Grow A Pair by Paul Wafer:

You all know me as someone who writes often about fiscal responsibility. … I want to set that aside and talk simply about responsibility. As our elected officials, your responsibility is to listen to your residents and act in the best interests of this community. For years, we’ve been told that nothing can be done – that state laws require a one-size-fits-all approach, and that these rules leave us with little control over growth or the impacts of the current residential overlay district. But responsible governance means more than accepting limitations – it means challenging them. If state laws are constraining our ability to shape thoughtful development, what actions are you taking to advocate for change? If the overlay district isn’t working as intended, why hasn’t it been revisited? What this community is asking for is simple: effort and leadership. We want a City Council that actively works toward reasonable, balanced development – development that reflects the character, safety, and values of Manhattan Beach. Even if those efforts don’t succeed, we need to know that you fought for this community, that you did everything within your power to represent the people who elected you.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Vinny Fazzino (South Bay Builder)

After decades of building homes across the South Bay, I’ve learned this: what works beautifully at 40 can become dangerous at 70. Two-story homes, while classic, often hide risks for seniors that families underestimate. The biggest issue is stairs. I’ve seen too many injuries tied to something as routine as carrying laundry. When hands aren’t free, balance disappears – and that’s when falls turn serious. Transition zones – like moving from carpet to tile – are another silent threat, especially at night. Fatigue matters too. Climbing stairs can leave even a healthy person unsteady. Add poor lighting or clutter near landings, and you’ve got a real hazard. The good news? You don’t always need to move – you need to adapt. Better lighting, secure dual handrails, and clutter-free pathways make a meaningful difference. A safe home isn’t about luxury. It’s about foresight – and protecting independence for the long run. Learn more at https://BeautifulBuilder.com.

2. ** I read that our Police Chief hosted a team-building bowling party for department leaders. Sounds like a good time – but taxpayers deserve transparency. What exactly did the event cost the City? —- Walt A., Manhattan Beach

3. ** When our younger son hit his picky-eating phase, we created one sacred family rule: “Don’t yuck someone else’s yum.” Translation? You don’t have to eat the broccoli, but you also don’t get to act like Mom is dining on radioactive seaweed. Parenting, I’ve learned, is basically hostage negotiation with vegetables. —- Addi B.

4. ** PART-TIME FILING CLERK NEEDED – CULVER CITY: Entrepreneur seeking a reliable, organized, detail-oriented Filing Clerk for a home-based office in Culver City. Flexible Tuesday–Thursday hours. Duties include organizing files, scanning/uploading documents to Google Drive, sorting receipts and contracts, and basic spreadsheet tracking. Pay: Minimum Wage. 5. ** Free diapers! Gavin Newsom shouts, waving his hands like a late-night infomercial host. Meanwhile, taxpayers are allegedly paying 50 cents per diaper for products Costco sells at 10 to 15 cents each. And in a remarkable coincidence, one of the nonprofit executives involved reportedly sits on the board of Jennifer Newsom’s nonprofit. —- Arnold R.

6. ** The Mira Costa High School Choir proudly presents We Rise on Friday, June 5, at 7:00 PM in the Mira Costa Auditorium. Enjoy an inspiring evening featuring the remarkable talent and passion of the choir and a cappella groups. Tickets are $12. Seniors and students receive free admission. Support these outstanding Mustang performers. —- MBUSD

7. ** More disgraceful “inaction” by the City of Los Angeles. While local officials hold press conferences and issue statements, horrifying allegations of animal abuse continue on Skid Row – including mutilation, neglect, and illegal breeding. Two nonprofits are now begging the federal government to step in because City Hall apparently won’t. —- Carly Z., Hermosa Beach

8. ** The Grand View Gator Run was a smashing success, drawing more than 700 runners – the largest turnout in years – and raising nearly $50,000 for MBEF. From cheerleaders and marching bands to donuts with Mayor David Lesser, the event showcased the extraordinary spirit, generosity, and heart of the Manhattan Beach community. —- MBUSD

9. ** Having written a book on the history of poverty, I am mystified watching elite university students sneer at marriage, family stability, personal responsibility, and self-control – the very values that fueled their own rise and became the ladder out of chaos. Civilization survives not on slogans, but on discipline, sacrifice, and strong families. —- Dr. Fredrick Lowe, El Segundo

10. ** You are much more likely to become a professional athlete than you are to become a professional referee. —- Suzy E.

11. ** Burton is right. The City of M.B. has a spending addiction – just like most governments. A little more is always better. Just one more program. One more consultant. One more study. One more tax. “Just this once” somehow becomes forever. At some point, taxpayers stop being citizens and become ATMs. —- Name Withheld by Request, Manhattan Beach

12. ** Local Real Estate Office Hiring: Who do you know that is interested in the Real Estate Business? Local real estate office looking to hire an admin/director of first impressions. 14. ** The state of CA wants to punish our happiness with misplaced high-density, low-income housing. Why is that? Regardless, a vote for Chad Bianco (BEST) or Steve Hilton (also) will dismantle this madness. —- R.M., Manhattan Beach

15. ** Approximately $503 billion in economic growth left California between 2012 and 2023 as wealthy residents and businesses fled high taxes and regulations. Critics warn the proposed billionaire tax could eventually expand to all Californians, forcing middle-class families to pay annual taxes on property and personal wealth. —- TJF, Manhattan Beach
