MB WEEKLY:
EXCLUSIVE READER QUESTIONS
TO MB MAYOR
RICHARD MONTGOMERY

Dear Mayor: MR. MAYOR, ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE CITY’S CURRENT EFFORTS TO PROTECT RESIDENTS AND THEIR PETS FROM COYOTES?
A: Yes, I am satisfied with our efforts to protect residents and pets as a complete coyote master plan is in place and allows trapping if necessary.

Dear Mayor: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BEING MAYOR OF MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: The fact that you face different problems and issues every day.

Dear Mayor: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING RUNNING FOR POLITICAL OFFICE IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: Advice? Run to serve the city and make clear how you can make the city better. We have seen candidates run to feed their egos. For example, one candidate has run and “lost four consecutive elections”! This is after he was removed from office by the voters after one term. Another candidate that lost the election in 2022 was so focused on the L.A. County District attorney and direction of the state government that residents told me that she needed to focus on the city and issues in our control.

Dear Mayor: DURING THE SUMMER, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT, THE DOWNTOWN AREA FEELS CHAOTIC WITH LITTLE POLICE PRESENCE. WHY CAN’T THE CITY HAVE OFFICERS PRESENT DOWNTOWN ON FOOT OR BY BIKE?
A: Contrary to some opinions, and in anticipation of the summer crowds, we have increased our police presence downtown which includes motor officers, patrol cars and even a bicycle patrol.

Dear Mayor: THE CURRENT DISTRICT ATTORNEY, GEORGE GASCON, IS A DISGRACE TO HIS OFFICE. WHY HAVEN’T YOU BEEN MORE FORCEFUL IN SAYING SO, MAYOR?
A: We have seen two recalls fail miserably. Ranting about the policies of the DA is not productive. We had a former council member comment continuously and she did not win RE-Election. Voters need to show up in 2024 and vote to replace him. Residents want council to focus on city issues that we can control.

Dear Mayor: HOW MANY CITATIONS DID THE CITY ISSUE THIS YEAR FROM ILLEGAL E-BIKE BEHAVIOR, MAYOR?
A: The police chief can answer that question for you directly as I do not have those statistics and they change daily.

The Friendship Foundation

Q: WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR FOUNDING THE FRIENDSHIP FOUNDATION?
A: The inspiration for founding the Friendship Foundation stemmed from recognizing a significant gap in our society. We became acutely aware of the overlooked and undervalued segment of our population – unique children and young adults who were on the spectrum. Witnessing the immense challenges and pain that families faced, with their loved ones unable to fully participate in the beautiful world we live in, fueled our determination to make a positive change. In response to this pressing need, we embarked on the journey of creating a program that would address these issues. Little did we anticipate the astounding success and profound impact it would achieve over time, touching the lives of thousands. Our ultimate goal was, and continues to be, fostering inclusivity and providing a supportive platform for these exceptional individuals to thrive and be embraced by society. The Friendship Foundation has become a beacon of hope, bringing joy, understanding, and meaningful connections to the lives of those we serve.

Q: WAS THE PROCESS MORE DIFFICULT THAN YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE?
A: Actually, it was much easier. The level of acceptance, enthusiasm, and collaboration we received from schools, the city, and the community was overwhelmingly positive. This support provided us with a significant jumpstart, propelling us forward with incredible momentum. The success we achieved surpassed our wildest imaginations, and its tangible impact on individuals’ lives was both remarkable and deeply meaningful. The journey, though not without its challenges, was a testament to the power of collective effort and the unwavering belief in our mission.

Q: WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE MANHATTAN BEACH COMMUNITY?
A: What makes the Manhattan Beach community truly special is not just the specific location, but the remarkable people who call it home. Having lived in various places worldwide, I can attest that the residents of Manhattan Beach/ South Bay possess a unique quality that sets them apart. The friendliness, compassion, and genuine care they demonstrate towards one another is truly powerful and heartwarming. It is evident that the people here are driven by a deep sense of community and a desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others, regardless of their backgrounds. This collective spirit of standing up for each other and supporting fellow human beings is what makes this community exceptional. We are fortunate to reside in such a distinctive part of the world, surrounded by individuals who genuinely care about the well-being of the community and its residents. It is this shared sense of camaraderie and mutual support that makes Manhattan Beach truly extraordinary.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: Choosing a favorite movie is always a tough task, but if I had to pick one, it would be “My Cousin Vinny.” Being a New Yorker myself, this film resonates deeply with me as a real New York movie. The humor and wit displayed throughout the movie never fail to make me laugh, bringing back fond memories of my youth in New York.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Julie Moe Reynolds

Executive Director Of Palos Verdes Performing Arts

Q: HOW DID YOUR PERFORMING ARTS CENTER BEGIN, AND WHEN?
A: In 1973, Joan Moe had the vision to build a theatre on the Peninsula. In 1977, Joan Moe and Agnes Moss, with the help of twenty Peninsula citizens, formed a non-profit organization to fill the unmet needs of the community. A survey determined the need to build a performing arts theatre for professional productions that would also be available for community use. Trustees President, Agnes Moss, named Joan Moe Chair of the Theatre Management Board. She had the responsibility to raise the start-up capital for construction and operating expenses for the Theatre. Ernie Hahn and Ron Florence the developers of the shopping mall, known as The Promenade on the Peninsula, agreed to give the organization the land and shell of the building. The Ken and Eileen Norris Foundation provided a million dollars to kick-off the fundraising efforts. In September of 1983, a week of performances, celebrated the opening of the Theatre. Providing professional performances, a venue for community rentals, a Community Outreach Program for the underserved in the South Bay, support group variety shows and the education classes and productions soon became a strain on the 450-seat theatre facility. In 1990 Dick Moe, then Chairman of the Management Board, formed a committee to obtain property and raise the start-up capital to build the Harlyne J. Norris Pavilion. The Pavilion was completed in 1999 and now the facility hosts the business offices, theatrical performances, performance classes and a rental facility for the community. The non-profit organization rental fee is reduced to benefit local organizations. The Forum acoustics are excellent for any type of performance. With the opening of the Norris Pavilion in 1999, the education department was established. The education program that has 1600 students attending classes and summer camps annually at the Pavilion and produced four or more musical shows each year. The two facilities combined comprise the Palos Verdes Performing Arts and are a designated, non-profit, 501c3 organization. The Center is supported by donations from individuals and local businesses, support groups and an annual fundraising event. Income from ticket sales and facility rentals, volunteers and some volunteer staff have made it possible for the Center to achieve a positive cash flow with thirty-eight years of success.

Q: WHAT DO YOU FIND UNIQUE ABOUT RUNNING A BUSINESS IN THE SOUTH BAY?
A: I have run several businesses throughout my career in Southern California, Texas, Chicago, Kansas, and Florida. Running a business in the South Bay is no different than running my other businesses in Southern California.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING YOUR PERFORMING ARTS CENTER?
A: The most challenging part is fundraising for our non-profit performing arts center. We strive to raise $1,000,000 annually to keep financially solvent and continue to further our mission objective of enriching the South Bay community and fostering performing arts through professional performances, educational and outreach programs, and maintaining venues for community use for cultural activities. The revenue generated from tickets for productions only allow us to strive to break even on the cost of the production itself, and does not address overhead costs such as utilities, building maintenance, staff salaries, etc.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: “Ever After: A Cinderella Story.” Starring Drew Barrymore.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: Scorpio

Q: WHAT SHOW ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT NEXT YEAR?
A: That is so hard to pick, as I love them all – So it’s a tie between Broadway Rox in November (BROADWAY ROX is a new, upbeat live concert celebrating the contemporary musicals of Broadway. It combines the best of classical musicals with elements of a fun rock show for an epic, one-of-a-kind concert event.), and our Professionally Produced Production of A Chorus Line in Late April of 2024!

Q: HOW WOULD SOMEONE APPLY IF THEY WANTED TO WORK AT THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER?
A: Contact me directly via email at julier@pvperformingarts.com

Protein bars can offer substantial health benefits over traditional candy bars. The good ones are packed with essential nutrients, protein, and fiber, making them a great source of nutrition for active individuals. Candy bars are high in sugars and unhealthy fats with minimal nutritional value. A bar with higher protein content (more than 20g) also slows the absorption of sugars into your system. However, it’s essential to read labels carefully as not all protein bars are created equal; some can contain excess sugars and artificial ingredients, diluting their health benefits. A good protein bar should have less than 5g of sugars, more than 20g of protein, and be 100% natural, free of artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols like maltitol.

Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

Kudos to new L.A. Councilmember Traci Park, the new L.A. City councilwoman who replaced road-diet Mike Bonin. Ms. Park has shown political courage in cleaning up Jefferson Avenue near Ballona Wetlands (MORE). The years-long degradation on Jefferson Blvd was awful for the homeless humans, harmful to the wetlands, and an embarrassment to the area. I plan to drop Councilmember Park a line thanking her for her leadership. Please join me by writing to: councilmember.park@lacity.org

At the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting on July 11th, the Board voted unanimously to support a motion by Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Hilda Solis to establish a “Universal Right to Counsel” for all renters throughout L.A. County. This means that the County would pay for private lawyers hourly to fight against lawful evictions rather than helping to pay the rent that renters duly owe for the housing being provided to them.

1. If you want to learn about people’s opinions on a product, Google Reddit. You’ll get real people arguing compared to the SEO Google results.

2. Some banks charge you $20 monthly for an account, while others charge you $0. If you’re with one of the former, have a good explanation for what that $20 is buying.

3. Things you use for a significant fraction of your life (bed: 1/3rd, office chair: 1/4th) are worth investing in.

Oath Pizza, El Segundo

Q: WHAT IS THE ORIGINAL STORY OF OATH PIZZA?
A: My business partners, Garish Talwar and Kulwant Jafal, and I have been looking for a franchise to invest in for quite some time. We wanted to invest in a franchise that was both personal and scalable. We discovered Oath Pizza in a QSR Magazine. We reached out, went to try the product, and fell in love with what Oath Pizza had to offer. The atmosphere, executive staff, and pizzas themselves are all excellent. We believe we have the greatest product and an amazing staff to serve the local community. Oath Pizza began in a little beachfront cafe on Nantucket Island out of a desire to create a pizza as feel-good as the island it was named for. And every great pizza must begin with a fantastic crust. Oath developed a recipe by using authentic ingredients, hand-stretching, grilling, and searing in avocado oil. There are now 11 operational Oath Pizza locations, three of which are franchised. Only two restaurants are located in the West, in California and Washington, while the remainder are located on the East Coast.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU OPEN UP IN EL SEGUNDO?
A: El Segundo is a beautiful and welcoming community. So far, we’ve had a fantastic time getting to know the area residents and businesses. The best aspect is that we are only a few minutes away from the beach.

Q: ARE YOU ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY?
A: We strive to be better neighbors in our community. We have contacted a number of local children’s sports leagues. We’ve had several discussions with customers who are both parents and local business owners. We also belong to the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce. Our mission is to give back through helping local schools, community activities, and/or children’s sports teams.

Q: WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT OATH PIZZA?
A: Oath Pizza is unique in that it fills you full without making you feel guilty. We utilize organic meats, hand-cut all of our vegetables, and produce the majority of our sauces and drizzles in-house.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF RUNNING YOUR BUSINESS?
A: We entered this business understanding there would be numerous challenges, just like any other. We break down every challenge in order to find a solution through analytical thinking. Each challenge helps us to develop as a team and learn more about the business.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: The Sandlot

A: Conveying the idea, to our guests and to the team, that it’s not just about coffee and donuts, but also relationships.

Manhattan Beach

We can no longer deny an increasing crime problem in Manhattan Beach. With the recent announcement that L.A. County will adopt sweeping policies to reduce cash bail requirements, most people arrested for misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies will no longer be required to post bail to be released from county jail while they await arraignment. Our community and its leaders need to take action now to ensure that our city has the necessary resources and plans in place and inform the residents what those plans are, and allow for our comment.

Manhattan Beach

Yesterday I read a story about Sand Dune Park and all the new plants placed by the boy scouts dying from lack of watering. I must admit that this bothered me, even though I live on the East Side. What occurred here was some error. In the thread, Steve Napolitano said that the council has responsibility for the Staff and that the council is responsible. Not understanding that “the staff” includes the city manager and department heads, I assumed the council was getting into the weeds; in this case, I would want to hold the manager and directors responsible and wonder why the council would let this occur without taking definitive action. Steve rightly corrected my assumption, but I am still unsatisfied with the response. I was a management consultant in Operating Rooms for over 20 years, and my company would get called in when there were complaints from the department’s “customers,” physicians, or patients or when a “near miss,” significant error, or patient death occurred. Invariably, the reason these things happened was multi-factorial. The causes would include communication issues, flawed processes, and personnel not following documented protocols. I would categorize what occurred at Sand Dune Park as a “near miss.” I would also categorize the recent delays in communication regarding several armed robberies as “near misses.” This leads me to believe that there are multiple problems within City Hall. Are there communication issues between Council and Staff? Is Staff not communicating effectively with line personnel? Are line staff following documented protocols, or are the protocols and processes flawed? I do not pretend to have the answer here, but where there is smoke, there is fire. This should be addressed before it kills the spirit of our community.

A Target employee had to catch up with him to tell him not to do that. With kids running in and out of aisles, someone can easily get hurt. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

Our community’s “Crown Jewel” is Downtown Manhattan Beach. It’s so charming, with a great selection of shops and restaurants. The armed robbery of Pasha last year should have been a clarion call for a regular police presence in Downtown Manhattan. As we all know, the presence of a police officer is the most effective way to prevent and deter crime. Previously, MBPD has done “foot beat” patrols in Downtown Manhattan Beach that prevented and inhibited crime. Why not now?

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Kathy Winterhalder

Co-Founder Of The Distinguished Speaker Series

Q: WHAT IS SPECIAL AND UNIQUE ABOUT THIS YEAR’S NEW SPEAKER SERIES?
A: We took a couple of seasons off from bringing a controversial political speaker to our line-up. The opportunity to invite Liz Cheney came up and she is currently the most anticipated speaker. Goldie Hawn is going to be a lot of fun and Thomas Friedman never disappoints. Lisa Genova is one of the top TED speakers of all time, her talk on the brain will be fascinating as well as Dr. Moogega Cooper’s visuals of space and her role at JPL. I can’t forget General H.R. McMaster, with so much going on in the world, it is always great to get a general’s personal take.

Q: YOUR DAUGHTERS HAVE RECENTLY ENTERED THE BUSINESS, AND HOW ARE THEY DOING?
A: They are doing great! They both gave up amazing jobs in Chicago and Washington DC, to come work for the family business. They have been invaluable as we have had to get more creative post COVID.

Q: IS GETTING PEOPLE TO LIVE EVENTS MORE DIFFICULT IN A POST-COVID WORLD?
A: It’s been tougher than we thought. The only thing we experienced close to this was the Recession in 2008. We rode that out by investing more in our speaker line-up and that saved us. COVID was a completely different story. Who would have ever thought we would have been locked out of indoor live-entertainment for as long as we were. Luckily many of the speakers were willing to reschedule and keep their commitments and our sponsors and patrons hung in there with us. They didn’t ask for refunds when our 2020 season was cut short. When we finally opened, many while still wary, watched online instead of cancelling. Last season, when we were halfway through, our South Bay Series was sold-out. Interest has been really strong, we currently have less than 40 tickets left at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. We’re Back!

Q: WHAT IS THE BEST WAY FOR PEOPLE TO GET INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR SPEAKER SERIES FOR TICKETS?
A: www.speakersla.com. We are also in the office Monday – Friday 10:30-4:00 to answer any questions at (310) 546-6222.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN THE MANHATTAN BEACH AREA?
A: The Strand House for out-of-town guests and special occasions, lunch is Simmzy’s, Becker’s sandwiches, Ercoles burgers, and Un Caffe Altamura. We love Slay Italian and Slay Hermosa and Rock ‘N Fish for dinner.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: Pisces (Is This An L.A. Thing?)

Q: WHAT IS THE SECRET OF THE SUCCESS OF YOUR EXTRAORDINARY BUSINESS?
A: Listen to our patrons and treat them like family. We survey our audience every year to see who they are most interested in experiencing live and the topics that they are excited in learning more about. For example, Liz Cheney was the #1 choice on our survey last season. I think the secret sauce is also bringing our unique form of entertainment to the community instead of asking people to drive to Downtown L.A. Everyone enjoys seeing friends and neighbors in the lobby before each show. We are so lucky that our hometown community that we love so much, loves us back.

MB WEEKLY – REAL ESTATE:

Jared Goff, the former L.A. Rams quarterback who guided the team to the 2018 Super Bowl before being dealt to the Detroit Lions, was the buyer of the South Bay estate that sold for $10.5 million in the spring. Records indicate Goff purchased the French Country-style estate from “Modern Family” executive producer Danny Zuker and his photographer wife Annette Lombardi for the exact $10.5 million asking price. The property had recently been rented at $30,000 a month. The home was formerly owned by MLB pitcher Ken Brett, and Shaquille O’Neill lived there at one point in his Lakers career.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:

The Manhattan Beach City Council recently approved a 2nd Library to be built in Polliwog Park. That decision defies the wishes of MB residents who, in a statistically reliable survey, rated maintaining MB parks and open space as the number ONE important MB service – they ranked an eastside library at the bottom, 24 out of 25: Community Opinion Survey | City of Manhattan Beach. The 2nd Library will remove mature trees and introduce vehicles and non-parkgoers into Polliwog. So, Council wants to “pave paradise and put up a parking lot?” A 2nd Library adds to traffic and parking problems around students and e-bikes. The old Manhattan Heights library and Pay-n-Play on Marine have better access and parking. Eastside MB residents have endured years of construction on the MB reservoir and other projects. Readers should question political motivations and say NO to the needless development of our MB parks.

Manhattan Beach

I just filed a report with a lovely MB officer who came out about an event at our house in the tree section. We’ve lived in it for 40+ years. For the FIRST TIME, a man came into the yard from the back gate by the garage facing Flournoy with no home across from it – a total stranger. I quickly jumped up, slammed the kitchen door in his face, and asked what the h he was doing in our backyard. He looked Eastern European, slim, with a slight mustache, about 5’7, in the late 20’s, early 30’s. He said he was delivering a package…holding a long plastic opaque bag. No labels, address on it, etc. No “package” I’ve ever seen. He left. The officer told me today that a ring from South America is operating in MB, using rental cars, liking corner houses as more in and out options, using props (delivery “bag”), etc. Very creepy. Putting locks now on all gates, bells, beware of dog signs, etc. Be aware of anyone walking around that sends an alarm. I would have gotten the creeps if I saw him on the street. Be sure and keep doors and gates locked.

Manson murderer Leslie Van Houten released to freedom. When I think of the victims literally rotting in their graves while this murderer is released to freedom, I become sick to my stomach. What kind of a society have we become in which we allow murderers their freedom? Can you imagine the pain this must cause the family members of the victims? Governor Newsom, you should be ashamed of yourself!

Manhattan Beach

Private equity firms have started acquiring doctor practices recently to create influential medical groupings nationwide. Researchers from the Petris Center at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, a progressive think tank in Washington, D.C., found that the medical groups were linked to higher prices in their respective markets, particularly when they held a dominant share. The cost of care climbed by double digits in three specialties – gastroenterology, dermatology, and obstetrics and gynecology – when a company owned more than 30% of the market. This implies that doctors now have “quotas” and that the era of the kind, considerate Doctor is almost entirely over. If your Doctor’s office is starting to feel like a medical McDonald’s, now you know why.

SALES VOLUMES HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASED DUE TO THE FEW RESIDENCES IN THE MANHATTAN BEACH MARKET ALL YEAR?

** The foundation and landscape of the economic catastrophe that occurred during 2007-2010 bear no comparison to the current variables impacting Manhattan Beach’s real estate market. Back then, there was a significant surge in sales volume driven by the justified fear of equity loss resulting from nationwide bad loan practices, which created a strong motivation to sell. However, the present economic stability, which has exceeded expectations, coupled with widespread refinancing opportunities and historically low-interest rates that many residents took advantage of before the remarkable surge in rates last summer, provide a relatively limited incentive for homeowners to sell. In simpler terms, unless there is an urgent need to sell, there is currently no compelling reason to do so, given that home values are either stable or showing a slight increase. —- Stewart Fournier, Realtor

** People aren’t opportunistically selling, people are selling because of a life change. Many are choosing to keep their homes and rent them out because they can create a positive cash flow because of the low interest mortgages already in place. —- Susan Pacini, Realtor

** It is incredible how few sales there are in the MB area but that is only indicative of low inventory. The market is still strong because inventory is low. If the market was weak, inventory would be rising which indicates there are no buyers. But the median sales price has dipped down to $2,812,000 from $3,137,000 in 2022. —- Vince Altamura, Realtor

** The housing inventory remains historically low due to the hesitation homeowners have to sell and trade their low interest rates for today’s rates. The low supply actually makes it a great time to sell and homes priced right are selling quickly with multiple offers. —- Tara Klein, Realtor
