MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

SAFETY • CITY • CRIME • WOKE

** George Gascón’s tenure as the Los Angeles County District Attorney has been nothing short of a colossal failure, marked by a disturbing lack of transparency and accountability. The recent lawsuit filed by the Association of Deputy District Attorneys exposes the extent of Gascón’s evasion of public scrutiny. The union’s allegations of the DA’s office withholding records regarding controversial hires and the removal of inmates from death row are deeply troubling. Gascón’s refusal to comply with requests for public records demonstrates a blatant disregard for the principles of open governance. His office’s failure to respond or reliance on dubious legal justifications to avoid disclosure obligations indicates a leader more interested in hiding questionable decisions than serving the public interest. —- Sara Garcia (El Segundo)

** At PF Chang in Torrance, I noticed four teenage kids throwing traffic cones in front of cars. Other customers were not reacting, so I yelled and ran towards them; three ran away. The smallest kid did not run. And when I approached him, he held up his fists, challenging me to a fight. When I laughed and walked away from him, he walked in front of me and again held up his fists for a fight. The other kids did not run away as I initially thought. I assume they were hiding with their phone cameras to take video if I put my hands on the small kid confronting me. Then, the parents would be ready to sue me. BEWARE. —- Charles Golden (Manhattan Beach)

** I am writing to express my profound disappointment in new Mayor Joe Franklin’s recent vote to withdraw Manhattan Beach from the zero bail lawsuit. His explanation seemed like total gibberish, and it appears that your new agenda is merely aimed at gaining favor with the council team. As a concerned resident, I expected more principled decision-making. This move undermines the pursuit of justice and compromises the safety of our community. Our city deserves leadership grounded in integrity, not jive maneuvering. Very disappointing, Mayor! —- John E. (Manhattan Beach)

Restaurants

** The Rockefeller in Manhattan Beach has a nice new menu item. The new Salmon dish with rice was a pleasant surprise, way better than your average bar food. The salmon was cooked nicely and flavorful, and the rice complemented it well. The Key Lime Pie sealed the deal – it was light and enjoyable. It was not too tart or sweet, just right. The ambiance was chill, and the staff (Ken) was friendly. —- Alice M. (Manhattan Beach)

** The Steak Frites experience at Tin Roof Bistro in Manhattan Beach’s Manhattan Village is an absolute delight for any steak enthusiast – the 10 oz. Prime culotte is perfectly cooked, boasting a succulent and juicy texture that makes every bite a heavenly experience. The house made steak sauce adds a delightful depth of flavor, complementing the natural richness of the meat. Adding béarnaise sauce elevates the dish to a new level, providing a creamy and luxurious touch. Paired with perfectly crisp bistro fries, this meal at Tin Roof Bistro is a culinary delight. —- Wendi S. (Manhattan Beach)

Health

** Navigating a progressive and incurable disease is undoubtedly an incredibly challenging journey, both physically and emotionally. Striking a balance between acknowledging reality and maintaining a positive outlook is crucial for well-being. In facing such adversity, focusing on the present and minimizing the impact on your day-to-day life reflects resilience and strength. However, managing well-meaning inquiries from friends and family can complicate this situation. Communicating your desire for privacy regarding your health without offending is essential. Consider expressing your appreciation for their concern while explaining that you prefer to cherish the good days without constantly dwelling on the inevitable challenges ahead. —- Name Withheld by Request (Manhattan Beach)

** Visiting our grown children and grandchildren, who live far away, isn’t as joyful as we’d hoped. Our son’s wife struggles with an eating disorder, making meals a challenge. She’s fixated on unusual raw vegetable combinations, and our grandchild, influenced by her, follows suit. Sadly, the child is restricted from enjoying some common kid-friendly foods. This situation makes our visits less enjoyable as we navigate the complexities of meals and try to create a comfortable environment despite the dietary restrictions. It’s tough, but we cherish the moments we can share, hoping for a brighter, more relaxed future. —- Name Withheld by Request (Manhattan Beach)

** Recent medical research has shed light on the issue of tattoo inks in the United States. A study analyzing 54 commonly used tattoo inks has revealed that a staggering 45 of them contain undisclosed additives or pigments, some of which pose serious health risks. Polyethylene glycol, a common additive found in many of these inks, has been identified as a culprit that can lead to acute renal failure. Additionally, 2-phenoxyethanol, present in multiple inks, has been associated with toxic effects in high doses. The National Institutes of Health has listed potential health risks, including lung and liver irritation and kidney and nerve damage. As a doctor, this alarming information reinforces concerns about the potential health impact of tattoos. It is crucial for individuals considering tattoos to be aware of the potential risks associated with certain tattoo inks and to prioritize their health and well-being. —- Dr. Mitchell B.
