2024 THE YEAR IN REVIEW:
MANHATTAN BEACH – A YEAR OF CALM

In an era dominated by political clashes and divisive rhetoric, Manhattan Beach stood out in 2024 as an oasis of collaboration. Even amidst a national election year, the city’s local politics were marked by an unusual sense of unity. Six candidates vied for three City Council seats, not with attacks, but with mutual admiration, transforming forums into displays of camaraderie. Similarly, the Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board election was strikingly tranquil, with only one newcomer stepping forward, resulting in an uncontested race. The community also rallied around fiscal initiatives, approving a Stormwater fee hike, a sales tax increase, a parcel tax, and a $200 million school bond without organized opposition. With veteran leaders stepping aside and new ones emerging, 2024 also saw three Mustang alumni shine as Olympians.

Glamour, Grit, And Glitter – Manhattan Beach’s Tanner Adell Is Country Music’s Bold New Voice:

Tanner Adell isn’t here to fit the mold – she’s here to shatter it. Tanner is redefining what a country artist can be with a fearless attitude and a pop-infused country sound. Her signature style – sequins, bright colors, and unapologetic sparkle – draws in listeners who never thought they’d love country music. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, and raised in Manhattan Beach, California, Tanner’s life perfectly contrasts urban cool and rural roots. Summers spent in Star Valley, Wyoming, grounded her in small-town country life, while the California coast infused her sound with pop flair. This dynamic upbringing fuels her genre-bending music, where tradition meets modern energy.

Several Iconic Downtown Businesses Close At Once:

Downtown Manhattan Beach is undergoing a dramatic transformation as several beloved businesses shutter their doors, leaving the community wondering about the future of their vibrant commercial hub. Adding to the uncertainty, rumors are swirling that several prominent restaurants are openly up for sale.

  • Pitfire Pizza: After serving the community for over a decade, Pitfire Pizza closed on December 24. According to the owner, the closure wasn’t due to business struggles but a landlord’s decision to lease the space to Great White, an up-and-coming casual café with other locations across Los Angeles. Construction on the new eatery is set to begin soon.
  • Manhattan Grocery: Manhattan Grocery, a neighborhood staple for 21 years, closed. Manhattan Meats will expand into the vacated space, signaling a shift in local retail dynamics.
  • Presotea: Presotea, a Taiwanese boba tea spot, closed, citing gratitude for the relationships built with customers.
  • Lemonade: The cafeteria-style eatery Lemonade has also ceased operations, with its space now available for lease.

Amid these several closures, whispers of high-profile restaurant sales signal that even some of the area’s most enduring businesses may be rethinking their future. As downtown Manhattan Beach evolves, residents and visitors alike are left to speculate about what’s next for this iconic beachside community.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Darla OReilly

My daughter was shopping at Little Vons in downtown Manhattan Beach on Christmas Eve and walked outside to the parking lot at 5:45 pm to find the fender of her car ripped off. I’m trying to find the woman who witnessed it and had reported it to Vons. When it happened, a woman who witnessed it reported to a Vons employee that she had seen a Vons delivery truck hit my daughter’s car. Still, Vons did not collect the witness’ contact information, and the woman left without leaving a note. I hope to find the woman who witnessed Von’s truck that hit the car. The incident was reported to the police, but there were no cameras on the east side of the building.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Paul Wafer

MB had multiple police officers earning over $400,000 in salary and benefits. I can’t say which officer they were, but I am pretty sure the one who announced his retirement this week is among them. I started looking at the MB budget for the city to assess some things for the public art project I am working on, but once I started looking, I found many other things that may take priority. I am working on a Table to show the increase in employee count salary and benefit expenses. This fiscal year is budgeted for $67.3 million, compared to $54.7 in 2022, and this year budgeted for 353 employees compared to 305 in 2022.

Bird Flu Information From MBPD:

(Update from L.A. County: December 23, 2024: Public Health Confirms Human H5 Bird Flu Case in L.A. County)

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1, or “bird flu,” has been circulating in wild birds in Europe since the fall of 2020. The virus was first detected in California in July 2022. Through the One Health project, Department of Public Health began coordinating with the City of Manhattan Beach Animal Control Division to assist with regional surveillance efforts and prepared staff at parks, animal shelters and regional wildlife rehabilitation centers to quickly identify sick birds, minimize public exposures, and support testing efforts. An increase in H5N1 is expected from October through February based on migratory patterns of affected wild animals. In response, Manhattan Beach Animal Control Officers have performed increased surveillance and protective measures.

This year, two confirmed cases of H5N1 have originated in birds found at the waterline in Manhattan Beach. In addition to surveillance and testing of wild animals, the Animal Control team remains vigilant in enforcing LA County laws restricting dogs from the beach to reduce the chance of the virus spreading. For more information regarding symptoms, treatment facilities, and One Health In Action, safety bulletins are posted on the CDC and DPH websites.

WHY A TRIBUTE TO STEVE NAPOLITANO:

From the Editors of MB Weekly

Few public servants embody the spirit of Manhattan Beach more profoundly than Steve Napolitano. His lifelong dedication to this community is a rare blend of passion, integrity, and steadfast leadership. Steve’s story is one of perseverance and commitment. Born and raised in Manhattan Beach, he attended local public schools, worked as a janitor to support himself through Loyola Marymount University, and taught in inner-city schools while earning his law degree. These experiences grounded him and deepened his connection to the values of hard work and fairness.

Serving as the youngest-ever elected official in Manhattan Beach and now its longest-serving Mayor and City Councilmember, Steve has always placed public safety as his top priority. Under his leadership, initiatives that enhance quality of life, protect the environment, and support seniors and children have come to fruition. His service is more than a job – it’s a calling.

Steve’s roots run deep, and his love for this city is evident in his policies and personal life. He is raising his children blocks from where he grew up, instilling the same values guiding his remarkable career.

We at MB Weekly offer this tribute to Steve Napolitano for his accomplishments, character, and unwavering dedication he brings to Manhattan Beach. Our community is better, safer, and stronger because of him.

MB WEEKLY – TRIBUTE:

Steve Napolitano: Like father like son.

A TRIBUTE TO STEVE NAPOLITANO:

** Thank you Councilmember Napolitano for your distinguished service on the Manhattan Beach City Council! Job well done! – With over 30 years of public service on our MB City Council, the Honorable Steve Napolitano has earned our appreciation and respect for his dedication and love for our community. In recent years, Steve has been the undisputed leader on City Council, noted for his wry wit and down to earth common sense. Having a 35 year career of public service to a city and its residents, I can say with certainty that Steve was one of the most experienced and knowledgeable City Councilmembers in our City’s history and, in fact, one of the most experienced and knowledgeable in Southern California. Since Steve grew up in Manhattan Beach and lived his entire life in Manhattan Beach, he had a unique perspective on what made our community great. It was in Steve’s DNA. Clearly, Steve was one of our community’s “favorite sons”. I don’t know who will step on the next Council as a leader but I do know that Steve’s leaving our City Council will leave a void. Steve’s impact was profound and lasting. I know that Steve’s next chapter will be in public service, it’s in his blood, it’s who he is. I, and many other residents, wish him the very best. —- Mark Burton (Former Manhattan Beach Mayor)

** The city was incredibly fortunate to have Steve Napolitano on the City Council during such challenging times. The pandemic was especially tough on restaurants and businesses, and without Steve’s leadership, my businesses would not have not faired as well as they did. Thank you, Steve, for everything you’ve done to support and enrich our beautiful Manhattan Beach! —- Michael Zislis (Prominent Hotel and Restaurant Owner)

MB WEEKLY – TRIBUTE:

Steve Napolitano: Younger years.

A TRIBUTE TO STEVE NAPOLITANO:

** Steve has been a fixture of Manhattan Beach for so long, it is hard to imagine him doing or being anything or anywhere else. From the beach volleyball courts to the City Council chambers Steve has been a tireless public servant to the good people of Manhattan Beach for what seems like forever! Steve has always been a stand up guy. Fair and honorable are two of the many words describing public servants who are also statespersons. Steve Napolitano has always been fair and honorable. In my 72 years here in Manhattan Beach, I have seen many different city councils. Steve Napolitano’s years of service rank him within the top group of elected officials to serve our city. With a little more free time, I hope to see you at the Shellback Tavern more often my friend. —- Bob Beverly (Shellback Tavern)

** I’ve always admired Steve’s brand of humor. Whenever he is making a presentation, he slyly sneaks in a humorous remark that it takes you a moment to absorb. He also thinks up these remarks during spontaneous discussions. I hope wherever life leads him, he can continue to use his sense of humor. —- Lynne Gross (Roundhouse Aquarium Board Member)

MB WEEKLY – TRIBUTE:

Steve Napolitano: Group events.

MB WEEKLY – TRIBUTE:

Steve Napolitano: Community events.

A TRIBUTE TO STEVE NAPOLITANO:

** Whenever someone has given decades of service to a community, they leave a mark. As a local realtor, I am often in the position of speaking with clients who are moving to Southern California for the first time. Buyers want to know where to live in Los Angeles. Although the commute to where you work is always going to be a driving factor, finding good schools and a safe place to live is the biggest draw. Steve Napolitano has worked tirelessly to help Manhattan Beach maintain its character. Manhattan Beach is clearly one of the few cities in the greater Los Angeles area where you can state it does have a true sense of community. Having someone local at the helm for so long helps shape our city into what it is – a place where tradition and progress coexist harmoniously. Steve’s leadership has preserved our small-town charm while guiding us through complex challenges with integrity, compassion, and dedication. His vision and commitment have made Manhattan Beach a place we are proud to call home, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all. Thank you, Steve, for making a difference that will be felt for generations. —- Ed Kaminsky (Manhattan Beach Realtor)

** Many of us at Continental Development Corporation have known and worked with Steve since he first joined the City Council 30 years ago. We have all enjoyed his passion and dedication to Manhattan Beach and strong work ethic for the betterment of the City. Steve has always seen the bigger picture on developments and been supportive of projects that are good for the community. In addition to his years with the City, his position working with Supervisor Don Knabe was also a very positive experience for our Company. Steve will be missed on the Council, but his continued involvement with Manhattan Beach will be evident. We wish him the best in all his future endeavors. —- Richard Lundquist & Senior Staff (Continental Development Corporation)

MB WEEKLY – TRIBUTE:

Steve Napolitano: Public events.

MB WEEKLY – TRIBUTE:

Steve Napolitano: Around the City.

A TRIBUTE TO STEVE NAPOLITANO:

** I’m sorry to see Steve Napolitano leave the Manhattan Beach City Council due to term limits. Steve has done so much for our community to improve our residents’ quality of life and public safety. He’s also been a watchdog for prudent spending of taxpayer dollars and on all budgetary matters. Steve’s exemplary service and dedication was second to none. Steve was my role model when I was on the City Council and especially while I was Mayor. While Steve will be missed on Council, I’m sure he’ll continue to be serving our community in the future. —- Wayne Powell (Former Manhattan Beach Mayor/Councilmember)

** Steve Napolitano has done a great job for Manhattan Beach throughout his years as mayor and councilman. He has been very receptive to citizen input and has helped make our town the great place it is today. Obviously the citizens appreciate what he has done, because even though unfortunately he lost his bid to become a judge in the last election, 82% of Manhattan Beach voters supported him. —- Russ Lesser (Former Manhattan Beach Mayor)

HOW OFTEN DO YOU USE THE MANHATTAN BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY:

** To date, I haven’t used it. However, I do have a library card and one of my upcoming New Year’s Resolutions is to use the library regularly. I like to read, so I’ll be checking out books next year rather than buying them. —- Mark Burton (Former Manhattan Beach Mayor)

** I use my Kindle to read books and newspapers and look up everything else on line. I hear it is great for kids, but I have only been inside once when it first opened. —- Paul Wafer (Manhattan Beach)

** Weekly —- Kate Andersen (Manhattan Beach Accountant)

** I don’t believe I have ever found a reason to use the Library other than to point out it exists to new clients moving to Manhattan Beach. —- Ed Kaminsky (Manhattan Beach Realtor)

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HOMEBUYING TICKS UP DESPITE RISING PRICES. THE AFFECT ON REAL ESTATE IN MANHATTAN BEACH:

** What is interesting about the real estate market is 2024 will go on record as one of the lowest transaction volume in decades. Despite the low number of sales, prices held steady in most markets, including Manhattan Beach, which has shown a slight increase of .4% overall. (Source Trendgraphix Y.O.Y. pricer per sqft) If you look a little closer, new home prices have trended up in most of the areas in Manhattan Beach and some of the older homes that are 20-30 years old didn’t see the same increases. There is currently a higher demand for new or newer homes over the older homes. The supply of new homes remains low the demand is still high enough despite the current interest rate market. If we see mortgage rates dip in the coming months, we could easily a continued jump in demand, which will put upward pressure on values. —- Ed Kaminsky (Realtor)

** The dip in mortgage rates will have a positive effect in real estate for Manhattan Beach. It will help encourage 1st time buyers to engage in the market and offer strong bids for properties. It also helps the residential income market in MB as lower rates will help increase the positive cash flow of these properties. —- Vince Altamura (Realtor)

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Tina Phillips
(Kaminsky Real Estate Group)

Q: WHAT DREW YOU TO REAL ESTATE IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: Definitely my dad, Ed Kaminsky, and watching him go from having nothing, working hard and having great success!

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST COMPLICATED PART OF YOUR JOB POST-COVID?
A: I don’t find the job complicated at all. The best part about what we do is that you just have to change your strategy and flow with the market. We control our success and find solutions for anything complicated.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: My favorite spot is Un Caffe Altamura. The owner/chef is a food genius and extremely creative. She has a well curated menu that changes seasonally. For dinner, it’s definitely Fishing with Dynamite.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: Leo…roar! I’m a fire sign all day long.

Q: WHO WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE DINNER WITH, GEORGE CLOONEY OR ELON MUSK?
A: Can I choose Snoop Dogg instead?

Q: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG REALTORS WHO ARE STARTING?
A: Young realtors should have a mentor and need to learn the basics. You have to put in the work. This is not an easy business but if you can work hard and commit, you will be successful. There are great coaching programs out there as well. I started with the Mike Ferry Organization in 2009 and I’ve had a coach from there since. Without their program, I probably wouldn’t be doing this interview right now.

Manhattan Beach Goes Prime – The Butchery Quality Meats Carves Out New Spot:

The Butchery’s expansion would join its Costa Mesa, Newport Coast, and Del Mar outposts owned by Brian Smith and Robert Hagopian.

Fry’s Site Transformed – A Bold Vision for Manhattan Beach: Big changes are on the horizon for Manhattan Beach! The iconic old Fry’s Electronics site at Rosecrans and Sepulveda is set to be transformed featuring two apartment buildings – rising 10 and 7 stories tall. The proposed development includes 285 apartments, offering a mix of 1, 2, and 3-bedroom options, 57 units will be reserved as affordable housing. Residents can look forward to luxury amenities like a sparkling pool, a state-of-the-art gym, and a rooftop deck for sunset views. Parking with two levels of subterranean spaces. The project is currently in preliminary review and won’t require Planning Commission or City Council approval, meaning it could move forward smoothly. What do you think about this reimagining of the Fry’s site? A bold step forward or too much for Manhattan Beach? Let us know!

The Hook & Plow’s Lobster Sandwich

If you’re searching for the best lobster roll in Manhattan Beach, look no further than Hook & Plow in downtown Manhattan Beach. At $46, their Lobster Roll is a masterpiece worth every penny. Fresh, buttery lobster meat is lightly dressed with mayonnaise, chives, celery, and a hint of lemon, all nestled in a perfectly toasted brioche roll that adds the right amount of crunch. The balance of flavors lets the lobster shine, and every bite is rich and satisfying. Paired with crisp house slaw and golden French fries served alongside a zesty mustard aioli and house-made ketchup, this dish is a complete experience. The quality of ingredients is evident, and Hook & Plow’s commitment to sustainable, local sourcing elevates this classic to something exceptional. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly service make it all the better. This is the lobster roll to beat in Manhattan Beach for a taste of pure coastal bliss.

With a heavy heart, I’m writing this. I went to take my boys to school this morning and saw a dead cat on the sidewalk. My son thought he was sleeping, but unfortunately, he wasn’t. We called Animal Control and picked him up. If this is your cat, I am very sorry. My neighbor might have a Ring to find out what happened possibly.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Mark Burton (Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach)

Complacent Community Is Manhattan Beach – A complacent community? Do we just unquestioningly trust our Council? Maybe so. Here are some examples of what our residents didn’t know about. Most residents didn’t realize that our City’s full-time employees went from 278 to 328 in ten years, the highest total ever. Most residents didn’t know those employees were given the highest compensation in our City’s history, significantly more than adjacent City’s employees. Most residents didn’t know that our City borrowed $91 million to pay off pension obligations, resulting in debt payments of $5.5 million for over 20 years. After doing so, the unfunded pension obligations rose again to $28 Million. Most residents didn’t know the stormwater tax was for operational costs (i.e., employee compensation) rather than capital improvements. Most residents didn’t know the City wanted to build a second LA County Library in Polliwog Park. There are a lot of essential matters that our residents didn’t know about. Here’s why we may be a complacent community. First, our City is a great city. There isn’t much to complain about. Second, we all have a great sense of civic pride, so we are reluctant to criticize. Third, our local press focuses more on community events than serving as a “watchdog.” Fourth, our Council is sometimes less than transparent, likely to engage in “spin” when they sense our community would be opposed. Let’s pay closer attention to the actions of the Council. If more MB residents engage in City Council matters, we will have more transparency, accountability, and a better City Council.

Over two days, students gathered to debate a wide range of global issues, tackling some of the most pressing challenges facing the world today. During the conference, delegates simulated United Nations discussions about global affairs, diplomacy, and conflict resolution. —- Superintendent’s Newsletter

MBUSD Has Been Named An “Honor Roll Scholar District”:

We’re thrilled to share that MBUSD schools have once again earned a spot on the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) “Honor Roll.” Even more exciting, Manhattan Beach Unified School District has been named an “Honor Roll Scholar District” – a testament to our commitment to academic excellence, continuous improvement, and closing achievement gaps. This recognition, now in its 10th year, is based on CAASPP data in reading, writing, and math and highlights schools that are preparing students for success in the workforce and life. —- ManhattanBeachUSD (Social Media)

1. ** Does blowing your nose make cold symptoms worse? —- Hector J.

2. ** I had a nightmare that I died of rabies after an encounter with bat. —- Noah T.

3. ** I hate businesses that don’t accept cash. —- Taylor H.

4. ** Since they first opened, I have frequently visited The Green Temple in Redondo Beach. Excellent cuisine and welcoming service are always provided. Steve and Elena, the proprietors, are outstanding. —- Floyd P.

5. ** I’m growing in my concern for the Pete Hegseth nomination. His history of out-of-control alcoholic behavior is very troubling. —- Fred T.

6. ** Let me see if I understand this correctly. In just a few months, we’ve lost two of our longest-serving City Council members, our city manager, the financial director, and now the Fire Chief. That’s a significant exodus of critical leadership – the people we rely on to maintain our city’s stability, safety, and progress. Yikes! —- Andy H.

7. ** A robber broke the gym lock while I was working out this morning at Torrance 24 Hour Fitness (Crenshaw/PCH) and took my possessions, including my silver Toyota Prius key fob. In the end, the criminal found my automobile and took it. I took every precaution, yet the robber was incredibly daring to take my car. —- Kaley A.

8. ** Karine Jean-Pierre is easily the most incompetent, pathetic White House press secretary ever. Yes, my friends, you guessed it, another D.E.I. hire. —- Dana W.

9. ** Richard Montgomery is celebrated for his remarkable recall of city affairs over 20 years and his exceptional talent for forging relationships. His leadership as mayor during the pandemic’s early days showcased the vital importance of regional collaboration, solidifying his reputation for deep knowledge of municipal operations. He will be missed. —- Lee T.

10. ** Criminal defense attorney, husband, and devoted father of four Robert Eugene “Bubsy” Courtney, 89, passed away at home in Hermosa Beach on December 1, 2024. He was a SAG member and actor in Rock Pretty Baby (1956). —- Editor’s Note

11. ** Airlines are shameless! They rake in billions from sneaky “junk fees” for bags and basic human decency – like sitting with your child and flying out of California? Prepare to be gouged. It’s legalized exploitation, and this 55-page Senate report finally pulls back the curtain. Enough with the corporate greed! This is bull-s—t! —- Tawny K.

12. ** A consortium of debt-holder investors now owns California Pizza Kitchen in Manhattan Beach, and their interest in customer service is as cold as a prison warden’s heart. Expect about as much warmth and hospitality as you’d find in solitary confinement – because profit spreadsheets don’t care if your pizza arrives with a smile, even if a robot serves you. —- Holly W.

13. ** Today, a stranger’s kindness warmed my heart. I joked about wishing for a gift card at Vons while he bought two. After paying, he surprised me with a $30 card! I thanked him as he left. That’s the true Christmas spirit! I’ll pay it forward. —- Marlene S.

14. ** Bill Clinton said there was truth in the assessment that being overly woke had hurt his party. Duh! —- Hans F.

15. ** A car can be used as a refrigerator in the winter. —- Alex G.

16. ** Thank God for our neighbor’s early morning walk. He spotted brazen thieves on Ave G stealing catalytic converters and alerted the RBPD! Thanks to his quick action, these criminals didn’t get away with it. Total thefts: 3. Stay vigilant, neighbors – we’re stronger together against these lowlifes! —- Daisy F.

17. ** When did evidence-based healthcare become controversial? The UK is right to ban puberty blockers for kids if risks are “unacceptable.” We protect children from cigarettes, alcohol, and dangerous meds – why not irreversible treatments? Adults can decide for themselves, but kids deserve safeguarding, not ideology disguised as healthcare. —- Dr. Andrew H.

18. ** A four-hour nap is a lot, but four hours of sleep is not. —- Jane D.

19. ** Ed Kaminsky, thank you for standing up for women and girls. Forcing girls to compete against male-bodied athletes at any age or level is wrong. It’s not hateful or bigoted to say so. —- Alison S.

20. ** I don’t get the hype around Hammitt handbags. The leather peels, the finish wears off, and customer service disappoints. Plenty of better bags are out there for less. Not worth it! —- Sarah K.
