MANHATTAN BEACH SUPERINTENDENT “SADDENED” BY RECENT ANTI-SEMITIC VERBAL ASSAULT:

MBUSD and Anti-Semitic Verbal Assault

After learning that Jewish students at Manhattan Beach Middle School were subjected to an anti-semitic verbal assault by another student in the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, MB Weekly reached out to MBUSD Superintendent John Bowes, Ed.D. The superintendent sent a letter in an October 24 email that had been sent out to families and staff, that reads in part: “Like you, I am deeply disturbed by the recent events in the Middle East and am even more saddened that these events have led to troubling interactions between some of our middle school students. My heart aches thinking of the students, as well as their families, who are already suffering from the events in the Middle East, who now may feel unsafe and unwelcome in our community. While there are inaccuracies in the information circulating, it is clear that there is still work to be done on our campuses to effectively eliminate anti-Semitism. … I have reached out to our partners at the Anti-Defamation League, Rabbi Kalev, Rabbi Yossi, and other local leaders, as well as other resources in our community, for input and assistance to address these difficult issues. I am deeply grateful for their support, and I know their insights and sensitivity will help guide our work moving forward. It is important to remember that if you see something, say something. This applies to anti-Semitic acts and statements, and it is important that students report incidents of anti-Semitism as soon as possible to school administrators.”

Change.org Petition

A petition started October 23 on change.org titled “Antisemitic Activity at MBMS and Damaging Response by School/Principal” gained more than a thousand supporters. A posting by an Ellen Lubman stated in part: “As deeply concerned parents and community members, we are raising this issue due to the alarming incidents of antisemitism in our local schools. … The school’s motto ‘No Place for Hate’ must be upheld in its entirety. This situation calls for a compassionate approach that prioritizes education. It is not compassionate to allow an 11 or 12-year-old to continue attending school ‘as usual’ after engaging in hate speech and without any penalty. This would only propagate the behavior. …”

City Council

Last year, Manhattan Beach City Council joined government agencies in adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. “I’m disheartened and frankly disgusted that acts of hate and antisemitic incidents continue in Manhattan Beach,” stated Mayor Steve Napolitano during an October 6, 2022, meeting. The approved resolution “acknowledges the working definition of antisemitism as defined by the IHRA: ‘Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.’ This definition empowers the community to identify, address, and counter antisemitism. The Council’s action reaffirms the City’s commitment to counter antisemitism, discrimination, and hate. As such, the City is working with leaders from local faith based organizations, L.A. County representatives, the business community, and Manhattan Beach Unified School District to support the City’s goals to end hate within the community.”

Manhattan Beach Joins L.A. County Zero-Bail Lawsuit:

Manhattan Beach is now among more than two dozen cities to challenge Los Angeles County’s zero-bail policy. On Oct. 1, the L.A. County Superior Court issued the Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols. Late last month, a dozen cities, led by Whittier, began a campaign to oppose the new bail schedule, which local officials say will increase crime. At the Oct. 17 council meeting, George Gabriel, assistant to the city manager, said Manhattan Beach may pay $10,000 to join, but it may be less depending on how many other cities enter. People can be cited and released without bond for retail theft, car burglaries, and narcotics sales.

Owner Of Manhattan Beach Brewco Claims It Will Stay Open:

Brewco’s owners announced its closure a month ago after 30 years in Manhattan Beach, but Brewco will remain open after owners scrapped plans to turn it into an “elevated tavern.” The informal gastropub was scheduled to close for significant renovations. According to owner Michael Zislis, customers saved it: “I got a lot of pushback from the community. … Our kids have no cheap places to eat anymore. We can’t go out with family anymore. Lots of resistance.”

An Old Fogie Remembers Manhattan Beach

My first brush with Manhattan Beach was in grad school. I lived three houses from the Strand on 18th Street, because in those days (1970’s) you could. I would come home Friday nights, pour a glass of wine, sit on the bench on the Strand and stare out to the ocean. Peaceful, uncrowded, refreshing. In the 1980’s, my husband and I bought our house in the Tree Section. We had moved from LA and the culture shock was palpable. In stores, if you were writing a check (remember those?) and your address was Manhattan Beach, you didn’t need to show ID. There were no bagel stores and only one very little book store. Mira Costa was known for emptying out if the surf was up. Our future children would go to Grandview, which very much resembled our elementary schools in the San Fernando Valley. My husband resumed surfing and we settled in for the next 30 years of what we hoped was peace and safety. Things have changed.

Manhattan Beach Unified May Ask Voters To Renew Public School Parcel Tax:

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District may ask voters to renew a parcel tax benefiting the city’s public schools next summer. “To supplement inadequate State funding, in 2018 local voters approved Measure MB, a school parcel tax measure that provides approximately $2.5 million in locally controlled funding each year that cannot be taken by the State,” according to mbusd.org Parcel Tax Information. “Unless renewed by voters, funding from Measure MB will expire in June 2024 and MBUSD would have to cut approximately $2.5 million from its annual budget. This revenue currently funds over 20 MBUSD teachers, keeping class sizes small and supporting academic programs. Parcel tax revenue and fundraising provide stable local funding that Manhattan Beach schools rely upon. … To maintain local funding and prevent cuts to teachers and classroom instruction, the MBUSD Board of Trustees is considering placing a measure on the March 5, 2024, ballot to renew the current $225 school parcel tax for six years without increasing the current tax rate.”

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Berit Johnston (Manhattan Beach)

Vandalism and theft at Grandview Elementary School. Was your child a part of it? Please return our helmet. My daughter’s bike was destroyed, and her helmet was stolen over the weekend from the Grandview gated bike rack by what is assumed to be older kids known to break into the school by hopping fences to open gates. The front office staff has been dealing with teenagers breaking in, and this time, they destroyed and stole our property. Granted, my daughter forgot that she rode her bike when her grandparents picked her up, so the bike got locked in the school gates for the weekend. I NEVER dreamed someone would break in and destroy it. I am posting a photo of her helmet so that some parent whose child magically appeared with this brand new, fancy helmet that “their friend gave them” or they “found” somewhere can return it to us. Her name and phone number have probably been ripped out, but I hope that if someone’s kid brought home this stolen piece of property, they would do the right thing, return it, and bring consequences for the responsible kids. I would certainly want to know if my kid was involved in something like this. I also raise this point for any other Grandview parents to bring up the fact that there are no security cameras, and that unauthorized persons are able to sneak onto campus off hours and the multitude of possible safety issues this could cause. If you have any information, please share. It’s such a terrible feeling to have something special to your first grader (and her main mode of transportation to school) be violated.

Man Suspected Of Shooting Girlfriend In Manhattan Beach Parking Lot:

Authorities said Manhattan Beach cops detained a man for shooting his spouse in a parked car during an argument. At 1:17 a.m. on October 14, Manhattan Beach Police got a complaint of a shooting in the Vons Market parking lot. A couple was parked by the store, according to preliminary investigation. “An argument escalated at which time the male subject produced a handgun and shot the female in the lower abdomen,” the MBPD stated. Police said the woman had surgery at Harbor General Hospital and is stable. Ahmayae Uriah Barner, 21, of Long Beach was arrested for attempted murder, according to MBPD.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW:
by Darby Winston
Northern Café, El Segundo

Recently, under new management, Northern Cafe in El Segundo has undergone a slight transformation. While subtly different, the revamped menu retains the soul-warming essence of Northern Chinese cuisine. The warm ambiance and fairly gracious staff (with, as usual, not enough staff) make you feel generally welcome. The culinary experience here is enjoyable. Each dish showcases the chef’s dedication to quality ingredients. The service is modestly good, given the non-existent service of most moderately priced restaurants. With its new management and slightly new menu, Northern Cafe in El Segundo has truly elevated itself to be a worthy destination. It’s a culinary journey leaving you with a taste of Northern China that lingers long after your visit.

East MB Home Burglary … a home in East MB was broken into by three burglars at 7:30 p.m. They entered the house by stacking outdoor furniture as a ladder to the rear deck, then broke a glass door panel with a brick to gain entrance. A housekeeper at the house heard a noise upstairs and ran out of the house to find help from neighbors. It is unclear what was taken from the ransacked main bedroom. A police report was taken, but this is just another crime for the community police report that will go unsolved. Thankfully, although the housekeeper was extremely shaken, she was unhurt. Be vigilant during these lawless times.

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
86% DRESS DOWN SINCE PANDEMIC

In the latest MB Weekly Reader Poll, 86% of respondents revealed a significant shift in their work attire since the onset of the pandemic. The nationwide poll sheds light on the changing dynamics of workplaces in the wake of remote work and flexible schedules. With the traditional boundaries of workspaces blurring, most professionals have embraced a more relaxed approach to their attire. Suits and formal dresses have taken a back seat, making way for comfortable casual wear. This shift mirrors the evolving corporate culture and reflects the workforce’s adaptability during these challenging times. The findings underline a broader trend, indicating that the pandemic has reshaped our work environments and redefined our understanding of professionalism. As remote work becomes the norm rather than the exception, the focus seems to have shifted from formal appearances to productivity and efficiency.

Manhattan Beach Pier Glows Blue & White For Israel:

Wednesday, Oct. 11, blue and white lights commemorated an incomprehensible catastrophe. A few days prior, Hamas had invaded Israel. That day marked the end of Sukkot, remembering the 40 years the Jews spent in the desert after escaping Egypt. The blue and white pier lights Wednesday evening were planned by local Jewish and Christian leaders and attended by about 500 individuals to show support for Israel. Chabad of the Beach Cities Rabbi Yossi Mintz told the pier crowd his response to being asked if he has brothers or sisters in Israel. Yes, I tell them. 7 million. Also speaking was City Councilwoman Amy Howorth.

Hometown Fair Celebrates 51 Years In Manhattan Beach:

Manhattan Beach conducted its 51st annual favorite community tradition. Locals and visitors celebrated the annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair throughout six blocks of Valley Drive and other local landmarks. Visitors enjoyed beer and wine gardens, arts and crafts, food, game booths, and live entertainment, including a battle of the bands. Kids Country allowed kids to bounce in bouncy houses, pet animals, ride horses, and see magic and wild animal exhibitions. The popular local band Dietz Brothers paid tribute to their late member Pat Dietz, who died in a vehicle crash in June, on the newly named Dietz stage. For 40 years, Pat Dietz performed at the fair. A 50th-anniversary celebration last year emphasized the city and fair’s heritage. Silent auction winners received L.A. Kings and Galaxy tickets, Manhattan Beach Holiday Fireworks seats, and an American Girl doll experience. Civic participation, event implementation, and scholarships and grants to nonprofits, boosters, and local students are funded by auction proceeds.

Manager At BOA Steak

Q: WHEN DID YOU FIRST START WORKING WITH BOA STEAKHOUSE?
A: I started with BOA Steakhouse in September of 2022.

Q: IS THE BOA STEAKHOUSE IN MANHATTAN BEACH THE FIRST ONE OF YOUR RESTAURANTS TO OPEN FOR LUNCH?
A: BOA Steakhouse was open for lunch at our other locations before COVID hit Los Angeles. The BOA at Manhattan Beach is currently our only location open for lunch 11:30am-3:00pm/7 days a week.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING ABOUT RUNNING A RESTAURANT IN THE POST-COVID WORLD?
A: So much has changed in the restaurant business over the past few years in this post-COVID world! One of the most challenging things would be ensuring that all guests are comfortable in all of our locations. The great perk about our Manhattan Beach location is that half our steakhouse is an open-air patio with large sliding windows and shades along with private booths to make sure our guests have the privacy they desire.

Q: WHY DID BOA DECIDE TO OPEN A RESTAURANT IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: Our owners wanted to share our passion for food, beverage and hospitality in a part of Los Angeles that we believe both demanded and needed a uniquely elevated dining experience. We believe that Manhattan Beach was the place to do just that.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: Shawshank Redemption, the script, acting and music are a perfect blend that is rarely unmatched in the history of film.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OTHER RESTAURANTS IN THE AREA THAT YOU ENJOY?
A: Tin Roof Bistro, the Strand House, Cafe Wild and American Junkie are some of my favorites. Although they are all very different concepts, these are some of the most loved and deep-rooted restaurants in the Beach Cities that have great local support from their communities. Their food and beverage are pretty top-notch as well.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?

Manhattan Beach Begins Citywide Security Camera System – Will Increase Safety Surveillance:

The City Council approved the installation of security cameras at many government institutions this week, laying the groundwork for a beach town monitoring network. Staff began contemplating the project in 2020 in response to disturbances at City Hall and other government facilities. Seven companies bid on the project, and BlueViolet Networks was chosen to finish the first two of three project phases. The first two phases will cost $523,820. Phase 1 at the public works yard will include the installation of 17 cameras, 28 at City Hall, and Phase 2 includes the police/fire facility. All sites will get a network video recorder with transfer capabilities to save the data in the system, and will include capacity for 366 days of storage. Construction on both phases begins in November and should end in June.

Realtor

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE REAL ESTATE GAME IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: Since the Earth was cooling and God was a baby, HAHA! I grew up in the tree section, raised my family here, and grew up in a real estate household. But with all my time in this business, my passion for serving others has not aged a bit.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BEING A REALTOR IN THE SOUTH BAY?
A: Well, I love a challenge, but I would say one of the most challenging parts is staying ahead of all the constantly changing legislation regarding property sales, legal forms, taxes, rental properties, etc., and how these things affect my clients’ overall wealth building strategies. Having professionals in those industries that I can tap into is tremendously important.

Q: AS A PASSIONATE BIKER, WHAT’S THE LONGEST DISTANCE YOU’VE EVER RIDDEN?
A: Hmm, on an “analog” bike (pedal power only), maybe 50 miles (TJ-Ensenada ride in another life) – except I just recently got back from a trip in Europe where we rode 15-20 miles through wineries (uphill both ways…kidding) and that was a real win. My husband and I have been avid E-bikers since they first came out and we ride a LOT (and very safely btw…)

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: I’m the best sign out there – VIRGO. We are loving, organized, good cooks, and care for Mother Earth!

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN THE MANHATTAN BEACH AREA?
A: One of my go to’s is Sweet Greens as I love a good healthy salad. And my hubby and I ride bikes to Redondo and frequent Yellow Vase in the Riviera for breakfast (love their salmon crepe) – makes us feel like we are in Europe.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: I have watched It’s A Wonderful Life on every Christmas Eve since my children were born…but The Family Stone is right up there as well. Any movie with good values and good humor about the human condition gets me every time!

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Alice W. (Manhattan Beach)

I must confess that I am not even slightly surprised that the Corner Bakery in Manhattan Village went out of business recently. On my few visits, it might have been one of the most poorly run restaurants I’ve ever had the misfortune of eating at. The staff seemed miserably unhappy, and the food quality was well below Denny’s. I do hope another restaurant will reappear in its location, but one that is not nearly as run down.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Mark Burton

Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

Here are two thoughts regarding public safety/security priorities:

  1. Regarding public safety, a high-performing Council should always put the needs of the residents and business community first and the staff’s needs second. That’s not what happened when the Council recently approved hundreds of thousands of dollars for security cameras at city facilities like the public works yard, City Hall, etc. I don’t recall smash and grabs occurring at city facilities. The Council deferred the installation of security cameras in Downtown MB and the Mall for several years. They got it backward. The priority should have been installing security cameras in Downtown MB and the Mall FIRST, then city facilities much later.
  2. As we know, the presence of a police officer is the most effective deterrent and crime prevention tool. Yet, we still don’t have a regular footbeat or patrol officer in Downtown MB or the Mall. I’m reasonably sure the Downtown BID and the Mall would help pay for such a dedicated footbeat or patrol officer. That’s how L.A. turned around Hollywood Blvd…the Hollywood BID stepped in to help with the cost.

Lesser has many achievements he can cite from his career serving the public, but there is one easily missed aspect. He was a member of several legislative bodies, and he never missed a single one. Lesser never gave up. He always came up, and he was entirely focused. After that, he tended to give his colleagues the praise.

** Federal prosecutors unsealed a grand jury indictment that accuses a Torrance man who was a candidate for a Los Angeles County congressional seat in four federal elections with misusing campaign funds, including funneling tens of thousands of dollars in campaign donations back to himself through his friends and family. Omar Navarro, 34, is charged in a 43-count grand jury indictment. Navarro also allegedly used campaign funds to pay for personal expenses, including trips to Las Vegas and wine country, as well as two criminal defense attorneys. According to the indictment, Navarro later falsely reported these expenditures as campaign expenses to the Federal Election Commission.

** Hermosa Beach City Council members decried racist and antisemitic comments made during the public comments segment of a recent meeting. Staffers say the city would investigate ways to limit hate speech at public meetings.

** At a special Hermosa Beach City Council meeting, fellow Councilmembers elected Justin Massey and Dean Francois as mayor and mayor pro tem, respectively. During the special session, Councilmembers and community members alike also praised outgoing Mayor Raymond Jackson for his community engagement and leadership.

4. ** The Liberal elite are a funny bunch. When a bunch of peasants are killed, the luxury belief class shrugs. But when the nobility and petty nobility are targeted, the narrative shifts. It’s only when those in positions of influence and privilege feel the consequences of their beliefs and policies that real change is seriously considered. —- David S., Manhattan Beach

5. ** The Manhattan Beach Police Officers’ Association (MBPOA) has created a donation fund for the Swanson family via the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) Fund a Hero Program. It’s good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it’s good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure that you haven’t lost the things that money can’t buy. —- Clarence C., Manhattan Beach

8. ** If you believe in free speech, in the right to tell jokes about AOC’s level of intelligence without repercussions, and in ensuring this freedom endures for the next generation of Americans, the time to stand up is NOW. —- Dennis P., Manhattan Beach

9. ** Three years into his office, President Biden has failed to address illegal immigration and border security. Migration across the U.S.-Mexico border is at an all-time high. Before the 2024 election, the president will face public perceptions of a chaotic border. Democratic policy on the problem is disgraceful lacking. —- Armando R., Manhattan Beach

10. ** Suppose you bring an unlicensed pet to Hermosa Animal Hospital or any VCA-owned company for treatment or a checkup. In that case, they will allegedly report the pet to your home city without your agreement. Based on VCA information, the city will mail you a pet license bill. I know someone who said this happened. Has anyone else experienced this? —- Hollace W., Hermosa Beach

11. ** I stand with Israel! —- Amy B., Manhattan Beach

12. ** Last Saturday, five criminals shattered Manhattan Beach jewelry store exhibits and stole stuff until an employee shot them. In broad daylight, Prestige Jewelers, 3001 N. Sepulveda Blvd., was robbed at about 12:40 p.m. The City and the Police Chief are trying to lull the citizens into believing things have never been better or safer. No one is buying it. We have eyes. —- Greta L., Manhattan Beach

14. ** After WWII, it took the Allies months or years to discover Germany’s war crimes. Because Nazis wanted to hide them. Hamas broadcast live in October 2023. I stand with Israel. —- Garrison H., Manhattan Beach

20. ** I constantly see creeps on bikes with backpacks checking doorknobs and packages on doorsteps on every dog walk in south Redondo, morning and night. The police gave up since the government no longer enforces it. Good individuals have stopped calling in. —- Donald P., Redondo Beach

21 ** While there still have been no arrests in the first Pasha Jewelry armed robbery over a year and a half ago, the City Council found valuable time to adopt a Resolution adding a second official City flower by designating the Camellia as the City’s historical flowering shrub. I am not joking. —- Ray M., Manhattan Beach

22 ** The Democratic Party is plagued by members who give tacit approval to Hamas, Rashida Tlaib being chief among them. The easiest thing in the world for her to say is, “Hamas committed acts of evil. Their cause is not the Palestinian cause.” But she doesn’t have the guts or moral compass to say that. —- Wally N., Manhattan Beach

23 ** Each residential address in Hermosa Beach will be allowed a single guest parking permit following approval at the Oct. 10 Hermosa Beach City Council meeting. In the past, a “guest permit” was considered part of the city’s parking permit program as a residential parking pass or a “hang tag” that could be transferred to guests. Residents can get a guest permit without being associated with a registered car. Residents only need proof of residence to get a guest parking tag. —- Editor’s Note

MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

WOKE • SAFETY • CITY • CRIME • POLITICS

** It is obscene that Mira Costa has rejected a female student from the Girl’s varsity tennis squad in favor of a male player. Not only did the school destroy her rights, but they will now harm multiple girls at SoCal schools who will be forced to compete against and usually lose to a male. I made brief remarks to this effect at a recent MBUSD board meeting. Not that that will have any effect. MBUSD, as we all know, is a parochial school system under the Church of Gender Ideology. Beyond the school district, assembly member Al Muratscuhi needs to answer for this. He voted for the bill ending Girl’s rights to single-sex sports (AB-1266) and is a zealous supporter of gender ideology. —- RD, Manhattan Beach

** Mr. Bowes’ request we respect the privacy of MBUSD students seems a disingenuous attempt to squash the conversation. There is no privacy left to be respected. This poor kid had been stripped of it years ago in an open letter from the father. We should all be loving toward transgender kids, especially those to whom irreversible physical harm has been done before the age of consent. However, the MBUSD Board is not asking for love and kindness. MBUSD Board is imposing affirmation and celebration of cross-sex medical interventions on minors, and MBUSD Board is not setting that just on adults but also on children and adolescent girls. This is the MBUSD Board’s specific decision. Even if BOARD members wrap themselves up in the edicts of the California Interscholastic Federation and the US Department of Education, their decision is nonetheless a violation of Title IX, which requires sexual equality for women not because of their “gender identity” but precisely because of their biological distinction. Other school districts have recognized that and are ready to take on the challenge to the Supreme Court if necessary. MBUSD Board, instead, has decided to sacrifice MBUSD girls to the prevailing woke gender orthodoxy because they agree with it and believe in it. And this is shameful. —- Lucia La Rosa, Manhattan Beach

** It’s a start, Manhattan Beach: Under Manhattan Beach’s law, E-bike riders younger than 18 must wear helmets. All riders must be in marked bike lanes on streets. Bicycles cannot ride on sidewalks or pedestrian-only roads (called “walk streets”), in plazas, on grass areas and lawns, on the Strand, at the Civic Center, at the library, or in parking lots and structures owned by the city, county or state. All riders must abide by traffic signals. All riders must yield to pedestrians. A 20 mph speed limit will be enforced on the beach bike trail. —- Fred R., Manhattan Beach

** I hope you all in Manhattan Beach received the info in your mail on the new proposed Storm and Drain taxes (they call them fees). It included a protest form that you can mail in. Please remember to send your protest form by November 6 if you want to stop this new tax. You only need 50% plus one to defeat this. You can find out more information or get a form at www.manhattanbeach.gov/stormdrainfee or you can contact Julie Bondarchuk at 310-802-5564 or email at jbond@manhattanbeach.gov —- Doreen Yusifzai, Manhattan Beach

** Regarding Stewart Fournier interview – I read with interest the interview with Stewart Fournier who ran for Manhattan Beach City Council last year and lost. In one statement he refers to Manhattan Beach as a “densely democratic town.” Actually that is not true. 42% of registered voters in 2020 were registered Democrats and 58% were Republican or No political preference. What is also interesting is how the local residents vote on initiatives. There were twelve ballot measures voted on in the 2020 election. Manhattan Beach voters voted the Republican position on nine of the twelve. This includes rejecting issuing more bonds for Stem Cell research, rejecting increasing property taxes on commercial property, rejecting bringing back affirmative action, opposing letting 17 year olds vote in primary elections, opposing ending Proposition 13 protections for inherited property, opposing increasing rent control by cities (this was rejected 75% to 25%), opposing Expanding Dialysis Clinic requirements, and opposing ending cash bail. The voters supported the initiative supported by the Republicans and opposed by the Democrats that gutted AB5 and once again made app. based drivers (Uber and Lyft) independent contractors. It is pretty clear from this that many voters do not support the agenda of the Democratic party. Even in the entire State of California voters agreed with the Republican position on seven of the twelve propositions. The question is, why do voters reject on a regular basis initiatives placed on the ballot by the Democratic Party, and then continue to vote for the people whose policies they oppose. —- Russ Lesser, Former MB Mayor

MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT RECENTLY APPROVED A NEW BAIL SCHEDULE THAT IS SET TO TAKE EFFECT IN ALL OF LA COUNTY ON OCTOBER 1ST?

** All this will do is increase the amount of shoplifting, petty theft, etc. by repeat offenders who don’t really have to worry about being arrested or prosecuted. Another example of public officials disregarding the will of the people. Proposition 25, a measure that replaced cash bail with risk assessments was on the 2020 November election. It was opposed by 57% of Manhattan Beach voters and was also opposed by a majority of all California voters. —- Russ Lesser, Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

** “The purpose of bail was to ensure that the defendant continues to appear for trials and doesn’t flee. If they don’t make court appearances, they forfeit the money and the court may issue an arrest warrant. With the new bail schedule, many defendants will be cited or booked and released, then flee. Of course, they will sign a promise to appear and in many instances an arrest warrant will be issued when they fail to appear. The bottom line is without bail being posted, the likelihood of defendants fleeing increases significantly. As for its impact on Manhattan Beach, it may be just another policy that erodes law and order in our community, like failing to prosecute misdemeanors.” —- Mark Burton, Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

** Implementing zero-bail policies represents an insane gamble with our communities’ safety, likely to increase crime rather than alleviate it. While proponents argue that these policies address socio-economic disparities, they fail to acknowledge the potential consequences on crime rates and public security. Zero-bail policies remove the financial deterrent, encouraging defendants to attend court hearings and comply with the law. Without this accountability, individuals charged with crimes might be tempted to re-offend, knowing they can easily evade immediate consequences. This leniency sends a dangerous message: criminal actions bear no immediate repercussions, leading to a potential surge in criminal activities. Buckle up! —- Sara Garcia, El Segundo

HOME PURCHASES ACROSS THE US ARE GETTING CANCELED AT THE HIGHEST RATE IN ALMOST A YEAR AS RISING BORROWING COSTS WEIGH ON BUYERS?

** My guess is none of the 60,000 purchasers have a written budget. This basic tool can make a profound difference in a person’s financial life. Wanting to be financially successful and not having a written budget is like wanting to play profession football without bothering to learn how to block and tackle. —- Phillip Cook, Certified Financial Planner
