** I’m currently reading Horse by Geraldine Brooks. It’s a multi-generational story of one of the greatest racing stallions in US history. It weaves through 1850, 1954 to 2019, incorporating biological research, racism, bravery, and doing the right thing. Brooks is a fantastic writer who changes the language of the chapters with the time period. Highly recommend it. —- Deborah Hofreiter, Mira Costa High School
** I am currently reading The White Album by Joan Didion. —- John Bowes, Manhattan Beach Unified School District

FORMER MB MAYOR COMMENTS ON FIGHT AMONG AROUND 1,000 JUVENILES AT DEL AMO FASHION CENTER IN TORRANCE:
** “We should all be deeply concerned about this incident. To have 1,000 juveniles take over a major mall is frightening. Clearly, the law and order is under assault even in the South Bay. As I’ve stated before, a police officer presence is the best deterrence. Hopefully, MBPD continues regular patrols in Downtown MB and our MB Mall. They are needed now more than ever!” —- Mark Burton, Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

MB WEEKLY – READER “Q & A”:
Q: ARE RISING INSURANCE COSTS ARE STARTING TO HIT HOME SALES?
A: In my experience, rising insurance rates have led to an increase in insurance questions during the home search process and offer negotiation period in addition to the due diligence period during escrow. For example, it is very common for a prospective buyer to want to know what a Seller is paying for flood and fire insurance. If I am writing an offer in an area prone to fires, I can write in the offer, “subject to the Buyer obtaining fire insurance…” Our market remains strong. The lack of inventory is very advantageous to Sellers! My Florida colleagues tell me that they have similar dialogues pertaining to flood insurance. —- Tara Klein, Realtor
Q: ARE IVY LEAGUE COLLEGES WORTH IT? WHY, OR WHY NOT?
A: I think it ultimately is worth the individual to take the acceptance letter from the Ivy League institutions. The alumni network and opportunity are far greater than other schools. —- Vince Altamura, Realtor
Q: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HOME PRICES STILL RISING DESPITE HIGH MORTGAGE RATES?
A: The Real Estate market in the Beach Cities is very strong, especially in Manhattan and Hermosa. This is caused by the limited amount of properties for sale. —- John Altamura, Realtor
Q: CAN MOVIE THEATERS SURVIVE?
A: Yes, movie theatres can survive because there is nothing quite like watching a movie on the BIG SCREEN! —- Mark Burton, Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

3. ** Two years before he met me, my husband of four years did something I feel was morally repugnant: He solicited a prostitute. When he committed this act, he was going through a dark period in his life. He was divorcing a woman who had cheated and left him for another man, raising his young son, and dealing with immense feelings of insecurity. He told me all this while we were dating, and I thought I would eventually get over it. However, almost five years into our relationship, it still haunts me and makes me question his character. I hate that he could do something like this, regardless of what he was going through. —- Name withheld by request, Manhattan Beach
