MB WEEKLY:
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH
CATHEY GRAVES

MBUSD Board of Education President

Q: WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF BEING BOARD PRESIDENT OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: As Board President of MBUSD, I work with my colleagues to develop a vision and board goals each year. We use these goals to direct the work of the superintendent and his administrative team, both short-term and long-term. Unfortunately, effective planning is dependent on a reliable funding source, and California’s education funding, which is based on state tax revenue, fluctuates significantly from year to year, making it difficult to develop programming and retain teachers with any certainty. This is why local funding sources, like the Measure MB parcel tax, which is on the ballot for renewal this March 5, are so important to MBUSD.

Q: WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST SATISFYING ASPECT OF YOUR POSITION?
A: I have enjoyed working with community members, as well as an exceptional group of administrators and board colleagues, who listen, care, and truly want to make a difference in the lives of the students in our district. It is refreshing to see decisions made without regard to politics but instead focused on student excellence and well-being.

Q: ARE YOU PLEASED WITH THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRESS OF THE MANHATTAN BEACH SCHOOLS?
A: Absolutely. First and foremost, as a parent of 4 children, I can personally attest to the excellence of the education my children received in MBUSD schools, which created the foundation for their studies and work ethic in college and career. I am pleased that Manhattan Beach schools continue to be recognized for their academic excellence. This past year, our youngest students made improvements in math, and English Language Arts (ELA) metrics in state testing. More students than ever before took honors and AP classes at Mira Costa and passed those classes. We continue to see progress in special education, where we far outperform the state average in standardized tests with the implementation of evidence-based best practices. Our enrollment is increasing and absences are declining, bucking state and national trends. This year, we implemented additional intervention, review, and enrichment opportunities for our students, as well as increased professional development and collaboration time for teachers, and we are excited to see the impact those efforts will have on student academic growth in the coming years.

Q: IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY REGARDING THE RECENT “HATE SPEECH” INCIDENT IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: The incident that you reference gave MBUSD an opportunity to deepen its commitment to ensuring a safe and supportive school environment for all students. We have worked with local faith communities, including many Temples and Synagogues, the ADL, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, parents, students, and community leaders to create lesson plans and model anti-bullying efforts which we believe will make our students better citizens, parents, workers, and leaders in the complex, rapidly changing world they will inherit. I am deeply grateful for the support of so many, and I know their insights and sensitivity will help guide our work moving forward.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: Virgo

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: I love historical fiction, and so count Hidden Figures and Schindler’s List amongst my favorite movies. My favorite Disney movie is Mulan.

Q: WHAT BOOK MOST IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
A: I love the strong women characters in books like The Red Tent by Anita Diamant and more recently Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Sarah Simms

Third Generation Simms

Q: CONGRATULATIONS ON THE KETTLE’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY. DID YOU EVER IMAGINE YOU’D HIT THE 50-YEAR MARK IN THE EARLY DAYS?
A: 50 is certainly a big milestone, especially in the restaurant industry. I started contributing to the restaurant about 20 years ago because the opportunity to work alongside my Dad (Scott P Simms) and our longtime team there was something I knew was a very special opportunity. You’d have to ask my Uncle Tom (Simms) about his feelings about the “early days” as he was present the day the Kettle was purchased, but from what I’ve come to know in my lifetime, is that The Kettle would be here as long as there was a community to support it and a very passionate group of people to run it. The history in these walls and the energy that lives in the building – it’s all very special.

Q: WHAT IS THE SECRET SAUCE THAT MAKES THE KETTLE WORK SO WELL?
A: The secret sauce is 100% our team – they are how we are able to do what we do. We have the best staff in the front and back of house. Also, we are a true family business. My grandfather (Arthur J Simms) and Uncle Tom (Simms) started the magic back in the ’70s and my father (Scott P Simms) dedicated his life to running The Kettle and leading such an incredible team including our longtime kitchen manager, Florentino Pelayo and general manager, Jeff Byron.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING THE KETTLE?
A: Serving 3 meal periods (breakfast, lunch and dinner) all day every day (almost) 24/7. Our kitchen prep team is a well-oiled machine and there is always action happening but we love that you can come in at 9 p.m. on a Thursday and have Eggs Benedict or a stack of Banana Pancakes if that’s what you are in the mood for.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO EAT AT THE KETTLE?
A: Depends on the time of day but the things that feel the most iconic and have been steady loves throughout my life are probably the French Onion Soup, Honey Bran Muffins and Fried Zucchini with all the house made dressings for dipping – 1000 island, avocado buttermilk ranch, honey mustard, etc.

Q: THOUGH PROPHECY IS DUBIOUS BUSINESS, DO YOU BELIEVE THE KETTLE WILL BE AROUND FOR ANOTHER 50 YEARS?
A: Only time will tell 🙂

Q: WILL THE KETTLE EVER BE OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY AGAIN?
A: We are currently open “24 hours” on Friday & Saturday and then we are open until midnight Sunday-Thursday, we reopen daily at 6 a.m. for breakfast each day. Our #1 priority will always be the well-being and safety of our staff and when we make decisions about our hours they don’t happen without lots of conversation and input from our community and team. For now, this is the best plan of action but we are constantly adjusting and evolving so never say never!

Q: IS THANKSGIVING YOUR BUSIEST DAY OF THE YEAR? HOW MANY TURKEYS DO YOU SELL DURING THANKSGIVING?
A: It certainly is one of them. We sell close to 1,000 Thanksgiving dinners in addition to offering our full regular menu – it is a super fun day – we truly have the best patrons and community here in the South Bay and beyond.

Pandemic Puppies In Manhattan Beach Pose Puzzling Predicament – Dog Bites Surge, Prompting Public Health Concern:

The adorable pandemic puppies that brought joy during lockdowns are now causing a public health concern. The Emergency Rooms and hospitals in the area have witnessed a staggering 70% increase in dog bite-related visits compared to 2005, with 41 E.R. visits or hospitalizations recorded in 2022 alone. While the pandemic led to a surge in pet adoptions, the consequences are becoming apparent as these once tiny, adorable puppies grow into energetic and sometimes unruly dogs. Experts speculate that changes in routines, socialization issues, and the increased presence of dogs in public spaces might contribute to the rise in dog bites. Authorities are urging pet owners to prioritize proper training and socialization to prevent future incidents, spotlighting the unexpected consequences of the pandemic puppy boom.

CRIME IN MANHATTAN BEACH:

On Jan. 29, police responded to Red Carpet Carwash due to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. According to witnesses, a homeless man argued with a car wash employee before lunging at the employee with a knife. The homeless man fled after the altercation, but police located and arrested him a short time later. The victim was not injured, police said.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW:

by Darby Winston

Reborn Coffee

Reborn Coffee in Manhattan Village, Manhattan Beach, is an outrageously expensive disappointment. With a tea priced at $5.50 and obligatory tipping, it feels like a blatant cash grab. The staff’s unfriendliness rivals that of a fast-food joint, making Starbucks seem like a welcoming haven, even at double the price. I ordered the blueberry matcha with oat milk on my second visit, hoping for a unique experience. However, the drink tasted like plain milk, showcasing the lack of quality ingredients. Reborn Coffee fails on multiple fronts, from the highly lackluster staff to subpar drinks. I won’t be back.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Dr. Lisa P. (Manhattan Beach)

It’s time to clean your damn water bottle. Reusable water bottles are a popular choice for staying hydrated while reducing environmental impact, but neglecting to clean them can lead to health risks. Mold, thriving in moist environments, poses a concern when water sits in a bottle for an extended period. Dr. Wanda Phipatanakul, an immunologist, warns that mold spores from the air and pipes can settle and multiply in stagnant water. Various types of mold, such as Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Stachybotrys, may colonize neglected bottles, exhibiting different colors and appearances. Regular cleaning is crucial to prevent the formation of a moldy haven inside your bottle. Not only does mold compromise the bottle’s integrity, but it also poses potential health hazards. To maintain the benefits of reusable bottles and avoid the pitfalls of mold, it’s essential to adopt proper cleaning practices, ensuring a hygienic and safe hydration experience.

DA Candidates United Against Gascon In South Bay:

At a debate Saturday, January 13, at the Peninsula Center Library, four of the 11 Los Angeles County District Attorney candidates criticized incumbent George Gascon for his liberal views. All said Gascon’s policies increased crime and made neighborhoods less safe. The 66th Assembly District Republican Central Committee sponsored the forum. Chairwoman Janice Webb stated Gascon neglected to attend. March 5 is the nonpartisan District Attorney primary. The top two vote-getters will compete in November if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Jessica C. (Manhattan Beach)

The scars of betrayal ran deep between my brother and me, etched into our once unbreakable bond by the corrosive influence of drugs. As the specter of addiction engulfed him in his teenage years, right here in Manhattan Beach, our paths diverged. The painful truth, long denied, emerged: he was the one who pilfered my cherished jewelry, a tangible casualty sacrificed at the altar of his addiction. Though he has had to tread the challenging path of recovery for nearly three decades, his remorseful apologies have circled everyone but me. The festering wounds refuse to heal. The dilemma of facing him at family gatherings, the unspeakable disgust welling within, paralyzes me. Confrontation seems futile, a potential spark for his defensive onslaught. The question lingers: endure the silent torment of shared spaces or sever ties to shield my wounded heart from further harm? Let me just put it this way: our last Thanksgiving, including a God-awful walk on the pier, was hell!

94% OPPOSE UNLICENSED CHAOS:
MB READERS UNITE AGAINST ROGUE VENDORS IN DOWNTOWN MANHATTAN BEACH!

“Where the HELL are the police?”

In a striking revelation from the latest MB Weekly Reader Poll, 94% of participants have vehemently voiced their opposition to unlicensed vendors peddling food in the heart of Downtown Manhattan Beach. The survey, designed to gauge public sentiment, has underscored discontent among residents and business owners regarding the unchecked presence of street vendors in this iconic coastal locale. The poll’s straightforward query, “Are you comfortable with unlicensed vendors selling food in Downtown Manhattan Beach?” elicited a resounding “no” from a massive majority, prompting an urgent call for action. Readers, dismayed by the lack of police oversight in the downtown area, were heard exclaiming, “Where are the police?” This outcry reflects a collective demand for increased law enforcement presence to curb unauthorized vending activities and maintain order. The poll exposes the community’s frustration with unregulated street vending and sparks a crucial conversation about the necessity for stringent regulations. Concerns about public health, safety risks, and the potential impact on compliant local businesses have thrust this issue into the spotlight, compelling residents to rally for a solution to reclaim the charm of Downtown Manhattan Beach. A long-time MB Business owner screamed: “WHERE THE HELL ARE THE POLICE?”

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Brian Kelleher

The Hook & Plow

Q: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN UP A RESTAURANT IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: One of my first jobs when I moved to the South Bay over 25 years ago was working at a restaurant that once stood a mere 100 yards away from our newest Hook & Plow location in Manhattan Beach. I always enjoyed working in such a cozy little beach town and the clientele that frequented were always so incredibly kind. It was a family style restaurant and I always thought that if I could one day open a restaurant and welcome those that made my job so enjoyable, it would be something special. With it now having been so long since those days, I’ve actually welcomed a few of those guests from back then but now they’re accompanied by not only their kids who are grown, but also grandkids as well. It’s an amazing feeling when that happens. Time flies when you truly enjoy what you do.

Q: WHAT DOES THE CONCEPT OF HOOK AND PLOW STAND FOR?
A: Since day one we have always strived to be a place that had “a little something for everyone.” We are a spot where you can come with a friend and enjoy a burger and a beer and right next to you could be a couple celebrating their 20th anniversary with a Tomahawk steak and a tasty bottle of Napa Cab. The next table over could be a family of five enjoying a fun family night out. No matter what the occasion, we can be that place you come to relax, celebrate, indulge or just sip and people watch.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING A RESTAURANT POST-COVID?
A: I’d have to say that the most challenging part of the business post-COVID would be staffing. I just feel that a lot of people in the industry relocated when times got tough and found that they were happy in their new place. We’ve been fortunate to have been able to put an all-star staff together at the Manhattan location. It’s been a tough couple years all around but hopefully in 2024 things will become a little easier for everyone in the business.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: Alright. I have to name 2 here. One, because it’s just an amazing classic and the second because it’s one that pulls at the heart strings in many ways. The first is Shawshank Redemption. I know I know. Who doesn’t like that movie. It’s just an amazing story with amazing performances by legends. The story telling, emotional depth and the tale of hope overcoming despair. Just incredible. The second movie many people may not have seen or heard of. It stars Jack Lemmon, Ted Danson and many others that turn into stars. It’s called “Dad.” It’s one that you keep a few Kleenex close by when you watch. It reminds one that sometimes we don’t pause to carve out the time to appreciate the importance of relationships in our lives until it’s too late. But it’s never too late. Bonus, part of it was filmed in my hometown of Duxbury, MA.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: I’m a Virgo. I don’t know much about the signs but I’m told I’m almost exactly what they say a Virgo should be like. Hope that’s a good thing.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO EAT AT HOOK AND PLOW?
A: So before we opened in Manhattan, my favorite was easily our breakfast burrito. It’s unique, so flavorful and you don’t leave hungry. But … since opening Manhattan, my new favorite is our Lobster Roll. It’s overflowing with east coast lobster meat, hint of mayo to hold things together and a lightly toasted brioche hot dog bun to hold in all the goodness.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESTAURANTS THAT YOU ENJOY IN THE MANHATTAN BEACH AREA?
A: There are so many great restaurants in MB that it’s hard to name a couple but I’ll try. I truly appreciate and enjoy what Sylvie and her team are doing at Love & Salt. I love a place where when you tell people about it, you don’t know if you should mention how great the food is first or the staff. That to me is the sign of a well-run establishment. When grabbing a tasty bite and a beer with a bud, Simmzy’s is one of my go-to’s. Mike and his team have got it figured out on many levels. No secret there.

MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

THE LOS ANGELES TIMES HAS ENDORSED DISTRICT ATTORNEY GEORGE GASCON FOR REELECTION

** Our D.A. George Gascon is the worst D.A. Los Angeles County has ever had. He will not prosecute misdemeanors nor allow his Deputy D.A.s to accompany crime victims to parole hearings as every predecessor has permitted. Manhattan Beach has approx. three hundred misdemeanor arrests, which Gascon will not prosecute, and he will not allow us to hire our own City Prosecutor. Criminals operate with little fear of consequences in Los Angeles County. Ask your favorite small business owners and neighbors: “Do you feel more or less safe since Gascon became D.A.?” With its endorsement of Gascon, the Los Angeles Times continues its rapid descent into irrelevance. —- Bob Holmes (Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

** I’m disappointed with the Los Angeles Times endorsement of District Attorney George Gascón for reelection, but their support for him is not surprising. Many in the DAs office have lost confidence in Gascón’s ability to lead, resulting in some challenging him in the 2024 election. As the District Attorney, Gascón is responsible for investigating and prosecuting criminal offenses on behalf of the People; however, Gascón has failed to fulfill his obligations to represent victims and their families. There has to be consequences for people who choose to be involved in criminal activity and there must be ramifications for the District Attorney who fails to hold them accountable for their actions. It’s time we put an end to the lawlessness in Los Angeles County. We must hold Gascón accountable for his failure to uphold his responsibilities as District Attorney and this can be done by making sure Gascón is not reelected in November 2024. —- Tim Hageman (Retired MB Police Captain & Host of Behind The Line Podcast)

** George Gascon has been a disaster as Los Angeles District Attorney. One example is that he refuses to prosecute misdemeanors such as shoplifting. In addition he does not allow cities to hire their own prosecutor or contract with another city. This hurts cities like Manhattan Beach that doesn’t have a city prosecutor. Nathan Hochman is a former prosecutor who worked in the U.S. Justice Department and is running for District Attorney. I asked him if a city felt that the District Attorney’s office was not doing the job that a city felt was appropriate would he allow the city to get their own prosecutor. He put in writing that he would not stand in the way of a city hiring their own prosecutor or contracting with another city. To my knowledge he is the only candidate who has stated this. I am supporting him for district attorney. —- Russ Lesser (Former mayor of Manhattan Beach)

Manhattan Beach Mayor Joe Franklin Responds To Bruce’s Beach Park Bronze Plaque Theft:

“It is very sad that these thieves fail to honor and respect history with this theft. It is more than a piece of bronze, but rather an important symbol of community which enabled us to move forward. Unfortunately, we join other cities in L.A. County that have endured the loss of historically significant bronze plaques. Our Council condemns this pitiful act and the city will replace the missing plaque as soon as possible while our Police Department continues their intensive work to bring the suspects to justice.” —- Joe Franklin (Manhattan Beach Mayor)

Manhattan Beach’s Light Gate Sculpture Unites Nature, Art, And Community:

The sun descends into the water and appears dead center of the Light Gate sculpture at the top of 14th Street between City Hall and the library two times a year, in November and January. Residents and others try to record the exact moment the sun appears in the keyhole. Light Gate by Harries Heder was commissioned for Manhattan Beach’s centenary. The glass and stainless steel construction was updated in 2019.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Lexi A. (Manhattan Beach)

Tipping has become the unexpected star in the bewildering circus of modern etiquette. We’ve entered an alternate universe where every transaction demands a financial encore. Will I soon find a tip jar next to the stirrups and speculum at my gynecologist’s office? “Great pelvic exam, Doc, here’s an extra 20%!” It’s absurd! Tipping started innocently enough at restaurants, but now it’s infiltrating every nook and cranny of our lives. Do I tip the mail carrier for successfully delivering my bills? Tipping madness, I hate it.

MBPD Stops Stolen Automobile With Stolen Plates, Items, And IDs:

Three suspects were apprehended on Sepulveda Avenue near Chili’s by Manhattan Beach Police for driving an unreported stolen car with two stolen license plates and Target merchandise. MBPD detained them on January 6 after a brief but meandering chase that began at Olive Garden. All three suspects were arrested for identity theft, and two had warrants. MBPD officers responded to a call concerning an unknown man inside a construction site on January 7. After being arrested for burglary and identity theft, this defendant was evaluated for mental health. In a third instance on January 8, MBPD officers discovered a stolen vehicle in a nearby city. After an MBPD traffic stop, the neighboring agency nabbed the culprit. The MBPD continues to caution citizens of car window smashes in street and driveway parking and not to keep obvious things in their cars. Eight car burglaries occurred January 4 – 10. One robbery, one vandalism, three home burglaries, and seven thefts were reported to MBPD.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Clay Tobias

The issue of homelessness in California worsens each year despite the outrageous financial investments made to address the crisis. Recent data reveals that nearly a third of the nation’s homeless population now resides in the state, with a 6% increase in homelessness. Despite pouring billions and billions into what is tragically referred to as the “Homeless Industrial Complex,” the problem is exacerbating rather than abating. This complex, comprising various organizations, programs, and initiatives to address homelessness, has grown substantially in size and cost. While the problem is worsening, lots of people are making lots and lots of your money. However, the efficacy of these endeavors is increasingly clearly ineffective. The soaring expenses without commensurate reductions in homelessness underscore the need for a comprehensive reevaluation of the strategies employed, urging politicians to explore innovative and more effective, even tougher solutions to alleviate the unsustainable crises that have existed for years in California.

The Famed South Bay Eatery, The Kettle, Opened Over 50 Years Ago:

The Kettle, a 50-year-old South Bay tradition, is Manhattan Beach’s public dining room and terrace. Locals go there to celebrate Dodgers, Kings, and Lakers championships, take the family out to brunch on a lazy Sunday morning, and sober up at Ercoles or Shellback Tavern, both South Bay dive bars from a previous era. After 17 months of a global epidemic, the Kettle remains a Manhattan Beach restaurant staple. Explore the restaurant to locate masked cooks and servers between the pass, tables, and cashier. The cozy cabin-meets-pub atmosphere draws regulars to dark red booths to order a club sandwich, veggie omelet, patty melt, or other American comfort food from the customized trifold menu. Like living by the beach, getting things wrong at the Kettle is nearly impossible.

MB POLICE CHIEF RACHEL JOHNSON
RESPONSE TO AN OPEN LETTER
TO THE NEW MAYOR:

In last week’s MB Weekly I read of the frustrations felt by Downtown Manhattan Beach business owners on December 28, 2023, when they observed bicyclists riding in an unsafe manner through Downtown. On that date (December 28, 2023), there were 100 calls for service in Manhattan Beach; none of those calls for service was from a community member reporting their observations regarding the bicyclists. I urge the community to promptly report such observations by calling the Manhattan Beach Police Department at 310-545-4566 for non-emergencies. In emergencies, dial 911.

Community members play a crucial role in enabling swift police action. It’s essential to understand that texting, emailing, or contacting others may not yield the timely response needed. Remember, your call matters. Call us first and call us any time on this or any other matter that requires law enforcement intervention.

The men and women of the Manhattan Beach Police Department are committed to our community. In 2023, our team of dedicated professionals responded to 34,864 calls for service and made 842 arrests. We share in your desire for a safe Manhattan Beach and we will continue to be there when you call us. If you see something, say something.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Tim Hageman
(Former Member of the MB Police Department)

I’m submitting an article in response to the open letter to Mayor Joe Franklin titled, Urgent Concerns Regarding E-Bike Chaos in Downtown – A Plea for Action (1-18-24). Before I retired from the Manhattan Beach Police Department in December 2021, I, along with two other department members, collaborated with a Manhattan Beach City Council member on the issues of eBikes safety. Our focus was eBikes riders under the age of eighteen. It’s been over two years since that meeting, yet the concerns regarding eBikes safety continue. The Manhattan Beach City Council must give clear direction and expectations as to what they want done to address these concerns. A staff report and a presentation at a City Council meeting detailing a plan to focus on eBikes safety should be required. The plan should be monitored for at least six months with periodic updates. A plan such as this is long overdue, and it must be considered a priority before a child is seriously injured or killed.

“WOULD YOU RATHER” INTERVIEW

Q: HAVE DINNER WITH ELON MUSK OR PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN?
A: If dinner with Elon Musk means a ride on his Spacex rocket to the International Space Station, then I’m in!

Q: SHOWER OR BATH?
A: Shower

Q: BREAKFAST FOR DINNER OR STEAK FOR BREAKFAST?
A: I have had more breakfasts for dinner than the other way around.

Q: WHO WAS A BETTER PRESIDENT, BILL CLINTON OR BARACK OBAMA?
A: As I recall, President Obama fell a bit short when throwing out the first pitch at baseball game. I’ll have to check the archives to see if President Clinton’s pitch made it to home plate.

Q: E-BIKE OR MOTORCYCLE?
A: I prefer a standard person powered bicycle (or, in my case, a stand up Elliptigo Bike) for the exercise. I’ve ridden many thousands of miles on a road bike.

Q: NO ALCOHOL FOR A MONTH OR NO TEXTING FOR A MONTH?
A: No alcohol. I have a drink far, far less than I text.

A more recent Manhattan Beach smart home with glass, cedar siding, and concrete walls shaped like little waves is listed for $29.9 million. The 9,479-square-foot, six-bedroom, nine-bathroom sustainable home has a sleek, modern design that makes it more than just a pretty face. Located on an extra-wide corner lot at the top of a hill in a neighborhood with subterranean utility connections, it also features bedrooms upstairs with direct ocean views. According to documents, the seller is tech investor Jeffrey Schumacher, who founded and serves as CEO of NAX (New Asset Exchange) Group, a provider of A.I. software. Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: 35 years.

Q: WHAT IS THE SECRET SAUCE THAT MAKES THIS COMMUNITY SO UNIQUE?
A: A small beach town character, filled with active, high performing, hardworking people, bordered by big sandy beaches and a beautiful ocean that’s home to a renowned surf spot.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT CONCERN ABOUT MANHATTAN BEACH IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
A: I’m concerned about the architectural direction our city is about to take, starting with the HighRose/Verandas project. Overbuilding is a colossal threat to our way of life in MB, the overbuilding propagated by opportunist builders who disregard local zoning laws and misuse State laws for the sole purpose of huge financial gain.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: Braveheart

Q: WHAT’S YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: Cancer

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN THE MANHATTAN BEACH AREA?

Q: DO YOU FEEL AS SAFE IN MANHATTAN BEACH TODAY AS YOU DID FIVE YEARS AGO?
A: Yes, I feel as safe in MB as I did five years ago. Note: I do not feel as safe in greater L.A. as I did five years ago.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW:

by Darby Winston

Fansea Sushi

Fansea Sushi in El Porto, Manhattan Beach, is a petite sushi restaurant with a mixed impression. The cozy ambiance and authentic staff create a relaxed atmosphere for a meal. However, the absence of prices on the menu raises concerns about transparency. Customers deserve to be informed upfront about the cost of their meal, and the omission of this crucial detail can lead to an uneasy dining experience. The food at Fansea Sushi is adequate, offering a selection of classic rolls and sashimi that cater to various tastes. Unfortunately, the overall dining experience is marred by the restaurant’s need for a very robust cleaning. Hygiene is a fundamental aspect of any dining establishment, and addressing this issue would significantly enhance the appeal of Fansea Sushi. In summary, it’s a place with potential, but improvements in transparency and cleanliness are essential for a more upbeat dining experience.

My recent air travel experience to Chicago was nothing short of a nightmare, reminding me of the infamous “Crap Landings” incident that recently unfolded on a Delta flight. The shocking tale of a fellow passenger pooping in their seat, leaving a foul mess, went viral after being shared on Reddit. Such incidents highlight travelers’ challenges, making a routine journey unforgettable. From unpleasant odors to surprises, air travel’s unpredictable nature sometimes leaves passengers in disbelief. While my experience may not have involved excrement, the discomfort, and frustration endured during the flight echoed the sentiment that air travel can be a rollercoaster of unexpected and unpleasant surprises. These incidents underscore the need for airlines to maintain cleanliness and address passenger concerns to ensure a more pleasant journey for everyone on board.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said that a guy who is accused of using a sledgehammer to kill a woman who was gathering recyclables on Christmas Eve at El Camino College is now in custody. El Camino College Police Sergeant Francisco Esqueda stated, “We believe the person on the security footage is a homeless person we’ve previously had contact with. … So we were able to go to the neighboring county park where he sometimes hangs out, and that’s where we found him.” Do you not feel proud to be a part of a culture that tolerates such behavior regularly? A woman who was battered with a sledgehammer will now lie rotting in her grave, according to police, who admit that they had previously communicated with this “unhoused neighbor” but did little to nothing.
