UN-HAPPY NEW YEAR:

Shortly after New Year’s Eve, a critically injured Manhattan Beach shooting victim was admitted to the hospital. According to authorities, a guy was shot in the first two hours of 2024 and taken to the hospital with potentially fatal injuries. At 1:23 a.m., there was a report of gunfire in the 1400 block of 11th Street, prompting police to react. A man with a gunshot wound was discovered on the street by the responding officers. The man was sent to Harbor General Hospital. It’s not thought that this is a random attack. Even though many details are still unclear, the MBPD stated. As per MBPD, the inquiry is still underway. Detective Hartnell’s number to report any more information was 310-802-5127

Manhattan Beach One Of America’s Most Beautiful Beaches:

The Golden State’s beaches lure tourists worldwide, and Westgate Resorts’ new survey found Manhattan Beach to be one of the most visited beaches in the country. The study correlated Instagram hashtags to length to determine which beaches had the most hashtags per meter. Manhattan Beach was the sixth most Instagrammable in the nation at 3,379 meters. The analysis found 1,614,293 Instagram beach hashtags, 478 per meter, at the Los Angeles County beach. Despite being the most petite beach in the top 10, La Jolla was the most Instagrammable at 86 meters. Laguna Beach placed third, followed by Venice Beach in fourth. Neighboring Hermosa Beach placed seventh, missing the top five.

When I ran for City Council in 2022, I was shocked to hear that the fee for maintaining our aging storm drain infrastructure had not been increased since my daughter was born in 1996! The annual fees collected, plus funds from Measure W, account for 10-20% of the costs needed. The General Fund has supplemented the additional costs. But that is not sustainable and is not accessible to homeowners either. The price cuts in other services and programs, and we slowly deplete what was once a plentiful fund. Be aware that this is not a tax. It is a fee. A fee is used for a specific purpose and cannot exceed actual costs. The City Council will consider the budget presented by staff yearly for our storm drain needs. Each eligible voter has received a ballot with extensive information regarding the Storm Drain Measure.

There is one question: Shall we increase the fee to current-day costs to support storm drain improvements, maintenance, and operations? Yes or No

Know the FACTS, and vote by January 17, 2024.

MB WEEKLY – HISTORY:
Thirty Years Subsequently – Officer Martin Ganz Is Remembered

OFFICER Officer Martin Ganz was shot and killed while making a traffic stop in the parking lot of the Manhattan Village Mall on Sepulveda Boulevard and Marine Avenue at 11:15 pm. As he was outside of the patrol car, the driver of the other car exited and started firing at him. Officer Ganz tried to take cover behind his vehicle but was shot numerous times. Officer Ganz’s 12-year-old nephew was on a ride along with him and the suspect attempted to shoot at him, but his gun misfired and the boy was not harmed. The suspect was arrested approximately eight months later in connection with another murder in Oregon. The suspect was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the Oregon murder. In December 1998, the suspect was sentenced to death for the murder of Officer Ganz. Officer Ganz was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Manhattan Beach Police Department for five years. He was survived by his fiancee, mother, and five sisters. On the 12th anniversary of Officer Ganz’s murder, a section of the I-405 between Hawthorne Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue was renamed the Martin L. Ganz Memorial Highway.

If the recent history of the airline industry has taught us anything, the larger an airline gets, the worse off they get. Prices rise, seats are smaller, and service becomes more snarky. Americans have not benefited from the mergers that over the previous 15 years have established the “big three” of United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines (eliminating Continental, Northwest, and U.S. Airways) that now dominate the market together with Southwest Airlines. As a result, airlines are now offering less for more and are more adept than ever at obtaining congressional bailouts. This is the background against which JetBlue Airways is currently attempting to acquire Spirit Airlines, the biggest ultra-low-cost carrier in the country. If approved, the acquisition would elevate JetBlue to the nation’s fifth-largest airline and drastically diminish industry competition. Big almost always equals terrible for the customer.

(Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

The ballot measure proposes to renew the existing $225 per year parcel tax for six more years with no increase. Based on my financial review, I believe it should be renewed. The district financials show that we will have multi-million dollar deficits in the future without the parcel tax, which could result in the laying off of some teachers and increasing class size. Passing it is critical to retaining and recruiting talented teachers. Even after the enrollment decline over the past several years, our student-to-teacher ratio is already higher than the state average. While I do not agree with everything in the schools, they still produce excellent students. Most of our school-age children attend our local public schools, so even though Charlotte and I no longer have children attending the public schools, we will vote to renew the existing parcel tax.

(Manhattan Beach)

My first day in London I was turned out to be quite an adventure. After a long flight from Manhattan Beach, I found myself at London Gatwick Airport, eagerly awaiting my luggage at the baggage carousel. Little did I know I was about to witness a scene that would make my jetlag seem like a minor inconvenience. As I stood there, tired but excited, a fellow traveler named Robyn H. began filming the unfolding drama. A British man, whose identity remained a mystery, had what could only be described as an epic meltdown. I couldn’t help but be both fascinated and amused by the spectacle. The video Robyn captured started with the irate passenger yelling at the baggage carousel as if expecting it to respond. “Can you please hurry up?” he bellowed, frustration evident in his voice. It was the kind of impatience we’ve all felt after a long flight, but this man was taking it to a new level. Then came the unexpected twist. In a shocking turn of events, the man threatened to defecate on the conveyor belt if his luggage didn’t make its appearance promptly. “We are waiting! If you don’t hurry up, I will go poo on the f–king trail!” he angrily declared, much to the amusement of the surrounding passengers. I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears. The mixture of exhaustion and amusement washed over me as I observed the surreal scene. London was quite different from Manhattan Beach, and this unexpected encounter at the airport marked the beginning of my London adventure – one I would remember for a long time.

The criminal justice system in California is dysfunctional, and state voters contributed to this. However, voters received assistance from dishonest activists and politicians who made them believe they were casting their ballots for increased public safety. One of those liars is George Gascón, the district attorney of Los Angeles County, where over 10 million people in 88 localities are presently dealing with the full repercussions of Proposition 47, a 2014 initiative Gascón co-authored. The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act is the moniker given by the bill’s writers. And we were actually stupid enough to believe it.

In a recent MB Weekly reader poll, a striking 91% of respondents expressed the belief that Harvard University would have swiftly fired its president if they were a white Republican male amid allegations of antisemitism and repeated plagiarism. Even a majority of self-identifying Democrats agreed. The poll underscores concerns about perceived biases in academia. In the heart of Manhattan Beach, I offer a Christmas confession. Several clandestine affairs unfolded beneath the mistletoe-laden shadows of Christmas. I know. I am an anonymous mistress. As the yuletide season unfurled, each lover competed to outdo the other in a symphony of opulence – bespoke wardrobes with (believe it or not) handwritten love notes and jet-setting adventures to exotic locales, from sun-drenched beaches to snow-covered slopes. Beneath the veneer of festive cheer, the moguls of Manhattan Beach and I crafted a Christmas tale of passion and excess that would linger long after the last ornament had been packed away. I will never kiss and tell, but a book may be in the future.

Just a few short weeks ago, I wrote about the ‘hate speech’ event at MBMS and our District’s handling of that event. In the wake of the horrific 10/7 attack in Israel, a Middle Eastern permit student at MBMS approached four of our Jewish students, easily identified as Jewish by their clothing and jewelry. I met with Rabbi Yossi Mintz recently. One of his congregations at The Jewish Community Center was among those students. Because “All Israel should be killed” was said rather than “All Jews must be killed,” Dr. John Bowes, our Superintendent, astonishingly rendered that ‘political speech’ rather than ‘hate speech.’ Enter the Congressional testimony of Liz Magill, President of U Penn, attempting to rationalize the call for Jewish genocide on her campus. That debacle led to her resignation days later. Isn’t that the same lack of moral authority we’ve seen from our superintendent here in MB? And she lost her job, should he? Many of us, along with the Jewish community, are still outraged over the handling of this matter. And from the MBUSD Board: Crickets!

Manhattan Beach Wins National Prize For Safe, Imaginative Crosswalks:

Manhattan Beach revealed that its safe and imaginative crosswalks won a national award. The American Public Works Association awarded Manhattan Beach the Building Excellence Shaping Tomorrow award in the Creative and Innovative category for its Biennial Slurry Seal Program’s Decorative Crosswalks and Safety Enhancements Project. The American Public Works Association is a national organization dedicated to promoting excellence in public works and providing education, advocacy, and resources to public works professionals. According to a news release, “the project transformed heavily used crosswalks into artistic traffic-calming paths that promote pedestrian awareness. The eye-catching designs increase public art while celebrating the unique identity of North Manhattan Beach.” Mayor Richard Montgomery said in the statement, “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our City’s Public Works team and the collaborative spirit of our community. Ensuring the safety of our residents, especially pedestrians, remains a top priority. We will continue to invest in innovative solutions that keep our streets safe and beautiful for all to enjoy.”

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:

(Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

Last weekend, the Army Black Knights of West Point defeated the Navy Midshipmen of Annapolis in one of the longest-running rivalries in college sports (over 125 years). The Army, Navy, and Air Force Academies play for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, which was won by the Army this year. Ten U.S. Presidents, including Clinton, Trump, and Obama, have attended the historic Army/Navy games. Upon graduation, the men and women of the academies become commissioned officers and potentially put themselves in life-threatening situations to defend the rest of us. This year, President Joe Biden chose to come to sunny Southern California to hobnob with the Hollywood elite and beg for their (large) campaign contributions this weekend. I am sure that if his fundraisers were held on, say, a Tuesday or Wednesday evening, they would still turn out to support him. These are perilous times for our military. I’m sure a little more support from the Commander-In-Chief would be appreciated.

Nando Trattoria

Nando Trattoria is a gem in downtown Manhattan Beach that combines delightful flavors with an authentic Italian experience (this ain’t no chain). Dario, the charismatic owner, adds a personal touch to every visit with his humor and charm, making guests feel like old friends. The pear salad is a refreshing masterpiece, perfectly balancing sweet and savory elements, leaving taste buds joyful. The highlight of the evening was the outstanding Branzino fish, impeccably prepared and bursting with Mediterranean flavors. The attention to detail in each dish reflects a commitment to authentic Italian cuisine. The service is exemplary, reminiscent of dining in a small trattoria in Italy, with staff members who are attentive and genuinely passionate about their craft. Nando Trattoria is a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic taste of Italy. The warm ambiance, delectable cuisine, and Dario’s infectious personality create an unforgettable dining experience that keeps patrons returning for more.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia

In the worship of inclusivity, California’s move towards gender-neutral bathrooms in schools has sparked a contentious debate. While the intention to create safe spaces for all students is commendable, the practicality of this approach is questionable. Critics argue that it infringes on the privacy and comfort of many students, leading to discomfort and potential bullying. Additionally, concerns about safety and parental worries have been largely dismissed. It is crucial to acknowledge our society’s diverse beliefs and cultural backgrounds, respecting all families’ values and traditions. Moreover, implementing gender-neutral restrooms might be well-intentioned, but it overlooks the necessity for a balanced dialogue involving parents, educators, and policymakers. Education should prioritize the holistic well-being of students, addressing their emotional, social, and physical needs.

MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

SAFETY • CITY • CRIME • WOKE

** In a shocking turn of events, two 15-year-old Redondo Union High School sophomores were apprehended by the Redondo Beach Police Department this week for bringing loaded firearms onto the school premises. The arrests on Monday and Tuesday prompted the school to lockdown on both days, with heightened security measures implemented. As a precautionary measure, the school has decided to remain closed on December 6 while law enforcement conducts a thorough K-9 search for potential weapons and explosives. Deep and legitimate concerns have risen regarding parental responsibility as questions linger about where the teenagers obtained the firearms. Many call for a legal examination of the parents’ role in this alarming incident. I hope the parents are legally responsible for this outrageous behavior. —- Sara Garcia (El Segundo)

** I agree entirely with Lucia La Rosa’s analysis of the recent and current MBUSD Board. With the stir that this yet another episode of Anti-Semitic behavior in the District has created, Dr Bowes’s determination that this was “political” speech borders on fantasy. Two years ago, our parent group presented him with the pornographic book, “Gender Queer,” and we were asking the link on the website be taken down. He equivocated, saying, “Some parents speak for some books and other parents for other books.” He had pornography in front of him, and he couldn’t acknowledge it. I wonder if the same moral blindness drove this “political speech” decision. Manhattan Beach parents… “WE HAVE A PROBLEM” —- Fred Taylor

** I am looking for teenagers in a Black/Dark Gray Truck headed North around 5 PM on 400 Block of Highland Manhattan Beach. My 11-year-old fell off his skateboard, which went into the Street. He went to recover it; they purposely sped up to demolish it while laughing. If these Kids belong to you, tell them to come clean. Police have been notified, luckily my son avoided getting hit when they sped up. He is traumatized and shaking. 410-420 North Highland Avenue, Manhattan Beach, CA —- Serena Viharo (Manhattan Beach)

** After facing opposition from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office to prosecute nonviolent crimes that the DA no longer pursues, the Manhattan Beach City Council managed to address a portion of those crimes. The addition of prosecutorial authority to pursue some quality of life crimes beyond the DA’s jurisdiction was approved by the Council recently in a unanimous vote. This, of course, is good news, but can I ask what the f–k took them so long? Why does this City Council always seem slow and reactive instead of fast and proactive? —- Clay Tobias (Manhattan Beach)

ISRAEL HAMAS WAR

** I have been a member of this community for over 25 years and agree with Fred Taylor’s commentary! I am shocked and wholly angered at the Manhattan Beach district for not taking immediate and swift action against this child and her family! And I, too, reiterate that had it been anyone touting even slightly KKK slander, there would not have been a second of hesitation to oust such a disgusting display of ignorance. Have an inkling of integrity and wake up to your moral duty! Do something significant now! —- Alicia Gilbert

** I just returned from a funeral in Israel. Virtually all Israelis I spoke with found the shift in the West against Israel, which is becoming more overtly antisemitic and pro-Hamas, to be as terrifying as the recent Hamas slaughter itself. It’s evident in more than just the Sydney, Australia, chanting of “gas the Jews” and the attempted firebombing of a synagogue in Berlin. It’s also in the apathetic attitude of educated elites toward the plight of Israelis, as demonstrated by college-age students demolishing posters of Israeli civilians who have been abducted from their campuses. I strongly sense history isn’t going to be kind to our “woke” young friends. —- Stella G. (Manhattan Beach)

** Wow! I’m not surprised antisemitism is within our community, but I’m sickened and appalled that our educational institutions are failing in enormous ways. Ignorance is a choice; nothing will change unless we do better for our children, and history will repeat itself. MBUSD is an embarrassment, and my proud Jewish kids certainly won’t be attending the local schools. Way to keep Jews out! —- Sharon Feigenbaum

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN MANHATTAN BEACH, AND WHY?

** Since I am a long time East Manhattan Beach resident, I like the Tin Roof and The Lido that are both owned and operated by MB residents. Of course, Downtown MB has a great selection of MB resident owned and operated restaurants such as the Strand House, Slay and Fishing With Dynamite, to name a few. I guess you could say that my favorite restaurant in Manhattan Beach is the MB resident owned and operated restaurant. There is such a commitment to a great dining experience at a MB resident owned and operated restaurant and these restaurant owners always give back to our community and support our schools. In a word, these restaurants are “hometown”! —- Mark Burton, Former Manhattan Beach Mayor

** I like Il Forniao and Tin Roof. They have a versatile menu and food is always delicious. Service is good as well. I love the outdoor garden seating at Tin Roof as well. —- Nina Michaels, Veteran Realtor in Manhattan Beach
