“Criminal” – Manhattan Beach Restaurateur Slams Poor Fire Communication:
Manhattan Beach restaurant mogul Michael Zislis is fuming over what he calls “criminal” communication failures during last week’s massive Chevron refinery fire in El Segundo. “I spent the time to find out how to sign up for emergency [alerts]. No contact at all – and I live across the street!!!” Zislis told MB Weekly. The explosion and towering blaze at the 114-year-old refinery rattled homes miles away, yet many nearby residents say they received no alerts, texts, or calls as the fire burned for hours. Zislis, known for Shade Hotel and several landmark eateries, says communications systems failed in their basic duty to warn and protect the community. City officials have promised to review emergency notification systems in the wake of the backlash. But for Zislis and other residents, the damage to public trust is already done.

MB WEEKLY EXCLUSIVE VIDEO:
An exclusive MB Weekly video with Paul Wafer.
I read with interest Mr. Holmes’ commentary regarding Mark Burton in last week’s edition of MB Weekly. I thought it would make sense to look at the data after Burton’s defeat to see the objective data of the terms when Mr. Holmes’ preferred candidates, Montgomery and Napolitano, were in office. Over the last 8 years there has been a total of 52 new full-time positions, salaries have gone up $26,531924.00 or 57% and the city’s total expenses have gone up $60,134,472 or 45%. I don’t hear him complaining about any of this or the enormous increase in pension obligations that are not part of these numbers. —- Paul Wafer

Vinny Fazzino
(Owner/Founder Bella Builders)
LEGACY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
Q: AS THE SON OF AN ITALIAN IMMIGRANT, YOU LEARNED THE VALUE OF HARD WORK EARLY ON. HOW HAS THAT PERSONAL HERITAGE SHAPED THE WAY YOU APPROACH CRAFTSMANSHIP, CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS, AND LEADERSHIP IN BELLA BUILDERS?
A: My family’s immigrant journey from Melilli, Sicily, instilled in me the unwavering principles of hard work and dedication taught by my father, John. This heritage is the blueprint for Bella Builders, shaping my leadership to focus on meticulous craftsmanship and unwavering integrity in every project. Just as my father poured his heart into his trade, I pour mine into building honest client relationships and inspiring a team that takes genuine pride in delivering exceptional quality. This legacy of perseverance is the very foundation of our company’s reputation and its future.
EVOLUTION OF CONSTRUCTION
Q: OVER YOUR 36 YEARS AND 10,000 PROJECTS, WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHANGES YOU’VE WITNESSED IN CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN – AND HOW HAVE YOU KEPT BELLA BUILDERS AHEAD OF THE CURVE?
A: Having witnessed the construction industry’s evolution over 36 years, from manual blueprints to digital models, it’s clear the biggest shifts have been in technology, materials, and sustainability. We’ve gone from a paper-based industry to one that utilizes Building Information Modeling (BIM) for precise planning and robotics to enhance safety and efficiency on job sites. While materials like steel and concrete remain staples, the industry now has innovative options such as self-healing concrete, cross-laminated timber, and recycled steel, all of which reduce environmental impact. At Bella Builders, we stay ahead by adopting these technologies and prioritizing sustainable building design. This means we integrate passive design principles, such as optimal building orientation and natural ventilation, and utilize materials that minimize waste and energy consumption. Our approach isn’t just about constructing buildings; it’s about building for the environment, ensuring our projects are designed for a sustainable, resilient future.

SIGNATURE PROJECTS
Q: OF THE MANY CUSTOM HOMES, ADUS, AND LUXURY REMODELS YOU’VE BUILT, IS THERE ONE PROJECT THAT STANDS OUT AS THE MOST PERSONALLY MEANINGFUL OR TECHNICALLY CHALLENGING-AND WHY?
A: At Bella Builders, we don’t believe in singling out one project as the “best,” as we take pride in the craftsmanship and dedication poured into every custom home, ADU, and luxury remodel. Our true measure of success isn’t just a flawless finish, but the safety and well-being of our team. We believe that every employee should go home to their family each night. One project that does stand out for its technical difficulty and safety record was the decommissioning of the Harvey Aluminum Plant. This massive undertaking involved the removal of over 4 million pounds of asbestos, requiring more than 45,000 man-hours. Our crews worked in Haz Mat suits on beams at heights of up to 125 feet, and despite the inherent dangers, we completed the project without any major injuries. This achievement proves even the most difficult projects can be done with precision.
BUILDING COMMUNITIES
Q: BEYOND BRICKS AND MORTAR, CONSTRUCTION OFTEN SHAPES COMMUNITIES. HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR WORK AT BELLA BUILDERS INFLUENCING THE CHARACTER AND FUTURE OF LOS ANGELES NEIGHBORHOODS?
A: Beyond brick and mortar, Bella Builders is shaping the character and future of Los Angeles by thoughtfully integrating sustainability, density, and diversity into every project. We recognize that LA is an incredibly diverse city, which is why our developments include a mix of unit types to ensure housing remains accessible and stable for people across all income levels. Our commitment to sustainability means using cutting-edge design and materials to reduce environmental impact and build lasting, resilient structures. Finally, we approach increased density not as a simple numbers game, but through community-sensitive development and responsible infill that respects existing neighborhoods.
ADVICE TO THE NEXT GENERATION
Q: HAVING EMPLOYED AND MENTORED HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG BUILDERS AND DESIGNERS HOPING TO CREATE NOT JUST STRUCTURES, BUT LASTING REPUTATIONS IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY?
A: In the construction business, your reputation and your word are the bedrock of success, far outweighing any contract. A solid reputation for quality work, reliability, and ethical conduct is what opens the door to new projects and earns the trust of both clients and the community. When you give your word, it must be honored, as it is the fastest way to build credibility and foster the long-term relationships essential for navigating the complexities of Los Angeles development. Ultimately, a strong reputation and unwavering word are the most valuable assets a builder possesses.

DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS ON THE POOR COMMUNICATIONS CONNECTED TO THE RECENT CHERVON FIRE?
** I agree with these sentiments. Manhattan Beach residents deserve to be notified in a more timely manner. Many people went into panic mode & left their homes not knowing what had happened. —- John Braitman (President MB Neighborhood Watch)
** Totally Unacceptable! And, Very Troubling! —- Mark Burton (Former Mayor)

A Tribute To MarySue Brubaker From Her Neptunian Sisters:
We, the Neptunian Woman’s Club, lovingly honor our dear sister, MarySue Brubaker, a cherished Hermosa Beach resident who shared over 60 beautiful years with her devoted husband, Steve. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Julie (Mike) Hatcher and Mark (Trisha) Brubaker, building a family rooted in love and connection. MarySue’s professional journey soared with American Airlines and continued with Yourrep at LAX, where her warmth touched countless lives. An avid skier alongside Steve, she embraced life’s adventures with joy and enthusiasm. Her commitment to service was truly inspiring. MarySue exemplified leadership and dedication. Since joining our Neptunian Woman’s Club in 2008, she served as a board member and co-chair of the annual Christmas wrap at Manhattan Village Mall, bringing holiday magic to our community with her radiant spirit. MarySue’s generosity lives on through the sports scholarship she and her family donated last spring through our Neptunian Scholarship Program, empowering a Mira Costa volleyball player to chase their dreams. To our beloved sister, MarySue, your legacy of kindness, leadership, and community spirit will forever inspire us. With love and gratitude, your Neptunian sisters celebrate you.

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
Time Tinkering Has Worn Out Its Welcome
MB Weekly readers have spoken loud and clear: 71% say it’s time to stop the twice-yearly ritual of changing clocks for Daylight Saving Time. The informal poll reflects a growing national frustration with the practice. “I am sick and tired of changing my clock,” said Lesley K., an El Segundo resident, echoing the sentiments of many who participated. Critics argue that the time shift disrupts sleep, productivity, and even health, while supporters claim it saves energy and makes better use of daylight. California voters approved a 2018 ballot measure to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, but federal approval has stalled. With overwhelming local support for change, momentum may finally build for lawmakers to act. For now, South Bay residents will once again adjust their clocks – and their moods – as the ritual continues.

Chasing History – Mira Costa’s Don Morrow Nears South Bay Coaching Record:

According to Cal-Hi Sports, Morrow’s career record now stands at 285-149-3, built over 36 seasons of consistency and leadership. He began his head coaching journey at South in 1989 before moving to Mira Costa in 1993, where he has built one of the region’s most enduring programs.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Mark Burton (Former Manhattan Beach Mayor)
Bob Holmes COMMENTARY Regarding Your Ask The Mayors: Can’t you get over it Bob? It’s been almost ten years! I was proud of my service on Council and our Council was generally fiscally conservative. However, since I have been off City Council, the City Council has been anything but fiscally conservative. Since I left City Council, I find it ironic that you have continued to support and help elect candidates who have drastically increased salaries with salaries skyrocketing to well over $200,000 for over 350 employees, staggering increases in unfunded pension obligations in the tens and tens of millions and increased staffing by more than fifty full-time positions to the all time high of 350. Simply put, a fiscal conservative you are not! As far as transparency and open government, in a secret meeting, these same individuals invited the LA County Fire Department to take over our local Manhattan Beach Fire Department. And, as far as integrity, you have consistently supported and helped elect a candidate who was convicted of a felony theft charge and whose state license was taken away for fraudulent actions. Although I appreciate your public service to our Country and City, I simply don’t have much respect for your lack of fiscal discipline.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Fred Taylor (Community Activist)
I read Paul Beswick’s critique of my commentary regarding Charlie Kirk. I must challenge Mr. Beswick’s presumption that I agreed with President Trump and Vice President Vance who allegedly called for retaliation against those celebrating Kirk’s death. I can’t judge what’s in their hearts. If folks want to be insensitive, disrespectful and even cheer his death, that’s on them. Thankfully, we still have free speech. For myself, I wouldn’t personally celebrate the death of any radical progressive I passionately oppose. He went on to parse my words accusing me of using inflammatory words: Yet, words do mean things and I carefully chose “political enemies” rather than “political opponents”. Why? Because most of us could be respectful regarding the death of an opponent; While we have to dig much deeper into compassion to empathize for death of a political enemy. It’s all about making civility a priority.

Remembering Officer Chad Swanson – Two Years Later, His Legacy Endures:
This month marks two years since the tragic loss of Manhattan Beach Police Officer Chad Swanson, whose life was cut short in a motorcycle crash on the 405 Freeway at Del Amo Avenue in 2023. The truck driver responsible was later arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter. Swanson served the Manhattan Beach Police Department with distinction for 13 years, first as a Motorcycle Officer and later as a member of the SWAT Team. His wife and three sons survive him.

MB WEEKLY – READER COMMENT:
by G.M. (Manhattan Beach)
Perhaps the tremendous success of MB Weekly is explained by nothing more mysterious than this: communities flourish when they are willing to speak openly, honestly, civilly, and without ideological blinders. The South Bay, against all odds, has become an extraordinary exception to the grinding decline of greater Los Angeles – an oasis in a parched landscape. But such exceptionalism is not self-sustaining; it requires constant tending if we are to keep our community vibrant and sane. It will not happen through the perfumed evasions of bureaucrats or the recycled word salads of consultants, but through candid, civil, and unbiased dialogue. In a time when truth is often treated as a nuisance, MB Weekly has kept the conversation real. And for that, the community owes a sincere and hearty: thank you.

Great White Swims Into Manhattan Beach:
Great White, the Aussie-style all-day café that first made waves in Venice Beach in 2017, is headed to Manhattan Beach. The brand has filed a liquor license application for 401 Manhattan Beach Blvd., the former Pitfire Pizza space. While no opening date is confirmed, this will mark Great White’s sixth location, joining Venice, Larchmont, West Hollywood, and Brentwood, which debuted in April. Co-founders Sam Trude and Sam Cooper are also simultaneously working on a Studio City café to replace a former PizzaRev. Manhattan Beach diners can expect the same coastal-inspired atmosphere and all-day menu that has fueled the café’s expansion.
