MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

SAFETY • CITY • CRIME

** As a busy Manhattan Beach resident, I try my best to listen to the statements from the Mayor and the Police Chief regarding the safety of our community. As a psychology major in college, I can’t help but say I often feel they’re trying to “gaslight” the community on the seriousness of the crime problem in our city and the South Bay generally. Their smiley, “everything is great, never been better” approach makes me think they’re describing something that residents don’t see as they follow incident after incident. —- Clay Tobias, Manhattan Beach

** A 35-year-old motorcycle officer, Chad Swanson, died on the 405 Freeway, driving his department motorcycle to work. He leaves behind a loving wife and three young children, ages 4, 2, and 10 months, and parents. The community has honored the legacy and bravery of Officer Chad Swanson by leaving flowers and heartfelt messages at a memorial in the police station lobby and vigil and pier walk. I was honored to see the community come together to mourn the loss of Chad and show support for his family. I had the chance to meet Chad when I enrolled in the community police academy and was immediately struck by his professionalism and dedication to our community and public safety. He loved riding his motorcycle. Most importantly, he loved his wife and three children. I encourage the community to donate to the Peace Officers Research Association Fund to help support his family during this difficult time. https://porac.org/fundraiser/swanson-family —- Lee Phillips, Manhattan Beach

MB WEEKLY – READER RESPONSE:

ISRAEL HAMAS WAR

** I am totally disgusted with the reaction against Israel by some people, mainly young people. The final straw was when I heard that after a man and woman were taken hostage in Gaza, the HAMAS people took her phone, videoed them killing her, and then forwarded the video to her mother. That is about the most evil thing I have ever heard of. —- Russ Lesser, Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

** Are you startled or astonished by the recent events on college campuses, particularly the prestigious ones? The progressive movement perceives Israel as a fascist country. Has always been. There has never been a change from it. Israel has persecuted the Palestinians and all other minorities in the Holy Land for the past 20 years. That’s the view held by progressives. That’s what “indoctrinated” college students are “spouting” when they go to demonstrations or hold signs asserting that Israel has no right to retaliate against the Hamas onslaught on October 7 that resulted in 1,400 Israeli deaths, including children and the kidnapping of over 200 hostages. Be careful where you send your kids to college. Very careful! —- Clay Tobias, Manhattan Beach

CALIFORNIA HOUSE PAYMENTS JUMP 127% IN PANDEMIC ERA WITH RATES AT 23-YEAR HIGH – HOME SALES RUN 41% BELOW AVERAGE – WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO MANHATTAN BEACH HOMEOWNERS AND PEOPLE TRYING TO BUY A HOME IN MANHATTAN BEACH…?

** There is a very low inventory in the Beach Cities. If you want to sell in the area and stay here you are in a very difficult position. If you bought or refinanced in the last few years your interest rate loan is probably in the 2.5% range. So unless you are an all cash buyer, your new loan could be 7% or higher. Conversely, if you want to sell and move to a more tax friendly state like Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming or any mid-America or Southern state, you hit a home run. Your appreciation on your Beach Cities home probably appreciated more than enough to give you the cash to buy in these other states. So the question is, if your business allows you to move and you don’t miss our beautiful weather, what do you do?? That is what, I believe, is causing the lowest inventory we have seen in quite some time. My 2 sons, Gio, Vince & I would be more than happy to give a free detailed Market Analysis to help you make an Educated decision. —- John Altamura, Realtor

** This is huge for buyers trying to buy a home. Real Estate market has been sluggish I believe in part because of raising interest rates. —- Nina Michaels, Realtor Broker Vista Sotheby’s

In some places, that concept has been obliterated. Violent criminals are released time after time. Drug addicts are given tax money to buy more drugs. Personal betrayal is an industry. 24. ** Well done, Rabbi Kalev. Let’s publicize this incident and see if particular people of responsibility will do the right thing. This is not a political stunt; it is a crime. Requesting the offended students to sign a “gag” order is dumber than dirt. Whose idea was that … Joe Biden’s? Why is it so difficult to determine right from wrong? This one was a slam dunk, and the school heavyweights blew it. Anyone who believes this was a political stunt should not be in a decision-making position. —- Tom A., Manhattan Beach

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Fred Taylor (Manhattan Beach)

I’m writing to support our Jewish community in MB and our school District. This is also personal for me. This past August, I observed the 40th anniversary of receiving the forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life Christ offers. You see, my Savior is Jewish. Four of our precious Jewish middle schoolers were verbally accosted by an 11-year-old Middle Eastern female student, attending on a permit, from a family who lives out of the District. While our District denies the reported verbiage, here’s what we know. What was said has energized the Southbay Jewish community. Hundreds of emails have poured into the District office. Rabbis Yossi and Kalev have rallied to the defense of those accosted students. The verbal assault went viral online and now nationally has painted MB as a toxic and anti-Semitic city. Rabbi Kalev has spoken to the media, testifying that the kids fear wearing their Star of David to class. Yet, we’re asked to believe that the speech was political?? That’s hardly believable, considering the collateral damage. And more astonishingly, the ‘consequences’ to the perpetrator and the victims were virtually identical. All students were asked to sign a “no-contact agreement” with a gag order requiring no discussion with any students. In other words, hush it up. No suspension, no expulsion. At least, it requires the perpetrator to learn about the 1948 birth of Israel and a brief history of the Jewish nation. Add to that a full understanding of the unprovoked slaughter of 1400, Jewish citizens on October 7th. Finally, cancel her District permit. Dr. Bowes’ determination that the episode was merely political defies logic, and it is totally unacceptable. It’s not even a slap on the wrist; it’s a tap on the wrist at best … as we wait for the next anti-Semitic episode. In December of 2021, I met with Dr. Bowes and the Board with our parent group. As I presented the pornographic book “Gender Queer” to him, simply asking its link be taken off the District website, he equivocated, saying, “Some parents speak on behalf of some books and others for other books.” I wonder if the same lack of moral clarity guided his “political speech” decision.

Post Script: If the offended students had been some of our precious kids of color or perhaps a ‘trans’ student, might the decision and the consequences have been quite different??

Meet Maria Lastra

Founder And Director Of Spanish In Action

Q: WHAT DOES YOUR BUSINESS SPANISH IN ACTION DO?
A: Spanish in Action offers an immersive program designed to make learning Spanish an enjoyable experience for kids, teens, and adults (as requested). We create a stimulating environment where our students can comfortably participate in activities and express themselves in new ways. Our immersive classes deliver a fun, high-quality, and educational experience, catering to various learning styles to nurture a love for bilingualism from an early age. What sets us apart is our multidimensional program, an interactive cultural learning setting, and original Spanish learning resources, songs, and YouTube music videos for kids. These resources are the result of collaborations with artists from Nickelodeon and Disney. We leverage the power of music, scientifically proven to enhance long-term retention in young learners. Our custom activity books and teaching resources, now available in our online store, reinforce each new topic, incorporating positive messages inspired by the rich cultures of Latin America, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We combine these unique tools with an engaging approach to second language acquisition, ensuring children remain actively engaged. Our native teachers are carefully selected, each boasting over 30 years of language teaching experience. They plan and deliver lessons with genuine care and enthusiasm because we hold our families and students in high regard. We extend our gratitude to the community for considering us a gem and are humbled to have taught Spanish to over 8,000 students since 1986. This distinction solidifies our position as the most experienced school in the South Bay.

Q: WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?
A: When I arrived in the United States in 1986 and soon embarked on my teaching career, I encountered a distinctly uninspiring approach to language education employed by American educators. Drawing from my personal language educational experiences, I understood that the most effective way to learn a second language is through vibrant, enjoyable instruction and teaching materials. Thus, I set out to revolutionize the classroom during my initial teaching position at a local Montessori school. Shortly thereafter, I established Spanish in Action and took on the roles of teaching and directing Spanish programs at prestigious private preschools and elementary schools. Simultaneously, I began offering classes from my home in Manhattan Beach, which quickly grew to accommodate up to 90 students in small group sessions. This success ultimately paved the way for the opening of my brick-and-mortar school in Manhattan Beach in 2015.

Q: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO LOCATE IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I married an Argentinean professional athlete, who played rugby on the international stage and had friends all over the world. Surprisingly, he had a deep affection for Manhattan Beach. Not long after our wedding, we packed our bags with just a couple of suitcases and enough money for a month. The rest, as they say, is history!

Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: Virgo

Q: HOW DO PEOPLE LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
A: We primarily gain visibility through word of mouth, our online presence, and our dedicated email subscribers. As part of our ongoing efforts to expand, we are currently working on strengthening our presence on social media platforms.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: I don’t have one, but I do love to watch love and family comedies. I love to laugh. No drama please!

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN THE AREA?
A: I like the Strand House, Nick’s and Joey’s

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Bill Fournell

Q: WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO MANHATTAN BEACH IN THE FIRST PLACE?
A: I was born and raised in MB. After getting married and moving around a bit, my wife & I both agreed we loved my hometown. We settled back here and been here ever since. While it’s changed a lot, I still love the community and living here.

Q: WHAT MOST CONCERNS YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE OF MANHATTAN BEACH IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
A: It seems there are greater challenges with getting volunteers to step up to invest time and effort to so many of our wonderful community organizations. Whether it’s working a booth at the Hometown Fair, running our PTAs, etc., it appears harder and harder each year to get people to help out. I don’t know the root cause but I hear this over and over from many of our local volunteer led organizations.

Q: DO YOU FEEL AS SAFE TODAY IN MANHATTAN BEACH AS WHEN YOU FIRST ARRIVED?
A: I generally do feel just as safe today and when I was a boy walking to school and beach. If anything is a greater risk today, it’s the number of distracted drivers I see every day around town. “Get off your phone, it can wait!”

Q: WHAT IS THE SECRET SAUCE THAT MAKES MANHATTAN BEACH SO UNIQUE?
A: The sense of community. That people feel they are part of something bigger than their immediate family but more personal than an entire city. A sense of fellowship around common interests and goals for all of us.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN THE AREA?
A: Tin Roof Bistro continues to be our go to favorite. Great food and service, and those amazing brussels sprouts!

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: Ah tough question. I have to hedge and say a tie between Blade Runner and Godfather 2 (the rare sequel better than the original).

Vitamin C, elderberry, and zinc in-home treatments may boost the immune system and lessen symptoms. Nobel laureate Linus Pauling popularized vitamin C’s cold-fighting properties in the 1970s, driving demand. Vitamin C has been suggested to improve immune cells’ ability to locate and fight infection by supplement industry scientists. The nutrient’s efficacy is disputed. For one, the body cannot keep high dosages of vitamin C, such those in supplements, and excretes excess in urine. A 2013 meta-analysis of vitamin C trials found that regular supplementation before feeling sick can shorten colds by a day or so. After symptoms appear, vitamin C does not always help.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia (El Segundo)

Because the people paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own goods, the people who get the free stuff dislike the people paying for it. And the people who pay for the free things want them to stop receiving it. Additionally, the recipients of free goods have been trained to desire more free goods on top of what they already receive! Now, the people forcing others to pay for free goods have informed others who are RECEIVING the goods that those paying are rude and racial. So… The people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff and giving them the free stuff in the first place have persuaded the people who are GETTING the free stuff that they need to resent the people who are paying for the free stuff. We’ve allowed the practice of giving away free goods for so long that now there are more recipients of free goods than purchasers of free goods. Now, comprehend this. Somewhere between 200 and 250 years after their founding, all great democracies have committed financial suicide. The cause? By voting for candidates who pledged to give them money from the treasury in exchange for their support, the electorate realized they could vote for themselves more free money from the coffers. Do you see how the game is played now?

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Rabbi Josh Kalev

Our Students desperately need your help. Four Jewish students at Manhattan Beach Middle School (3 of these students are members of our temple) were recently “attacked” by another student because they are Jewish. The student approached them after Hamas attacked Israel and said that “revenge is beautiful” and that they were part of an “Israeli conspiracy.” Other threatening and horrific comments were made by this same student both in and out of class. Unfortunately, based on social media posts by the student’s parents, we know this hate speech is coming from the home.

The MBMS leadership ran an investigation and concluded that these comments were political, not hate speech. So, they closed the investigation without any action steps except asking our Jewish students to sign a “gag order” (which they have not signed) – this is truly outrageous.

PLEASE WRITE TO THE MBMS ADMINISTRATORS, SUPERINTENDENT, & SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS (info below) explaining why targeting Jewish students is not political but hateful. And that it is unthinkable that our students do not feel safe at school. While the catalyst might have been the war in Israel, the comments and anger spewed at our students were not political but blatant antisemitism.

I so appreciate your help. If the school leadership knows we are all upset by this situation, hopefully, they will find a better way to resolve this incident and create a school environment where our kids don’t have to hide who they are and the values they hold so dear.

EXCLUSIVE READER QUESTION
TO MB MAYOR
RICHARD MONTGOMERY

Dear Mayor: WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR COFFEE WITH THE MAYOR SERIES?
A: By hosting the “in person” bi-monthly Coffee with the Mayor series, I have met hundreds of new residents, business owners and even visitors to Manhattan Beach. I have learned that our website does not provide the answer to the majority of questions people have about our city, that they prefer to speak with the Mayor in person (outside of city hall or via Email), that they do not care about “party politics,” and support / appreciate this council’s focus on what’s best for Manhattan Beach.

MB WEEKLY – CRIME:

April – July: Calls vs. Arrests

Calls for service and arrests were up in July – not surprising, given that summer months are usually busy with police activity – according to the Manhattan Beach Police Department’s monthly crime report. For the month of July, there were 3,765 calls for service and 77 arrests, according to MBPD. That compares with 3,313 calls for service during the month of June with a total of 68 arrests; 3,082 calls for service in May with 66 arrests; and 2,942 calls for service in April with 57 arrests. Decreases seen in the month of July, in contrast to June, were instances of assaults (a total of 9, down 4 from June), sexual offenses (zero, down 1 from June), and vehicular burglaries (22, down 5 from June).

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:

Being Prepared! When traveling, I pack Covid test kits and medications. When we traveled to Croatia last month, I threw a digital thermometer in too. We had been enjoying Croatia for about a week and were living on a 45 foot catamaran when the symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI) came on and it was the second one in a month. My travel companion happened to have the right antibiotic for UTIs so I took it. The symptoms got better but I never got fully well. Two nights before we were to head home I got chills and a fever (digital thermometer was key!) The fever continued along with vomiting while I went to an urgent care and 2 hospitals to get testing done. Blood tests showed a serious infection. One female doctor urged me to stay and get IV antibiotics and not fly home. I listened fortunately. I was admitted to a horrifically filthy hospital for 4 days in Zagreb with sepsis and I used my trusty thermometer there too. I am grateful to be alive, grateful for my doctor who texted me constantly and for Torrance Memorial ER which was clean and English speaking. Blessed in MB.

People who have been to therapy realize that the relationship is unique. You may tell your therapist things you wouldn’t tell family. It can be the most intimate professional relationship you’ll ever have. When ready to move on, what should you do? Leaving therapy can cause anxiety even if patients feel they’ve achieved their goals. Most therapy terminations are initiated by clients, although not always in a healthy way. According to experts who have studied how people stop therapy, it may be tempting to ghost your therapist. However, that’s not the best approach.

Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

It made me proud to be a resident of Manhattan Beach when hundreds of people showed up at the pier on October 11 to support Israel. What Hamas did was evil, and there is no defense for terrorism. Period! It is a shame that many universities and other groups are afraid to take this stance. What is also a shame was the mainstream media reporting the story that it was Israel that bombed the hospital based on what Palestinian sources told them. Who could think that a group that slaughtered hundreds of innocent people would lie about an event like this? Some of them, including CNN and The New York Times, still have not apologized for reporting this lie, which has caused massive protests and rioting around the world. No wonder most people don’t trust the mainstream media to be honest or competent.

Manhattan Beach Hosts 33rd Halloween Pumpkin Race:

Pumpkins can be used for more than jack-o-lanterns in October. Some have wheels screwed into the bottom, are painted, or appear like different objects. This happened Sunday, Oct. 29, during Manhattan Beach’s 33rd Pumpkin Race Halloween weekend along the pier. More than 1,000 pumpkins raced down a track, but Torrance resident Ivy Tracey’s white unicorn pumpkin won the title at the 33rd Manhattan Beach Pumpkin Contest. A pumpkin race event lasted all day. Participants from city departments started the race before the public. City Manager Bruce Moe defeated Steve Napolitano, David Lesser, and Amy Howorth. At the festival, attendees could make shaker instruments by putting popcorn kernels in plastic Easter eggs, play drums and recorders with Redondo Beach’s Music Rhapsody program, shoot basketballs in a giant inflatable Skechers shoe, make clay pumpkins, get their faces painted, guess the weight of a huge pumpkin, and more.

Call it a realignment, political awakening, or vibe change. After Israel was attacked, something changed. For instance, A buddy informed us he was a “conscientious objector” in the cultural wars and was shocked by the West’s equivocation and apologia following the Hamas atrocities. “Not anymore,” he said. October 7 altered that. Liberal pals suddenly discussed gun purchases. Progressive friends discussed immigration and border security via SMS. In a whisper, one revealed watching Fox News.
