MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
ALARMING SPIKE IN ROAD RAGE AMONG SOUTH BAY DRIVERS

A recent MB Weekly reader poll finds that 27% of respondents report witnessing incidents of road rage either extremely or very often in the South Bay area. MB Weekly, the largest digital publication in the South Bay, continues to monitor issues impacting the community. This latest poll points to a troubling increase in road rage, reflecting our streets’ escalating stress and frustration. As traffic congestion worsens, so does the risk of confrontations, putting drivers and pedestrians at risk. “Additionally, the whole e-bike mayhem phenomenon is making the problem significantly worse,” said an MB Beach community member who asked to be unnamed.

Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SUPERHERO?
A: Yes. Wonder Woman (obviously!). With her big heart, invisible plane, truth-telling lasso, gold cuffs, and matching tiara – she’s saving the world in style (a Malibu Dana tagline) while accessorizing like a boss. Iconic!

Q: DO YOUR PARENTS EVER EMBARRASS YOU?
A: Yes, absolutely. My dad thinks he’s a “professional dancer” (spoiler: he’s not). Whether it’s moonwalking to his own playlist or busting out moves at random, no one ever called him boring. 😉

Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DINOSAUR?
A: Yes. T. rex! They have those adorable little arms! How can you not love a dinosaur that’s both terrifying and adorable?

Q: DO YOU KNOW WHY THE SKY IS BLUE?
A: Yes. It’s all about perception, right? Personally, I think it’s because of all the blue butterflies fluttering up there, making ripples of hope and magic.

Q: HAVE YOU EVER LIED TO YOUR PARENTS?
A: If I said no, would that make me a liar times two. Lol!

Q: DO YOU LIKE ICE CREAM?
A: No. I prefer gelato, because butterflies are lactose intolerant. It’s science.

Q: DO YOU LIKE BROCCOLI?
A: Yes with bacon. Absolutely. Without bacon? Is that even a thing?

Q: HAVE YOU EVER WON A CONTEST?
A: Yes. Fun fact: I was a spelling bee champion growing up! Turns out I’m great at spelling, yoga, and fluttering.

Q: HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED ON A SPORTS TEAM?
A: No. There’s no “I” in team, but I made my mark as a competitive gymnast. Great for refining my high kicks.

Q: Bonus question: WHO WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE DINNER WITH – TAYLOR SWIFT OR ELON MUSK?
A: Obviously, Tay Tay! Her style is everything – the friendship bracelets, signature red lip, and turning every moment into a lyric from a hit song. Plus, real is rare, and I love her authenticity. Imagine the stories we’d share. Meow!

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW:
by Darby Winston
The Kettle at Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving dinner at The Kettle in Manhattan Beach is an absolute gem and an extraordinary value. The warm and inviting atmosphere made it feel like an actual family gathering, with attentive staff who brought the holiday spirit to life. The traditional Thanksgiving menu was flawlessly executed, from the tender turkey and perfectly seasoned stuffing to the creamy mashed potatoes and rich gravy. The homemade cranberry sauce and fresh, buttery rolls were delightful touches, and the pumpkin pie was a delicious finale. The portions were generous, leaving everyone satisfied yet eager for seconds. What’s truly remarkable is the affordable experience – you could easily spend more preparing the same meal at home. The Kettle strikes the perfect balance of quality, comfort, and value, making it a standout choice for a stress-free and memorable Thanksgiving. For a festive and fulfilling meal, The Kettle is a fantastic choice.

As Barak Obama said… “Elections have consequences.” And it couldn’t be more true today. A spear was driven into the heart of woke politics on November 5th. The Convict & the Hillbilly won a decisive landslide over open borders, restricted fossil fuel supplies, electric car mandates and toxic Marist ideology and gender transition promotion in our own schools. I was part of a passionate group of parents advocating tradition American family values to MBUSD for 3 years. We asked for the pornographic book, “Gender Queer” to be taken down from their website and stop the promotion of the book by a Costa English teacher. We were told we were book banners. We asked to be part of the E-equity, D-diversity, SJ-social justice & I-inclusion Committee. We were told to pound sand. We asked that the intrusive Panorama student surveys be “opt-in” rather than “opt-out”. More sand! When several residents, myself included, received a “Cease and Desist” letter from the MBUSD attorney, Dr Bowes and the Board in 2021 refused to acknowledge who and why the legal assault was triggered. Well, we finally won.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Heather D. (Hermosa Beach, Registered Nurse)

For months, telehealth company Hims & Hers has promoted the idea that obesity is a medical condition best treated with drugs like Ozempic, pushing for insurance coverage. Their ads reflect a growing narrative from the public health industry: obesity is a genetic disorder, mainly outside individual control. This perspective dismisses decades of behavioral science showing that overeating and under-exercising are primary contributors to weight gain. Instead, labeling such discussions as “fat-shaming” shifts focus from personal responsibility to systemic solutions. The insistence that obesity is solely genetic aligns with broader societal trends: medicalizing behavioral issues and concentrating authority in the hands of elites. By framing obesity as a condition requiring expensive interventions, the narrative transfers agency from individuals to technocratic systems. This approach avoids uncomfortable truths about lifestyle choices while profiting from the problem. If America hopes to reverse its obesity epidemic, leaders like RFK Jr. must challenge this paradigm, empowering individuals over pharmaceutical dependency.

South Hermosa Beach Hill: Hi neighbors, this is the first time something like this has happened to me, so I wanted to share it. I purchased my husband’s Christmas gift (a Japanese whiskey) online through BevMo because the stores around here did not have this specific whiskey. This service cost $20 for delivery, and they asked for a driver tip. I paid for a good tip and paid the delivery fee. I was handed an empty box instead of my order. I have contacted BevMo and the shipper company; they are “launching an investigation.” I have video evidence of this box being empty. Has anyone had this experience? Hopefully not; I am just warning you all that this is possible when you order through this service.

Manhattan Beach Crime Summary
November 21 to November 26, 2024

  • 612 CALLS FOR SERVICE
  • 17 ARRESTS
  • 12 TRAFFIC COLLISIONS
  • 35 CRIME REPORTS TAKEN

Community Police Academy, CPA, Registration open November 26

There were six vehicle burglaries this week …

  • 4 Catalytic Converter thefts
  • 2 vehicle burglaries: Equipment stolen from a truck bed & Burglary occurring in El Porto

Notable Events:
** On 11/21/24 at approximately 10:09 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop for vehicle code violations in the 1400 block of Rosecrans Avenue. Two male adults occupied the vehicle. The driver was on parole and the passenger had a misdemeanor warrant. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately $700 in stolen clothing (items had security sensors still attached to them), PCP, methamphetamine and crack cocaine. Both subjects were arrested for various charges.

** On 11/22/2024 at approximately 12:30 p.m., officers responded to the 4400 block of Highland Avenue regarding a residential burglary. The victim stated the suspect was in the garage putting on the victim’s clothes and throwing items around. Officers arrived and detained the suspect without incident. The suspect appeared to be either under the influence of drugs or having a mental health episode. The suspect was wearing the victim’s shoes and a bracelet they found in the garage. The suspect was transported for a mental health evaluation and a crime report was taken. The report will be submitted to the district attorney’s office for filing.

** On 11/26/24 at approximately 4:39 p.m., officers were dispatched to the El Porto parking lot to investigate two vehicle burglaries. One of the victims followed the suspect vehicle to the Manhattan Village Mall. An officer located the suspect vehicle exiting the mall at Village Drive and Rosecrans Avenue. When the suspect saw the officer’s emergency lights activate, the suspect fled from the officers, driving eastbound on Rosecrans Avenue. Due to the suspect vehicle’s erratic driving, coupled with the officer’s obtaining the suspect’s license plate, no vehicle pursuit was initiated. This investigation is still ongoing.

** On 11/27/24 at approximately 1:08 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop in the 1800 block of Rosecrans Avenue. Three subjects occupied the vehicle. The driver had a suspended license and the other two passengers did not possess valid licenses. The officer gained consent from the registered owner (passenger) of the vehicle and during their search, officers discovered a loaded 9mm firearm. All three occupants were arrested and transported to the MBPD jail for booking.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Mark Burton (Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

Retired MBPD Captain Tim Hageman was spot on in advocating for the 4/10 deployment schedule for MBPD patrol officers. It is a “force multiplier”, resulting in better deployment of our patrol officers. Also, instead of a minimum deployment of 4 patrol officers, MBPD should increase its minimum deployment to 6 patrol officers on certain days. If MBPD did both, we would see more regular patrols in Downtown MB, North MB, our MB Mall and, most importantly, in our neighborhoods. This increases the “presence” of patrol officers in the best way to deter and prevent crime. Quite simply, it would make us safer.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Tom Williams (Manhattan Beach)

A Call for Comprehensive Traffic Solutions on Valley Drive: My open letter to the Parking and Public Improvements Commission + City Council.

Hi – I am Tom Williams, and I live at 609 N Valley Dr in Manhattan Beach. I’d first like to express my appreciation for your consideration in improving the local traffic conditions at 6th and Valley. I watch the daily near misses, sometimes hits, and the complete disregard by drivers from my office on what I contemptuously call the PCH bypass. I’d also like to state that I do not support putting in a flashing stop sign at this time. There are many reasons why, but the first is that before a vote to consider what traffic calming measures should be undertaken, a traffic study needs to be conducted to determine current traffic patterns, and then once again, after any calming measures have been implemented, to test their effectiveness. Furthermore, I’d argue that a flashing stop sign does not solve our traffic problems. The current stop sign is well declared on both sides of the road, it’s been stripped (even a wider stripe), it’s written on the road, and it’s announced 150 feet or so before with signage. I’d also argue that most violations occur not from people unaware that a stop sign exists but from willful disregard of it. Valley Dr, between MB Blvd and 1st, is currently designed to promote bad behavior, which needs to change. I’ve spoken to over 20 families in the 42 homes that front Valley between MB Blvd and 1st, and one message has resonated very loud and clear: people are fed up with the speed and reckless driving. They are fed up with being unable to safely cross the street to the greenbelt. They are fed up with their cars getting hit. They are fed up with vehicles traveling more than 40 miles per hour down the street. They are fed up with drag racing between 6th and 1st. They are fed up with the lack of accountability. I will present a physically signed petition currently, 24 homes out of 42 on this stretch of road. There has yet to be a single family who has declined to sign. The petition formally requests the City to perform a traffic calming study before taking action and presenting all available options. I believe radical engineering concepts need to be considered to improve the conditions in Valley:

  • Reducing Valley/Ardmore to a single lane in both directions between MB Blvd and 1st and dedicating the right traffic lane for pedestrians, bike traffic, and emergency vehicles.
  • Making Valley/Ardmore bi-directional between MB Blvd and 1st. To match the traffic flow in both the Tree Section and HB to Herondo.
  • Add a crosswalk along the 6th on both Valley and Ardmore (And potentially other locations with known foot traffic). There are no crosswalks from MB Blvd to 1st (0.5 miles).

Fun fact:

  • Ardmore – MB Blvd to Rosecrans has eight crosswalks (1.3 miles)
  • Valley – MB Blvd to Rosecrans has eight crosswalks. (1.4 Miles) Emergency services friendly speed humps and other traffic calming infrastructure like chicanes.

There are knee-jerk emotions to speed humps, especially when it comes to emergency services, but this has now been well studied and can be engineered to both calm traffic and have minimal to no impact on response times. I have collected thousands of hours of video footage. I have also created hand-curated clips of some of the worst violators that I’d see with my own eyes. As of last week, I’ve invested over a hundred hours of my time and built a computer vision model that accurately picks out some of the worst offenders. To that end, I’d like to offer, instead of (or in addition to) a traditional traffic study, my footage and my time to work with the City’s traffic engineer to profile the vehicle data I am cataloging. I think that together, we’d come to a similar conclusion that most of these violations come from local traffic/commuter traffic. I know there is a stop sign very well, but I also know that it is merely a suggestion 99.98% of the time. I cannot begin to overstate just how bad the conditions are. It’s something that one has to consume in its totality to appreciate the situation’s perverseness. For example, here are data points from my review of the traffic patterns for only one day – 11/19/2024. If you are curious about what a video of over 400 cars running the stop sign looks like in a single day, and you have a large pot of coffee.

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
SHANT SAMUELIAN: I have lived in Manhattan Beach since 2013.
CHRIS LEE: I have lived in Manhattan Beach since 2008.

Q: EXPLAIN YOUR NEW ENTREPRENEURIAL ADVENTURE TO OUR READERS?
A: I’m thrilled to introduce MyReaa, an AI-driven real estate platform designed to transform property analysis. My co-founder and I both grew up in Manhattan Beach, attended Manhattan Beach Middle School (MBMS) and Mira Costa High School, and later studied at USC. Our diverse backgrounds – my Armenian heritage and my co-founder’s Korean roots – have greatly influenced our entrepreneurial journey, shaping our approach to business and community.

At MyReaa, our mission is to empower real estate professionals to make faster, more informed decisions. Our first product is an AI-powered chat feature that serves as a personal real estate analyst. It provides quick answers, insightful recommendations, and helps users navigate complex topics like zoning laws, California housing regulations, market trends, and much more. And the best part? It’s completely FREE! You can try MyReaa’s AI Chat today on our website: myreaa.com.

We are also developing an advanced AI-powered Property Proforma Generator that will allow users to generate detailed property proformas in under 60 seconds. This powerful tool will combine essential data like zoning laws, market trends, building codes, underwriting criteria, and comparable sales/rents to provide a comprehensive analysis of a property’s potential. Based on these proforma numbers, the platform will automatically generate Offering Memorandums (OMs), assisting with decision-making and presentations. We’re eager to launch this soon and provide a powerful, AI-driven solution that enables real estate professionals to quickly and accurately assess investment opportunities with ease.

We’re truly excited about the future of MyReaa and our commitment to equipping real estate professionals with the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving market.

It’s especially beneficial for those who require fast, accurate financial projections and zoning insights. By simplifying complex analyses, MyReaa empowers users to make informed decisions quickly, enhancing their productivity and competitive edge in a dynamic market.

Q: IS RUNNING A BUSINESS MORE COMPLICATED THAN YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE?
A: Absolutely, running a business is more complicated than we expected; in many ways we didn’t anticipate. We thought the focus would primarily be on the core business activities, but instead, much of our time goes into managing staff, dealing with legal and paperwork, and handling marketing efforts. These are critical but often unexpected parts of the journey. If we had to sum it up, starting a business is like chewing glass. My co-founder and I work 100-hour weeks, powered by a steady stream of Red Bull and coffee, but we’ve found a rhythm and actually enjoy the process. Working well together makes the challenges easier to tackle and the wins even more rewarding.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Russ Lesser (Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

I was elected to the Manhattan Beach City Council in 1978. The town has changed a lot since then. Back then we were shocked that someone had paid $100,000 for a house on the Strand. We said, “If this continues no one will be able to afford to live here.” Last week I attended a City Council meeting because a discussion of the Neighborhood Watch program was on the agenda. My wife Charlotte founded the program in 1980 and has been the director for 44 years and I wanted to be there to support her. The program began with a fifth grade boy from Meadows leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. He did it in the way I learned in Kindergarten at Grandview in 1945. “Please stand. Place your right hand over your heart. Ready, Begin.” Then 5 second grade girls received awards from the fire department for their project on home fire safety. Unbelievably cute. Then the board members of the Hometown Fair were recognized for the great job they did. Then the council went on with their business in a very professional way, polite and respectful of each other’s thoughts and ideas. Wow, how refreshing. Then I attended the Veteran’s Day celebration on 11 11 at 11:11 in the morning. The police department raised the flag. The middle school chorus sang the National Anthem. Boy Scout troop members led us in the Pledge and two gave short speeches. Bob Holmes, former mayor and Army Captain who served in Vietnam gave a great talk. Our Mayor Amy Howorth ran the meeting, did a great job, and there were many in attendance. After these two events, I realized that while our town has changed a lot in the past fifty years, much has stayed the same. We are still a “small town” with small town values. Neighbors are friends. We support each other. We support our schools. We support charities. Our public safety departments do a great job. Our parks are beautiful. All of us are very lucky to live here.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Tim Hageman (Retired Captain, MBPD)

While I understand why some officers prefer the 3/12.5 schedule, I disagree with Sergeant Abreu’s assertion that it helps the MBPD better meet the community’s needs. Having served in law enforcement for 33 years (30 with the MBPD – nine as a captain), I advocate for the 4/10 schedule. Shifts for the 3/12.5 schedule are 6:00 am to 6:30 pm and 6:00 pm to 6:30 am. An example of shifts for the 4/10 schedule is 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, 3:00 pm to 1:00 am, and 10:00 pm to 8:00 am. The overlapping shifts allow for targeted patrol efforts during critical times, which can enhance the presence and effectiveness of patrols, improve community interaction through foot beats, and potentially deter crime. Having managed both schedules, along with my knowledge and experience, I believe the benefits of the 4/10 schedule better serve and meet the community’s needs. At the same time, achieve a better work-life balance.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Ed Kaminsky (Prominent South Bay Realtor)

Interesting comment [MSNBC host Jen Psaki claimed during an interview that transgender individuals in sports against girls was not an “issue” while later admitting that it does happen and claiming that there is no “threat to safety or fairness”]. I have zero issues with what people want to claim they are; it’s their decision. However, after working with pro athletes for almost 30 years, I can tell you that when you meet some, some barely look human. They are authentic muscle, speed, strength, and fierceness specimens. I wouldn’t want to be hit by any of them; I think I would break into a hundred pieces. I can’t imagine putting any of them onto a field with women, no matter how strong they are. Her comment seems borderline insane to me that there is no threat to safety. I suggest this reporter step onto a football field once and test that theory. Good luck, and be sure to have a Coroner nearby.

MBW CRIME

Manhattan Beach Crime Summary
November 14 to November 20, 2024

  • 720 CALLS FOR SERVICE
  • 8 ARRESTS
  • 16 TRAFFIC COLLISIONS
  • 33 CRIME REPORTS TAKEN

Notable Events:
** On 11/15/24 at approximately 3:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to a male waving a knife in the parking lot of the Hangar Inn. Officers arrived on the scene and were met with conflicting stories from witnesses but eventually detained three subjects. It was determined that a road rage incident led to a confrontation in which a knife was possibly brandished by one subject leading the other to brandish a large kitchen knife. No one was injured and there were no independent witnesses that could substantiate what truly occurred. A crime report was taken and MBPD Detectives are following up on the case.

** On 11/17/2024 at approximately 3:37 p.m., officers were dispatched to a call of a parked vehicle found with apparent bullet holes in the 500 block of Meadows Avenue. Officers arrived and confirmed three apparent bullet holes in a parked vehicle. The owner of the vehicle verified it was parked at the location on 11/15/2024 and was found before the call for service with the newly inflicted damage. The victim’s vehicle was unoccupied at the time and no injuries or other property damage were reported. The immediate area was canvassed and surveillance video was obtained.

** On 11/18/24 at approximately 5:31 a.m., officers were dispatched to the south side of the 1700 block of Rosecrans Avenue regarding a commercial burglary that occurred overnight at a construction site. Officers determined that the suspect(s) broke a padlock to a fenced-in area and stole tools.

** On 11/20/24 at approximately 9:28 p.m., officers responded to the 1500 block of 8th Street regarding a residential burglary. The residents returned home to find the upstairs bedrooms ransacked. The timeframe was between 4:15 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The suspect(s) point of entry was a second-story door. No suspect information is available and detectives are looking for anyone who lives in the area to review their surveillance video. The loss at this time is three $1,000 gift cards.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Mark Burton (Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

MB Weekly’s “Ask the Mayor” column was an essential and fun public service. As residents, we got to know and learn about our Mayor’s views regarding important city matters. I sincerely hope Mayor Howorth reconsiders her position and agrees to communicate with our residents by participating in “Ask the Mayor.” As our City’s leader, I think it may be incumbent on her.

MB WEEKLY – End Notes:

Last week, our new Mayor commented about a recent MB Weekly article on her Facebook page. She criticized MB Weekly for “shaming” and “bullying.” Our story, which seemingly upset the Mayor, is accurate. We had written to the Mayor three separate times to enquire whether or not she would like to continue the tradition of the three previous Mayors by doing a question-and-answer column for MB Weekly. Instead of declining, the Mayor did not respond. MB Weekly is unclear as to how this could be classified as “shaming” or “bullying.” The Mayor is, of course, entitled to her feelings about MB Weekly, but because someone disagrees with something, it is not necessarily “bullying” or “shaming.” We were hoping the Mayor would use the “Ask the Mayor” column as a platform to reach the large MB Weekly audience, and the invitation remains open. As for the upcoming “Coffees with the Mayor,” we would happily promote them as we have done with previous mayors. We wish the new Mayor only good things in her new role.

MAYOR HOWORTH SNUBS MB WEEKLY; BREAKS TRADITION OF “ASK THE MAYOR” COLUMN:

In a surprising break from precedent, Mayor Amy Howorth has declined to participate in MB Weekly’s longstanding “Ask the Mayor” column, a tradition upheld by her three (3) immediate predecessors: Steve Napolitano, Richard Montgomery, and Joe Franklin. The popular column has provided Manhattan Beach residents a direct line to their elected leaders, fostering transparency and dialogue on critical local issues. MB Weekly editors expressed disappointment over the Mayor’s lack of engagement. “We are disappointed that the Mayor not only chose not to participate but has also opted not to respond to our requests,” they stated. “As the largest digital publication in the South Bay, we hoped she would see this, as the other mayors did, as an opportunity to connect with the public and offer transparency.” MB Weekly, known for its broad reach and community-focused content, has vowed to keep the offer open, inviting Mayor Howorth to reconsider her decision. The move has sparked conversation among residents who valued the column as a unique opportunity to hear directly from their elected leader on pressing community issues. “I am quite disappointed in the Mayor’s decision,” said a former mayor of Manhattan Beach who asked not to be named.

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
Spin Cycle Supreme – Only 2% of MB Weekly Readers Go Old-School with Hand-Washing

In a surprising revelation from the latest MB Weekly reader poll, just 2% of readers say they wash all their clothes by hand, embracing a method that feels almost vintage in today’s appliance-heavy households. The remaining 98% rely on washing machines, which have become indispensable across the U.S. for their speed and convenience. Those who still hand-wash often cite reasons like garment preservation, water conservation, or personal preference, but they’re a minority. For most, the automatic spin cycle has transformed laundry from a chore to a background task, keeping hand-washing a specialty rather than a standard.

New DA Vows To Dismantle Gascón’s “Failed Social Experiment” In L.A. County:

In a decisive victory, newly elected Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman is set to roll back the controversial progressive policies of his predecessor, George Gascón. Hochman, a seasoned federal prosecutor, promises a shift toward a “hard middle” approach, emphasizing fairness and public safety. Hochman’s first actions in office will include overturning Gascón’s sweeping directives, such as prohibiting juvenile offenders from being tried as adults, eliminating sentencing enhancements, and rejecting the use of cash bail for nonviolent felonies. While Hochman respects some of Gascón’s reform intentions, he believes they were applied too broadly, compromising justice and community safety. The election results reflect a broader national trend against extreme progressive policies in criminal justice, even in typically liberal regions. Despite Kamala Harris’s commanding lead in the county’s presidential vote, Hochman’s win underscores a clear mandate for change and a demand for a balanced, pragmatic approach to law enforcement.

New Outdoor Gym Brings National Fitness Court To Manhattan Beach’s Polliwog Park:

This week, Manhattan Beach unveiled its revamped National Fitness Court at Polliwog Park, marking a significant upgrade to the city’s beloved outdoor gym. The renovation project, which kicked off in July and was completed by September, features a state-of-the-art seven-station system that offers a full-body workout in just seven minutes. Funded partly by a $30,000 grant from the National Fitness Campaign, the new court promotes exercise without weights or machines, relying instead on body-weight training. The National Fitness Campaign, founded in 1979, aims to promote outdoor fitness by partnering with local communities. The upgraded facility replaces the original fitness station installed in 2008, offering a modern, inclusive space for residents of all ages and fitness levels to get active.

ASK MR. MB WEEKLY

Direct Answers To YOUR Questions

DEAR MR. MB WEEKLY: SINCE YOU BEGAN, WHAT STORY HAS GOTTEN THE MOST RESPONSE FROM READERS?

A: In the last two and a half years, many stories have captured the attention of our readers, but one series stands out for generating the most response by far. It was our in-depth investigation by Paul Wafer into the exorbitant salaries paid to Manhattan Beach government employees – a topic that struck a nerve across the community. Countless readers expressed gratitude for shedding light on what they perceived as a blatant misuse of taxpayer money. The response was overwhelming, with letters and emails pouring in from every corner of the city, including from four former mayors of Manhattan Beach. Each confessed that even they were shocked by the numbers in the articles. What made this story resonate was the sense of utter surprise it sparked among residents who believed in the efficient, responsible use of public funds. It wasn’t just the eye-popping figures that drew attention but also the revelation of a culture of excessive spending hidden in plain sight. Our readers proved that the community will rally behind the truth, demanding better from their elected officials when it comes to transparency and accountability. This series served as a potent reminder that local publications still hold the power to expose, inform, and inspire change.

Hatred has no place in our community. This morning, we found this sticker on the stop sign at the corner of Gould and Valley. I am deeply disturbed; as someone who is Jewish (and anyone else who shares that faith), public displays like this one reminds me of 1930s Germany. To the individual(s) who decided to post their ignorance illegally, take the time to study history before mindlessly airing your hatred.

Warning: Disgusting Incident at the car wash. Be Vigilant. I want to warn everyone about a disturbing experience I had recently. While vacuuming my car at the Shell station on Aviation and Artesia, I turned around and noticed a man watching me. And to my horror, he had his shorts down and was exposing himself in a very inappropriate way. He was driving a gray Kia, and I got his license plate number. 9HBJ139 The manager at the Shell station was accommodating. She reviewed the footage to capture the exact moment and pulled the license plate number to help identify this individual. If you know this person or have seen anything similar, please contact the Redondo Police Department. Let’s keep our community safe and make sure this kind of behavior is reported. Stay vigilant, everyone.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Pamela H (Manhattan Beach)

I’ve had enough of the grotesque rudeness of DoorDash drivers, and I’m not alone – at least six of my friends, all restaurant owners, share the same horror stories. These drivers, who should be professional couriers, have the manners of anthropoid apes. Restaurant staff are treated with absolute disdain. Imagine working hard to prepare food, only for a driver to shove their phone in your face without so much as a word. It’s as if they’ve forgotten that basic human decency even exists. It’s an epidemic of rude behavior that goes unchecked, leaving restaurant owners infuriated and contemplating leaving the platform. These drivers walk in, their faces glued to their phones, too self-absorbed to offer a simple “hello” or “thank you.” Instead, it’s a phone in the face, then out the door with an attitude of entitlement. DoorDash must take responsibility and set higher standards, or they’ll lose many restaurant partners because their staff is disrespected. Enough is enough.

Having known nothing about the salaries of Manhattan Beach city workers, I must offer extraordinary praise to MB Weekly for shedding light on this vital issue. Shame on the City Council and candidates for sidestepping the topic. MB Weekly, your journalism is a beacon of accountability in our complacent community.
