DUI doesn’t just mean alcohol. Driving while under the influence of marijuana, illegal drugs, or prescription meds can land you a DUI just as fast. A giant puff of marijuana smoke coming out of the driver’s window is a pretty good way to grab law enforcement attention. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, in 2021, 52% of all drivers killed in motor vehicle crashes who were tested, tested positive for legal and/or illegal drugs.

The issue of converting to a Charter City to protect local control over housing (and some other issues) is problematic. I look for information from informed, unbiased sources and am impressed by CalMatter’s explanation of this complex question. CalMatters is a nonpartisan and nonprofit news organization bringing Californians stories that probe, explain, and explore solutions to quality-of-life issues while holding our leaders accountable. We are the only journalism outlet covering America’s biggest state, 39 million Californians, and the world’s fifth-largest economy [according to the CalMatters website]. Here is the link to the full article, and the following are the arguments against becoming a Charter City, which, I feel, are germane to our challenge. It exceeds your 200-word limit, but this complex issue needs to be fully discussed in 200 words.

The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Joe Marcy
Newly Declared City Council Candidate
(PART ONE)

Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I’m a Manhattan Beach native that cares so deeply about our community. I’m a Pacific Panther, MBMS Wave and a Mira Costa Mustang. Spent my childhood playing in our parks and recreational facilities. A lifelong parishioner at American Martyrs. I worked my first job in the Manhattan Village. Made public service a priority – I serve as the Parking & Public Improvement Commissioner, Former Cultural Arts Commissioner and Chair, Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair Association Board Member & Past President, Leadership Manhattan Beach Alum and more.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO RUN FOR CITY COUNCIL IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I’m a hometown candidate who wants to protect our community and shape our future. Having served five years on commissions and fourteen years on the hometown fair board, it’s been a privilege to work closely with council, city staff, police and fire, our wonderful schools, local businesses, service organizations and our remarkable community. When you love your hometown, you do everything you can to protect it. It would be an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity. We have a lot to accomplish and we have to do it together.

Q: WHAT IS THE CENTRAL IDEA OF YOUR CAMPAIGN?
A: This campaign is not about me. It’s about us. It’s about being proactive and strategic in our approach and execution. Health and safety will always be our top priority.

What’s Important:

  • Feeling safe and welcome
  • Preserving our small beach town culture
  • Honoring our hometown heroes, veterans, volunteers, philanthropists, tenured and young leaders
  • Recognizing the dedication and service of our Police, Fire and City Staff
  • Supporting our legacy events and community traditions

I’m For:

  • Increasing police presence in Manhattan Beach … Additional patrol for all neighborhoods and retail areas.
  • Supporting our schools – the heart of our community … I’m a product of our Manhattan Beach Schools.
  • Maximizing the Public Art Trust Fund … Driving more upscale art installations into the community. Quality over quantity.
  • Supporting aggressive timelines to get things done.
  • Expanding collaborations with our beach city neighbors.
  • Supporting local businesses and local non-profits.
  • Adding more traffic calming measures in our neighborhoods.
  • Continuing and expanding our celebrations around patriotism and diversity.
  • Over communicating. Encouraging residents to visit our city website and channels.
  • Emphasizing our values as a community. We’re an inclusive community living in the best beach town in America.

I’m against wasting your tax dollars and distractions that don’t benefit our community.

I’m a Senior Executive in tourism and hospitality. (I’m not advocating for tour buses and over development.) But I do value our local businesses, the Manhattan Beach Chamber and Downtown Manhattan Beach Business and Professional Association. I want to thank and recognize the hospitality workers, business owners and leaders who provide unforgettable experiences in Manhattan Beach. … Next Week Part Two

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Lee Phillips M.D.

Why I Support Nathan Hochman for L.A. District Attorney: A Physician’s Perspective: as a physician, I am deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of our communities. The role of a District Attorney is pivotal in shaping our environment, influencing crime rates, public safety, and, ultimately, the health of our neighborhoods. With this in mind, I wholeheartedly support Nathan Hochman’s bid for L.A. District Attorney. Combating Violent Crime: I know that violence has a profound impact on public health – injuries, trauma, and the mental health repercussions that follow can affect entire communities. Hochman’s emphasis on transparency and community engagement. This trust is vital for fostering a cooperative environment where residents feel safe reporting crimes and engaging with law enforcement. A Focus on Victims’ Rights: When I practiced, I saw firsthand the impact of crime on individuals and families. Hochman prioritizes victims’ rights, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs met. This is essential for fostering trust in our justice system and providing security to those suffering. Public Safety as a Priority: Nathan Hochman’s approach to law enforcement focuses on a balanced strategy that promotes accountability and rehabilitation without compromising the safety of our communities. As we approach this crucial election, I urge my fellow Angelenos to consider the implications of our choice. Nathan Hochman represents a path toward a safer, healthier Los Angeles – where lives are saved and communities thrive. Let’s prioritize public safety, support victims, and combat the root causes of crime together. Let’s make our voices heard and ensure that Los Angeles remains safe for all its residents by voting for Nathan Hochman, District Attorney. https://nathanhochman.com

MB WEEKLY CRIME

The Manhattan Beach Police Department is investigating two construction site burglaries during the weekend of July 12-15. A construction site on Manhattan Beach Boulevard’s 1700 block was robbed that weekend. On Monday, July 15, workers returned to find a massive breach in the chain link fence and a missing toolbox. Northrop Grumman’s 1700 Rosecrans Avenue parking lot building site was broken into that weekend. The workers locked a storage chest inside a fence. On Monday, July 15, those workers returned to find the storage chest smashed into and tools stolen.

This month, MBPD officers used the victim’s “Find My iPhone” to apprehend two car burglary suspects. The woman parked her automobile near 13th Street and Manhattan Avenue on July 11. When she returned, the passenger window was broken, and a rucksack on the seat was taken. July 11 saw another El Porto parking lot car burglary. The owner locked the car but hid the keys on the roof racks. The victim returned to his car and was notified of credit card fraud. The victim learned that someone located his vehicle keys, entered his car, and stole many credit cards from his wallet. Again, MBPD advises beachgoers not to hide their keys in their automobiles. Thieves target beach-parked automobiles because people leave wallets and handbags there.

School teachers who knowingly refuse to participate in the pledge to our flag should not be a U.S. citizen let alone be in a classroom with our most vulnerable citizens. In fact, I don’t want people like that within 100 miles of young impressionable minds. By refusing to stand for the pledge they have signified they choose to not be a U.S. Citizen and have their citizens privileges canceled. Since they chose to not be a citizen they have no business here. Buy them a one way ticket to the country of their choice. Now I know that’s not going to happen but that’s what I think. Amen

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:

My wife and I have a daughter, Liz, who was raised in Manhattan Beach and is our world. At 28, she has built a successful career as a nurse. Her boyfriend, Owen, has a history of heavy cannabis use, and my wife suspects he still uses it when stressed. Additionally, he struggles with gambling. Despite our concerns, we allowed Owen to stay in our walk-in in-law apartment when he had nowhere else to go. My wife feels he is disrespectful, but I believe her dislike for him may cause her to overreact. This situation has left me at my wit’s end, and my wife is constantly stressed. While we understand that Liz is 28 and an adult, we worry about her future with Owen. We’ve tried to give him a chance, but his behavior and habits are concerning. We decided to seek MB Weekly reader’s advice on navigating this complex situation without alienating our daughter or compromising our peace.

EXCLUSIVE:
GROW CLOSES MANHATTAN BEACH MARKET AFTER 19 YEARS

Kathy and Barry Fisher with their first employee (center).

All good things must come to an end. It’s hard for us to close something that has been such a large part of our life and, to a large degree, our identity in the community. Even walking around town some people will say – “Oh it’s GROW” not Kathy and Barry. I liked hearing this. But now we are tired. We were tired when COVID-19 hit in March 2020 and over the past four ½ years we have been pushed both physically and emotionally. It’s funny, as COVID was a blessing and a curse for us. In Feb 2020 we decided to close GROW. We saw a drop in customer visits and felt we should make an exit. COVID hit and the community embraced us and there was a strong push to support local businesses. I am so proud of the job our team and our family did during those many months supporting the community and creating a safe place for customers to shop. Because of the amazing support in 2020 through 2021, we really believed there was a place among these giant box stores for a natural community grocer. As we pushed through 2022 we saw a slowing of business but this was expected as our community was fully opening and, let’s face it, people were tired of cooking. We were optimistic for 2023. 2023 started poorly and ended the same way. Our daughter started working for GROW in 2023 and was tasked with bringing in younger families to the shop. She did amazing outreach to all our schools and created automatic 5% donations to customer’s schools. It never caught hold. GROW’s customer base is mostly my age and older. This means kids are out of the house, which to a grocer means less stomachs to feed. Additionally, the diet changes as we get older – less red meat is eaten – historically a very strong part of our business. These changes reduced our store sales. In addition, as we lost labor, we did not fully rehire taking on more shifts to reduce costs. You know the adage: owners should be working ON the business not IN the business. Well, we overworked ourselves in the business.

The final straw for us was missing a planned vacation due to a team member quitting. We did not have the labor to fill the missing shifts. The following week after a 5 AM to 9 PM shift, I told Kathy I was done. Looking at me sure you see someone who looks incredibly youthful for his age, but even I have a limit. It was not just me. Kathy was tired as well. Since the business was losing money and its owners were burned out, the right thing was to close the shop. July 10th (after the 16 hour work day) we decided to close Sept 30th, by July 15th we decided to end our lease August 15th. Just rip the band aid off. Since we announced our closing, the outpouring from the community has been greatly appreciated. I have around 350 emails to reply to. From customers giving us their condolences and wishing us well to questions on what is next for the two of us. What has been very hard is seeing those customers who have become our friends. Dry eyes have been a problem for me since last Thursday. A customer came in the back entrance of the shop an hour after our email sharing the news – I saw her from the front of the shop and turned to Kathy and said this is going to be a hard one. Carol has shopped with us since we opened and exclusively for many years. Hugs, tears and stories. She brought up how she was not able to enjoy our Thanksgiving brined turkey as she was having issues with citrus (one of the ingredients) and how Kathy made her a special batch of brine without citrus. She then shared, “Where will I shop for my family?” We are fortunate to have touched a lot of lives in our community, and reading emails with stories about what GROW did for them and hearing them in the shop makes Kathy and I understand that we have impacted our community positively.

Two big questions:

  1. When do we close? By Aug 7th. If we sell out earlier we will close the shop earlier but we need to be out by Aug 7th so we can clear the shop of all our equipment.
  2. Where are we going to shop? Not sure – we would love your recommendations. Kathy has not shopped at another grocery store in 19 years. We have a request for you. We need your help moving through all our grocery items, so the closing is a lot less painful financially. Starting July 25th, grocery items are discounted 25% and wine 15%. Please come stock up and we look forward to seeing you in the shop.

Thank you, Kathy and Barry Fisher (Oh, it’s GROW)

A vast majority of MB Weekly readers are opposed to the teaching of gender identity in Manhattan Beach schools according to a recent MB Weekly reader poll. “I sent my children to school to be educated, not indoctrinated,” said Sally M., a Manhattan Beach resident and parent. The recent poll reveals a significant majority of the community’s disapproval of incorporating gender identity topics into the school curriculum. Many parents, like Sally, believe that education should focus on core academic subjects rather than delving into social issues. “It’s about preserving innocence and keeping our kids focused on learning essential skills,” she added.

This is the legacy of Jimmy Miller and the foundation in his name.” In addition to the Ocean Therapy sessions on the beach, the Foundation, which says its “the world leader in using Ocean Therapy to help those suffering from mental and physical illness, injury and disabilities,” hosts several events throughout the year.

Talk about insane! California school districts are no longer allowed to enforce parental notification policies, which are requirements that could potentially disclose a student’s gender identity to their parent. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law a bill that prohibits districts from enacting what’s been dubbed parental notification policies, requirements for school employees to disclose information related to a student’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression without the student’s consent.

There were far too few staff present, so the waiting is unnecessarily long. 3. They have removed the napkins from outside, so you have to ask for them. 4. Maybe it is because white men who aspire to theatrical/acting careers are in fact wimpy and predominate in the casting pool. Q: TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING CHARITY EVENT IN MANHATTAN BEACH AND HOW PEOPLE CAN GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT IT?
A: PS I Love You Foundation is hosting our 23rd Annual Day At The Beach Community Event; adopt a child for one day, scheduled for September 14th, 2024 in Manhattan Beach. This event pairs 300 youth ages 5-12 from LA County’s most vulnerable communities, with 300 caring adult mentors and their families for a memorable and heartfelt day filled with positive experiences, trust building, healthy relationships, and lots of LOVE!

Q: WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING YOUR CHARITY?
A: For me, the most challenging aspect of running a nonprofit besides aligning volunteer resources, is fundraising. Fundraising is essential to the sustainability of any nonprofit but it can become all-consuming. I enjoy effective fundraising but it also takes time and attention away from what I love to do most, which is training instructors and teaching students vital social, emotional and mental well-being skills through PS I Love You Foundation’s 12-week SEL programming.

Q: HOW DID YOU FIRST GET ASSOCIATED WITH THE PS I LOVE YOU FOUNDATION?
A: I started PS I Love You Foundation in 1998 to share the positive healing spirit of human connection. I was inspired by two amazing women, my mother and an older woman I befriended named Millie Taylor. My mom loved to love. When I was young, she always wrote the letters “PSILY” on my and my sisters’ paper lunch bags and it made me feel connected and cared for. She wrote it to remind us that she loves us and we never were alone. This small gesture was powerful and truly impacted how I felt about myself and the world around me no matter what tough times we were going through in our personal lives, or behind our home doors. Millie Taylor also inspired me to start PS I Love You because of her selfless and loving decisions. When Millie’s daughter and granddaughter went to jail indefinitely, Milie quit her job to care for her five great grandchildren ages 1, 3, 5, 10 and 12. She was selfless and willing to sacrifice so her grandchildren and great grandchildren would not be separated in foster care. I stepped in to help care for them and that is when I realized that if these two-women can do such grand things of love with their lives, what am I doing with mine? Hence, was the creation of PS I Love You Foundation. Today, PS I Love You develops and teaches social, emotional well-being programs with a vision that every child deserves the right to a healthy sense of self, if able to feel and give love freely, and truly believes they can accomplish great things. We train instructors to teach the critical life skills all youth need to help manage the stresses, challenges, choices, and emotions of adolescence and beyond.

Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
A: East Hartford, CT

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: Gemini

Could Costa Teachers Actually Disrespect Our Nation In A Board Meeting?

As we celebrate our American freedom and independence in the month of July, a MBUSD school board incident comes to mind. On February 28 of this year, I was distressed and troubled by two Costa teachers, Daniel C. and Maddie H., who refused to stand for the pledge of allegiance to our flag. I emailed Principal Gerger my concerns. An administrator responded stating… “Courts have long held that students, parents and staff enjoy First Amendment protections whether or not to participate or not in patriotic activities such as the Pledge of Allegiance.” No argument there. In fact, I served in the Navy in the Gulf of Tonkin to protect those rights. Both Daniel C. and Maddie H. seem to be held in regard by this Board. However, as a tax payers and funders of this District, we can also have an opinion about the message our kids are getting. Do we really want role models at Costa who disrespect our very nation?? When asked to meet with me, Daniel C. refused to respond and Maddie H. was ‘too busy’. Let the District know your thoughts at 310.318.7345

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Silvia G. (Manhattan Beach)

We invited an out-of-town couple to visit our house on Strand. Afterward, I discovered a pair of pink panties lying on the road in front of our mailbox. When I picked them up with a stick to carry to the trash, I realized they were a pair of clean pink panties I had misplaced. They must have stuck to the sheets I had placed on the bed immediately before our guests arrived. Now, I can’t stop wondering what this couple must have been thinking when they tossed the panties. This may not seem serious, but it has become a source of embarrassment for me every time I meet these folks. Should I explain the panty situation or let it go? I am torn between clarifying the misunderstanding and risking further awkwardness or hoping they’ve forgotten the incident entirely. In situations like this, it might be best to let it go and trust that our friendship is strong enough to withstand such an innocent mishap.
