EXCLUSIVE:
MANHATTAN BEACH CITY LEADERS SPEAK OUT ABOUT RACISM

Sign With Racial Slurs, Noose Found At Manhattan Beach Park:
Police reported a handmade placard with racist insults and a noose-shaped rope at a Manhattan Beach park. The Manhattan Beach Police Department observed a Nextdoor post showing the placard and rope dangling from a Sand Dune Park tree. Police investigated a remote park area by car. The sign was there when cops arrived, but no rope. Police took a report after city workers removed the placard. MBPD claimed nobody knew more about the find, and the inquiry is underway.

Manhattan Beach Mayor Joe Franklin:
The Manhattan Beach Police Department discovered a post on Nextdoor on April 25th that had a photo depicting a handwritten sign on a simple fort-like structure with racial slurs and a rope hanging from a tree that appeared to be knotted into the shape of a noose. It seemed to be taken at an isolated portion of Sand Dune Park well out of public view. Our MBPD Officers immediately responded and are investigating. City workers have since removed the sign. We are asking that anyone with information should contact Detective Seth Hartnell at (310) 802-5127. It is the City Council’s assertion that racism in any form is abhorrent and intolerable. It undermines the fabric of our society and inflicts deep wounds on our community. We denounce all forms of hate, bigotry, violence, and bullying and will investigate and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. Resources for help are available at www.manhattanbeach.gov/MBvsHate. Anyone wishing to report hate incidents should call 911 for an emergency, 310-545-4566 for our local MBPD Police Dispatch, or call 2-1-1 for the County’s program: L.A. vs. Hate.

Manhattan Beach Police Chief Rachel Johnson:
I was appalled to learn of this incident. Racism in any form is abhorrent and intolerable. It creates division where there would otherwise be none and distracts us from learning more about each other so that we may grow closer as a community and society. Racist commentary cannot be unseen or unheard, and the wounds inflicted by racism run deep. Hate is a disease that spreads and grows with ignorance and intolerance. I encourage residents to take action against hate, speak up in ways that draw attention to it among us, and educate themselves about the root causes of hate and intolerance. We must work as a community to create and preserve a culture where our children will thrive, and hate has no home. I encourage the community to visit www.manhattanbeach.gov/MBvsHate for resources they can use to stand up against racism in their everyday lives. It is worth noting that the Police Department learned of this incident from a Next Door post; I encourage members of the public to call dispatch (310-545-4566) to notify MBPD so that a report and investigation can be completed in a timely fashion. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call Detective Hartnell at 310-802-5127.

Manhattan Beach Readers Sound Alarm On Climate – Majority Fear Worsening Conditions In Lifetime:

In a revealing poll by MB Weekly, Manhattan Beach residents are sending a clear message: climate change is no distant threat but a present reality. A significant majority of readers believe climate change’s effects are already causing harm to their community, with 63% anticipating further deterioration in their lifetime. Nancy G., a seasoned resident of Manhattan Beach, succinctly captured the sentiment: “No one can tell them the weather isn’t weirder.” Her words echo the collective unease permeating the coastal town as residents grapple with increasingly erratic weather patterns and environmental disruptions. This poll underscores the pressing need for immediate action to mitigate and adapt to climate change at the local level. With their eyes fixed on the future, Manhattan Beach residents are acknowledging the problem and demanding solutions to safeguard their community for generations to come.

On the last page of “People Love Dead Jews.” The author, prizewinning novelist Dara Horn, successfully proves the dehumanization embedded in the too-easy reverence for past Jewish deaths by the same people – progressive Americans included – who have very little respect and still discriminate against Jewish lives unfolding in the present. This is a book every student and every teacher should read.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Clay Tobias

The recent push to raise the minimum wage to $20 an hour is an idiotic, shortsighted policy that ultimately harms the very individuals it purports to help. While the intention might be to uplift low-income workers, the reality is different. Such a drastic increase in the minimum wage, driven by political motives to “buy” votes rather than economic prudence, creates a ripple effect of negative consequences. Small business owners and franchisees are burdened with higher operating costs. They are left with no choice but to increase prices, reduce work hours, or invest in automation to offset these expenses. As evidenced in California, where the minimum wage hike has led to a 7% rise in fast-food prices and a shift towards self-serve kiosks, the repercussions are tangible and detrimental. Moreover, inflationary pressures exacerbate the cost of living, disproportionately affecting low-income households. Ultimately, such arbitrary wage mandates stifle job creation, hinder economic growth, and perpetuate a cycle of dependence rather than fostering sustainable prosperity.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by John J. McKillop

The term “Homeless Industrial Complex” sheds light on a troubling reality: the entrenchment of vested financial interests in perpetuating homelessness rather than solving it. Despite substantial state funding to address this crisis, California’s struggle persists. Governor Gavin Newsom’s call for increased oversight reflects mounting frustration with the lack of tangible results. The complexity arises when stakeholders benefit from the perpetuation of homelessness. Service providers, contractors, and even some local governments may prioritize maintaining the status quo over genuine solutions. For them, homelessness represents a lucrative business opportunity rather than a humanitarian issue. Newsom’s assertion that he’s no longer willing to “fund failure” echoes the sentiment felt by many. Accountability becomes paramount in this context, with funding contingent upon measurable outcomes. Without such intense scrutiny, the cycle of homelessness persists, and those profiting from it continue to do so at the expense of the marginalized. To truly combat homelessness, we must confront and dismantle this “Homeless Industrial Complex.” After all, as Dr. Phil would say: “How’s that working out for you?”

It’s nauseating when extreme “woke” leftist thugs shout down anyone who disagrees, calling them awful names like “haters” or “racists.” They’re the ones spreading hate, not the other way around. Their tactic is to scare people into keeping quiet. But that’s not fair or right. We should be able to talk about different opinions without being bullied. Everyone deserves to be heard and respected, even if we disagree. Listening to each other and having honest conversations is essential instead of trying to shut people down. That’s how we learn and grow as a society. Something our “woke” friends seem not only to have no interest in but are intent on destroying.

Love & Salt

Love & Salt in Manhattan Beach boasts popularity downtown, but its crowded, thunderous atmosphere eclipses the dining experience. While the food is undeniably good, the service lags and the prices soar. The tight arrangement of dining tables suffocates any potential for a relaxed atmosphere. Despite the culinary delights, the ambiance suffers from the very cramped quarters and sluggish service. The menu offers tantalizing options, but the execution falls a bit short compared to the premium prices. Love & Salt isn’t on the top of my list in a city brimming with culinary gems.

Can misplaced compassion have destructive consequences? Last week on jury duty in Inglewood, I went to Wienerschnitzel for a hot dog. The clerk said, that’s $5.23. After gulping, I responded … the sign says $3.49. You wanted beef … that’s extra. The hot dog itself was a fraction of the size you’d get at home and over half the bun was loaded with relish and onion … soggy and unappealing. Needless to say, that’s my last Wienerschnitzel hot dog. The recent minimum wage mandate increase of 25% is having cataclysmic consequences in our local economy. Foster Freeze has shut down. Twelve hundred lost their delivery jobs at Pizza Hut. And impersonal kiosks are everywhere now. Additionally, the inflationary pressure on countless jobs already paying $20 an hour will severely impact the prices we pay everywhere. Our uber progressive California legislature was focused on making an entry level, low skill job a living wage job. But who really suffers? The poor and marginalized. I’m already being mindful of every food dollar I spend outside the home.

Burglary in North Manhattan Beach. There was a robbery near Highland and 34th St on Monday at 7 p.m. It was still light out, and the thugs acted as if they belonged there. Because neighbors had seen others going in and out of this house, they did not think to call the police. It is believed that this house was possibly targeted. Thugs are getting more brazen – if you see something … say something – don’t assume it’s ok!

Attending a Dodger game feels more like enduring an ordeal than enjoying a leisurely afternoon. The agony begins with the hassle of parking, a seemingly never-ending quest for a spot amidst congested lots. Oh, yeah, by the way, parking ain’t free. Once inside, the sticker shock sets in as fans are met with exorbitant prices for everything from tickets to concessions. And if that weren’t enough, the frustration of navigating through traffic to and from the stadium only adds to the misery. What should be a thrilling experience becomes clouded by stress and inconvenience. Despite the allure of cheering on one’s team, the overwhelming negatives can overshadow the joy of the game itself. Dodger fans may question whether the hassle is worth the payoff in the end.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Mark Burton (Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

The City owns Metlox Plaza, and they contract with Tolkien to manage it. As we all know, the Metlox Plaza escalators are notorious for never working. Here’s why. The City installed “indoor” escalators when they should have installed outdoor escalators. When the rain pours in, it rusts and ruins all the mechanical equipment and parts. The solution is to install new outdoor escalators. Instead, the City has repeatedly made escalator repairs, which have never resulted in the escalators being fully operational. It’s kind of like a cat chasing its tail. I guess we can chalk it up to “good enough for government work?” But, not good enough for our residents.

In the political realm, the distinctions between liberals and conservatives often manifest in mutual misperceptions. Conservatives, anchored in tradition, often view liberals as naïve and even foolish due to their embrace of progressive ideals. Meanwhile, liberals perceive conservatives as evil, selfish, and uncaring, primarily due to resistance to social welfare and emphasis on personal responsibility.

MANHATTAN BEACH CITY MANAGER RETIRES:
Bruce Moe Retires As Manhattan Beach City Manager After 35 Years

City Manager Bruce Moe retired from Manhattan Beach after 35 years at Thursday night’s Council meeting. Future private sessions, such as City Council sessions, will consider his succession. City Manager Moe joined Manhattan Beach in 1989 as the General Services Supervisor for buying and warehouse operations. He became Finance Director in 1998, handled the City’s finances through the Great Recession, and worked with credit rating agencies to secure Triple-A bond ratings. Moe was appointed the city manager for six years in 2018. As City Manager, Moe led Manhattan Beach through the COVID-19 epidemic, the restoration of Fire Station #2, and one of the most significant projects in City history, the replacement of Peck Reservoir. His dedication, ethics, and hard work have gained him the respect of colleagues, government authorities, and locals.

MB WEEKLY:
EXCLUSIVE READER QUESTION
TO MB MAYOR JOE FRANKLIN

Dear Mayor: ARE YOU PLEASED WITH THE NUMBER OF CITATIONS THE POLICE DEPARTMENT GIVES OUT TO THE COUNTLESS E-BIKE RIDERS WHO BREAK NUMEROUS RULES AND LAWS IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA?
A: Not every E-bike stop results in a citation being issued. MBPD endeavors to educate E-bike riders of E-bike safety and rules of the road with training conducted in the schools. To date over 6,000 MBUSD and American Martyr students have received extensive E-bike training at school assemblies conducted by MBPD School Resource Officers (SRO’s). Additional training is provided at the Hometown Fair weekend and Junior Guards. Local bike shops have also committed to providing enhanced training for families who purchase E-bikes. When MBPD officers stop an E-bike rider (or regular bike rider) they have discretion to issue a warning or a ticket. It’s understandable residents see E-bike infractions go unpunished – our PD cannot be everywhere at once. Residents can report unsafe E-Bikers by calling the MBPD Dispatch number 310-545-4566. The Police Chief gives a monthly update on the number of E-bike citations at City Council meetings. In addition, residents can do their part by praising good behavior when they see it. Every little bit helps.

Dear Mayor: WHY DID YOU (AND DAVID LESSER) OPPOSE THE FUN SHARK MURAL?
A: I believe we have enough murals about town without having to add more like the shark mural. Our city is blessed with a natural beauty, accented by stunning sunsets (and sunrises if you are up early enough), parks, a wide beach and beautiful ocean. Persistent murals detract from such beauty. I’ve rarely, if ever, had someone say to me the reason they visited (or moved to) Manhattan Beach was we had great murals. They come for the beach, the ocean and the parks. There may be some of our murals which are whimsical or thought provoking. But I found none of these qualities in the shark mural.

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:

71% Are Sick of Pronouns – Public Weary of Political Correctness “B.S.”

In a recent survey conducted by the MB Weekly, an overwhelming majority, 71% of respondents, expressed frustration with the increasing sensitivity around gender pronouns. Many perceive it as excessive political correctness, dubbing it “B.S.” that inhibits everyday communication. Speaking anonymously, one prominent local business owner highlighted the situation’s absurdity. “I don’t care if you’re of any gender. Doesn’t bother me,” they stated candidly. “But damn, why does everyone get all defensive and cussing me out if I say the wrong damn pronouns!” The frustration extends to professional settings, with concerns about its impact on hiring practices. “I see it on a resume and throw it in the garbage as fast as I can!” another business owner added, revealing the potential consequences of such hypersensitivity. “Radicals have created a new world of utter nonsense and I am not buying it,” said Stella G., a longtime Manhattan Beach resident.

A young man was roaming Manhattan Beach for a few weeks with all his belongings in a suitcase and a cooler. We had offered housing and services. Finally, scared, hungry, and cold, he trusted us enough to accept housing, and we placed him there the same day! He was desperate for glasses. MBSAFE could pay for the exam and glasses (his prescription was so severe he could barely see to sign his rental agreement). He is on the path to a more prosperous life thanks to donations made to MBSAFE by generous community members. A HAND UP IS NOT A HANDOUT

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Aaron Ganz

CEO at GANZ Media

Q: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO LOCATE YOUR MEDIA BUSINESS IN THE SOUTH BAY?
A: After spending several decades enduring the scorching heat of the San Fernando Valley, I had the pleasure of meeting my now wife who was working in the South Bay. So you could say that having a beach in my backyard, weather 30 degrees cooler, and a beautiful woman, all had a hand in my decision to work here.

Q: WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING YOUR COMPANY AFTER COVID?
A: During the first few months of COVID, most of my business had dried up. At the four months in, businesses realized they had to adapt to the changing world, and with the increased need for Digital Marketing, the opportunities exploded for my business, and have not stopped since.

Q: WHAT WAS YOUR TRAINING FOR BEGINNING A MEDIA COMPANY?
A: While in college, based purely on a love of computers and technology, I was hired in a marketing position for a software company. I was privileged to have an entrepreneurial boss who took a chance on me and encouraged me to grow, learn, and teach myself the skills I needed for the position. Years later, I took a position at Ticketmaster doing email marketing. At that time, they were sending out 1.4 billion emails per year. Working for a Fortune 500 company with a solid team helped expand and refine my skills while securing a professional, comprehensive understanding of the digital marketing space. Based on that foundation, GANZ Media was born.

Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
A: I was born in Hollywood, California, and came out three and a half months early, as I had things I wanted to do.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: My sign is a Pisces, which is said to have aspects of all the other 11 players in the Zodiac. So we get along with everyone.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: My favorite movie is the Shawshank Redemption. I was inspired by the main character Andy Dufresne (played by Tim Robbins), his persistence in overcoming impossible odds, and learning to get by with the help of a friend.

Q: HOW CAN PEOPLE GET MORE INFORMATION ON YOUR COMPANY?
A: To find out more about GANZ Media and the services we offer, including web design, graphic design, social media, and email campaigns for small and medium-sized businesses, visit:

Two Manhattan Beach Pharmacies, Two Burglaries:

In the parking lots of two CVS shops in Manhattan Beach, police responded to two cries for help on March 30. After withdrawing cash from her bank, a lady went to the CVS on Sepulveda 2900 and discovered her passenger side glass damaged. The bank envelope with the money was stolen from the vehicle’s center console. MBPD responded to a CVS report at 1570 Rosecrans Avenue that day. A retail thief was testing parking lot car door handles to determine whether they were open. A struggle led to minor injuries to the suspect and two cops as they tried to apprehend him. MBPD responded. Officers found the unhoused guy with a rock, not a weapon. A mental health evaluation was given to the homeless person. MBPD received 44 criminal complaints from March 28 to April 4, including three assaults, three auto thefts, four thefts, two vehicle burglaries, and one home burglary.

LOVE in Manhattan Beach:

A reader told us there was recently an epic beach marriage proposal in front of our iconic Manhattan Beach Pier. Famous local photographer Pete Halvorsen (by sheer chance) captured the proposal unbeknownst to the mystery couple. It was no ordinary day on the beach. Winds were topping 30 mph and the proposal took place on the same day as the solar eclipse. Since Halvorsen didn’t have time to let the romantic couple know he captured their special moment, he is trying to make his video viral to find them. Do you know this couple? Let us at MB Weekly know … so we can find out their story and share their love with our readers. You can view the video on both Peter Halvorsen and the Love Driven Book Series Instagram accounts.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Lucia La Rosa (Manhattan Beach)

In this time of spring and renewal, in this time of Passover, I do pray that God might deliver Israel from its enemies as it has happened in the past at Passover, with Daniel, with Esther, and with the smite of 185,000 Assyrian soldiers on the first night of Passover and the end of their siege of Jerusalem. Build yourself in hope because when your friends betray you, God is faithful to Israel.

Video surveillance footage captured five suspects involved in a smash-and-grab robbery at a Manhattan Beach jewelry store on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Gardena Police officers later arrested one suspect, and authorities continue their search to identify and arrest the other four suspects. Critics continue to vent frustration on the lack of arrests, though the entire crime was captured on video. “Very, very frustrating!” said one neighboring merchant. “And the worst part, even if arrested, is that nothing much will happen to them.”
