SAFETY • CITY • CRIME • WOKE

** I am proud to endorse Nathan Hochman for District Attorney. I have spoken with him in person. He supports CMB and all cities in LA County to prosecute misdemeanors! I endorsed him and hope we can restore actual consequences for lawbreakers across the county. —- Councilman Richard Montgomery (Manhattan Beach)

** My dissatisfaction and opposition to the current District Attorney and the job he’s done (or rather failed to do) is a matter of record as a Councilmember. As endorsements go, however, as a candidate for Judge for seat 39 on the LA Superior Court, I’m not allowed to endorse any candidates in any political race according to the judicial campaign rules set forth by the Judicial Council of California as doing so may imply bias. —- Councilman Steve Napolitano (Manhattan Beach)

** This past Friday at Nordstrom at around 5 p.m. I was going up the escalator to the second floor, and after reaching the top, three teenagers stopped and blocked me from going further onto the second floor. The male teen nudged the young teen girl and whispered something. She turned to me, leaned close, and tried to say something. From working at a high school in Redondo Beach, I knew they were up to no good. So I told her before she could say one word, “Hey girl, why are you in my face?” She repeated what I said, then in another different tone of voice, I repeated, “Girl, why are you in my face?” in an assertive and calm voice. She backed off, and the other two opened the path at the top of the escalator so I could move on. I notified the manager of the store, and she said the same threesome was causing a disturbance on the first floor. Later, another manager stated, “They were caught by Torrance police for grab and go at other stores outside of Nordstrom.” Another clerk at Nordstrom said these things happen all the time, everywhere in the mall. Be alert and careful, everyone. —- Miye Nakamura (Torrance)

MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

CURRENTLY READING

** I’m currently reading “Ben Bernanke’s Fed” by Ethan Harris. This book isn’t likely to be on anyone’s “can’t wait to read” list. However, it should be. Why? The Fed significantly impacts our lives, given its dual mandate of keeping inflation low and employment high. This is not easy to do as too much pushing in either direction can worsen the situation. Pushing too long or not long enough can make things worse or ineffective. The author likens the Fed’s job to a tugboat trying to steer a container ship in stormy waters. While I haven’t gotten to any edge-of-your-seat parts yet, it could not hurt to understand better the agency that can significantly impact your financial life. —- Phil Cook, Financial Advisor (Manhattan Beach)

** Arnold Kling, an economist, wrote a book a decade ago that helped explain the main difference between progressives and conservatives. According to Kling, progressives perceive the world as a conflict between oppressor and oppressed and aid the persecuted. Conservatives prefer civilization over barbarism, order above chaos, and defend civilization. —- Darcy O. (Manhattan Beach)

MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

METLOX PLAZA BROKEN ESCALATORS

The Perpetually Broken Escalators At Metlox.

** I loved your recent MB Weekly Investigates video! It’s astonishing how easily overlooked hygiene can be in public spaces like escalators. The Metlox handrails serve as a stark reminder of the unseen germs lurking in our daily environment. From bacteria to viruses, these surfaces host a plethora of potential pathogens, easily transferred through touch. The disgust and revulsion we feel upon realizing the extent of contamination are entirely justified. Such awareness prompts a necessary change in behavior, like your decision to avoid touching escalator handrails altogether. It’s a small but significant step towards personal hygiene and health consciousness. Let’s continue to educate ourselves and others about the importance of cleanliness in public spaces, ensuring a safer and healthier environment for everyone. Thank you, MB Weekly! —- Fran C. (Manhattan Beach)

** While the city is repairing or replacing the escalators, they should install motion or proximity detectors to turn them on and off. We often travel to Europe, and almost all the escalators have these. It means that the escalators only run when someone wants to use them. Most of the time, when I have been to the Metlox Plaza, the escalators are running continuously, whether anyone is there. Another note about European escalators, mainly in the metro stations, is that sometimes there is only one escalator. The motion detectors act as a “first come, first served” sensor. The escalator runs in either direction based on who approached it first. If MB wants to be truly “green,” let’s save some energy on the escalators. —- Terry Watson (Manhattan Beach)

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
Work Satisfaction: 62.7% Of MB Weekly Readers Content With Careers

In a revealing insight into workplace sentiments, MB Weekly’s latest reader poll unveils a striking trend: 62.7% of respondents express satisfaction with their current jobs. This substantial majority signals a positive shift in attitudes toward work, indicating that a significant portion of MB Weekly’s readership finds fulfillment in their professional endeavors. The poll’s findings shed light on factors contributing to this high level of satisfaction, offering valuable insights for employers striving to create conducive work environments.

The Manhattan Council Considers Two Begg Pool Improvement Ideas:

Two Begg Pool makeover proposals were presented to the Manhattan Beach City Council. Option 1 includes the renovation of the existing structures to update the outdated pool complex, maintaining its small 25-yard pool. Option 2 includes the construction of a new building, a new 35-meter (varying from 3.5’ to 8’ deep) pool, and a new 25-yard recreational pool (varying from 3.5’ to 4.5’ deep) along with associated sitework. This option also includes a new support building for pool equipment and storage. Construction is anticipated to be 18 months, according to the report. The first idea cost about $28 million, the second about $40 million. Because of the high price tag, Council approved to accept doing a pool poll of other options, and to find out the cost to keep the pool operating safely in the meantime for the next two to three years with needed repairs.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Cathy Hobart

(Friend of MB Safe)

Q: WHEN DID YOU FIRST ARRIVE IN MANHATTAN BEACH, AND WHY?
A: I moved to Manhattan Beach when I got married in 2000.

Q: WHAT DREW YOU TO BECOME ACTIVE IN MB SAFE?
A: When I first heard about MB SAFE, I was very skeptical. The more I learned, the more impressed I was with the four amazing women who created this organization. They are focused on helping people struggling with homelessness by connecting them to services and housing. They do not believe we should leave people on the streets. Keeping the community safe is also their priority. MB SAFE has its own caseworker, Rita Crabtree-Kampe, who helps coordinate all the efforts currently happening in our community. I have been searching LA County for more groups/organizations similar to MB SAFE but have only found a few. Most cities do not have a group like MB SAFE because it takes a lot of time and commitment to successfully create and maintain this type of organization. I met with a group of caseworkers here in the Beach Cities who said they wished every city had a group like MB SAFE. It would help them get people off the streets more quickly by filling the gaps that the government doesn’t meet.

Q: WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM WORKING WITH MB SAFE?
A: The homeless issue is complicated. We have a team that cares about people struggling and our community. The situation in California would be completely different if every community had an organization like MB SAFE.

Q: HOW CAN READERS HELP MB SAFE?
A: This nonprofit directly helps people in our community. Here are a few ways that readers can help MB SAFE…

  1. Donate!! Their Venmo is @Mbsafe90266donate. If you care about people who are struggling with homelessness and want to help get them off the streets immediately, donate to MB SAFE. They directly help the people in our community.
  2. Spread the word about this organization with other residents, local businesses, and neighboring communities. The majority of MB Residents have no idea that this organization exists or what they do. The website is www.mbsafe.org
  3. Host a roundtable discussion in your home and have MB SAFE help answer questions and share ideas on how to help with the homeless situation. If anyone would like to host one of these discussions, email… Mbsafe@outlook.com

Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
A: Ventura, California.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: Taurus.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: I love movies! Too many to count. Favorite holiday movies… Elf & Love Actually.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: Strand House, Mangiamo, Petros, Izaka-Ya.

May Makeover For Manhattan Beach Concrete:

The Citywide Concrete Repairs Project will affect Manhattan Beach pathways during May. Pathways include along 6th Street and 7th Place between Highland Avenue and Valley Drive, and the section of The Strand alongside the staircase at 21st Street that was washed out by rain and address water that is ponding below the Sepulveda Bridge. Weekday construction will occur from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. “Access to parking and driveways may be restricted intermittently during this time, and pedestrian pathway width will be reduced,” the city said in a release.

Joe Franklin

(Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

Q: WHAT IS YOUR BEST HABIT, AND WHAT IS YOUR WORST ONE?
A: Best: Fairly regular exercise / Worst: Procrastinate about exercising.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST INDULGENCE?
A: Time with our kids and grandkids.

Q: WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE CREATIVELY STUCK?
A: Run on the beach. That’s where and when I get some good ideas.

Q: HOW DO YOU EXERCISE?
A: Biking on the beach bike path; running on the soft sand; lifting weights with my friends.

Q: HOW DO YOU UNPLUG?
A: See above.

Q: IS THERE A BOOK YOU’D RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE?
A: “Rich Dad-Poor Dad” Teaches financial literacy.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
A: Get a mentor or several mentors. You can benefit greatly from their perspectives and life lessons.

Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PODCAST?
A: Not much time to listen to them. It’s on my list to explore them more.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR MANTRA?
A: It’s a bit silly but I made this up for me when I was on long bike rides (usually going up hills at the end of a century ride) and have used it for my kids and now my grandkids when we are walking, running or riding bikes up hills: We LOVE hills, they make us STRONGER. We LOVE hills, we want them LONGER. It teaches how you get strong by stretching yourself and not to give up because you are stronger than you think.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW:
by Darby Winston
Joey Restaurant Manhattan Village

The cheeseburger at Joey restaurant in Manhattan Village, Manhattan Beach, is a delightful surprise in a sea of overpriced options. Priced at $20, it’s a refreshing deviation from the norm as it lives up to its value. The burger is a symphony of flavors, with juicy, perfectly cooked beef nestled between layers of cheese, ripe tomatoes, pickles and a toasted bun that adds just the right amount of crunch. I found each bite a journey of satisfaction, leaving you craving more. Joey’s cheeseburger is not just a meal; it’s an experience worth savoring, making every penny well spent.

You will see the word TEP in the image above. This stands for the Teacher Education Program at UCLA Center X. They have an education program for upcoming ethnic studies teachers. UCLA Center X also has professional development, where MBUSD teachers have received anti-bias (DEI) training. Center X is also where the California History-Social Science project is housed. This is a state resource whose hub is in UC Davis. They have outposts at UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Berkeley, Santa Cruz, and Irvine. They provide training for ethnic studies teachers and a line ES curriculum for all k-12 teachers (the public can access it, too). Cathey Graves, MBUSB board member, said that Costas ethnic studies committee leaders attended a UC Berkeley teacher training session last summer. … what are these teachers told? What is the position of Israel?

Friendship Campus In Redondo Beach Marks Construction Milestone:

Recently, the Friendship Foundation celebrated halfway through construction on its state-of-the-art campus, which will train and place neuro-divergent people. The 62,000-square-foot complex on more than three acres in Redondo Beach received its last steel beam in a “Topping Off” ceremony. Celebration attendees signed the beam beforehand. New campus development is anticipated to conclude in autumn 2025, and funding is nearly complete. Executive Director Yossi Mintz said the organization has received $50 million of the $55 million required to create the new campus. At the May celebration with local leaders and scores of supporters, Mintz said everyone’s participation is important because they don’t want to take any financing or debt. “We want to spend the money on the kids and young adults. That is our objective and commitment.” The Friendship Campus will teach neuro-divergent kids and young adults how to live independently in their communities. Digital media, visual arts, and a Culinary Arts Center will prepare students for hospitality and culinary jobs. Student financial literacy and mentoring will be stressed.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Evelyn B. (A Manhattan Beach Business Owner)

As a conscientious business owner, my recent encounter with the Labor Board in downtown L.A. was nothing short of alarming. The experience resembled a biased kangaroo court, leaving me feeling unjustly vilified. It’s baffling how an employee can effortlessly recall details of alleged overtime, missed lunches, or breaks spanning years without a shred of tangible evidence. The absence of notes, records, or time-clock documentation makes these claims akin to creative fiction. Despite lacking substantiation, such allegations are disturbingly legitimized by the biased anti-employer system. This ordeal evoked parallels to the injustices faced by minorities in the segregated South of the 1950s. The discrepancy between the burden of proof placed on employers versus employees is stark and unjust. It underscores the dire need for a fair and balanced approach to resolving labor disputes, one that respects the rights of both parties and upholds the principles of honesty and integrity.

by L.H. (Manhattan Beach)

Fuming with rage over my husband’s incessant demand for skimpier outfits, I’m seething at the audacity. I’ve always dressed to feel good, not to be some eye candy. Leggings? Sure, but with a damn long top – common sense, right? Yet, he’s pushing for this skin-baring spectacle. I’m no prude, but I won’t be his walking mannequin. His “guy instinct” claim is infuriating. I tried, but it’s just uncomfortable not empowering. My wardrobe isn’t up for debate, and I won’t bow to this pressure. It’s my body, my choice and his relentless badgering is a disrespectful affront to my utonomy.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia (El Segundo)

The ideological chasm between liberals and conservatives in Manhattan Beach is often portrayed starkly.

CONSERVATIVES GENERALLY PERCEIVE LIBERALS AS NAIVE IDEALISTS, WHILE LIBERALS GENERALLY VIEW CONSERVATIVES AS EVIL, SELFISH, AND LACKING COMPASSION.

Conservatives generally perceive liberals as naive idealists, while liberals generally view conservatives as evil, selfish, and lacking compassion. This divide is not merely a clash of political perspectives but values and worldviews. Liberals prioritize empathy and social justice, often relying on emotional appeals to drive their arguments. Conversely, conservatives usually emphasize the importance of tradition, personal responsibility, and logical reasoning to guide policy decisions. Both liberals and conservatives are driven by a desire to create a better society, albeit through different means and interpretations of what constitutes progress. All this said, it is worth remembering that “the path to Hell is paved with good intention.”

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
Tip Tension: Manhattan Beach Residents Overspending On Tipping

In a recent survey conducted by MB Weekly, it has been discovered that residents of Manhattan Beach are feeling the pinch of “tipflation,” spending nearly $500 a year more than they’d prefer on gratuities. The poll, which gathered responses from MB Weekly readers, sheds light on the discomfort and pressure many feel when faced with tipping options. On average, respondents admitted to reluctantly parting with $37.80 per month due to social expectations or awkwardness, tallying up to a staggering $453.60 annually in guilt-driven gratuities. A significant portion (26%) confessed to feeling consistently compelled to overtip.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Ranee Weselak

Parking Dilemma: My husband and I have lived in MB for a year, and our rental house only has one parking garage spot. My husband has to try to find street parking daily near 16th and Highland. This has been a nightmare, especially about weekends and road closures. Over the year, we have accumulated over $700 in tkts (I never had a ticket before living here) cause sometimes there’s nowhere to park, he’s had to resort to parking at city hall, or he’s not out early enough to move the car when he works from home. We are likely moving because of this, but seeing if others have the same issue or have any pointers on where to park. I wish MB had residential street parking passes as Hermosa Beach does. This has been an enormous deterrent to us wanting to stay here. *Our moving truck even got a ticket as we were moving in cause we lived on a pedestrian street and had to move in through the front door while parked at the bottom of the street. Great welcome.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW:
by Darby Winston
Lido Di Manhattan Ristorante & Bar

I recently dined at Lido Di Manhattan Ristorante & Bar, and unfortunately, it fell way short of expectations. The ambiance felt as tired as a losing sports team, lacking vibrancy or charm. Service was practically non-existent, with a warmth that would make Frigidaire proud, leaving me feeling neglected and frustrated throughout the meal. While I hoped the food would redeem the experience, it only added to the disappointment. The Chicken Piccata, a classic Italian dish, failed to impress, leaving me underwhelmed with its lackluster flavor and presentation. Overall, Lido Di Manhattan Ristorante & Bar left much to be desired. It’s hard to justify a return visit with mediocre food and a noticeable absence of attentive service. If they want to stay in the game, they’ll need to step up their game significantly.

At Beachlife, Sting Rocks Hits:

Sting went effortlessly onto the stage at BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach with his guitar strapped over his broad shoulders, and he looked very fit in a tight T-shirt and white pants. The crowd hardly noticed the former Police leader until he launched his enormous hit-filled concert with “Message in a Bottle,” a beach-loving fan favorite. “Just a castaway, an island lost at sea, another lonely day with no one here but me,” the 72-year-old icon sang as the throng sang along. The last day of the Festival was cancelled due to high winds.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Dave H. (Manhattan Beach)

Dear MB Weekly readers, the scenario of my troubled daughter-in-law Meadow’s impending attendance at her cousin’s wedding is a microcosm of societal norms and expectations clashing with individual expression and autonomy. Meadow’s embodiment of the hippie lifestyle, characterized by nonconformity and opposition to established standards, challenges the traditionalism embodied by her cousin in the business world. The tension between Meadow’s unconventional appearance and her cousin’s concerns are a real family problem. Trust me. Meadow’s tattoos, piercings, and unshaven underarms represent a departure from conventional beauty standards, prompting apprehension about her potential to disrupt the wedding’s atmosphere. Urrgh! Life is difficult.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia (El Segundo)

The schism between liberals and conservatives often manifests in contrasting perceptions and modes of communication. Conservatives tend to view liberals as overly idealistic and impractical, dismissing their policies as naive and foolish. This sentiment is exemplified in the critiques of conservative commentators such as Ben Shapiro, who frequently deride liberal initiatives as detached from reality. Conversely, liberals often perceive conservatives as morally bankrupt, evil, and self-serving, attributing their policy stances to greed, callousness, and bigotry. This perspective is echoed in the rhetoric of liberal activists like Noam Chomsky, who condemn conservative policies as emblematic of systemic injustice. Additionally, the assertion that conservatives “think and speak” while liberals “feel and yell” underscores broader stereotypes about communication styles within each camp. To disagree with a conservative is then to be invited for a beer. To disagree with a liberal is to be called (loudly) a “Hitler-loving, racist hater!”
