Dear Mayor: WHY HAVE THE ESCALATORS AT METLOX BEEN ALLOWED TO GO UNREPAIRED FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS? IT SEEMS A PROBLEM THAT THE CITY SHOULD ADDRESS. —- J.A., MANHATTAN BEACH
A: Well, I’d like to say that it’s all part of the City’s new exercise program to promote healthy living by taking the stairs but that’s just a bad joke. I’m just as frustrated as everyone else is about the repeated failures of the escalators at Metlox. We’ve had rotating issues with contractors, supply chains, all the things you’ve been hearing about whenever things have broken down over the last couple of years and nobody seems to know why it takes so long to fix them. In this case we do know why – the escalators are old and at the end of their useful life. They need to be replaced, but in the meantime, we’ll continue to repair them the best we can because replacing them is not a quick, easy or cheap undertaking and we’ll need to budget for their replacement this June. Until then, if anyone has any ambulatory issues, we want to encourage folks to take the elevators. As of the time I wrote this, they were working!

Dear Mayor: SINCE THERE APPEARS TO BE SUCH A RISE IN CRIME LATELY IN MANHATTAN BEACH, HOW DO YOU THINK THE NEW POLICE CHIEF IS DOING? —- P.C., MANHATTAN BEACH
A: Chief Johnson is doing a great job. To combat rising crime, the Chief recently proposed and the City Council approved the hiring of 7 new police officers, one Police Support Supervisor, and one Administrative Assistant, bringing our total number of sworn positions to 72 from 65. The additional staffing will be devoted to crime prevention, active response, and investigative follow up. The new positions will also allow the Department to create a Crime Impact Group to support investigative efforts in the Detective Bureau through conducting surveillance, following leads, identifying suspects, composing warrants, and making arrests as appropriate. Additionally, a year-round full-time bike patrol unit will enhance engagement within our community, providing highly visible patrols in both the residential and commercial areas, including our downtown, while also patrolling areas difficult to patrol in vehicles, such as the bike path, high density traffic locations, and small streets and alleys. The addition of administrative support will free up Detective’s time to focus on investigative work, and will ensure the crime data is up to date and provided to the community in a timely manner. We also continue to look at the increased use of cameras and drones as near future steps in our policing. With these improvements, Chief Johnson has laid out a blue-print for the future of policing in Manhattan Beach and she has the full support of City Council.

Dear Mayor: IS IT TRUE THAT YOU WERE FIRST ELECTED TO THE CITY COUNCIL AT AGE 28? HOW IN THE HELL DID YOU PULL THAT OFF? —- S.H., MANHATTAN BEACH
A: Actually I was 26 when I was first elected. I had no money for a campaign but I had time, so my best friend and I printed off a bunch of flyers and went door to door throughout the whole city – twice. Apparently nobody had done that before, or at least not in anyone’s recent memory. But going door to door isn’t enough and still isn’t. People get elected for their positions and ideas and I like to think that since people knew I had lived here all my life, my message and ideas hit home with folks as someone who really cared and loved my community and would always put residents first. I’ve run on that same message ever since and it’s been the honor of my life to serve our community.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE MANHATTAN BEACH AS YOUR BUSINESS HEADQUARTERS?
A: I opened by first business here – Manhattan Beach Brewing Company 32 years ago and I have loved Manhattan Beach ever since. I moved from Palos Verdes to Manhattan Beach and haven’t looked back. It’s truly the perfect place to raise a family, we have amazing schools and the best beach. Where else can your kids take surf for PE?! The amazing community has supported me here since my first restaurant and I am forever grateful for that.

Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY EXPANSION PLANS FOR THE NEXT THREE YEAR?
A: After COVID, we are instead focusing on rebuilding the businesses; remodeling, updating menus and retraining staff. COVID was very difficult for the restaurant & hotel industry. We are however currently working on one new concept… more on that soon, but we plan to open it in 2024.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING YOUR RESTAURANTS POST-COVID?
A: Staffing, supply chain issues and costs.

WOW! – MBPD Finds More Than 40,000 Fake Oxycodone Pills:

A mound of allegedly bogus Oxycodone pills was discovered by officers during a traffic stop in Manhattan Beach last week, according to the police. On the evening of February 23, police officers on Rosecrans Avenue stopped a car for violating the rules after spotting it, according to Manhattan Beach Police Department officer Andre Abreu. When police investigated the automobile, they discovered more than 40,000 phony pills hidden in various locations. It’s undoubtedly a lot for one person to carry about, according to Abreu. The risk of these bogus pills, according to the police, is in what they might contain. In situations like these, it’s not unusual for them to be spiked with fentanyl and methamphetamine. Since 2016, there have been an increase in the number of fentanyl overdose deaths in Los Angeles County, prompting regulators to urge extra vigilance from the general public.

*****The Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant still isn’t doing enough to mitigate odors coming from the facility, according to the region’s air quality watchdog. It makes sense a change was inevitable. The so-called mass California exodus is slowing; remember, those who replaced them are more wealthy. The possibilities for those who stay are still growing. TWO PEOPLE ARRESTED FOR HERMOSA BEACH SHOOTING:

Tuesday saw the arrest of two men on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a gunfire that injured a man in Hermosa Beach. According to the Hermosa Beach Police Department, John Lars Holland, 74, and John Rogers, 68, were detained in connection with the shooting that happened Monday night about 8:30 p.m. near the 2000 block of Hermosa Avenue. A male victim was shot while he was inside a parked automobile, according to the police. The victim only sustained slight wounds. It was unclear if the victim actually had a gunshot wound or other injuries. Authorities claim that at around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, they found the vehicle they thought was connected to the shooting and detained the driver, Holland. Detectives found a 9mm semi-automatic handgun during the arrest, which was consistent with the weapon used in the attack.

Enough Is Enough, Coyotes To Be Trapped In Manhattan Beach:

The City Council recently broadened its approach to include employing a coyote trapper. As a result, coyotes, who have been expanding their habitat into Manhattan Beach and causing much concern among pet owners and other residents, will likely be targeted and euthanized. Lois Applebaum, a longtime Manhattan Beach resident and pet owner, exclaimed, “This action is long overdue!” The city has been far too passive, and we have been living in terror for a while.

Seventy Years Of Fitting Like A Glove:

Dive N’ Surf, the oldest diving and surfing shop in the United States, is celebrating its 70th Birthday in 2023. It is a classic American success story that is a clear example of how capitalism and hard work has lifted millions of people out of poverty.

Bill and Bob Meistrell, identical twins, graduated from El Segundo High School. They didn’t have any money or family connections. They were good swimmers and became lifeguards and owners of Dive N’ Surf. As lifeguards they got cold in the water and decided to do something about it. They learned about neoprene, purchased some and made the first commercially viable wetsuits.

They sold the wetsuits in Dive N’ surf and then decided to expand into the wholesale market. They were selling “private label” wetsuits to the local surf shops. One day a friend said, “You need to develop your own brand.” Bill Meistrell said, “What should we name this brand?” The friend said, “Tell me something good about your wetsuits.” Bill said, “They’re great, they fit like a glove.” The friend said, “Why don’t you call them Body Glove” and a brand was born.

Seventy years later the family still runs Dive N’ Surf. Body Glove products are sold worldwide and annual sales are in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Thousands of jobs have been created. All because two brothers got cold in the water, decided to do something about it, and lived in a country where this could happen.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO OPEN UP ROCKEFELLER FOR LUNCH IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: During the last few crazy years, we decided to take this time to remodel our location, update our menu with new (and past favorites) items, and bring back our happy hour, $2 burger Tuesday special and of course, LUNCH! We are staffed with an amazing group of team members (both front of house and back of house) and are ready to serve our amazing community every day for lunch!

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU OWNED ROCKEFELLER?
A: I opened the first location in Hermosa Beach in 2010, then expanded to Manhattan Beach in 2013 and finally to Redondo Beach in 2017. Living in Manhattan Beach, this location is my home base.

Q: WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF OWNING A RESTAURANT TODAY?
A: The challenges of owning restaurants seem to change almost daily, but most recently it was staffing during COVID. That has now been replaced with managing costs. Food Costs, Labor Costs and a pretty significant increase in “additional costs” that restaurants have not had to deal with in the past, such as outdoor dining equipment (heaters, tables, chairs, decor, lighting, pressure washing, additional staff, etc) and government costs (tax increases, permits, etc). It is a constant job to deal with the next challenge and get through it so the business and the staff are taken care of.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN THE SOUTH BAY?
A: Some of my favorite restaurants are the ones that I am most impressed with the owners, such as Arthur J and MB POST (I think Chef David and Mr. Simms are absolute studs). I also love my other locations (Riviera Mexican Grill, Captain Kidds Fish Market, Primo Italia) more because of how great our staff is and how impressed I am with them and all they do.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: World War Z … No, it’s not just because of Brad Pitt. I just like it. I don’t really know why, but I bet I have watched it over 20 times. Where is the sequel???

In A Manhattan Beach Coworking Facility, A La Comic Debuts Pop-Up Performances:

Sean Leary (above) stated that he hoped to bring regular laughter to the South Bay in an area devoted to artists. Sean Leary, a comedian, wants the South Bay to laugh more. He created a pop-up comedy club there last month at Unita, a coworking space in Manhattan Beach, located at 516 N. Sepulveda Boulevard. About 120 people, or the maximum capacity, attended the first comedy show. The talent for the second event, which was held on Saturday, February 18, came from all around the country, and the third show, which is scheduled for March 4, will follow suit. Those who have appeared on “America’s Got Talent” are among those with this talent, according to Leary, and each comedy presentation is roughly 90 minutes long.

** I would go to Molfetta in the Puglia Region of Italy. The birthplace of my father Mauro Altamura. My Dad migrated to America when he was 17 years old in 1919. He came by himself. He landed in NYC and lived in Hell’s kitchen where he met my mother Stella Buonfiglio. Molfetta is on the Adriatic coast and has an OLD section and a NEW section. The pedestrians in MB could also use a wakeup call. Thursday morning at 5:20 a.m. I was headed north on Highland preparing to turn right on to 15th St. A hooded pedestrian was in the cross walk headed east. As I approached the yield sign he was right in front of me. Had I not yielded, he would be in the hospital or worse. The lesson here comes from the fact he never looked right to make sure I was yielding and it was safe to continue crossing. He assumed I would stop. What if I had been texting, looking at a cell phone or whatever and failed to see him? Pedestrians should get their heads out of their XXXXX and be aware that drivers can be distracted or drunk. Assuming nothing will hurt you because you are in the right is a dumb assumption. The same goes for people who are standing next to their car on many of MB’s narrow streets with their driver’s side car door(s) wide open without a care about approaching traffic.

GREENBERG CHOSEN FOR MBUSD SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERSHIP:

At a special meeting, Bruce Greenberg was appointed to the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. Jason Boxer’s position will be filled by Greenberg after he resigned in January. The cost of a special election, which the L.A. County Registrar estimated at $879,000, led the board to opt for an appointment procedure.

Local residents Heather Kim & Heidi Rayden, along with Kim’s four children, created a “reimagined” blue line flag, presenting it to the Mayor in last week’s city council meeting requesting the city display it in the Police Department lobby windows. “The blue line flag has been unfairly mischaracterized by the media. In an effort to unite our community and show much needed public support for MBPD we reimagined the flag with hearts and an abundance of love & gratitude for our heroic officers who risk their lives to keep us safe. Expanding Slay’s Restaurant Empire:

Pa-Do was acquired by someone who has made a significant impact on the local dining scene quickly after it closed shortly after the departure of original chef Al Kim. Slay French Bistro is the new moniker, and the menu now includes dishes such as stuffed grape leaves cooked in tomato and lemon sauce, lamb shank with pomegranate molasses, and duck confit with satsumas. David Slay did not specify when the transition will take place.

It is unaffordable to build affordable housing in Manhattan Beach. Why? Because the land value in our City is among the highest in Los Angeles County per square footage, profitability has been nonexistent for developers for decades. The exception to this rule is when a small percentage of units in a development are designated as low-income. That has been the option for any developer since 1979. Only recently has one developer exercised that option in over 40 years. There are very few lots in Manhattan Beach that offer the same variables. The most radical property law (SB9) available for anyone for well over a year allows for multiple homes on existing single-family (R1) lots. If that change had been significant for developers, they would have been gearing strategic plans well before the law was in place. As of this writing, ZERO permits have been pulled at the Manhattan Beach Planning Dept to build multiple units on R1 lots. The two most extreme property markets of rise and decline in less than a year significantly indicate how unremarkable SB9 will affect our town.
