GAVIN NEWSOM SIGNS LAW OVERHAULING LOCAL ZONING TO BUILD MORE HOUSING:
** MARK BURTON (Former MB Mayor): Newsom’s signing of SB 79 is just such a tragedy. Just imagine a large apartment building towering over your single family homes in your neighborhood. Your quality of life will be forever ruined, not to mention your home’s property value plummeting.
** BOB HOLMES (Former MB Mayor): Elections have consequences. California is a one party state. One party controls the State House and has supermajorities in both the Assembly and State Senate. They have repeatedly passed legislation eviscerating local control. Look at the disgusting HighRose apartment project in Manhattan Beach as a prime example. If you think Sacramento knows what is best for local cities, then you should be happy. If you believe local elected officials are more accountable and understand local needs better, then act in next year’s elections and return some balance to Sacramento politics. Skip party labels and vote for candidates who reflect your values.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO THE SOUTH BAY REAL ESTATE SCENE?
Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers in late August paid $25 million for the Manhattan Beach home of retired five-time Grand Slam singles champion Maria Sharapova. The modern three-story house features five bedrooms, a two-lane bowling alley and a great room that opens to the pool’s edge. Doncic, the 26-year-old Slovenian basketball player who signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension with the Lakers in August, acquired the property through his business manager, Lara Beth Seager, according to records viewed at PropertyShark.com and confirmed by the Southern California News Group.
** ANDY WEIR (REALTOR): I do not believe it means much of anything. It was a big number (and there were at least 2 other offers) for this beautiful, custom, KAA-designed house between two sports stars. This is nothing new. Just makes for great headlines. We have had celebrities and professional athletes/coaches buying and selling property in MB and HB for a very long time.

1. ** Thank you, Paul Beswick, for your meaningful column in support of Fred Taylor and Charlie Kirk. —- Liz S.
2. ** It’s fascinating how some panic over an inanimate object (bullet on campus) but have no problem with violent criminals who are caught and released. I must be missing something. —- Name Withheld by Request
3. ** WTF is wrong with parents who let their brat kids scream in a restaurant? It’s not a playground, it’s a dining space. Other people are paying for a meal, not a meltdown. Take them outside, calm them down, and show some basic respect for everyone else’s experience. BTW, do the world another favor and leave your putrid dog at home. —- Devin D.
4. ** Ash, the manager at Tin Roof, is a winner. —- Suzie T.
5. ** MB WEEKLY – READER QUESTION: Does the military need stricter standards for grooming and fitness, as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said last week? Send your reply to: MBWeekly@TimeWire.net
6. ** The problem in politics is that everyone wants to be liked, rather than doing what is right. —- Name Withheld by Request
7. ** The Chevron Refinery is a ticking time bomb for MB neighbors in El Porto and along Rosecrans. Explosions happen – it’s not “if,” it’s “when.” Those massive oil tanks should NOT sit beside homes. A single catastrophic fire could have deadly consequences. Move them. —- Eli T.
8. ** Richard Maynard of Manhattan Beach, age 90, proved it at the MB 10K – finishing the race in an impressive 1:36:55.98. A remarkable reminder that determination knows no age limit. —- Lance H.
9. ** Another fantastic Hometown Fair 10K run. Thank you, Taylor Franklin, for running it together. Thank you to all the HTF 10K organizers and volunteers. When someone asks what makes MB so special, this is why! —- Joe Franklin, Manhattan Beach
10. ** If the cat is away, guess what the mice will do. This pay travesty should have been stopped long ago. Bob Holmes is absolutely correct in saying that PERS is a very generous benefit that few, if any, in the private sector ever see. PERS alone is costing MB residents a significant amount. Hmm, maybe that’s why the Fire Department sent me a bill for over $200 for driving 10 or so blocks to respond to a false fire alarm. —- Phil Cook, Manhattan Beach
11. ** Ranked “one of the most influential business books of the last decade” —- www.BrokenWindowsBook.com
12. ** Waffles are just pancakes with abs. —- Darci H.
13. ** Gelato and Angels, located at 308 Manhattan Beach Blvd, is now out of business after 12 years. Boo! —- Kimberly Tomkins, El Segundo
14. ** This is the 6th year of VET FEST, put on by the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club. Saturday, November 8, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. Free for Veterans (Spouse/Sig Other $30.00). At our next meeting (October 21), Tim Hageman will tell us all about it, as well as share his interview podcast, “Behind the Line.” https://events.humanitix.com/vetfest-2025
15. ** I found it very offensive to be approached by an aggressive man on Costco’s property this morning, trying to bully customers into signing a voter suppression petition – totally inappropriate behavior. I immediately notified Costco management – no one should be harassed while shopping. Absolutely unacceptable. —- Francis C.
16. ** Fire after fire, L.A. County keeps promising change – but nothing changes. A 2018 report predicted the failures seen again in January’s Palisades and Altadena firestorms. It’s the same old story: no accountability, no firings, no investigations – government failure on repeat. EVER wonder why nothing improves? Because no one has ever been held responsible. Ever! —- Thomas L.
17. ** Manhattan Beach is first and foremost a community of residential neighborhoods. Our City Council must go above and beyond to protect and preserve that residential character – it’s the heart and soul of what makes our community special. Growth and change are inevitable, but our neighborhoods must always come first. —- Name Withheld by Request
18. ** As a Democrat, I must politely say that U.S. Rep. Katie Porter appears both unattractive and unwell. —- Suzanne D.
19. ** The Torrance Farmers’ Market marked its 40th anniversary on October 14 with a special ceremony, cake-cutting, and remarks from Mayor George Chen and city leaders. For four decades, this beloved market has connected residents with farm-fresh produce, supported local growers, and promoted healthy, sustainable living. —- Editor’s Note
20. ** Your car keys have actually travelled a longer distance than your car. —- Tate O.
21. ** $120,000 a year… for a motel bed?!? Only in Los Angeles could government “solutions” look this absurd. That’s what city leaders are shelling out to house the homeless – per person. Bureaucracy writes blank checks, taxpayers foot the bill, and accountability is nowhere to be found. Welcome to Motel Mismanagement, L.A. edition. —- Dr. J.T.
