdated computer systems … and this is the fault of congress (small “c” is intentional). —- Paul B.

13. ** Has anyone else gotten those scammy “Pay your Fast Track tolls or lose your license!” texts? Total B.S. These fraudsters are getting bold – threatening licenses now? Don’t click! Check your actual account. Scammers are everywhere, and California’s toll system is already a mess without fake threats, making it worse. —- Gabriel N.

14. ** Based on standard inflationary rates, if rapper 50 Cent began his career today, his name would be Dollar-O-One. —- Gwendolyn P.

15. ** That was some serious rumbling at Chevron! Yikes! Anyone else feel that? —- Omar J.

16. ** According to city statistics, fewer than 40% of the 465 Malibu homes destroyed in the Woolsey fire have been reconstructed. For many homeowners, the problem has been navigating the web of regulations controlling what can get built along California’s coastline. —- Terri A.

17. ** DOGE finds that the Social Security Administration is sending checks to people 150 years old. The question is, why does Cher even need that money? —- Howie D.

18. ** If cats could play air hockey, they would be unbeatable. —- Daisy L.

19. ** My favorite book of all time – “I Robot” by Issac Asimov. —- Aaron G.

20. ** Driving down Culver Blvd in Playa del Rey, heading back to Manhattan Beach, we spotted a mysterious blue light in the sky stretching toward the ocean. It was bright, fast, and almost surreal – did anyone else see it? What could it have been? A meteor? Something else? —- Cody D.

“WE ALL WALK IN DIFFERENT SHOES” – URBAN PLATES MANHATTAN BEACH AND MB WEEKLY COLLECT OVER 150 PAIRS OF SHOES FOR L.A. MISSION HOMELESS PROGRAM:

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and generosity, Urban Plates Manhattan Beach and MB Weekly (www.MBWeekly.net) successfully collected over 150 pairs of shoes for the L.A. Mission Homeless Program as part of their annual charity initiative, “We All Walk in Different Shoes.”

Recognizing that something as simple as a pair of shoes can make a profound difference in the lives of those in need, this initiative has grown into a beloved tradition, inspiring Manhattan Beach residents to come together and give back.

“We’re deeply moved by the outpouring of support from our community,” said Marvin Mack, Regional Manager of Urban Plates Manhattan Beach. “A good pair of shoes represents comfort, dignity, and a step toward a better future. We are honored to support the L.A. Mission’s vital work.” Urban Plates generously gave a $5.00 gift card to each person who brought in a pair of used shoes.

MB Weekly, the leading local news source, played a key role in mobilizing awareness and engagement for the campaign. “This effort isn’t just about shoes – it’s about compassion, dignity, and unity,” said Darby Winston, co-editor of MB Weekly. “Our readers and the incredible patrons of Urban Plates made this possible, proving once again that Manhattan Beach is a community that cares.” The donated shoes will be distributed to individuals experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, helping them navigate their daily challenges with greater comfort and confidence. For more information or to get involved in future initiatives, visit www.MBWeekly.net or stop by Urban Plates Manhattan Beach.

1. ** I am sorry to say, but my Mother is a drunken bitch! —- Emily H.

2. ** Kudos to Lee Phillips for her thoughtful comments supporting Prop 36. Prop 47 had been a disaster in our state. By not holding criminals under 47 accountable, we have deprived many first-time offenders of key services to help them turn their lives around. Prop 36 helps bring sanity back to CA law enforcement. —- Fred T.

3. ** Another one bites the dust! The former Pitfire Artisan Pizza on Manhattan Beach Blvd & Morningside Dr. is being gutted after closing recently. What’s driving the decline with restaurants vanishing weekly in downtown Manhattan Beach? High rents? Changing tastes? The trend is undeniable. What’s next for the space? —- Clarence C.

4. ** Science Journal profiled the groundbreaking Chinese Nobel Prize-winning scientist Tu Youyou. It must be a nightmare to sing Happy Birthday to her. —- Atlas J.

5. ** You stop getting money in birthday cards right around the age you need extra cash the most. —- Darin H.

6. ** Do you know the crazy lib “Bishop” who slammed President Trump the day after he was inaugurated? It’s been exposed that Mariann Budde’s Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM) collected $53 million from Govt programs in 2023 for “Immigrant Resettlement.” So President Trump is bringing her multi-million dollar payday to an end! No wonder she’s as mad as a hornet. —- Kaye M.

7. ** Why do all the young people working in restaurants look constipated? —- Roger F.

8. ** Facebook was launched 21 years ago today. Over the years, the site has reunited families, sparked romances, and taken the legwork out of stalking. —- Roman V.

9. ** It didn’t take long: State Farm is scrambling for a 22% emergency rate hike after 8,700 wildfire claims. Maybe I should send Mayor Bass a heartfelt thank you note for her stellar fire preparedness. Oh wait – there wasn’t any. Just more chaos, empty promises, and skyrocketing costs for Californians. —- Linda T.

10. ** Does anyone else wonder what a DOGE-like process would reveal for the California State budget? Would L.A. County be worse? —- Adam G.

11. ** Japonica in El Segundo is a modern-day South Bay restaurant with an inviting atmosphere and nostalgic charm. It captures the essence of a bygone era while serving up contemporary delights. A perfect blend of retro vibes and fresh flavors makes it a local favorite. —- Nancy B.

Lower-level staff are commonly aware of problems that management is far removed from, disagrees with, ignores, or is inept at decision-making. —- Gaye S.

13. ** Have you seen how long it takes to install a city directory? I have watched this project in front of Slay Italian Kitchen. I am amazed and so impressed that inefficient management is happening in front of our eyes, and our tax dollars are wasted. —- David S.

15. ** The Point is in El Segundo, not Manhattan Beach. —- Steve N.

19. ** America with record illiteracy worried what will happen if education system is reformed. —- Layla K.

20. ** Sophisticated burglars use drones to case neighborhoods for valuables – e-bikes, catalytic converters, expensive tools – you name it. Worse, drones are the new “peeping Tom” tools. Think your open curtains are safe? Think again. Silent drones with telephoto lenses see everything. Welcome to a new era of high-tech invasion. Stay vigilant. —- Sissy B.
