THREE ARM ROBBERS IN MANHATTAN BEACH ALREADY OUT OF JAIL, IN LESS THAN A MONTH:

Three (3) of the five (5) armed robbers from the March 22 second Pasha Jewelry robbery in downtown Manhattan Beach, approximately five blocks from the police station, are already out of jail, having spent less than a month incarcerated for an armed robbery. Eworth Sutherland was released on bond March 23, Jamil Edwards was released on bond April 18, and Alan Daniels was released on bond April 20. “We are living in a very sick world if criminals like this are released from jail in under a month,” said longtime downtown business owner C.S. (name withheld by request). “I feel nauseated for the MB Police and for the countless crime victims.”

Another smash and grab robbery on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 5:53 p.m., the Manhattan Beach Police Department responded to Pasha Fine Jewelry (217 Manhattan Beach Blvd.) regarding a smash and grab robbery. Multiple suspects entered the jewelry store, used hammers to break display cases, and fled the store with miscellaneous merchandise. On June 24, 2022, the jewelry store had a similar smash and grab burglary in which 12 young men, all dressed in black and wearing masks, robbed the store in broad daylight while putting a gun to Tony, the popular owner of Pasha Jewelry and telling him “not to move.”

40th Manhattan Beach Education Foundation:

The Manhattan Beach Education Foundation’s anniversary party on Saturday, May 6, was a big thank you. The foundation thanks the community for nearly $100 million in donations over four decades with speeches, bagels, ice cream, and a gigantic painting that would alter Metlox Plaza for years. “The Seeds of Knowledge” was unveiled Saturday. Betsy Schulz and her colleagues installed it. The porcelain ovals – some with colorful representations, others with big donors’ names – were painstakingly placed like puzzle pieces to create a picture that captures a young student’s pursuit of knowledge. “Several years ago, our organization thought it would be a wonderful tribute to our community,” MBEF Executive Director Hilary Mahan said. In a Friday podcast, Mahan claimed MBEF has grown in financing and budget share during its 40 years. She said annual contributions have increased from a tiny percentage of the school district’s budget to a large portion. “We also have grown in the scope and breadth of student programs,” Mahan said.

El Segundo Fire Department Will Be Temporarily Led By A Retired Manhattan Beach Chief:

A new interim fire chief has been appointed for El Segundo, and he has extensive South Bay expertise. On May 2, less than a week after announcing the retirement of the previous chief, Deena Lee, the City Council overwhelmingly approved the appointment of former Manhattan Beach fire chief Robert Espinosa to temporarily oversee the El Segundo Fire Department. Lee had been in charge since 2021. This is Espinosa’s first position since his retirement as Manhattan Beach’s fire chief in 2018. His time there came to an abrupt end after receiving a “no confidence” vote from several firefighters just before he left.

Manhattan Beach

May 5th, at about 8:45 p.m. in the downtown area of Manhattan Beach, I witnessed approximately 25 or more young kids running down to the beach full speed with masks and hoodies on, almost knocking over some pedestrians just walking on the street. It was ominous, of course, but perhaps most importantly, there were no police anywhere downtown, not on foot, on a bike, or in a car. I’m not sure what it will take for this city to awaken to the need for some police presence in the downtown area at night, especially on the weekends and especially in the summer. The city is playing with fire, and it has already seen the consequences and, sadly, without police presence, will likely see them again.

I totally agree that there needs to be enforcement of helmets and basic traffic safety for ALL on ebikes (bike path AND street), but notably the kids, who blow through stop signs without fail and don’t buckle their helmets. There should be cops assigned to Valley Drive MB before baseball practices (I see ebike mayhem repeatedly) as well as right after school. Maybe they can scanner them for speed just like cars? Education is one thing, but accountability, i.e. enforcement of rules/laws will change behavior. Scares me to death and I ride ebikes routinely. Oh, and while we are at it – can someone ticket walkers/runners on the bike path in MB when there is clearly an alternative of walking on the Strand? Super dangerous as well. That’s my rant for the day!

Hermosa Beach

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the top advocacy group for persons with the condition, 6.5 million adults over 65 in the U.S. currently have Alzheimer’s disease; by 2050, that number is expected to nearly double. The most common type of dementia, however, consistently rates as one of the most dreaded diseases in consumer surveys as a result of increased knowledge of the condition. According to research, the perceived threat may even be higher among family members who have witnessed the disease grow in a loved one. Sometimes people become overly concerned with keeping an eye on their own memories, with every name they forget or set of keys they lose appearing to be an indication of something more severe.

El Segundo

In the city of my birth, Chicago’s downtown, major hooliganism erupted last weekend, leaving 11 dead and 26 injured as gunfire erupted all throughout the city. Even though it seems fundamental and archaic, there might be a lesson in this. Crime tends to increase when criminals are allowed to roam free and courageous police officers are threatened with losing their jobs for carrying out their duties.

Reserves Will Be Depleted In Five Years, According To MB Budget Projection:

The majority of the budget report, presented by City of Manhattan Beach finance director Steve Charelian to the City Council, showed the City to be in sound financial standing. The city was able to take $1 million from its general budget to help finance the new Senior and Scout House Community Center this year since revenues are up practically everywhere, which is sufficient to allow the city to both dramatically increase its police force and continue saving for future employee retirement costs. Due to its excellent financial standing, the City has kept its prized AAA bond rating. In contrast, a graph that showed the City’s $22 million in undesignated cash and economic uncertainty reserves completely vanished after four years emerged three-quarters through Charelian’s presentation. The subsidization of stormwater fees by the General Fund, a tax that people are expected to pay but that has not been raised in three decades, is to blame.

Plans For The Dale Velzy Plaque Will Resurrect Manhattan Beach’s Surfing Heritage:

Bing Copeland still recalls spending his early adolescent years hanging out at the Velzy Surfboards store sweeping up the fine dust left behind from the balsa wood shavings carpeting the floor. Surfer Dale Velzy made the decision to relocate the business to a shop in an adjacent abandoned building after being ejected from underneath the Manhattan Beach Pier for causing a mess while producing surfboards.

A plaque is planned for the sidewalk outside of Velzy, a building that gave rise to the surfboard business, and which has been the subject of years-long efforts to acknowledge it as the first-ever surfboard shop, founded in 1950. As he spoke from his home in Idaho, 87-year-old Copeland remarked, “I think it’s wonderful and long overdue.”

Longtime Manhattan Beach resident Jackie May, who learned about Velzy’s story a decade ago and believed the surfer should be acknowledged, is the force behind the initiative. Everyone is really excited about this, May said. May had no idea it would grow to be that big.

Seeds Of Knowledge Monument To Be Unveiled By MBEF:

The “Seeds of Knowledge” project was finished this month after hundreds of hours of conversations with the MBEF board, a protracted hunt for the ideal artist to finish the project, and finally another search for the ideal location. The “recognition wall” names community members who supported education in nearby schools. The idea came when Manhattan Beach Education Foundation Executive Director Hilary Mahan first started looking into how other education foundations used art installations to celebrate community support for education. The “Seeds of Knowledge” community appreciation art piece will be presented on May 6, which also happens to be the 40th anniversary of MBEF.

Rotary Club President, Gerry Morton and his wife, at Rotary Club Fundraiser

Q: WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED FROM BEING THE MANHATTAN BEACH ROTARY CLUB PRESIDENT?
A: I knew on some level how great of a Club we had, but a year as President has shown me what exceptional people our Rotarians are. From hands-on service to financial giving to the camaraderie we experience at each of our meetings, the Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach has no equal.

Q: YOUR “CELEBRATE MANHATTAN BEACH” EVENT WAS A TRIUMPHANT SUCCESS. WHEN DID YOU BEGIN THE PLANNING PROCESS?
A: Our board and the Celebrate Manhattan Beach committee spend the six months leading up to the event planning to ensure that it’s a tremendous evening for all the attendees. This year’s Chairman of the event was Jordan Holbert. She and her committee did a fabulous job executing all the details. We also cultivate our sponsor and donor relationships throughout the year so that they can see their dollars’ impact and are excited to give each year again.

Q: HOW MUCH MONEY DID YOU RAISE FROM THE “CELEBRATE MANHATTAN BEACH” EVENT?
A: We raise over $200k each year, which funds our entire outreach in the coming Rotary year, which will be led by Lisa Hemmat-Lupercio beginning on July 1.

Q: WHY SHOULD PEOPLE CONSIDER JOINING THE ROTARY CLUB IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: There is no other group like this in Manhattan Beach. The quality of our speakers, the connection between the members, and our impact on the community are unrivaled.

Q: WHAT IS THE ROTARY CLUB DOING TO ATTRACT MORE YOUNG PEOPLE TO ITS MISSION?
A: Fortunately, we are blessed to have many young, energetic, career-ascending individuals in our Club. Like attracts like, and they (can I say “we”?) continue to bring in more young members to join us.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW:

Slay Italian Kitchen

Slay Italian Kitchen is a true gem of a restaurant. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the warm and inviting decor, with rich accents and comfortable seating. The service was equally impressive, with friendly and attentive staff who went out of their way to make sure every aspect of our dining experience was perfect. But the real star of the show at Slay Italian Kitchen is the food. The menu is filled with classic Italian dishes, each one prepared with care and attention to detail. From the handmade pasta to the perfectly cooked meats, every dish we tried was bursting with flavor and made with the freshest ingredients.

One standout dish was the lasagne, served with a rich tomato sauce and topped with freshly grated parmesan cheese. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the dish was cooked to perfection. Overall, I cannot recommend Slay Italian Kitchen highly enough. It is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner, a family meal, or a night out with friends. With its exceptional food, welcoming atmosphere, and top-notch service, it truly is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves great Italian food. Mr. Slay, who has earned a reputation in Manhattan Beach, as the uber-chef in town, has done it again with Slay Italian Kitchen.

The decline in traditional values isn’t particularly new. The things that make people feel as though their presence matters, such as civic-mindedness and religious observance, have declined in tandem. From Bowling Alone in the late ‘90s to Coming Apart in 2012 to a slew of recent “End of America” essays from every major publication, researchers believe these trends are accelerating further. This decline in civic belief and religiosity predated the mobile internet. We can’t blame the phones this time.

WATCH YOUR BACK – MBPD REPORT:
A Rise In Pickpocketing

According to an MBPD weekly report, wallet thefts that target female consumers have increased. Make sure to have a purse with a zipper closure when you go shopping. Never, ever leave a purse, wallet, or bag in a shopping cart alone, not even for a second. Pickpockets operate in groups. Another suspect snatches the wallet from the purse or, in certain circumstances, the entire purse while the first suspect diverts the customer. The MBPD reports 33 larcenies (including pickpocketing, shoplifting, purse snatching, bike and package thefts), 20 vehicle burglaries, five vehicle thefts, four business and four residential burglaries, seven assaults, one sexual offense, three robberies, and one incidence of arson over the past month.
