This surprising statistic has sparked a lively discussion among the readership, with many questioning what’s driving this high level of spending. The poll sheds light on the realities of modern grocery shopping, where inflation, dietary preferences, and lifestyle choices contribute to increased expenses. Readers share tips and tricks to manage these costs, with some advocating for bulk buying and others turning to budget-friendly meal planning. (PART ONE)

Q: WHAT IS THE CORE MISSION OF MB SAFE?
A: The clue to our core mission is in our name: MBSAFE: Manhattan Beach, Safe Alternatives For Everyone. Our core mission is to provide leadership and to manage and eliminate the destructive consequences of homelessness in our community. We do this by advocating and educating. Advocating looks like compassionate outreach to homeless people in need and offering resources and insisting on enforcement of local ordinances so public spaces are not overrun by camping, panhandling or other destructive behaviors. We strive to educate the public about issues related to homelessness, the city’s plan for addressing it and how residents and visitors can help in a safe and productive way. We start with, A HAND UP NOT A HAND OUT!

Q: WHEN WAS MB SAFE FOUNDED?
A: In 2018 a group of residents on social media recognized the need to discuss how to address the issue of homelessness that was becoming more prevalent in our community. We met in person for a more productive conversation. We ended up with 5 core board members that still make up MBSAFE today. We formed a nonprofit, 501(c)3 in 2019 and set to work outreaching and educating the residents, businesses and city leaders.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING MB SAFE?
A: There are several challenges we face from the perception of our organization, to fundraising, to manpower/volunteers. MBSAFE has a mission to outreach compassionately to help end the suffering of people living on the street or in their vehicles by recognizing their humanness and respecting their dignity as well as, to keep the community safe from the devastating consequences of homelessness on public and private spaces. We advocate for SOLUTIONS to homelessness and get involved with all organizations and individuals that work towards that end goal. MBSAFE is a small organization that relies solely on private donors. The funds we receive help us to provide short term rents or deposits, family reunification travel and food costs, clothing for work or interviews, car repair, eye glasses or anything that gives a person a hand up to improve their circumstances. A HAND UP, NOT A HAND OUT is our guiding philosophy. We work closely and long term with an individual to help get them and keep them stable. I am in contact with many past clients that reach out to give updates or request assistance if they have a rough patch. If we had a greater pool of volunteers we could be more impactful getting our message out and hopefully getting more funds to support the work that we do. We don’t have the capacity for large galas but we would welcome people having gatherings in their homes or organizing small fundraisers for us to help raise funds. We would love to have a larger social media presence and share more of our success stories (there are many) and keep our website updated. We need volunteers for this.

I asked this question not in jest: what kind of an idiot would actually vote to reelect District Attorney George Gascon? Do you feel safer today than you did four years ago? Have you ever observed brazen shoplifting in large retail stores in Manhattan Beach? Are you proud that CVS has now locked up toothpaste? The man has been both an embarrassment and a disaster. I suggest all vote accordingly.

by Mark Burton (Former MB Mayor)

The issue is bias. The issue is local control. The issue is public safety. CalMatters is based out of Sacramento. Editorially, it is well known that they tend to lean left, with a clear focus on supporting the progressive policies of the State. Regarding housing, they fully support Sacramento usurping local control of housing and zoning. The Judge who ruled against the State housing law and for Redondo Beach relied upon Redondo Beach’s City Charter, providing local control of housing and zoning. Also, a City Charter gives a city the authority to have a City Prosecutor. Right now, we desperately need a City Prosecutor to file and prosecute all the misdemeanors in our community.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Addie C. (Manhattan Beach)

Have you ever called the non-emergency number for the Police Department in Manhattan Beach, only to be met with a robotic-sounding voice that doesn’t even seem to know where the Pier is? It’s a frustrating experience, especially when you’re trying to report something important. This disconnect is because your call is routed to a “regional” dispatch center located in Hawthorne, not directly to the Manhattan Beach Police Department. This system might make sense logistically, but it creates a frustrating barrier for residents seeking help. I’ve called twice or thrice to report concerns, but the process is so cumbersome and un-customer-friendly that I’ve stopped calling. These interactions’ impersonal and often confusing nature leaves one feeling more disconnected than reassured. For a community-focused place like Manhattan Beach, this setup misses the mark. Perhaps it’s time for a more localized approach that genuinely understands the community’s unique needs.

For forty years, I’ve wrestled with doubts about my husband’s sexuality, particularly his relationship with his friend, “Clark,” whom he met around the same time as me. Over the years, my suspicions were more focused on his female colleagues, but Clark always seemed to be his closest companion. The tension arose during a recent golf trip where the sleeping arrangements caught my attention: my husband and Clark shared a king-size bed while the others slept separately. His defensive response – “I don’t care what they thought!” – stung when I questioned him. It felt like a dismissal of my concerns and left me questioning his relationship with “Clark” and the transparency in our marriage. What does it mean when someone prioritizes a friend’s comfort over their partner’s peace of mind?

MB WEEKLY READER POLL:
SHOCK – 81% WANT D.A. GASCÓN DEFEATED IN UPCOMING ELECTION

In a startling revelation, a recent MB Weekly reader poll has sent shockwaves through Los Angeles County politics, indicating that District Attorney George Gascón is in deep trouble ahead of the upcoming election. An overwhelming 81% of MB Weekly readers in the South Bay expressed their desire to see Gascón defeated, signaling a significant shift in public sentiment. Gascón, who was elected on a platform of progressive criminal justice reform, has faced mounting criticism over his policies, which many argue have contributed to a rise in crime. The poll results suggest that many voters feel disillusioned with his leadership and are ready for a change. As the race heats up, all eyes will be on how Gascón navigates this turbulent landscape, with the overwhelming majority of voters seemingly eager for new leadership.

I just about fell off my chair when I read MB Mayor Franklin’s Commentary citing CalMatters as nonpartisan and unbiased. Say it isn’t so, Joe. Nothing, and I mean nothing, could be further from the truth. A cursory review of the website clearly shows they are not! If Mayor Franklin indeed were for public safety and supported having our own City Prosecutor, he would strongly favor a City Charter since it 100% guarantees that a City can have its own City Prosecutor. Also, if Mayor Franklin had local control of housing and zoning, he would have provided a link to the recent court case won by the City of Redondo Beach wherein the Court ruled in favor of Redondo Beach and its City Charter and against the State and its housing laws. To Mayor Franklin, I suggest you do your due diligence next time.

Joe Marcy
Newly Declared City Council Candidate
(PART TWO)

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM FACING MANHATTAN BEACH IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
A: This is a consequential election that will impact our future. Pay close attention to the district attorney race. We have to stay focused on crime reduction. We’ve made great strides but there’s more work to be done. Our police and fire departments are incredible. We need them to be visible, patrolling downtown and throughout our neighborhoods. Protecting our local businesses, our schools and our homes. It’s a priority to give them more resources to elevate their efforts.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: I’m an Aries. They say we’re passionate and motivated leaders who build community with cheerful disposition and relentless determination. Let me know what you think.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: I tend to enjoy romantic comedies. My all-time favorite is “Fools Rush In” with Salma Hayek and Matthew Perry. They learned to respect their differences and put love first.

Q: DO YOU FEEL AS SAFE IN MANHATTAN BEACH TODAY AS YOU DID FIVE YEARS AGO?
A: Last year, someone smashed my car window and stole my belongings. It was parked right in front of my house. As I vacuumed the shattered glass, I couldn’t help but feel violated and unsafe. You start to question what you may or may not have left in the vehicle. You worry that they’ve taken your identity and that they know where you live. (I changed the locks and installed a security system in the house.) And then you realize crime is happening all too often. A lot has changed over the years. That’s why we have to do everything we can to protect our hometown.

A: HOW WOULD YOU SOLVE THE E-BIKE MAYHEM MESS IN MANHATTAN BEACH, ESPECIALLY IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA?
Q: I’m glad council has taken action on e-bikes. Now it’s about enforcing it. We need to focus on patrolling and maximizing PDs resources. Let’s collaborate with our beach cities. We have to work together to get e-bikes under control.

A: DO YOU THINK OF YOURSELF AS A LIBERAL OR CONSERVATIVE OR NEITHER?
Q: The political landscape has changed so much. As a moderate, I value policies on both sides. Let’s be respectful of our differences and communicate effectively. City Council is a non-partisan role. When you look at my endorsements, it’s across the aisle. I’m eager to collaborate to get things done.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Dr. Harold W. (Manhattan Beach)

Why can’t you live within your means? Proposing a 10% sales tax in our city is a terrible mistake with far-reaching and unpredictable consequences. 10%! Such an increase will burden residents, deter visitors, and harm local businesses that are the backbone of our community. Balancing your budget should not come at the expense of our economic vitality and the well-being of your constituents. Fiscal responsibility is akin to safeguarding one’s virtue – you must learn to say no. We understand that the city faces financial challenges, but imposing such an additional tax is not the solution. Instead, we urge you to explore cost-cutting measures, prioritize essential services, and seek more sustainable revenue sources. This tax will hurt our wallets and damage the trust between the city council and the community it serves. We need prudent leadership, not additional taxation.

DUI doesn’t just mean alcohol. Driving while under the influence of marijuana, illegal drugs, or prescription meds can land you a DUI just as fast. A giant puff of marijuana smoke coming out of the driver’s window is a pretty good way to grab law enforcement attention. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, in 2021, 52% of all drivers killed in motor vehicle crashes who were tested, tested positive for legal and/or illegal drugs.

The issue of converting to a Charter City to protect local control over housing (and some other issues) is problematic. I look for information from informed, unbiased sources and am impressed by CalMatter’s explanation of this complex question. CalMatters is a nonpartisan and nonprofit news organization bringing Californians stories that probe, explain, and explore solutions to quality-of-life issues while holding our leaders accountable. We are the only journalism outlet covering America’s biggest state, 39 million Californians, and the world’s fifth-largest economy [according to the CalMatters website]. Here is the link to the full article, and the following are the arguments against becoming a Charter City, which, I feel, are germane to our challenge. It exceeds your 200-word limit, but this complex issue needs to be fully discussed in 200 words.

Joe Marcy
Newly Declared City Council Candidate
(PART ONE)

Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I’m a Manhattan Beach native that cares so deeply about our community. I’m a Pacific Panther, MBMS Wave and a Mira Costa Mustang. Spent my childhood playing in our parks and recreational facilities. A lifelong parishioner at American Martyrs. I worked my first job in the Manhattan Village. Made public service a priority – I serve as the Parking & Public Improvement Commissioner, Former Cultural Arts Commissioner and Chair, Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair Association Board Member & Past President, Leadership Manhattan Beach Alum and more.

Q: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO RUN FOR CITY COUNCIL IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I’m a hometown candidate who wants to protect our community and shape our future. Having served five years on commissions and fourteen years on the hometown fair board, it’s been a privilege to work closely with council, city staff, police and fire, our wonderful schools, local businesses, service organizations and our remarkable community. When you love your hometown, you do everything you can to protect it. It would be an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity. We have a lot to accomplish and we have to do it together.

Q: WHAT IS THE CENTRAL IDEA OF YOUR CAMPAIGN?
A: This campaign is not about me. It’s about us. It’s about being proactive and strategic in our approach and execution. Health and safety will always be our top priority.

What’s Important:

  • Feeling safe and welcome
  • Preserving our small beach town culture
  • Honoring our hometown heroes, veterans, volunteers, philanthropists, tenured and young leaders
  • Recognizing the dedication and service of our Police, Fire and City Staff
  • Supporting our legacy events and community traditions

I’m For:

  • Increasing police presence in Manhattan Beach … Additional patrol for all neighborhoods and retail areas.
  • Supporting our schools – the heart of our community … I’m a product of our Manhattan Beach Schools.
  • Maximizing the Public Art Trust Fund … Driving more upscale art installations into the community. Quality over quantity.
  • Supporting aggressive timelines to get things done.
  • Expanding collaborations with our beach city neighbors.
  • Supporting local businesses and local non-profits.
  • Adding more traffic calming measures in our neighborhoods.
  • Continuing and expanding our celebrations around patriotism and diversity.
  • Over communicating. Encouraging residents to visit our city website and channels.
  • Emphasizing our values as a community. We’re an inclusive community living in the best beach town in America.

I’m against wasting your tax dollars and distractions that don’t benefit our community.

I’m a Senior Executive in tourism and hospitality. (I’m not advocating for tour buses and over development.) But I do value our local businesses, the Manhattan Beach Chamber and Downtown Manhattan Beach Business and Professional Association. I want to thank and recognize the hospitality workers, business owners and leaders who provide unforgettable experiences in Manhattan Beach. … Next Week Part Two

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Lee Phillips M.D.

Why I Support Nathan Hochman for L.A. District Attorney: A Physician’s Perspective: as a physician, I am deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of our communities. The role of a District Attorney is pivotal in shaping our environment, influencing crime rates, public safety, and, ultimately, the health of our neighborhoods. With this in mind, I wholeheartedly support Nathan Hochman’s bid for L.A. District Attorney. Combating Violent Crime: I know that violence has a profound impact on public health – injuries, trauma, and the mental health repercussions that follow can affect entire communities. Hochman’s emphasis on transparency and community engagement. This trust is vital for fostering a cooperative environment where residents feel safe reporting crimes and engaging with law enforcement. A Focus on Victims’ Rights: When I practiced, I saw firsthand the impact of crime on individuals and families. Hochman prioritizes victims’ rights, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs met. This is essential for fostering trust in our justice system and providing security to those suffering. Public Safety as a Priority: Nathan Hochman’s approach to law enforcement focuses on a balanced strategy that promotes accountability and rehabilitation without compromising the safety of our communities. As we approach this crucial election, I urge my fellow Angelenos to consider the implications of our choice. Nathan Hochman represents a path toward a safer, healthier Los Angeles – where lives are saved and communities thrive. Let’s prioritize public safety, support victims, and combat the root causes of crime together. Let’s make our voices heard and ensure that Los Angeles remains safe for all its residents by voting for Nathan Hochman, District Attorney. https://nathanhochman.com

MB WEEKLY CRIME

The Manhattan Beach Police Department is investigating two construction site burglaries during the weekend of July 12-15. A construction site on Manhattan Beach Boulevard’s 1700 block was robbed that weekend. On Monday, July 15, workers returned to find a massive breach in the chain link fence and a missing toolbox. Northrop Grumman’s 1700 Rosecrans Avenue parking lot building site was broken into that weekend. The workers locked a storage chest inside a fence. On Monday, July 15, those workers returned to find the storage chest smashed into and tools stolen.

This month, MBPD officers used the victim’s “Find My iPhone” to apprehend two car burglary suspects. The woman parked her automobile near 13th Street and Manhattan Avenue on July 11. When she returned, the passenger window was broken, and a rucksack on the seat was taken. July 11 saw another El Porto parking lot car burglary. The owner locked the car but hid the keys on the roof racks. The victim returned to his car and was notified of credit card fraud. The victim learned that someone located his vehicle keys, entered his car, and stole many credit cards from his wallet. Again, MBPD advises beachgoers not to hide their keys in their automobiles. Thieves target beach-parked automobiles because people leave wallets and handbags there.

School teachers who knowingly refuse to participate in the pledge to our flag should not be a U.S. citizen let alone be in a classroom with our most vulnerable citizens. In fact, I don’t want people like that within 100 miles of young impressionable minds. By refusing to stand for the pledge they have signified they choose to not be a U.S. Citizen and have their citizens privileges canceled. Since they chose to not be a citizen they have no business here. Buy them a one way ticket to the country of their choice. Now I know that’s not going to happen but that’s what I think. Amen

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Name Withheld (Manhattan Beach)

My wife and I have a daughter, Liz, who was raised in Manhattan Beach and is our world. At 28, she has built a successful career as a nurse. Her boyfriend, Owen, has a history of heavy cannabis use, and my wife suspects he still uses it when stressed. Additionally, he struggles with gambling. Despite our concerns, we allowed Owen to stay in our walk-in in-law apartment when he had nowhere else to go. My wife feels he is disrespectful, but I believe her dislike for him may cause her to overreact. This situation has left me at my wit’s end, and my wife is constantly stressed. While we understand that Liz is 28 and an adult, we worry about her future with Owen. We’ve tried to give him a chance, but his behavior and habits are concerning. We decided to seek MB Weekly reader’s advice on navigating this complex situation without alienating our daughter or compromising our peace.
