PERSONAL ISSUES IN MANHATTAN BEACH:

** My boyfriend’s mom has dementia, and he asked me and my kids to move in with him, promising marriage in exchange for my quitting my job to take care of his mother. I immediately felt it was a disaster waiting to happen. Caring for someone with dementia is incredibly challenging, and doing so while raising two teenagers seemed like a terrible idea. I refused, fearing the emotional toll it would take on my family. He has since placed his mother in a nursing home, but our relationship has changed. His mom can be abusive, hitting and biting, which would have only worsened the situation. Living with her would have strained our relationship and caused undue stress on my children. My boyfriend treats me differently, and I struggle to open up to him. I’m sad and unsure of how to navigate this difficult situation. —- Rhonda T. (Manhattan Beach)

** Over-parenting in Manhattan Beach has reached levels of absurdity destined to raise a generation of snowflake brats wholly unequipped for the real world. Parents here coddle their children to such extremes that kids can’t experience a single disappointment without Mommy or Daddy swooping in to save the day. It’s as if adversity is now a dirty word, and instead, we’re molding a society where every child is told they’re a genius, regardless of effort or merit. Let’s be honest: this modern style of helicopter parenting is exhausting, not just for the adults but for the kids too. And worse yet, it’s not backed by anything beyond a misplaced sense of superiority. For millennia, children thrived by simply being part of larger social groups, learning from their elders and peers, and not from being micromanaged 24/7 by anxious parents and guardians. A day of benign neglect, where kids can figure things out independently, is much closer to how humans evolved. What’s following – emotionally pre-screened playgrounds? Over-parenting is not raising resilient children; it’s manufacturing fragile little adults incapable of handling life’s inevitable challenges. —- Darby Winston

** How do I politely tell my friends and family to leave their dogs at home? I love hosting at my house on the Strand, and though I don’t have a pet, I genuinely enjoy animals. When people ask to bring their dogs, I’m usually OK with it – my ground floor is linoleum, so that I can handle the inevitable sand and water. But last year, my niece and her husband arrived for the weekend with their huge, long-haired dog – without even asking! I figured I could manage, but when bedtime came, they let that dog sleep in the upstairs guest room bed! I was stunned. Who does that? It’s not that I dislike dogs, but come on – at least ask first, and keep them out of the bedrooms! My house isn’t a kennel, and I’m not here to pick dog hair off the sheets. It’s time to set boundaries, people: dogs belong at home. —- Dana B. (Manhattan Beach)

** Seventeen years ago, in El Porto, I experienced a mental breakdown that altered the course of my life. For three years, my husband stood by me. However, the medications prescribed to manage my condition caused me to gain over 100 pounds. Despite trying multiple diets, I have been unable to lose the weight. To reconnect with him, I once suggested that we hold each other and see where it might lead. His response was cruel: “I’m no longer attracted to you. You knew I wasn’t attracted to larger women when we married.” From that moment, my respect and love for him began to erode. Our relationship has since devolved into a hollow partnership. We now live on opposite ends of the house, occupying separate rooms and sharing nothing meaningful. When he enters my space, he does so without knocking, asserting that he does not need to do so in “his” house. I, however, always knock before entering his space, adhering to boundaries he doesn’t reciprocate. His arrogance and disregard for my feelings feel unbearable. Though we maintain the appearance of marriage, I no longer feel it. He calls me “baby,” but I’ve clarified that I want him to stop. Pretending hurts me, and I long to feel seen and respected again. —- Name withheld by request (Manhattan Beach)

** It’s infuriating to think that my daughter, whom we’ve raised with open communication, felt the need to hide an entire part of her life from us. She’s kept this Instagram account secret for three years – since she was a minor! Worse, I’m actively blocked from it. Not only does this feel like a betrayal of trust, but it raises questions about what content she’s posting and who’s viewing it. I understand she wants privacy and independence, but the deliberate act of blocking me is frustrating. I thought we had a stronger connection than that. It’s hard not to feel hurt and disappointed by the secrecy. Why did she think she couldn’t share this part of her life? This isn’t about invading her privacy; it’s about ensuring her safety, and I’m just stunned that I’m locked out of that. —- Name withheld by request (Manhattan Beach)

** I had a five-year relationship with a man who, despite our shared memories, broke my trust through infidelity. The wound is deep, yet I find myself caught between the ache of betrayal and the remnants of love that linger. I’m willing to forgive, maybe even to begin again. But my children – my anchors and my constant – disapprove vehemently. Their voices, filled with protectiveness, insist on an ultimatum that slices deeper than the initial heartbreak: reconnect with him and risk losing them. Their stance feels harsh, and my heart fractures further at the thought of choosing between potential happiness and the love of my children. The fear of being alone, the gnawing dread that I might not find love again, weighs heavily. Is it selfish to long for companionship when the cost might be their trust? Life feels like an unforgiving crossroads where each path holds an emptiness I’m not sure I can bear. —- Eleanor C. (Manhattan Beach)

** For thirty years, I’ve shared a friendship with a couple who live here in Manhattan Beach and, despite their functioning exterior, struggle with alcoholism. They work, socialize, manage a household, and meet their responsibilities. However, once or twice a month, they fall into heavy drinking, and I often find myself on the receiving end of an incoherent, rambling call from the wife. I suspect these binges happen more often, though, thankfully, not every incident leads to a late-night call. While I understand that I may be one of the few people who will listen, these calls have begun to wear on me emotionally. Each conversation feels like a heavy burden, with the same familiar, slurred grievances, leaving me feeling drained and conflicted. I want to support my friends, but I’m reaching a point where I may need to set boundaries for my well-being. —- Gwendolyn C. (Manhattan Beach)

HOW MANY CUPS OF COFFEE DO YOU DRINK A DAY:

** 2 cups every morning! —- Paul Wafer (Manhattan Beach)

** One gets the job done —- Larry Zimbalist (Chair of Measure Repair Local Schools)

** Just one cup —- Marvin Mack (Urban Plates)

** Zero —- Phil Cook (Financial Advisor Manhattan Beach)

** One —- Tracy Evans (Owner of Set The Table LA)

** Only about three per week and they are decaf. I just like the taste. Good Boy Bob! —- Joe Franklin (MB City Councilmember)

** Zero … I was at a New Year’s Eve party in 1965 and we were talking about how we were drinking way too much coffee, so four of us made a pact to never drink coffee again, and I have stayed true to that pledge. —- Russ Lesser (Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

** Zero —- Bob Holmes (Three Terms Manhattan Beach Councilman/Mayor & 55-year Manhattan Beach Resident)

** Just one. —- Charlotte Lesser (Neighborhood Watch)

** Although I have met a lot of people over coffee these days, I am trying to keep it to maybe a half a cup of coffee during this campaign cycle! —- Karen Komatinsky (City Council Candidate)

** I usually drink 2 cups of BLACK coffee per day. Coffee is one of the best antioxidants when drinking without sugar or cream. —- Peter Kim (Sloopy’s Beach Cafe)

** I love coffee and coffee is part of my daily rituals – so – with very few exceptions I drink 2 Americanos in the morning (6:30 am & around 10:30 am) and 2-3 expressos in the afternoon: one after lunch/one around 3 and the last one around 6 pm. I bought this phenomenal machine – the Breville Barista Express Expresso Machine – which grinds the beans right before brewing and there is nothing better. —- Lucia La Rosa (Community Activist)

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR FAVORITE BAGEL IN THE SOUTH BAY:

** Noahs —- Mark Burton (Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

** I am a big fan of avocado toast (from OffSet Coffee or Bluestone Lane) but I do love The Farmhouse bagel from Noah’s once in a while. —- Karen Komatinsky (City Council Candidate)

CRIME • CITY • POLITICS:

** As marijuana legalization sweeps the nation, doctors are now grappling with the fallout from a rapidly expanding $33 billion cannabis industry. This isn’t the mellow weed of Woodstock; today’s cannabis is supercharged, packing a punch that many users can’t handle. Tens of millions of Americans casually partake, either for medical reasons or just to unwind, and most don’t hit snags. But as the potency climbs and chronic use skyrockets, we’re seeing a surge in serious health issues that were barely on the radar a few years ago. The real kicker? Public health messaging is weak, state regulations are full of gaps, and federal roadblocks choke off vital research. Consumers and even doctors are left to guess the risks. The damage being done is far more profound than the feel-good headlines suggest, and it’s about time we address this escalating public health crisis head-on. —- Dr. William Harrell (Manhattan Beach)

** I’ve observed local City Council campaigns for over two decades, but I’ve never seen one run with the precision and tenacity of Joe Franklin’s re-election bid. Franklin’s campaign was nothing short of a masterclass in grassroots organizing, showing a relentless work ethic that paid off in a landslide victory. It felt like he was everywhere at once – meeting with residents, attending community events, and connecting personally with voters. This wasn’t the result of flashy ads or lofty promises but of genuine, sustained effort. He listened, engaged, and made himself accessible seven days a week. Joe Franklin’s campaign wasn’t just a success but a shining example of what dedication and hard work can achieve in local politics. His victory is a testament to the power of being genuinely present and involved in the community he serves. —- Otto V. (Manhattan Beach)

** In last week’s edition, you mentioned the importance of meeting attendance for City Council and I wholeheartedly agree with you. To be clear, I personally have been consistently attending bi-weekly Council meetings since back in February, 2024, and I am also thankful that the City meetings (including Commission meetings) are made available via Zoom and through Spectrum. It is so important for residents to have access to all parts of the City while recognizing that not every can or may not want to attend an actual meeting. I do enjoy the meetings as there are many nuances and the participants’ personalities often surface in meetings. I can only hope that over time others will attend and see how our local government works! —- Karen Komatinsky (Manhattan Beach)

** About the issue of increase cost of salaries and benefits. UC Berkeley Labor Center found that the increase in salary and benefits is tied to the unionization of public employees – which in Manhattan Beach happened long time ago and not under the watch of this City Council. So, what does Burton propose? Is he against the Unions now? or does he want fire someone? and who does he want to fire? For example, I SURELY do not want the city to fire anyone from MBPD or the MBFD… My point is complaining is easy and obvious – finding solutions is the hard part. Burton does not offer any solution. —- Lucia La Rosa (Manhattan Beach)

** On 10/31, around 9:30-10 pm, numerous streets near the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Gates through 3rd Street were vandalized by 4-5 teenagers with knives or box cutters. They slashed the tires of 4 cars on Gates and Herrin, then two tires on a Cybertruck, cut Halloween inflatables on 1700 block of 2nd, slashed the back two tires on a vehicle on 1700 block of 3rd, and then stole solar Halloween decorations and cut an inflatable ghost on 1600 block of 3rd. Numerous police reports have been filed, and we want anyone with similar vandalism to file a police report. They took another one this morning and are considering this one significant incident. If you were affected, please file a police report and contact me. Also, please contact me IF ANYONE HAS FOUND A CUT WHITE GHOST INFLATABLE on the Street. This may be the discarded ghost inflatable that was stolen on 3rd Street. If anyone in the area can look at their security footage to see if you can see these teenagers, we would love to send that footage to the police. At 9:40 pm, they were running east on 1700 block of 2nd Street. At 9:46 pm, they were headed west on 1600 block of 3rd Street. They are wearing? Skeleton-themed clothes and some masks. Thank you for your help in apprehending these culprits. —- Letitia L. (Manhattan Beach)

FISKER, OTHERS, MAY HAVE UNWITTINGLY HIRED NORTH KOREAN I.T. SPY:

In a shocking twist of international espionage, Fisker Inc., the Manhattan Beach-based electric vehicle (E.V.) manufacturer of the famous Ocean SUV, allegedly unwittingly hired a North Korean spy. Fisker is reported to be among several U.S. companies caught up in alleged illegal revenue generation efforts of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Automotive News reports that an I.T. contractor, hired remotely by Fisker in October 2021, had provided a false Arizona address, which investigators later traced to a woman named Christina Chapman. According to an indictment on Justice.gov in May, “the overseas IT workers associated with Chapman, many of whom were tied to North Korea, posed as U.S. citizens using the stolen, false, or borrowed identities of U.S. nationals, and applied for positions at U.S companies, causing the transmission of false documentation to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The overseas IT workers gained employment at U.S. companies, including at a top-five major television network, a Silicon Valley technology company, an aerospace manufacturer, an American car manufacturer, a luxury retail store, and a U.S.-hallmark media and entertainment company …” According to Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, “The charges in this case should be a wakeup call for American companies and government agencies that employ remote IT workers.” Fisker filed for bankruptcy in June of 2024.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
David Rodriguez (South Bay Cycle)

Q: HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED IN BIKES?
A: I first found bikes as a way to get away from home and explore the city with friends. Once I was let go from my job during the 2008 financial crisis, I spent my last check to buy a really nice road bike, my first “real” bike. That let me ride longer time and ended up finding the local LA Bike groups. Once I met up with several groups, I would end up riding every day for the next 3 years, sometimes coming home past midnight.

Q: DO YOU PERSONALLY OWN A BIKE?
A: I own a 2024 Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8.

Q: HOW DID YOU FIRST CONNECT WITH SOUTH BAY CYCLE?
A: I was asked to help work a couple of days when one of the managers was transitioning to another position, when I was asked if I wanted to fill the position, I took the role.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF RUNNING SOUTH BAY CYCLE POST-COVID?
A: The whole industry has taken a turn and slowed down a lot. We have been tight on popular bikes and now running short. And like every shop knows, finding a good service technician is hard, but we now have a second tech to get our Riders taken care of.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: Like many people, the John Wick series is sitting on the top of my list. But for many years it was Lord of the Rings.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP FOR BIKE RIDERS?
A: Do not use in ear headphones and looking into parked cars rearview and side mirrors. Seeing people shuffling around in their cars is a clear sign of potential danger and gives you enough time to react.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Paul Wafer (Manhattan Beach)

Dear Councilmembers, I was glad to see the following statement in the city council recap this week: Councilmember Napolitano and Councilmember Montgomery requested to agendize a discussion to direct staff to prepare a white paper providing facts regarding staff salaries in comparison to other cities. There are a couple of items that I would like to point out to you:

  1. Throughout my 4 part series on Manhattan Beach employees, I used the term compensation, not salaries. Compensation includes a number of other data points like overtime, one time pay, other compensation, and the cost of all the benefits, including pension contribution. I believe that by just looking at salaries, you will be missing important information that impacts the total cost of our city’s staff and I recommend that you look at the entire package. Additionally, if you just use salary in your next contract negotiations, you will be losing some leverage when negotiating a new contract.
  2. By having “staff” prepare the analysis, you are having “the fox watch the hen house”. It is a conflict of interest to have the staff prepare this information for you. In my analysis of the data I spent about 25 hours downloading the data for the following website: https://publicpay.ca.gov/Reports/Cities/City.aspx?entityid=209 and putting it into Excel spreadsheets. I have to admit that when I got my MBA in 1988, Excel did not exist and I had to use a slide ruler for financial analysis. My excel skills are only moderate, but I worked with many young analysts during my 20 years of consulting that probably could have put all of the data into a pivot table and done the same analysis in just a few hours. Better yet, there are new data programs that could probably spit this out even faster. The point is, rather than have staff do the analysis, you might want to consider using and outside accounting or consulting firm to do this for you. As long as you direct them on what data source to use and what cities to include in the analysis, it should not take that much time or cost to complete. Surely you must have an existing relationship with an accounting firm or consultant that do this for you very quickly and cost-effectively.

Finally, with Measure MMB passing, you have an opportunity to supercharge your Capital Budget Fund by doubling down on staff cost reductions at the same time. If you are really serious about your $200 million in capital improvements, this is the only way to get it accomplished. Respectfully, Paul Wafer

MB LEADERS COMMENT ON RECENT ELECTION:

Manhattan Beach 2024 City Council Candidates

** Congratulations to Joe Franklin, Nina Tarnay and Steve Charelian! I am wishing all three of you the very best! I also want to thank Karen Komatinsky, Joe Marcy and Brenda O’Leary for running. Running for office is an important public service. The most important election result for Manhattan Beach residents may be Nathan Hochman being elected as LA County District Attorney. Also, the appointment of our new City Manager, Ms. Talyn Mirzakhanian, was important for our new City Council and future City Councils. I think she will be an outstanding City Manager. —- Mark Burton (Former MB Mayor)

** I did not win the election. But running for City Council was a personal win. It challenged me, resulting in personal growth on many levels. I’d like to congratulate all the candidates on a race well run where everyone brought something to the table. I appreciate the grace shown to me by the other candidates, as well as the public and the press. Most of all, I am thankful for the ~4,000 people who had enough faith in me to vote for me to lead our community. I appreciate each and every one of you, and am so grateful for your support! —- Brenda O’Leary (Community Activist)

** It was an honor and a privilege to run for City Council. Thank you for sharing your passion, priorities and vision. Manhattan Beach is special for many reasons. It’s the people – our community – that makes it feel like home. Thank you for your support and kindness. We share a deep love for Manhattan Beach and together we’ll continue to do great things. Congratulations to Joe Franklin, Nina Tarnay and Steve Charelian. —- Joe Marcy (Community Activist)

** Running for City Council in our close-knit beach town of Manhattan Beach has been an eye-opening experience, showing me the importance of truly listening to and engaging with our residents and businesses. I learned that residents deeply care about our community and have a wide range of concerns, from enhancing public safety visibility and expediting street repairs and maintenance, to finding alternative parking solutions due to temporary closure of a downtown parking structure. Preserving our beach environment and maintaining and protecting open-space is vitally important to everyone as well. This campaign created opportunities for me to build relationships with neighbors, businesses and local organizations as I attended several of their meetings. Hearing firsthand about their issues and concerns has shown me the importance of local government transparency, communication, and collaboration. Ultimately, this campaign experience reinforced the power of grassroots efforts and the meaningful impact local government can have on residents’ day-to-day lives. Let’s make Manhattan Beach thrive together —- Steve Charelian (MB City Councilmember)

** I ran on promises to restore public safety, continue the results we have had with e-bike safety, continuing to improve our response to homelessness, and more. I learned that these were key issues concerning residents. I was the only candidate who openly supported and endorsed Nathan Hochman for Los Angeles County District Attorney. I learned many voters expressed concern when they learned some of the candidates endorsed Gascon in 2020 and 2024. I met Mr. Hochman three times in the past year and discussed with him the harmful effects of Gascon’s directives. Mr. Hochman promised to start prosecution of state misdemeanors the moment he takes office. He also supports us in utilizing the Homeless Court with Redondo Beach. I learned our residents are compassionate about the homeless who come into our City so I directed improvements in the City’s “Reach Manhattan Beach” app to make it easier to report encounters with homeless to get them needed services. Residents told me they saw improvements with e-bikes from the education and enhanced enforcement which I helped start in 2022 but wanted even more. That is ongoing. … —- Joe Franklin (MB City Councilmember)

I want to give a big shoutout to our Manhattan Beach police department. I’m currently house/dog-sitting on Rosecrans. At approximately 3:15 this morning, the two Frenchie pups woke me from a sound sleep, barking like crazy. A very drunk & possibly homeless man was trying to break into the residence. I called the cops & spent no more than 5 minutes with dispatchers. Four cars showed up immediately. He was then taken off to jail. It took a while for my heart to stop racing. THANKS, MB police. These two pups are heroes too.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Louise F. (Manhattan Beach)

George Gascón’s crushing defeat in his re-election bid, with only 38% of the vote as an incumbent, was no surprise. Significant rising crime rates marked his tenure and policies that left many Angelenos feeling horribly unsafe. But what truly baffles me is not the overwhelming rejection – it’s the 38% who voted for him. Who in their right mind would choose to re-elect a D.A. who repeatedly prioritized criminals over victims and seemed disconnected from the community’s concerns? I’d pay good money to sit down and talk with someone who supported him. Was it sheer lunacy to radical political ideology? A belief in his bizarre criminal justice reforms despite mounting evidence of their failures? Or perhaps a simple ignorance of the real-world consequences? Gascón’s defeat was inevitable, but the lingering question remains: Who are the voters standing by his side, and what do they think they saw that the majority, thank God, did not?

Unlike McDonald’s, Carl’s Jr., Wendy’s, Burger King, and the rest, it offers a simple menu, quality ingredients, and genuinely friendly service. SOUTH BAY VOTES “YES” TO TOUGHER CRIME LAWS – PROP 36 TRIUMPHS, HOCHMAN OUSTS GASCÓN:

In a decisive victory for law-and-order advocates, South Bay voters helped pass Prop 36, California’s latest tough-on-crime amendment, overturning Prop 47 from 2014. The measure, which received overwhelming support, reclassifies thefts under $950 and drug offenses as felonies, reversing the softer stance of Prop 47 that reduced these crimes to misdemeanors. This shift marks a public pushback against lenient crime policies in Los Angeles. The region also saw a significant political upset, as incumbent district attorney George Gascón, one of the original architects of Prop 47, lost his seat to Nathan Hochman (pictured), a candidate committed to tougher prosecution and community safety. “Thank God, the days of insanity are beginning to end!” Lawrence T., a longtime Manhattan Beach homeowner.

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
WTF? 13% of South Bay Residents Pay for Five or More Streaming Services

In a recent MB Weekly poll that left many readers scratching their heads, 13% of respondents reported paying for five or more streaming services in their households. With many options like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime, streaming seems to have become the entertainment equivalent of an all-you-can-eat buffet – but at what cost? The poll highlights a shifting trend among South Bay residents, reflecting the increasing fragmentation of digital entertainment. While some view this streaming overload as a necessity to keep up with the latest must-watch shows, others are shocked by the costs piling up each month. With an average subscription cost of around $10-20 per month per service, those with multiple subscriptions could be forking over $100 or more just to stay “in the know.”

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Nathalie Rosen

Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
A: I was born in New Haven, CT, where my father was a professor at Yale. We lived on campus until I was 5. You could say I had a very early Ivy League education!

Q: HOW AND WHEN DID YOU FIND YOUR WAY TO MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: My husband and I moved our family here in 2021 from Windsor Village in Los Angeles. After 20 years of hearing our friends and business partners, the Sabas, rave about Manhattan Beach, we figured it was time to see if it lived up to the hype. Spoiler alert: it does! Plus, after the pandemic, we wanted our kids to experience the joy of walking to school and living close to their friends, which they couldn’t do before.

Q: WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO GET ACTIVE IN THE SCHOOLS IN TOWN?
A: I’ve always supported the schools my kids attend, and John F. Kennedy’s words, “[o]ne person can make a difference, and everyone should try,” have always inspired me. After moving here, I was surprised to learn how inadequate state funding is for our schools. That’s why I’m so passionate about getting involved – helping to make things better not just for my own kids, but for all students in the district. Efforts like Measure RLS are especially important because they allow us to improve our school facilities and provide safe, modern learning environments, all without raising taxes. I am so grateful to live in a community that collectively values education and makes smart investments to ensure our bright future.

Q: IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING THE MANHATTAN BEACH SCHOOLS IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
A: Being one of the least funded school districts in the state will continue to cause funding problems for us. Thankfully, we have MBEF, which granted $7.4 million to our district last year towards education. I don’t think people realize how much our schools rely on the Ed Foundation. The state funding formula isn’t going to change. The expectation for communities to raise private dollars locally is now embedded in the system. So, the biggest challenge will be keeping the community as supportive and generous toward the schools as it has been for the past 40 years. But knowing how caring and involved this community is, I have no doubts we’ll rise to the occasion!

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: “Good Will Hunting.” And yes, I still have the biggest crush on Matt Damon – unapologetically.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: I’m a Virgo – detail-oriented and always ready with a plan (or two).

Q: WHO WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE DINNER WITH, GEORGE CLOONEY OR ELON MUSK?
A: Tough choice! Dinner with Clooney would be a delightful evening, no doubt. But ever since Elon Musk took on his Lex Luthor persona, I feel like I’d have to sit him down and talk him into using his billions for good … or at least more electric cars.

Manhattan Beach Officers Bring Clean Water And Hope To Africa:

In a heartwarming mission of goodwill, two Manhattan Beach police officers, Joe Udeoji and his colleague Steve Kitsios, are embarking on a transformative trip to Africa. Joe, a native of Nsude, Nigeria, and his friend will deliver essential food supplies and tackle a more significant challenge – clean water access. Their journey will provide 20 kg of rice to 100 villagers and install a vital water well for the community. Backed by The Peoples Naija Foundation, their initiative, the Nsude Water Project, aims to raise $25,000 to supply clean drinking water to over 20,000 residents across ten villages. With a plan to drill boreholes and create sustainable water infrastructure, the officers’ efforts promise to have a lasting impact. Supporters can contribute to this life-changing cause by visiting peoplesnaija.org to help transform lives in Nsude. Every donation will go directly to this critical project.

Downtown Manhattan Beach Farmers Market Temporarily Relocates To Civic Center:

In response to the demolition activities of Parking Lot 3, the Manhattan Beach City Council has approved a temporary relocation of the Downtown Manhattan Beach Farmers Market. “Due to the demolition of Parking Lot 3, beginning Tuesday, 10/29 the Farmers Market will temporarily relocate to Civic Center Parking Lot and Plaza, between the Police/Fire Facility and City Hall. This location is just north of the current market location on 13th Street, and has a beautiful, shaded seating area! All of the current vendors will be coming with us, but their size and setups may have changed, so take your time and meander around – maybe you’ll even find something new! The first day may have a few bumps, but we thank you for patience during this slight transition.” Safety and accessibility remain top priorities during the transition. MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Dr. Dale C. (Manhattan Beach)

I love and appreciate the MB Police Department, but my response to Sergeant Andy Abreu’s MB Weekly column is confusing and frustrating. His piece, which attempts to justify Manhattan Beach police officers working only three days a week, reads more like a wellness blog promoting work-life balance than a serious discussion about public safety. Yes, balance is essential – but last I checked, the primary mission of the Police Department is to protect and serve the residents of Manhattan Beach, a community for which officers are well compensated. In an age when brazen crime is on the rise, the priority should be the safety of the citizens, not officers’ extra downtime or quality family dinners. As a taxpayer, I find it troubling that wellness rhetoric seems to be taking precedence over the fundamental duty to keep our streets secure. Public safety is a full-time commitment, not a part-time pursuit focusing on wellness perks.

MB WEEKLY – READER COMMENT:

“MB Weekly has again demonstrated its commitment to fearless independence with a breathtaking exposé on Manhattan Beach’s obscene staff salaries. This story has shed light on a deeply troubling issue, uncovering the staggering compensation packages that betray the trust of hardworking taxpayers. The City should be ashamed of allowing such blatant misuse of public funds to go unchecked. MB Weekly’s extraordinary work exposes these fiscal issues, reminding us of journalism’s critical role in safeguarding our communities. Your dedication to truth-telling and transparency is inspiring and necessary in these times. I have endless appreciation for MB Weekly and your tenacity in highlighting issues that matter most. You are a true beacon of integrity in the media landscape, and your impact resonates far beyond the digital page and certainly lives up to your brilliant slogan – ‘once a week but never weakly.’” —- Sue B., Manhattan Beach

Stepping Up For Friendship – Skechers Pier To Pier Walk Powers Special Needs Programs:

Skechers CEO Michael Greenberg and Rabbi Yossi Mintz kicked off the 16th Annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk with a powerful message of inclusion and community support on Sunday. Joined by legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and fitness guru Brooke Burke, Greenberg welcomed a record-breaking 22,000 participants to the Manhattan Beach Pier. The event highlighted Jakob Dominguez, a pioneering Mira Costa High School’s inaugural Friendship Circle member in 2009. It opened with an inspiring rendition of the National Anthem by “America’s Got Talent” star Madison Taylor Baez. Since its inception, the walk has raised over $20 million, supporting programs that foster friendship and connection among special needs students. What began with 1,200 walkers and $220,000 has evolved into California’s most prominent special needs fundraiser, captivating supporters with celebrity appearances, live music, and a spirit of community unity that Greenberg reminded everyone remains at the event’s heart.
