MANHATTAN BEACH WATER BILLS SET TO RISE THIS SUMMER:

Manhattan Beach residents and business owners should brace for higher water bills starting July 1, after the City Council unanimously approved a rate hike last week. The new charge – 0.38 cents per 748 gallons – could increase bi-monthly residential bills by $3.82 to $11.46, depending on usage. Local businesses may see steeper hikes, ranging from $15.28 to $76.40. City officials say the increase is necessary to maintain infrastructure and ensure long-term sustainability of the water system. While the move was approved without opposition, it will likely stir concern among residents facing mounting utility costs.

MB Rolls Out The Red Carpet – And A Fire Engine:

The Push-In Ceremony at Fire Station 1 on May 6: “We were honored to share this special tradition with our City Council, City Staff, and community members as we welcomed Engine 21 into service,” the City posted on social media. “This time-honored ceremony – rooted in 1800s firehouse tradition – reminds us of the strong bond between firefighters and the communities we serve.”

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Dan Stern (MB Former Mayor)

Manhattan Beach has had a salary and benefit explosion over the last few decades. The population of the city hasn’t grown in 30 years but the payroll certainly has. It’s absurd to have 10% of the employees receiving over $300,000/year. That exorbitant result was “achieved” in 2023. Only when spending other people’s money do those with the purse strings act this way. Manhattan Beach already has a huge debt in the form of bonds, some of which helps pay for the pension deficit.

Kennedy Center Chief And Manhattan Beach Local Richard Grenell Blasts AP For Flat-Out Lie:

Richard Grenell, Manhattan Beach resident and current Interim Executive Director of the Kennedy Center, slammed the Associated Press on May 5 for falsely reporting that events at the famed arts institution were canceled. “The AP lied,” Grenell posted on X, formerly Twitter. “We didn’t cancel a single show at the Kennedy Center. We simply ask that shows don’t lose money and leave us with the bill.”

Manhattan Beach Unveils Sleek New Railing Upgrade:

On Tuesday morning, Manhattan Beach officials cut the ribbon on newly installed railings along the historic pier, replacing the 35-year-old, corroding barriers with sleek, sea-air-resistant aluminum. The $1.8 million project, launched in 2020 during the pier’s centennial, preserves the iconic seafoam green look while embracing modern durability. “Today, we celebrate not just new railings, but our collective dedication to preserving this treasured icon for future generations. The new corrosion-resistant aluminum railings enhance safety, meet current building codes, and stay true to the Pier’s historic charm,” the City noted on social media. “Huge thanks to: Our City Council & Treasurer; Public Works & City Staff; Gil Gamboa, Lead Engineer; Our amazing residents for your patience & support! Every upgrade – from the Roundhouse to utilities and now these beautiful railings – reflects our commitment to both preserving and improving this beloved space. We invite you to visit, take photos with the new railings, and continue creating cherished memories here at the Pier.”

(Bob Holmes responded to the MB Weekly query for comment: After two long years, one suspect is finally in custody – and arrest warrants have been issued for three others – in connection with the Pasha Fine Jewelry smash-and-grab robbery in broad daylight that SHOCKED Manhattan Beach in the summer of 2022.) Regrettable incident. Amazing MBPD work considering the thieves wore covid masks and were near impossible to identify. With our new pro victim District Attorney Nathan Hochman, we can expect a vigorous prosecution.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Name Withheld by Request (Manhattan Beach)

My eyes nearly exploded when I read Paul Wafer’s outrageous salary report in MB Weekly. Are we living in some alternate universe? How do we have multiple Manhattan Beach staffers making more than the Vice President of the United States – or the Governor of California? That’s not just excessive, it’s obscene. These are taxpayer-funded salaries in a town of 35,000, not executives running Fortune 500 companies. And what’s even more surreal? Total silence from the Mayor and City Council. Not a word. No explanation. No accountability. Forgive me, but this is civic negligence masquerading as leadership.

Skechers Laces Up For Wall Street Exit In $9.4 Billion Buyout:

Manhattan Beach-based footwear giant Skechers is stepping off the public market runway, announcing a $9.4-billion deal to go private. New York powerhouse 3G Capital will acquire the company in a transaction expected to close in the third quarter. The move follows Skechers’ recent hesitation to issue full-year financial guidance, citing global trade uncertainties. With over three decades of bold branding and billions in sales, Skechers’ shift away from Wall Street signals a new era – one perhaps with more agility, less scrutiny, and a tighter corporate fit. Industry watchers are lacing up to see what’s next.

The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. in the 100 South block of Sepulveda Boulevard. “It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Braun Levi ‘25 tragically lost his life in a vehicular accident Saturday night. Braun was a shining presence in our Loyola family, bringing light, joy and inspiration to everyone he touched,” Loyola High School posted on the student’s death. “As the Varsity tennis team captain for three years, Braun was a true leader and student athlete, serving as a member of the Student Council, a senior Big Brother, Kairos retreat leader and volleyball team manager.”

Manhattan Beach Charts Future In 2025 State Of The City Address:

At the 2025 State of the City address held Tuesday, April 29, at American Martyrs Church’s O’Donnell Hall, Manhattan Beach officials reflected on a year of challenges, growth, and resilience. Mayor Amy Howorth opened by honoring victims of the Eaton and Palisades fires, noting the city’s compassion by referencing the 200 displaced families who found shelter in Manhattan Beach and the 200-plus students absorbed into local schools. The mayor highlighted the transition in City Council leadership, with newcomers Nina Tarnay and Steve Charelian – former finance director – replacing longtime public servants Steve Napolitano and Richard Montgomery, who served a combined four decades. City Manager Talyn Mirzakhanian, who rose through the ranks of the city’s community development department, was also spotlighted following her appointment after Bruce Moe’s retirement. Infrastructure, education, and public safety were emphasized, as was the city’s ongoing challenge with state housing mandates. Howorth reaffirmed Manhattan Beach’s advocacy for local control and praised efforts alongside state Sen. Ben Allen’s office to introduce new housing legislation.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Tim Hagerman (Host of Behind The Line Podcast)

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, honoring federal, state, and local peace officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. On May 15, four Manhattan Beach Police Officers will be among the 26,950 peace officers remembered for making the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

  • Officer Charles Grau was the first Manhattan Beach officer killed in the line of duty. On September 11, 1952, he died after suffering a stroke linked to a head injury sustained during a domestic violence call.
  • Officer Richard Timothy Giles lost his life on February 14, 1962. While pursuing a speeding vehicle on his police motorcycle, he was struck by a car making an unsafe turn.
  • Officer Martin Ganz was shot and killed on December 27, 1993, during a traffic stop in the Manhattan Village Mall parking lot. As he approached the vehicle, the suspect exited and shot Officer Ganz three times.
  • Officer Chad Swanson was killed on October 4, 2023, while riding his police motorcycle to work. A vehicle made an unsafe lane change, causing a chain-reaction crash that claimed his life.

Many may not know that LAPD Officer Chris Hagele was also killed in Manhattan Beach. On March 10, 1980, while conducting surveillance on two bank robbery suspects, he was accidentally shot by another LAPD officer after the suspects robbed a bank downtown. We must always honor the brave men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting others – and never forget those who gave everything in the line of duty.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Fred Taylor (49-year Manhattan Beach Resident)

So, you say you love Manhattan Beach, our pleasant, comfy community beach town… well, not so fast. You may not like it too much longer. As the cliché ‘Big Brother’ brings the thought of top-down authoritarian rule, enter RHNA, Sacramento’s Regional Housing Needs Assessment law. Each city must adopt a so-called Housing Element. Your city, MB, did that way back in May 2023. The state mandates that MB build 774 units, 495 of which must be affordable housing [Whatever that is?]. So we now have a ‘Residential Overlay District’ called ‘ROD’ which specifically details sites for this egregious building growth and density. Sacramento must approve all this… And the kicker is, when any developer brings in a project with 20% ‘affordable’ housing, they get to kick our building codes to the curb [Pun intended]… like height requirements, parking provision, and much more. We can say NOTHING about it. Projects must be approved automatically or face monthly fines of $10,000 upward. Only one city, Huntington Beach, is fighting back. You can stay informed at www.manhattanbeach.gov/ROD. Plans are now under review for 2301. N. Sepulveda – a cool 38-unit monstrosity – JUST 7 STORIES TALL [Gulp!]. And 45 parking spaces for a projected 76 vehicles in residence. The ten-story monster will be detailed in my next article… Care to fight?

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sargent Andy Abreu (MB Police Department)

We want the public to know that a hidden camera was recently discovered in our city. While this is the only device we’ve identified so far, residents need to understand that criminals increasingly use advanced technology to carry out illegal activities. Our commitment is to stay ahead of these evolving tactics and to keep our community informed. If anyone sees something suspicious, we urge them to contact the police immediately.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by S.H. (Manhattan Beach)

As a homeowner and business owner in Manhattan Beach, I confess to a bafflement that borders on real frustration. In a city of merely 35,000 souls, why must we bankroll salaries more suited to the Pentagon than Pier Avenue? The numbers are not simply high; they are jaw-dropping. Some public employees earn more than U.S. Senators, yet our council smiles. The silence from our City Council is not golden – it is profoundly disappointing. Our elected stewards, sworn to fiscal prudence, look away while municipal payrolls balloon higher and higher, and that doesn’t even begin to include the pensions. Accountability is not an optional accessory in governance – it is its spine.

Manhattan Beach’s Real Q1 Luxury Boom Notes Prominent Realtor Ed Kaminsky:

A recent headline claimed Manhattan Beach smashed records with $733 million in Q1 home sales – but the truth, while less sensational, is still stunning. Local real estate expert Ed Kaminsky set the record straight: the correct Q1 total was $366.4 million – the confusion? A common reporting glitch where both sides of a transaction are counted. Despite the correction, 2025’s first quarter nearly doubled last year’s $188.3 million, driven not by rising prices but by a wave of luxury deals. Twenty-four homes sold for over $5 million, and eleven broke the $8 million mark – compared to zero at that tier last year. Experts link the surge partly to families relocating after the January fires in the Palisades. Add in the area’s elite schools, coastal charm, and new buyers from the entertainment world, and it’s clear: Manhattan Beach is hotter than ever – just not $733 million hot.

EXCLUSIVE
MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Paul Wafer

As part of my ongoing reporting on the excessive compensation levels paid to staff of Manhattan Beach, I list the following compensation levels in Manhattan Beach from 2023:

The State data from 2023 (the latest available) has the best breakdown of the compensation elements for city employees. In 2023, about 10% of all employees had compensation of over $300,000 per year, ranging from a high of $445,984 down to $303,605. A full 69% of the compensation was for salaries (48%) ($5,716,099) and overtime (21%) ($2,411,467), and another 11% went to a lump sum, deferred compensation, and “other pay.” The pension contribution was about 12% of the total, and the health, vision, and dental contributions, averaging about $24,000 per employee, were about 8%.

MB Weekly Readers Crown David Slay “Manhattan Beach’s Most Popular Chef”:

In a sizzling victory, MB Weekly readers throughout the South Bay have named David Slay the Most Popular Chef in Manhattan Beach. Known for his signature blend of sophistication and comfort, Chef Slay has become a culinary force in the downtown area. “Chef Slay has been a thunderbolt for the downtown area,” said Ann S., a longtime resident and frequent diner at Slay’s celebrated restaurants. From his perfectly seared steaks to his inventive seasonal menus, Slay’s influence extends beyond the kitchen – helping energize the entire local dining scene. Patrons consistently praise his attention to detail, warm hospitality, and commitment to sourcing top-quality ingredients. Slay’s impact is measured in rave reviews and the buzzing vibrancy of Manhattan Beach’s restaurant culture. As one reader said, “Every meal at Slay is a masterpiece – and a reason to return to downtown.”

Downtown MB Water Looks Discolored – But It’s Still Safe:

“Some customers in the downtown area may experience discolored water due to ongoing construction work at Lot 3. The construction team is using large amounts of water to control dust, which is stirring up natural minerals in our pipes. If your water looks brown or cloudy:

  1. Avoid doing laundry
  2. Run cold water for 5-10 minutes
  3. Try again after an hour if needed

The water remains safe to drink. We’ve already reduced water flow at the construction site to help minimize this issue.” The city issued this notice on April 22.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Russ Lesser
(President, Dive N’ Surf)

Q: HOW DID DIVE N’ SURF START?
A: Identical twin brothers Bill and Bob Meistrell graduated from El Segundo High School in the late 1940s. They went to work as lifeguards and when they got cold in the water they decided to do something about it. They read an article from a professor who proposed using neoprene to help stay warm in the water which no one had tried. They purchased some neoprene and started making wetsuits. A couple of friends had started a shop called Dive N’ Surf in Redondo Beach and the brothers bought into it, and then eventually bought their partners out. While there have been arguments about who made the first ones it has been proven that the Meistrells made the first commercially viable wetsuits. However back then you had to go to Dive N’ Surf and get measured up as most of the suits were custom made.

Q: HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME INVOLVED WITH DIVE N’ SURF?
A: In 1962 I was at Cal State Long Beach studying to be a CPA. I met the Meistrells one day to get an outboard motor repaired. We became friends, my brother and l took dive lessons and the Meistrells told me that when I graduated and became a CPA they would give me their accounting work. I graduated, joined the army and then became a CPA. I started doing their accounting work in 1966. One day we sat around talking about how to grow the business. The two options were 1) build a chain of Dive shops or 2) start selling wetsuits on a wholesale basis. We chose #2, purchased a little factory, some sewing machines, and started selling wetsuits to the local surf shops. We would silkscreen the name of the shop on the wetsuit. However we needed to develop our own brand and so as Bill Meistrell said, “my wetsuits fit like a glove” we started the brand Body Glove. The company grew rapidly and in 1990 I was offered the job as president of Dive N’ Surf and Body Glove. We had started licensing the name Body Glove for other products such as apparel, snorkeling gear, body boards, etc. and now Body Glove is worldwide, has sales of close to a billion dollars annually, and employs thousands of people because two guys got cold in the water.

Q: WHAT “SECRET SAUCE” EXPLAINS THE LONG-TIME SUCCESS OF DIVE N’ SURF?
A: There are many things. Bill and Bob were very customer oriented. They would do anything to make a customer happy. For example, years ago when they were selling boats, Bob sold a boat to a customer and said if he didn’t like it after 90 days he could bring it back and get his money back. He brought it back and it was pretty beat up and said he wanted his money back. Bob said, OK, that was the deal. The man laughed and said, “just kidding, I actually want to buy another boat, just checking to see if you would keep your word and you did.” He became a lifetime customer and this is one of many examples. Our entire staff is trained to carry on Bill and Bob’s philosophy. We also carry a large inventory of high quality products for surfing, diving and going to the beach, and we are very active supporting many community organizations.

Q: IF A YOUNG PERSON WANTS TO WORK THERE, WHAT SHOULD THEY DO?
A: We hire people of all ages including young people and in their case often it is their first job. Many of them are in school and we schedule their hours around their school schedule. We instill in them a solid work ethic and the importance of high quality customer service. We teach them skills that no matter what they do later in their life these skills will help them be successful. Right now we are fully staffed but if someone is interested come to the store and fill out an application. If you are interested in working in the scuba field you need to be scuba certified. We start scuba classes each week.

Q: HOW CAN PEOPLE LEARN MORE ABOUT THE STORE AND ITS SPECIAL HISTORY?
A: There is a book titled “Fits like a glove, the Bill and Bob Meistrell story” that is on Amazon but almost all sold out. It is also available at Dive N’ Surf, or if you come to the store a staff member can give you a tour of the store and its history.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING DIVE N’ SURF IN A POST-COVID WORLD?
A: It is challenging because of all the purchases people can make by going online. Luckily the South Bay is loyal and shopping local has stayed strong. Also we teach a lot of scuba classes and you can’t learn to dive online. We have a large customer base that likes to actually try a wetsuit or type of apparel on in person. So far our sales have stayed steady after COVID. I believe this is due to our customer oriented staff, our marketing, quality inventory and good store management. The Dive N’ Surf and Body Glove story is a classic example of how our economic system of capitalism is supposed to work. Two guys get cold in the water and provide a product people need, give great customer service and seventy years later the company is worldwide and employs thousands of people.

My mind is blown by the idea that ANYONE would support Hamas. 23% is high, and the fact that people are empathetic to these terrorists is a clear indicator that we’ve failed as a society on so many levels. The atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7th seem to have been forgotten and/or denied by these uneducated or poorly informed folks in the same way that the Holocaust is being denied and minimized in our educational system. At Coachella this past week Green Day and another Irish band decided to post on their screen, “Free Palestine and Israel Sucks.” The victims of the Nova festival are being blamed for being there. Wondering what would happen if a gang would openly murder, dismember, rape, mutilate, and all the other horrific things which Hamas did at Nova would happen at Coachella. Would we be having a different conversation?? Or is it just that it’s happening to Jews that makes it tolerable? Please help me understand!

By-The-Wind Sailors Invade Manhattan Beach – Beautiful, Bizarre, And Slightly Stinging:

Visitors to Manhattan Beach have spotted striking blue sea creatures washing ashore – meet Velella velella, or “by-the-wind sailors.” Though jellyfish-like in appearance, they’re a different species entirely. Driven by wind and ocean currents, their translucent sails glide them across the water’s surface. Marine experts caution: while beautiful, they can still sting – don’t touch it.

MBPD Battles Crime With Drones And Determination:

The Manhattan Beach Police Department deployed high-tech tools and old-fashioned footwork in a busy mid-April week of crime fighting. On April 15, a drone was launched after a burglar entered an unlocked sliding door at 1300 Park View while the resident slept. The startled victim yelled, causing the intruder to flee. Despite the aerial search, the suspect was not found. That same day, officers responded to a theft on the 2700 block of Sepulveda Boulevard. The suspect was located near Rosecrans and Redondo but fled on foot. Following a quarter-mile chase, MBPD arrested the suspect without incident in El Segundo. Just two days earlier, on April 13, MBPD intercepted a stolen vehicle entering the city at 4:52 p.m. A high-risk traffic stop on the 300 block of Rosecrans led to another arrest.
