MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
81% WANT MORE POLICE, GREATER PRESENCE, LESS RELAXED APPROACH

A sample poll of the 20,000 MB weekly readers displayed an overwhelming citizen desire for “more police, greater presence and a less relaxed approach” in response to the brazen smash and grab robbery at the Pasha jewelry store in the downtown area recently. Many downtown business owners reported “no police presence in the downtown area” close to where the jewelry store was hit in broad daylight on a busy Friday evening. Many other respondents expressed dissatisfaction that the Manhattan Beach Police Department has been understaffed for some time. Also coming in for solid criticism was the controversial progressive District Attorney, who one downtown business owner called a “criminal’s best friend!”

“There is no question in my mind the MB police should be seen in the downtown area, especially during the summer months. The ‘soft on crime’ mentality of some (George Gascon) will simply get you more crime. The ‘anything goes cause we’re at the beach’ mind set will be held in check in the presence of uniformed police officers. During my visits to the downtown area (2-4 times per week), I almost never see the presence of the MBPD. Let’s make sure the relative safety of MB isn’t lost.”

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
By Ned J. Momary

“I am writing regarding the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation and its total disregard for the money entrusted to them. Before the vote was taken on June 7th, MBEF authorized $49,999 to be transferred to the campaign to pass a YES vote on measure A—the parcel tax. The money raised for the Education Foundation was to be used for education, not a contribution to a political organization. I think this is an outrageous breach of fiduciary duty to the purpose of MBEF. I strongly feel the MBEF Board or people responsible for this charade should be fired and I further believe the money should be paid back by the offending parties.”

Retired MBFD

“Our fire department staffing is aligned with other fire departments within our area, yet the City continues to not hire staff in a timely manner, which creates additional hours, shifts, and overtime our firefighters are responsible to work. The MBFD has been mismanaged for over five years. Please support your Manhattan Beach Firefighters. Let’s continue to strive to make this fire department a sustainable and desirable place to work.”

Franchise Owner of Ace Handyman South Bay

When our son Max left for college and we became empty nesters, we felt we should be part of the change. So, after 33+ years in corporate America, we decided to start a small business and I decided to get more involved in the local South Bay community. (My wife Kim has been heavily involved in the community for many years.) After an extensive search I found a brand that I believe in and am incredibly proud to represent. We launched Ace Handyman Service South Bay on January 3, 2022. I knew I need a strategic partner that knows the construction business and can fix anything. I am thrilled to partner with Jan Van Soest. Jan was born and raised in Manhattan Beach and has worked in the trades for over 10 years.

1. ** The City of Manhattan Beach has failed in its principal responsibility of keeping its residents safe, preferring to spend its limited time on Peace Poles, Diversity Banners, etc. —- Dr. Arlene H., Manhattan Beach

2. ** Homeless. Took the dog out about 9:30 last night, and some homeless guy was sleeping on our couch on our front deck. Rousted him, and he went across the street and cozied in on our neighbor’s couch. I called MBPD, and he saw me on the phone and took off up the street. Really creepy. Beware. Lock your doors. I even think I saw him walking up our street this afternoon. Do not let your guard down. —- Mike Adams, Manhattan Beach
