MB WEEKLY – INVESTIGATES:
How License Plate Readers Can Help Manhattan Beach Police Prevent Crime

License plate readers (LPRs) can be a valuable tool for law enforcement agencies to prevent and solve crimes. Here are several ways in which license plate readers can help police stop crime:

  • Real-time Data: LPR systems can scan and capture license plate information in real time as vehicles pass by. This information is instantly compared against databases of stolen vehicles, vehicles linked to outstanding warrants, or vehicles associated with known criminals. If a match is found, law enforcement can be alerted immediately, allowing for a quick response to potential threats.
  • Amber Alerts and Missing Persons: LPRs can be programmed to automatically scan for license plates associated with Amber Alerts or missing person cases. This can help locate and recover abducted children or missing individuals more quickly, potentially saving lives.
  • Traffic Violations and Wanted Suspects: LPRs can identify vehicles linked to individuals with outstanding arrest warrants. For example, suppose someone with a warrant for their arrest is driving a vehicle registered in their name. In that case, the LPR can alert law enforcement, prompting the suspect’s apprehension during a routine traffic stop.
  • Locating Stolen Vehicles: LPRs are highly effective at finding stolen vehicles. When a stolen vehicle’s license plate is scanned, the system can immediately alert law enforcement, increasing the chances of recovering the stolen property and potentially apprehending the thief.
  • Pattern Analysis: By collecting data on the movement of vehicles over time, law enforcement can use LPRs to identify patterns of criminal activity, such as frequent visits to known drug houses or other suspicious locations. This data can help in planning targeted interventions and investigations.
  • Interagency Communication: LPR data can be shared among law enforcement agencies, allowing for greater coordination in tracking down suspects or locating vehicles involved in criminal activity that may cross jurisdictional boundaries.
  • Crime Solving: LPR data can be invaluable in solving crimes after they have occurred. Investigators can use historical LPR data to trace suspects’ movements or gather evidence related to a crime, such as identifying the vehicles involved in a robbery or hit-and-run.
  • Deterrence: The mere presence of LPRs can deter potential criminals. Knowing that their movements may be tracked and their vehicles identified can discourage individuals from engaging in criminal activity, including stolen vehicle operations.

MB Mayor Urges Opposition To Cycling On Sidewalk Bill:

In a bold move to protect his constituent’s and visitors’ safety, Mayor Richard Montgomery of Manhattan Beach has taken a firm stand against AB 825, a proposed bill allowing cyclists on sidewalks throughout the state. Mayor Montgomery recently penned a strongly-worded letter to Senator Allen and Assemblymember Al Marasutchi, expressing the city’s vehement opposition to the bill and its potential ramifications.

The letter, titled “Cycling on Sidewalk Bill Puts Pedestrians at Risk,” highlights Manhattan Beach’s unique challenges due to its narrow sidewalks. If passed, the mayor argues that AB 825 would pose a significant threat to the safety of residents, visitors, and local businesses. The bill not only “strips enforcement powers from all California cities but will allow e-bikes to ride on sidewalks as well,” he added in an email to MB Weekly.

His words underscored the pressing need for legislators to consider the city’s specific circumstances when evaluating the proposed bill’s impact. “Can you imagine bicycles and E-bikes on sidewalks in the downtown areas of cities such as Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Santa Barbara, Carmel, Carlsbad or Monterey? … Please call your State Elected officials NOW! In the South Bay Area of Southern California please call: Senator Ben Allen (310) 318-6994 / Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (310) 375-0691.”

Increased Stormwater Fees Being Considered For Manhattan Beach:

The Manhattan Beach City Council agreed to begin a mail-in ballot procedure to raise the amount of stormwater fees residents must pay. The average annual cost for single-family homes would rise from $19 to $129 if the stormwater fees were approved by more than 50% of voters. The cost of running the City’s stormwater system, which is mandated by state law and prevents overflow from reaching the ocean, has significantly increased while the resident fee has not increased since 1996. The system has required more than $1 million in annual subsidies from the City’s General Fund over the past six years, including $1.6 million this year.

This morning at 7:49 a.m., a kid on an e-bike was hit by a car at the intersection of Rindge and Ripley. (He was still conscious but unable to sit or stand when the paramedics took him away on the gurney). The driver was out of his car assisting the kid until police and paramedics arrived. I don’t know the answer, but we need to do something. So many on e-bikes are speeding down the hills and not even stopping at the stop signs. It’s only a matter of time before someone dies or is permanently disabled.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW: BOA (FOR LUNCH) by Darby Winston

I must say my first visit to Boa in the Manhattan Village for lunch was a winner. All of the noise and ultra-darkness during the evening presentation is gone during the daylight; bright and pretty with a staff that seems happy to be there as opposed to most restaurants in contemporary life. The food was nicely done, and the atmosphere was lovely. The music is not too loud so you could have a conversation during lunch. I also found the prices to be quite reasonable given the atmosphere. I can comfortably say that I’ll be back without hesitation.

I am happy my tax dollars go to public safety, including fire departments providing paramedic service. Fire departments operate 24/7, 365 days a year. They work with minimum staffing levels required on their emergency vehicles. Every time a firefighter is off duty, that position must be filled with overtime. That means another off-duty firefighter must return to work to cover the open position and be paid overtime. These firefighters who make vast amounts of money in overtime also work massive hours at their expense. Thank them.

The Manhattan Beach Police Department detained a lady in connection with a retail crime where more than $1,000 worth of goods were reported stolen. Authorities claim that at around 1 p.m., they received a report of a grand theft at a Manhattan Beach shop. Officers from the MBPD spotted the suspect and tried to arrest her before she sped off, and a brief police pursuit started. According to the MBPD on Facebook, “The 405 on-ramp curb was kind enough to stop the suspect’s vehicle where she was ultimately arrested.” While police caught the culprit, the Rosecrans Avenue 405 on-ramp was briefly closed to traffic for almost an hour.

Twenty-five years ago, I went into a recovery program where I met a man who instructed me to do 100 random acts of kindness daily. I thought this was impossible! He explained that it is simple: holding a door for someone, saying hello to a stranger with a smile, and bringing in a shopping cart. His point was that whenever I do something for someone else, I’m not thinking about myself or my situation. This has proved to help both the other person and myself much more than I could have imagined.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:

A trip to the drugstore is one of the most private purchasing experiences there is. Your basket’s contents can reveal hemorrhoids, waxy ears, insomnia, constipation, a splotchy rash, or the need to taste every kind of Reese’s candy. People like to enter and exit the drugstore discreetly, hoping the cashier won’t take their time reviewing each item at checkout. To deter shoplifters, drugstores are increasingly locking their inventory behind cabinet doors with push buttons to summon an employee’s attention, making it tougher to maintain privacy. A 14-year-old girl needs to be monitored as she chooses a tampon that suits her cycle, and a pimpled youngster needs to hail a staffer to get his benzoyl peroxide. It can be awkward for adults to have a store staff follow them around the pharmacy like a personal shopper as they choose which type of dental floss to purchase. Retail theft costs consumers in addition to store owners. The issue of shoplifting extends beyond them. Each of us has to pay a price.

1. Cooking causes air pollution. After cooking, opening windows for a short period of time can significantly enhance air quality.

2. With just a little seasoning, food can taste much more intriguing. Additionally, it offers room for expression. Purchase a few spices and herbs, then experiment at will.

3. Use the word “best” before a recipe while searching online. There are better recipes available.

4. Quickly crafting more specific search statements is possible with advanced search tools. For instance, img html will produce worse results than img html -w3.

5. Using Autohotkey or AppleScript, you can automate repetitive computer chores. Make the computer perform a sequence “so simple a computer can do it” by repeatedly performing it.

Manhattan Beach, California, is synonymous with volleyball, particularly beach volleyball. The city’s sun-kissed sands have become a breeding ground for some of the sport’s most accomplished players. The Manhattan Beach Open, held annually since 1960, is often called the “Wimbledon of Beach Volleyball.” It attracts the world’s best players and is a significant part of the city’s sports heritage. Winning this prestigious tournament is a coveted achievement, and we can forever view each victor’s name on the Manhattan Beach Pier. Congratulations to Taylor Crabb, Taylor Sander, Besti Flint, and Julia Scoles for winning last weekend! Famous MB players include three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings. Walsh Jennings partnered with Misty May-Treanor to form one of the most successful duos in beach volleyball history. Another powerhouse is Mike Dodd, a native of Manhattan Beach and a five-time winner of the Manhattan Beach Open. The city’s high schools and colleges are hotbeds for nurturing volleyball talent, often feeding players into professional ranks. Mira Costa girls volleyball just beat the top-ranked team in the country, and coach Cam Green could lead the Mustang girls to a national championship. The community’s involvement in the sport, from youth leagues to professional tournaments, has created a vibrant volleyball culture. In Manhattan Beach, volleyball is more than just a sport; it’s a way of life. The city’s dedication to nurturing talent in world-class facilities and a beautiful setting continues to make it a global hub for volleyball enthusiasts and professionals.

Linda Stone, a former Microsoft executive, decided to conduct an informal study (“dining room table science,” she called it), inviting 200 people into her home – friends, neighbors, family members – and monitoring their heart rate and breathing while they checked their email. She said roughly 80% of participants periodically held their breath or altered their breathing. She named the phenomenon “email apnea” and described her findings in a widely read 2008 piece in The Huffington Post. Ms. Stone has since expanded the concept and renamed it “screen apnea,” referring to the disruption of breathing many of us experience doing all kinds of tasks in front of a screen.

Corner Bakery Cafe

If you’re yearning to experience what a Denny’s restaurant in a lousy neighborhood feels like, I suggest a quick trip to the Corner Bakery in Manhattan Village Manhattan Beach. We can start with the food quality, which tastes like it was all created with the cheapest ingredients known to man. The service level has all the charm of a poorly run cafeteria in an under-achieving high school. Honest to God, I wanted to like the Corner Bakery when I first walked in. The thought of having a nicely run casual restaurant amidst all the over-priced retail stores in the Manhattan Village was very appealing. But alas, that is where the dream sadly ended.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia

(El Segundo)

The recent sentencing of former Minneapolis police officer Tou Thao for his role in the tragic death of George Floyd has left many questioning the adequacy of the justice served. Thao’s nearly five-year state prison sentence, running concurrently with a federal sentence, falls far short of delivering the accountability demanded by his actions. While fellow officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck, Thao’s passive complicity symbolized a grave failure to intervene and uphold his duty to protect citizens. This sentencing, however, does not reflect the gravity of his negligence. Thao’s lack of remorse and failure to apologize during the hearing and his role as an experienced officer demand a more substantial penalty. While Judge Peter Cahill acknowledged that Thao bore less culpability than Chauvin, his sentence should have clearly stated that law enforcement must be held to the highest standards. A few years in prison for assisting in the death of a man is a disheartening verdict when considering the life lost and the pain inflicted upon George Floyd’s family and the broader community. Accountability in cases like these is essential to restoring public trust in law enforcement. The sentencing of Tou Thao should have sent a more vital message, serving as a reminder that officers who fail to act in the face of injustice will face appropriate consequences. Society deserves a justice system that holds those responsible accountable, and this case’s outcome is a reminder of the work that remains to be done.

2. ** I can’t believe airlines charge you for luggage. Who doesn’t need a suitcase of stuff after flying across the country? It’s like a restaurant charging you for silverware. —- Wendy R., Manhattan Beach

3. ** Fleming’s in El Segundo has seen better days. —- George A., Manhattan Beach

4. ** Salt & Straw ice cream is way, way too expensive! —- Boyd C., Manhattan Beach

5. ** Torrance adopts policy banning LGBTQ+ and other flags on city-owned light poles. A new resolution stipulates that only banners of city-sponsored events, as well as government and military flags, are allowed on city-owned light poles. Amen! —- Gayle R., Manhattan Beach

6. ** Let’s be honest. Woke teachers throughout our nation are trying to replace our values. I know. I was a school administrator who moved here a year ago. They’re not just pushing to read books. They’re creating an army of our kids. It’s a religion for them. I feel like as a Christian, my kids are getting rebaptized in another religion. —- Dr. Lauren S., Manhattan Beach

7. ** On my first visit, I was not impressed with either the food or service at Lido Di Manhattan Ristorante. Not returning. —- Fern P., Manhattan Beach

8. ** I would personally avoid Del Amo Mall! I witnessed a massive crowd of thug kids trying to rush into AMC. Large police response. Horrible! —- Gabi H., Hermosa Beach

9. ** If you would be so kind, please do not get into Real Estate or kindly leave if you cannot A) Answer your phone, B) reply to a text, voicemail, email, or, last resort, a smoke signal! —- Amy W., Manhattan Beach

10. ** American teenagers aren’t having a good time. They aren’t having sex. They aren’t driving. They are depressed, anxious, and lonely. (Whether social media is the cause or the catalyst is a subject of ongoing and intense debate.) —- Daniel B., Manhattan Beach

11. ** If you Voted for Gascon, are you embarrassed yet? —- Darcy R., Manhattan Beach

13. ** If there is to be any hope for classical music in America, it will have to come from a recognition that the embrace of woke values is a suicide pact for the arts. —- Dr. Harvey W., Manhattan Beach

14. ** At 1:45 a.m., a large white box truck drove north on Upper Crest through El Porto and then south on Highland. —- Rory V., Manhattan Beach

15. ** Several high-speed sirens moved south on Highland within 5 minutes. Box Truck deliveries at about 2 a.m. were impossible. —- Laci D., Manhattan Beach

16. ** As a 20-year-old, I urge my generation to read old books, memorize poems, and invite senior citizens to parties. —- Kat T., Manhattan Beach

17. ** Significant issue and I’m thankful you addressed this issue of e-bikes. It would be great if you could have put some statistics on the injuries, accidents, and even deaths so parents and kids understand the dangers. What I have seen out there with these kids on their bikes and without helmets and disobeying street signs is scary. I saw a 12-year-old going through the airport tunnel doing a wheelie at top speed at 10 p.m. and even posted it on TikTok. It needs to stop, and it starts with the parents. 18. ** MB Weekly is looking for a video host to do videos for our weekly publication. Must be good on camera and enthused about the area. Contact: MBWeekly@TimeWire.net

19. ** (Mike Michalski’s) comments on Montgomery’s misuse of the forum were spot on. The other council members ganged up on her because she insisted on airing issues in public and refused to go along with the backroom deals. Unfortunately, we now have a council, led by Montgomery, that does not represent the residents’ wishes. —- Don Stern

20. ** MB Post Office on Sepulveda: Customer Service lobby hours start at 10 a.m. – Really? What kind of poor service is this! Not only does the service line run out the door during the day, now you think it wise to shorten the hours? Thank you Postmaster Cynthia C. Campano-Witherall. —- Dave H., Manhattan Beach

21. ** Ten years ago, it was unlikely that you knew someone who identified as transgender. Today, it’s doubtful that you don’t know someone who identifies as transgender. Doesn’t that make you wonder why? —- Cindy H., Manhattan Beach

22. ** The world is changed by your example, not your opinion. —- Paula Z., Manhattan Beach

23. ** Did anyone else have a strange conversation about his foot-fetish Instagram page with a 20-something Jons Market guy? —- Rebecca Y., Redondo Beach

24. ** A 29-year-old man accused of stabbing a man at the Redondo Beach harbor, before the victim drove off in a car and crashed, was charged with murder this month, authorities said Tuesday, Aug. 23. Donavan Lamont Walters, whose last known address was in Virginia, had yet to enter a plea to the charge, court records show. —- Editor’s Note

25 ** It seemed like chaos was breaking out. The Rockefeller bike trail was my route. The sirens initially sounded like they stopped at Perry Park. But two police helicopters arrived, one hovering just above the electrical lines surrounding Grant and Phelan and the other above the bike path. A police truck flew south on Phelan. —- Carrie B., Redondo Beach
