MCHS STUDENTS ARE SEMI-FINALISTS FOR NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS:

More than 16,000 semifinalists from throughout the country were named by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, and they will now face off for the finalist spot in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship competition. Seven of the semifinalists are Mira Costa High School students. Out of a pool of more than 1.3 million juniors from 21,000 high schools, the MCHS semifinalists are: Kina Desai, Veronica Fish, Charles Hiatt, William Kiely, Naomi Kim, Adam Manasfi, and Mia Roman-Wilson. From the September 13 Mira Costa High School Facebook page: “Once again, our Mustangs are showing the nation their academic dedication and excellence! … These exceptional students, among other semi-finalists, represent less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors nationwide who received the highest PSAT/NMSQT scores, which served as an initial screen for the program. Only 16,000 semi-finalists were chosen from a pool of more than 1.3 million juniors who entered to be part of the program. Our students will now continue to compete to become finalists in the 69th Annual National Merit Scholarship program to earn a scholarship. Join us in celebrating their achievements, and we wish them the best of luck!”

New Parcourse Fitness Equipment At Manhattan Beach Strand:

City officials hailed the installation of new parcourse exercise equipment at the Manhattan Beach Strand fitness facility. The Manhattan Beach 10K donated the equipment, which Public Works installed after removing the fitness facility. The MB10K dedicated the original equipment in 2002. “This special course keeps the traditional seaside exercise alive and well in Manhattan Beach,” city officials posted on Facebook. “The City and MB10K had a special relationship that made this possible.”

Tips For Better Sleep:

  • Get a sleep app (Don’t kid yourself. Track it.)
  • Go to bed 8 hours before you have to get up. (If you are up at 5 to get to the gym, go to bed at 9. Yes, 9:00 in the evening!)
  • Keep regular hours. Similar go-to-bed and wake times most nights.
  • Avoid naps of more than 20 minutes.
  • Wind down in the evening with a book, computer, or streaming device.
  • Void your bladder entirely just before turning in.
  • Keep a notepad by the bed. When that thought keeps you awake, please write it down and forget it.
  • If it helps, use a sleep program of sounds and soothing thoughts.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Lisa Vega of Lisa’s Naturals

Q: HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
A: I have been a SAG actress for 30 years and hand crafting soaps, candles, and scrubs with cleaner ingredients was just a passion project. To show my appreciation to my agents for my acting work I would send custom gift boxes full of my creations. One Christmas, I did a holiday boutique and my business took off from there. I had requests for party favors for weddings and events and that motivated me to step it up and create a website and turn my passion project into a business.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING LISA’S NATURALS?
A: Since I have so many different products it”s difficult getting the word out that my specialty is customized gift boxes. Customers can even call me directly, tell me how much they want to spend and I will create their gift and even deliver it locally for free!

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: I love the atmosphere and food at Simsey’s and Nick’s.

Q: WHAT CONCERNS YOU ABOUT E-BIKES IN OUR COMMUNITY?
A: Seeing kids riding at fast speeds with no helmets.

Q: WHERE CAN PEOPLE GO TO LEARN MORE INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
A: The quickest way is to call me directly at 424-234-6080 or email me at lisasnaturals@icloud.com. You can check out my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lisasnaturals
Shop: https://lisasnaturals.etsy.com

MB WEEKLY – INVESTIGATES: Summertime Flash Mobs

Startled employees and customers instantly dialed 911 as brazen gangs of robbers in all-black attire and hoodies dashed into South Bay shopping centers. It didn’t come fast enough. Even a quick law enforcement reaction may be insufficient due to stealth preparation, disguises, the sheer speed at which criminals steal – they are in and out in two to four minutes – and multiple car getaways. Since early July, flash mobs of thieves in high-end and other establishments around Southern California have carried out scores of heists. As a result, authorities created a task team to focus on cell tower dumps, CCTV footage, and other high-tech tools. Arrests are beginning to take place. But it might take more time to reverse the trend.

Manhattan Beach’s Dr. Laura Berman Of Oprah Suing Snapchat Over 16-Year-Old Son’s Fentanyl Death:

In TV appearances, Laura Berman is a therapist focusing on relationships and sexuality. She has raised three boys at home in Manhattan Beach, California. She was yet another mother dealing with heartache when one, 16-year-old Sammy, passed away from fentanyl toxicity caused by cocaine mixed with the synthetic opiate that he purchased from a dealer on Snapchat. She is now trying to save other parents from experiencing the same fate. She is one of 64 parents suing Snap, Snapchat’s parent company, for product liability after their children died from drug overdoses, and she is advocating for the passing of Sammy’s Law, which will enable parents to be informed when “dangerous content is on their devices.” She has also met with Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap, to push for change. “Our youngest son found Sammy in his room,” Berman recalled the incident from 2021 – Sunday of the Super Bowl. Sammy and the drug dealer communicated over Snapchat.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia (El Segundo)

Contrary to popular belief, cannabis use can lead to addiction, like other narcotics like alcohol or cocaine. More people than ever before are smoking cannabis as more states either decriminalize it or make it legal. Approximately 19% of Americans aged 12 and older used cannabis in 2021, and nearly 6% of teens and adults met the criteria for cannabis use disorder, which is the official term for addiction. (By way of contrast, approximately 11% of Americans over the age of 11 suffer from an alcohol consumption disorder.)
