MIDDLE SCHOOL GUN SCARE SPARKS PARENT UPROAR:
MBUSD VOWS FASTER, SMARTER RESPONSE

Manhattan Beach school officials admitted they could have acted faster and communicated better after an unloaded gun was found in a student’s backpack at Manhattan Beach Middle School on March 19. At a tense town hall on Monday, April 7, Superintendent John Bowes acknowledged parent frustration over the delayed notification and lack of a lockdown.

“… We’re bringing in a crisis communication expert to help us methodically go through our protocols and using this as a case study to help us understand how to improve for the future,” Bowes said during the Q&A session. “We’re not doing it by ourselves. We’re bringing in an expert to assist because we want to get this all dialed in right so that next time, we have the best possible outcomes with regard to communication that is timely and informative, with the right tone, and provides the information that parents and staff want…”

“I agree with you that more timely communication could have and should have occurred …” MBMS Principal Luke Olesiuk said in response to a participant question.

Parents can weigh in at the next MBUSD board meeting on May 7, where an updated safety plan will also be reviewed. Though the student was quickly detained without incident, many in the community say the more significant issue was the communication breakdown – something the district now says it’s determined to fix.

EXCLUSIVE – ED KAMINSKY:
South Bay Real Estate’s Resilient Charm Amid National Shifts

South Bay real estate leader Ed Kaminsky sheds light on the unique dynamics of the South Bay market, emphasizing its status as a micro-market compared to sprawling cities like Los Angeles, Miami, or Hong Kong. Despite lacking the volume of these global hubs, the South Bay continues to maintain impressive super-prime sales, thanks to its distinctive charm and strategic location. According to Ed, the South Bay witnessed a significant rebound in 2023, with MLS data indicating a 142% increase in home sales exceeding $10 million compared to 2022. This return to 2021 levels – 17 sales – highlights the area’s resilience despite national downturns. Notably, 2024 recorded 16 super-prime transactions, just one fewer than the previous year. Manhattan Beach remains the epicenter, accounting for around 60% of these high-value sales. Ed points out that MLS data overlooks the unique local trend of land sales, where older homes are purchased and replaced with luxury properties worth over $10 million. As such, the actual volume of premium real estate activity is even higher. Looking ahead, Ed identifies three key influences on the market: Pacific Palisades residents potentially relocating to the South Bay, economic shifts driven by the Trump administration, and state-mandated housing density changes. Through it all, Manhattan Beach’s allure – top schools, coastal ambiance, and community feel – continues to sustain demand, making the South Bay an enduring real estate hotspot.

Charlotte Lesser is a Manhattan Beach icon who has devoted years of service to making Manhattan Beach a better, safer place to live. It’s now up to the rest of us to step up and follow her example of getting involved to help keep Manhattan Beach special. Charlotte is always the first one to say it isn’t about her, it’s about everyone else. The best we can do for Charlotte is continue putting others first, the worst we can do is think it’s anyone else’s job but ours.

My family has ties in Hermosa, and we have for years; it’s where we all hung out and grew up. It’s sickening that someone like this is ruining the fun and magic of the pier for other people. Chairing Manhattan Beach Neighborhood Watch is a very important task, but comes with no glory, no pay, no perks, and lots of hard work and dedication. To do so for 45 years is almost unbelievable. For Charlotte Lesser, Co-founder and 45 year Chair, it has been a labor of love. But make no mistake about it, it is a labor. Our city is better, happier, and definitely safer because of Charlotte. Thank you Charlotte.

Have you ever seen a child in Manhattan Beach wearing a plastic ear cup? Chances are they are a patient of Dr. Sheryl Lewin, a board-certified Craniofacial Plastic surgeon specializing in ear reconstruction, otoplasty, and non-surgical infant ear molding. Thousands of children worldwide are born with Microtia (small ear) and Atresia (no ear canal). Most patients are only affected on one ear, but some are affected on both. With a closed ear canal, these patients have hearing loss and wear a special bone anchored hearing aid. Dr. Lewin developed a surgical procedure that gives these children a “hearing ear” in just one surgery, using 3D technology to create a mirror image of the unaffected side while simultaneously implanting hearing technology. Families travel from all over the world to receive this life changing surgery and stay nearby Manhattan Beach because it provides a kid friendly post-operative environment. Very few surgeons across the country limit their practice to gain this expertise. Some inexperienced surgeons attempt this procedure with devastating results. Dr. Lewin’s non-profit, Earicles, provides free surgery to children with prior failed ear reconstruction. To learn about Dr. Lewin or donate to her foundation please visit: https://lewinear.com/earicles

1. ** Spectrum in Manhattan Beach might have the WORST customer service ever! Bold claim? Maybe. But it’s painfully true. Their staff – utterly powerless in this huge company – make the DMV look efficient! Long waits, zero accountability, and frustration galore. Disgraceful! —- Ali B.

2. ** Hermosa Beach is pushing back – but they can’t do it alone! California’s communities are under siege, and if we don’t fight now, we lose everything. Crime, homelessness, and endless (and I do mean endlessly) bad policies are destroying our neighborhoods. Every resident must wake up, speak out, and push back before it’s too late. —- Wally A.

3. ** Interested in a police records job, but can only work part-time? Well look what we have here! No better time to come join our team. Hourly Pay: $29.22 to $37.29 —- Visit manhattanbeach.gov/jobs for more information

4. ** As a gay male, I’m no Covid zealot; I never was. I had faith – in science, the NIH, even Tony Fauci. I remembered his AIDS-era leadership. But after watching the chaos, spin, and shifting goalposts, my trust cracked. I get that plagues are messy. But now? I don’t trust Fauci. Not even a little. —- Andrew L.

5. ** When NCAA President Charlie Baker (incorrectly) claims there are only 10 men in women’s NCAA sports, people think it’s no big deal. But if he’d said only 10 men are doping in men’s NCAA sports and they’re not drug testing going into March Madness, people would be losing their shi*t. —- Alison S., Manhattan Beach

6. ** The mid-year budget review showed that the city is already close to $2 million over budget in salaries. Some of that is due to mutual aid for the fires, but in the private sector, you would look for ways to adjust your budget to make up for the shortfall by limiting overtime, a hiring freeze, and perhaps layoffs. In our city, they just allocate more money to the salary budget. It drives me crazy! —- Paul W.

7. ** Graffiti chaos. The walls and park were tagged overnight, and the retaliatory tags were placed today. Police documented it, and Redondo Beach City’s crew is already erasing it. I was impressed by the swift response and hard work. Saturday cleanup in action. —- Angie S.

8. ** Do you have any “Broken Windows” in your business? —- www.BrokenWindowsBook.com

9. ** Veterans of Hermosa’s oil wars gathered at the Hermosa Beach Museum to mark 10 years since the 2015 Stop Oil victory. 11. ** AttaGirl has taken over the old Dia de Campo spot, transforming it into a sleek, modern space with great vibes and upbeat music. Inspired by Middle Eastern flavors, their innovative menu breaks the mold of generic bar food – bringing fresh, exciting energy to the neighborhood – a bold and welcome change. —- Gary L.

14. ** Kids Eat FREE on Mondays at Hook & Plow. From 5 pm to close, treat yourself to a delicious adult entrée, and your little one gets one meal free. It is a perfect family night out in Manhattan Beach. —- Hook & Plow

15. ** As a local restaurant owner, I’d like to throw a pie in the face of parents who let their bratty kids scream and run wild in restaurants. It’s not Chuck E. Cheese, you morons, it’s a dining establishment. Have some decency and teach your kids manners – or eat at home where chaos is your business, not ours. —- Name Withheld by Request

16. ** Just a few years ago, med schools couldn’t stop preaching their ultra-woke antiracism. Now? Suddenly, it’s all about “protecting science” from MAGA. What changed? A $5 billion slap from the NIH capping their gravy train. It turns out virtue-signaling stops quickly when the free money dries up. Hypocrisy meets karma. —- Heather K.

17. ** Shoutout to Jake at Joey in Manhattan Village – a terrific waiter who goes above and beyond! Friendly, attentive, and always on point with service. If you’re dining there soon, ask for Jake – he’ll make your experience even better. Great job, Jake, and thank you. —- Orlando C.

20. ** A couple of days ago, I was in Home Depot when I saw this scrawny redneck trying to return a clearly used chainsaw. Standing a few feet behind him, I didn’t understand why the store clerk wouldn’t take it back. But the guy blew a gasket. “This is really f–ked up,” he shouted, loud enough for everyone within earshot. The poor clerk just stood there and took it. —- Andrew P.

21. ** Antisemitism has its source not in the Jew but in a savage sickness afflicting the antisemite. —- Rhonda T.

22. ** Who are these sick, unhinged, rage-fueled maniacs attacking Tesla? A 42-year-old arsonist calling herself “baby” online allegedly torches cars and defaces property because she doesn’t like Elon Musk. This is not activism – this is criminal insanity. Living with your mom due to “emotional problems” does not excuse this scum throwing Molotov cocktails and spewing hate. SILENCE IS NOT SAFETY:
MBMS PARENTS ALLEGE GUN INCIDENT MISHANDLED

Frustration is boiling over in Manhattan Beach after the alleged mishandling of a firearm incident at MBMS on March 19. Parents say district leaders, including Superintendent John Bowes, have failed to provide transparency, accountability, or a plan to prevent future threats. “… I understand that last week’s incident has created a deeply concerning situation that has shaken our community and I hate that that happened here on my watch,” Bowes said at the March 26 MBUSD Board meeting before public comments were heard. One speaker, a teacher and parent, demanded an independent investigation into a “breach in protocol” in the announcement of when a weapon is found on campus. “… we were not prepared to discuss these issues with our students or parents the following day due to the lack of communication …” In her remarks, Police Chief Rachel Johnson said, “I am profoundly grateful for the vigilance of the staff member who overheard a concerning conversation and took immediate decisive action … when our Police Department learned of this incident, our school resource officers immediately sprang into action … To our students, if you see something that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, speak up, your voice matters …” Bowes noted there will be a town hall for the MBMS community on Monday April 7 at 5 p.m.

MB Weekly Readers Express Frustration Over City’s Silence On Paul Wafer Inquiry:

A recent MB Weekly story detailing the city’s lack of response to long-time resident and taxpayer Paul Wafer sparked significant feedback from readers. Of 171 responses, 166 expressed discontent and frustration with the city’s refusal to address Wafer’s questions. Many viewed the silence as dismissive and disrespectful to a community member invested in the city’s well-being. One Manhattan Beach business owner, who has been in the area for 10 years, remarked, “I sense these folks have gotten a bit too complacent.” The strong reaction underscores growing concerns about the city’s accountability and communication with residents.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Charlotte Lesser
(MB NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH)

Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DEVELOP THE IDEA OF A NEIGHBOR WATCH IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I had learned about a program called Neighborhood Watch while at a PTA conference in 1979. At the same time, my husband who was a new member of the Manhattan Beach City Council was concerned about the significant numbers of residential burglaries occurring weekly in the city. I agreed that if the council wanted to support such a program, I would lead the effort to institute Neighborhood Watch in Manhattan Beach. I would be able to use many of the skills I had learned while a member of the Junior League.

Q: WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF RUNNING THE VITAL COMMUNITY SERVICE?
A: Challenges have changed over the forty five years. In the early years we needed to create relationships with the community and the police department. We developed an outreach program where we educated blocks of residents how to: ONE, keep home and person safe, TWO, learn how to contact police if something is of concern and THREE, get to know your neighbors to look out for one another. Next we developed a network of more than 500 blocks that were educated through weekly crime updates and ongoing gatherings where safety information was provided by our police department. Today the challenge is to reach the new homeowners with the message to join the effort. Knowing your neighbors makes you safer.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO THE FUTURE LEADERS OF NEIGHBOR WATCH IN TOWN?
A: With so many of our residents securing homes with electronic devices and able to access the crime updates on their computers directly from the city, it behooves Neighborhood Watch to continue to recommend the need for better awareness of those who live on the block so they can look out for one another. When neighbors know their neighbors, they work together to keep safe.

Q: HAS THE CURRENT POLICE CHIEF BEEN SUPPORTIVE OF YOUR WORK?
A: All of the seven chiefs over these 45 years have supported the Neighborhood Watch program. Chief Johnson is no different. As times have gone by, the support has changed, but the message is always the same. If you want to be safer, join Neighborhood Watch.

Q: WHAT CAN RESIDENTS DO TO SUPPORT THE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAM?
A: Find out who your block captain is and join the block program. Volunteer to be the block captain, or even a more significant role. We are all VOLUNTEERS! Email Mirna Puma at mpuma@manhattanbeach.gov to get involved.

Q: IS THE TYPE OF CRIME IN THE CITY DIFFERENT TODAY THAN WHEN YOU FIRST BEGAN?
A: Neighborhood Watch educates the public to keep their homes safe. When the program began, we were experiencing more than one hundred residential burglaries per month. Now our residential burglaries are in the single digits monthly. We still need to do a better job with securing our vehicles. We are fortunate that we have an excellent police department, and because of the years of positive relationships with our police officers, the community is safer and supports the efforts of the department.

Q: IS THE NEW DISTRICT ATTORNEY PROVIDING ANY SUPPORT TO YOUR PROGRAM?
A: So far, I see an effort to prosecute more crimes and work closer with our police department to keep repeat offenders off our streets.

MB WEEKLY – ASK THE FORMER MAYORS:

QUESTION: ARE YOU PLEASED OR DISPLEASED WITH HOW THE CITY HAS HANDLED THE ISSUE OF OUTDOOR DINING?

** Dan Stern: Displeased. The city handled a decision with differing views in the usual way. Defer it, appoint a task force and let a $400,000 contract to study it. Kick the can down the road indefinitely and do nothing but waste money. We’ve been talking about outdoor dining for years and have done nothing. Other cities have acted, we’ve spent money with no decision, only a “vision.”

** Bob Holmes: The city has taken way too long to reach an outdoor dining decision. It is not easy, but reach a decision. If you are a restaurateur, you want more outdoor dining. If you have a downtown nail salon, beauty salon, dress shop, book store, shoe repair, or other small retail business, you want more street parking. There will be no perfect answer, but make a darn decision.

** Mark Burton: Bottom line is I am displeased with the long, drawn out process. It’s been years and I, and many other residents, have no idea where we are in the process, nor do we know when the process will end.

MB WEEKLY – READER COMMENT:

With the new year upon us …, I feel compelled to express my genuine gratitude to MB Weekly for its enlightening series of articles by Paul Wafer. His investigation into the extraordinarily high salaries of our city’s large and growing roster of employees was nothing short of eye-opening. For many of us, this was information we had never encountered before, and it delivered a much-needed jolt. Conversations with friends revealed the same sentiment – a mix of surprise and concern about how our city manages its finances. I can only hope these powerful articles have sparked discussions that might lead to meaningful change, underscoring the importance of a well-informed citizenry. Thank you, MB Weekly, for an outstanding job of bringing this issue to light. —- Name Withheld by Request

PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS – CHRONIC VEGETATIVE STATE?
by Paul Wafer

In healthcare, if you have an unresponsive patient, it makes it hard to determine the diagnosis. You can perform tests and collect data, but unless you can talk to the patient and get a full history, it can remain an incomplete puzzle. The same can be said for an unresponsive city government. One can collect data and come to some preliminary conclusions, but unless you can get answers to questions, you have an incomplete picture.

About 5 weeks ago I emailed our Mayor and City Council members requesting a response regarding a position I saw posted on the city website. The position required a GED or high school diploma and some experience as a police records technician. It had a starting salary of $114,000 plus benefits! I receive one response from Joe Franklin thanking me for my comments. A week later I sent the email a second time using the individual email addresses instead of the group email address and received two more responses. Nina Tarnay’s response, “Thank you for your email. I appreciate your input and will take your concerns and the information you shared into consideration,” and a response from David Lesser that was more substantive and described some of the processes of the Human Resource Department and he asked if I would like more information. I received no response from Mayor Amy Howorth or Councilman Steve Charelian, the former financial director of Manhattan Beach.

I took up Mr. Lesser’s offer to get my questions answered and asked a series of questions under 3 areas of concern: One, Job Classification and the compensation survey, Two, Work productivity standards and measurement, and Three, Overtime controls and fulltime employee volume controls. I felt these questions were important, especially after it was revealed in the mid-year budget review that the city is $2 million over budget in salaries for the first half of the fiscal year. Mr. Lesser responded on February 24th and copied our City Manager and stated it may take some time for staff to get the answers. I followed up on March 6th with the City Manager asking for a reply by March 14th. The questions I asked were basic management questions that should easily be answered. Sadly, to date, there has been no response. Disappointing, but unfortunately not unexpected.

Let your city government know you want answers at:

A: I was born in Tucson, Arizona, and am a diehard University of Arizona Wildcat! I found my home in the South Bay 21 years ago and couldn’t love this community more. A: Programming! We love our members and try to design programming for everyone. Listening to members and their asks is so important from the youngest members and staying on trend with great activities to our most loyal and tenured members, ensuring we are providing the home away from home haven is our top priority.

Q: WHO WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE DINNER WITH: ELON MUSK OR GEORGE CLOONEY?
A: George with Amal Clooney would be amazing especially if in Lake Como. That said, my celebrity dinner (or golf round) number 1 would be Charles Barkley.

A: I am always ready to talk about all things Bravo. I am also watching White Lotus and most recently the Slim Aarons Documentary, it’s inspirational as we are going through this renovation at Manhattan Country Club.

Understanding Low-Income Housing Eligibility in Manhattan Beach: There has been considerable discussion regarding low-income housing units and their beneficiaries. In Manhattan Beach, California, low-income eligibility is determined based on the area’s median income, as established by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). Income categories are typically defined as percentages of the Area Median Income (AMI) for Los Angeles County, which encompasses Manhattan Beach. For the fiscal year 2024, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has set the median family income for the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale, CA area at $98,200.00 for a family of four. Under these guidelines, a “low-income” classification applies to those earning up to $110,000 for a family of four or $77,700.00 for an individual. The City of Manhattan Beach adheres to these county-wide income limits when implementing various housing programs and policies.

For more details, refer to the official HCD income limits 2024 document:

MB WEEKLY – ASK THE FORMER MAYORS:

QUESTION: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN MANHATTAN BEACH?

Mark Burton: Josh, there are SO many! You can’t go wrong with Slay, the Strand House and for salmon, The Shade. For hamburgers, the best I found is Fatburger. For East Manhattan Beach, The Lido and Joey….

Dan Stern: There are a ton of wonderful restaurants and staff in M.B. I live in the north end, so I’m a regular at Fishbar, Sloopy’s and OB’s. Downtown it’s Shade, The Kettle and Brewco with occasional safaris farther afield. May I blame the restaurants for being overweight?

Russ Lesser: Manhattan Beach residents are lucky to have many fine restaurants in the city. We visit quite a few different ones. When our kids were young and we were celebrating an event such as a birthday, anniversary, graduation, etc. we would go to Panchos. Living in the beach area near downtown, we like to walk to dinner, and our favorites are Mangiamos, The Kettle and Nicks. If we drive to dinner we like Lido, Tin Roof and Islands.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Diane Chang

Two men stole a laundry bag in Tree Section, waiting for pickup. Does anyone recognize these jerks? They were walking in the tree section, saw my Rinse laundry bag next to my gate for pickup, and instead, they stole it. The bag was gone before Rinse could get it. They’re on my Ring, contemplating whether to steal it, and then the taller guy grabs it and takes off. Since some people seem to think this is a situation where these two individuals assumed my laundry bag was a free-for-pickup, let me add that the bag is left next to a gate tucked on the far end of my driveway, not out by the sidewalk. When the taller man went for the bag, he did so in a hasty manner, like a thief does. I can assure you this was not a situation where these men thought the bag was left out and free to take.

Attagirl! Chef David LeFevre’s Newest Eatery Fires Up Hermosa Beach:

Manhattan Beach culinary titan David LeFevre has done it again with Attagirl, a California Mediterranean hotspot that opened March 6 in Hermosa Beach. In a signature move, LeFevre promoted longtime Fishing With Dynamite chef de cuisine Alice Mai to lead the kitchen, where she crafts fresh pastas, smoked focaccia, and grilled proteins kissed by a white oak-fired grill. The 90-seat eatery, just steps from the Hermosa Pier, leans into veggie-forward, plant-and-protein-based fare, with shareable plates like chickpea batter-fried rockfish and lamb tagine. A cocktail lineup developed by Ryla’s David Ruivo adds a Mediterranean twist to classic drinks, featuring limoncello-spiked white sangria and a coriander-infused gin and tonic. Brunch and lunch services are on the horizon, promising shakshuka, speck-topped eggs Benedict, and crispy potato breakfast plates. With Attagirl, LeFevre and Mai continue redefining beachside dining – one bold dish at a time.

10. ** “Overindulgence is a form of child abuse.” – Dr. Phil McGraw. Too many parents today are raising entitled, fragile kids who crumble at the first sign of struggle. 18. ** I tend to agree with Russ Lesser that transgender females have an unfair advantage when competing against biological (gender-assigned-at-birth) females. Can anyone advise if this advantage would not be true if intervention via puberty blockers begins before puberty? The inference is that puberty blockers would interfere with muscular development, which would contribute to the unfair disadvantage, and that the individual continues the treatment throughout their competitive tenure. —- Elyse G.
