MANHATTAN BEACH RANKED ONE OF THE RICHEST CITIES IN THE U.S.:

In a recent report by 24/7 Wall Street, Manhattan Beach has secured a position as one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. The “America’s Richest Cities” study identified four Southern California communities among the nation’s top 50 affluent locales. Manhattan Beach and Rancho Palos Verdes in Los Angeles County, along with Ladera Ranch and North Tustin in Orange County, made the prestigious list. The rankings were determined by evaluating communities with populations exceeding 25,000 residents analyzing median household income and median home value based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey data. Including these Southern California cities highlights the region’s economic prosperity and reinforces their status as havens for wealth and upscale living in the United States.

Q: YOUR RESTAURANTS HAVE HAD TREMENDOUS SUCCESS IN MANHATTAN BEACH. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET SAUCE?
A: Being present at the restaurants is very important to me. Also, having a team behind me that cares about guests the way our family does and treats guests the way they want to be treated. In the peculiar landscape of relationship deal-breakers, I faced an unexpected and insurmountable obstacle: my new boyfriend’s refusal to use toilet paper. What started as a seemingly innocuous shortage evolved into a startling confession that shattered the delicate balance of our relationship. Shocked and revolted, I decided to end our romance then and there. While some might view this as an extreme response, it underscores the significance we attach to seemingly trivial habits in the context of a relationship. This anecdote serves as a reminder that shared values and essential compatibility are the cornerstones of lasting connections. Sometimes, it’s the everyday details that force us to confront deeper issues and make decisions that, on the surface, might seem inconceivable. It’s been five weeks since this sickening episode, and I still have nightmares about this.

A woman pulled up next to me at Target Manhattan Beach. I was with my granddaughter. She told me I looked young for a grandmother and then said she would take our picture. She had a very old car and an old phone. She was behaving erratically, and I told her I had to go. I think she was trying to distract me … maybe someone else was going to grab my purse or bags? Also, as I was leaving, two older cars in the back part of a parking lot looked like someone was living in them. Beware.

Silverlake Ramen

My experience at Silverlake Ramen in Manhattan Village, Manhattan Beach, was utterly disappointing. The service was abysmal, reflecting a total lack of customer attention and care. The wait times were excessively long, transforming a simple meal into an endurance test. The understaffed restaurant seemed indifferent to the frustrations of the patrons, creating an atmosphere of neglect. The food quality was adequate. The flavors were fair, failing to justify the agonizing wait. The restaurant’s ambiance did not compensate for the shortcomings in the service, leaving me with an overwhelmingly negative impression. Regrettably, I cannot recommend Silverlake Ramen to those seeking a satisfying dining experience in Manhattan Beach; poor service and extended wait times overshadow any potential culinary merits.

Conventional wisdom suggests walking after a meal clears the mind and promotes digestion. Research has also shown that a 15-minute walk after a meal helps lower blood sugar and prevent Type 2 diabetes. However, a few minutes of walking can activate these benefits. A meta-analysis published in Sports Medicine examined seven studies that assessed the effects of sitting versus standing or walking on heart health, including insulin and blood sugar levels. Light walking for two to five minutes after a meal lowered blood sugar levels significantly.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia (El Segundo)

The case of Markham Bond casts a stark shadow on the consequences of misguided, naive compassion in our justice system. Granted compassionate release just a year ago after a 26-year sentence for armed robberies, Bond’s recent indictment for robbing a Brinks courier at gunpoint in Westchester exposes the dangers of prematurely releasing individuals with violent histories. Charged with multiple offenses, including using a firearm during a crime of violence, Bond’s reappearance in criminal activities underscores the failure of rehabilitation efforts and our justice system generally. The $145,000 he allegedly stole in a brazen attack outside a bank leaves our streets unsafe, challenging the very notion of “compassion” in criminal justice. The job of our justice system is to help keep the public safe, not play Santa Claus.

MB WEEKLY:
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH
RABBI YOSSI MINTZ

(Rabbi of Chabad of the Beach Cities)

Q: HAVING BEEN A RABBI FOR A LONG TIME, HOW DO YOU REFLECT ON THE TRAGIC BARBARITY YOU OBSERVED IN ISRAEL ON OCTOBER 7TH?
A: For me personally, as a grandchild of the Holocaust survivor, never in my life I would imagine such brutality and hate. To treat another human being the way they did from young children to senior citizens, Holocaust survivors as well as women and young girls to be raped mutilated and then tortured to death, is unconscionable. There is no place in civilization to have these individuals and groups among us.

Q: ARE YOU OPTIMISTIC THAT, IN THE END, ISRAEL WILL ELIMINATE HAMAS ENTIRELY AND TOTALLY?
A: I strongly feel that [there] is no other choice. Unfortunately, war is a terrible thing and innocent people are killed as well. From our history when the U.S. bombed Japan and Britain destroyed Dresden, it brought the end of World War II and saved millions of people from certain death. Unfortunately, many lives were lost and some innocent, which is heartbreaking. if not for their actions, we would never celebrate the freedom that we have today in United States and the world. The deaths are blamed 100% on the perpetrators, the inhumane individuals that must be eradicated completely.

Q: HOW HAVE YOU REACTED TO WATCHING THE PRESIDENTS OF IVY LEAGUE UNIVERSITIES TESTIFY BEFORE CONGRESS?
A: Unfortunately, it’s not just the presidents, it’s a complete breakdown of these universities. Parents must be aware that when they send their children off to the college/university, they are being brainwashed by these professors. They must be terminated immediately. They are educating and molding our children to hate America, hate the freedom that we celebrate, … and their parents are being untruthful to them.

Q: WHAT CAN GOOD PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH BAY DO TO ASSIST ISRAEL AT THIS CRITICAL TIME?
A: We must continue to spread light. We cannot battle severe darkness with our own hands. We must eliminate it through light. A little bit of light dispels much darkness at its root. Each one of us have the opportunity to become a Lamplighter, inspiring and impacting others in a positive way, through celebrating our religious freedom and celebrating the freedom that our founding fathers instituted, the God-given freedom for each one to live [and] impact the world in a positive way.

Q: BEFORE OCTOBER 7TH, DID YOU HAVE ANY SENSE THAT ANTI-SEMITISM IN BOTH AMERICA AND THE WORLD WAS THIS BAD?
A: Before October 7 it definitely existed but it did not impact or bring fear or anxiety to most. Unfortunately, after October 7 we have become aware of many individuals/leaders and organizations that their masks were taken off and their true identity was revealed.

Sleep has emerged as a crucial factor in our quest for optimal health and well-being, prompting the rise of sleep-tracking devices. These gadgets promise insights into our nightly rest, monitoring everything from sleep duration to deep and REM sleep cycles. As technology advances, many wearable devices and smartphone apps flood the market, offering users a glimpse into their sleep patterns. However, amidst the excitement, sleep experts like Dr. Baron caution against overly relying on these devices. While they can offer valuable information and entertain users, sleep remains complex and enigmatic. Dr. Baron emphasizes that sleep is more than mere numbers or scores and that there is still much to uncover regarding its intricate role in our overall health. As these devices evolve, it’s essential to approach their data skeptically, acknowledging the vast unknowns that persist in sleep science.

Manhattan Beach Cut The Ribbon On Renovated Fire Station #2:

Mayor Richard Montgomery, city officials, and Fire Chief Mike Lang cut the ribbon for the re-opening of Manhattan Beach Fire Station No. 2. The city opened Fire Station No. 2, 1400 Manhattan Beach Blvd., with a tour after the ribbon cutting. The city planned to reconstruct the station in 2021 after an architectural analysis 2017 revealed that the 1954 building could have collapsed in an earthquake or other natural calamity. During construction, the station crew operated at No. 1 (15th Street and Valley Drive). The ribbon-cutting event was in November, but firefighters will move into the new building after the holidays.

The Kettle – Thanksgiving Dinner

The Kettle in Manhattan Beach is an iconic local gem and a Thanksgiving tradition not to be missed. Offering outstanding value at $32.95 per person, the “Locally Famous” Thanksgiving dinner was a feast that captured the essence of this coastal community. From succulent turkey to delectable sides like yams, mashed potatoes, and flavorful cornbread stuffing, every bite celebrated traditional holiday flavors. Including brussel sprouts, soup, Caesar salad, and a choice between pumpkin or pecan pie, added a delightful variety to the spread. The no-reservation policy, walk-in-only starting at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, added to the charm, fostering a communal atmosphere, but as you would expect, there was a long line. In this summer’s “No Hard Feelings,” Jennifer Lawrence plays Maddie, a Montauk native on the verge of losing her childhood home, who deflowers an introverted nineteen-year-old at his wealthy summer-people parents’ request. She gets a secondhand Buick for “dating” him. The premise could have gone a hundred ways sour, but Lawrence, who appears in practically every scene, excels at comedy. She’s mean, frightening, brave, and charming, whether she’s skinny-dipping, beating up youngsters on the beach, or getting punched in the throat. The movie makes fun of Maddie’s generational gap with her Zoomer quarry, and its biggest joke is when she interrupts a teen home party and finds the kids looking at their phones. She shouts, “Doesn’t anyone f–k anymore?” like a raunchfest relic.

By now, all Manhattan Beach property owners should have received the ballot to vote on the proposed storm drain fee increase. I strongly urge you to vote YES. My former City Council colleague Russ Lesser also joins me in strongly urging you to vote YES. Storm drains and water run-off are not sexy topics, but they are nonetheless vital. Our storm drains and flood control system are quite old and need replacement and upgrading. The fee is modest for the value we will receive.

7. ** Sorry, Barbra Streisand, you are an entertainer and were quite good, I must admit. I don’t give a hoot about your trivial opinion on other subjects. MB WEEKLY:
EXCLUSIVE READER QUESTION
TO MB MAYOR
RICHARD MONTGOMERY

Dear Mayor: WHY DO YOU FEEL IT IS VITAL FOR THE CITY OF MANHATTAN BEACH TO BECOME MORE STRICT WITH MINOR CRIME INFRACTIONS?
A: Our current Los Angeles District Attorney (Gascón) decided not to prosecute “minor crimes.” This decision led to an increase in “minor crimes” in Manhattan Beach and throughout the county. The DA’s “catch and release” philosophy has been a complete disaster for our residents and businesses alike. As a result, the council considered it vital to rewrite our own ordinances that address minor crimes and then enforce them. Criminals that commit “minor crimes” here will soon learn that bad acts have consequences.

MB WEEKLY READER POLL:
43% Frequently Constipated

In a surprising revelation from the latest MB Reader Poll, a staggering 43% of respondents admitted to frequently grappling with constipation. The startling statistic emerged as respondents were asked about the frequency of their constipation experiences, with 43% confessing to enduring the condition either “often” or “all the time.” Health experts emphasize that chronic constipation can have a detrimental impact on one’s overall well-being, affecting not only physical health but also mental and emotional states. Lifestyle factors, dietary choices, and stress are commonly associated with constipation, and the poll results may prompt increased awareness and dialogue around these issues.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Bob Holmes

Former Manhattan Beach Councilman

Q: WHEN WERE YOU THE MAYOR OF MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I served three 4-year terms on the MB City Council from 1980 to 1992. During each of those three terms I served a rotation as Mayor.

Q: WHAT WAS THE GREATEST LESSON YOU LEARNED IN SERVING THE CITY?
A: This may seem so self-evident, but I learned that you just simply cannot make everyone happy all of the time. However, without naming names, I have seen some councilmembers try to please everyone. That just doesn’t work. Residents can detect a phony. To be truly successful you must be guided by a set of principles about government and our city and act consistently with your principles.

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I started riding waves at the Manhattan Beach Pier in 1964 and moved here in 1968. With the exception of a year tour of duty with the Army in Vietnam, I have lived here ever since including 37 years in my current residence.

Q: IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE GREATEST PROBLEM FACING THE CITY IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
A: Most of our City Councils have been fiscally responsible. It is a constant challenge to fulfill the high expectations of our residents and still maintain a strong financial position. Along these lines I strongly support the upcoming stormwater tax increase. It is a pretty modest increase to individual property owners, but failure to pass it will stress our City finances. There are always unfunded mandates from the state and federal governments.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN THE AREA?
A: My wife and I love Rock ’N Fish, Mangiamo, Shellback, and Ercole’s for dinner. For breakfast, it’s gotta be Uncle Bill’s!

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: I am not into astrology.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: My two favorite movies are a couple of old classics – Big Wednesday and Where The Buffalo Roam. Big Wednesday absolutely captured the spirit of the South Bay in the early to mid 60’s. Where the Buffalo Roam features an amazing Bill Murray as Hunter S. Thompson. I defy you to watch it and not be constantly smiling and laughing.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by John McKillop

Businesses and individuals pay marketers billions to write bogus positive reviews on Google Maps, Amazon, Yelp, and other platforms, deceiving millions of customers annually. As old as the internet, fake reviews are unlawful and forbidden by online sites. Despite this, bogus review firms have grown. For the first time, regulation and tech company efforts are coming together to alter the tide. The Federal Trade Commission proposed a broad rule last summer to punish corporations for purchasing or selling phony reviews, among other prohibitions. Amazon, Expedia, and other online platforms collaborated to fight review fraud in October.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia (El Segundo)

Controversial District Attorney George Gascón’s tenure in Los Angeles County continues to be marred by alarming allegations of political manipulation and questionable ethical conduct. The recent lawsuit by Assistant Head Deputy District Attorney Amy Pentz reveals a deeply troubling pattern of behavior within the Justice System Integrity Division. The accusation that Gascón deliberately withheld a decision not to file charges against a deputy in a use-of-force case to influence the election dynamics is an egregious abuse of power. Pentz’s removal as second-in-command after raising concerns further underscores the toxic environment fostered by Gascón. This alleged manipulation compromises the justice system’s integrity and raises serious questions about Gascón’s commitment to transparency and fair play. Pursuing personal and political agendas at the expense of justice erodes public trust. L.A. County deserves a District Attorney who prioritizes the rule of law over political gamesmanship. Gascón’s actions, as outlined in this lawsuit, undermine the principles his office should uphold. If horrid rising crime due to his radical left-wing policies isn’t enough to upset you, add this to your menu.
