The Manhattan Council Considers Two Begg Pool Improvement Ideas:
Two Begg Pool makeover proposals were presented to the Manhattan Beach City Council. Option 1 includes the renovation of the existing structures to update the outdated pool complex, maintaining its small 25-yard pool. Option 2 includes the construction of a new building, a new 35-meter (varying from 3.5’ to 8’ deep) pool, and a new 25-yard recreational pool (varying from 3.5’ to 4.5’ deep) along with associated sitework. This option also includes a new support building for pool equipment and storage. Construction is anticipated to be 18 months, according to the report. The first idea cost about $28 million, the second about $40 million. Because of the high price tag, Council approved to accept doing a pool poll of other options, and to find out the cost to keep the pool operating safely in the meantime for the next two to three years with needed repairs.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Meet Cathy Hobart
(Friend of MB Safe)
Q: WHEN DID YOU FIRST ARRIVE IN MANHATTAN BEACH, AND WHY?
A: I moved to Manhattan Beach when I got married in 2000.
Q: WHAT DREW YOU TO BECOME ACTIVE IN MB SAFE?
A: When I first heard about MB SAFE, I was very skeptical. The more I learned, the more impressed I was with the four amazing women who created this organization. They are focused on helping people struggling with homelessness by connecting them to services and housing. They do not believe we should leave people on the streets. Keeping the community safe is also their priority. MB SAFE has its own caseworker, Rita Crabtree-Kampe, who helps coordinate all the efforts currently happening in our community. I have been searching LA County for more groups/organizations similar to MB SAFE but have only found a few. Most cities do not have a group like MB SAFE because it takes a lot of time and commitment to successfully create and maintain this type of organization. I met with a group of caseworkers here in the Beach Cities who said they wished every city had a group like MB SAFE. It would help them get people off the streets more quickly by filling the gaps that the government doesn’t meet.
Q: WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED FROM WORKING WITH MB SAFE?
A: The homeless issue is complicated. We have a team that cares about people struggling and our community. The situation in California would be completely different if every community had an organization like MB SAFE.
Q: HOW CAN READERS HELP MB SAFE?
A: This nonprofit directly helps people in our community. Here are a few ways that readers can help MB SAFE…
- Donate!! Their Venmo is @Mbsafe90266donate. If you care about people who are struggling with homelessness and want to help get them off the streets immediately, donate to MB SAFE. They directly help the people in our community.
- Spread the word about this organization with other residents, local businesses, and neighboring communities. The majority of MB Residents have no idea that this organization exists or what they do. The website is www.mbsafe.org
- Host a roundtable discussion in your home and have MB SAFE help answer questions and share ideas on how to help with the homeless situation. If anyone would like to host one of these discussions, email… Mbsafe@outlook.com
Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
A: Ventura, California.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR ASTROLOGY SIGN?
A: Taurus.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: I love movies! Too many to count. Favorite holiday movies… Elf & Love Actually.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: Strand House, Mangiamo, Petros, Izaka-Ya.

May Makeover For Manhattan Beach Concrete:
The Citywide Concrete Repairs Project will affect Manhattan Beach pathways during May. Pathways include along 6th Street and 7th Place between Highland Avenue and Valley Drive, and the section of The Strand alongside the staircase at 21st Street that was washed out by rain and address water that is ponding below the Sepulveda Bridge. Weekday construction will occur from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. “Access to parking and driveways may be restricted intermittently during this time, and pedestrian pathway width will be reduced,” the city said in a release.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR BEST HABIT, AND WHAT IS YOUR WORST ONE?
A: Best: Fairly regular exercise / Worst: Procrastinate about exercising.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST INDULGENCE?
A: Time with our kids and grandkids.
Q: WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE CREATIVELY STUCK?
A: Run on the beach. That’s where and when I get some good ideas.
Q: HOW DO YOU EXERCISE?
A: Biking on the beach bike path; running on the soft sand; lifting weights with my friends.
Q: HOW DO YOU UNPLUG?
A: See above.
Q: IS THERE A BOOK YOU’D RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE?
A: “Rich Dad-Poor Dad” Teaches financial literacy.
Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
A: Get a mentor or several mentors. You can benefit greatly from their perspectives and life lessons.
Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PODCAST?
A: Not much time to listen to them. It’s on my list to explore them more.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR MANTRA?
A: It’s a bit silly but I made this up for me when I was on long bike rides (usually going up hills at the end of a century ride) and have used it for my kids and now my grandkids when we are walking, running or riding bikes up hills: We LOVE hills, they make us STRONGER. We LOVE hills, we want them LONGER. It teaches how you get strong by stretching yourself and not to give up because you are stronger than you think.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT REVIEW:
by Darby Winston
Joey Restaurant Manhattan Village
The cheeseburger at Joey restaurant in Manhattan Village, Manhattan Beach, is a delightful surprise in a sea of overpriced options. Priced at $20, it’s a refreshing deviation from the norm as it lives up to its value. The burger is a symphony of flavors, with juicy, perfectly cooked beef nestled between layers of cheese, ripe tomatoes, pickles and a toasted bun that adds just the right amount of crunch. I found each bite a journey of satisfaction, leaving you craving more. Joey’s cheeseburger is not just a meal; it’s an experience worth savoring, making every penny well spent.

You will see the word TEP in the image above. This stands for the Teacher Education Program at UCLA Center X. They have an education program for upcoming ethnic studies teachers. UCLA Center X also has professional development, where MBUSD teachers have received anti-bias (DEI) training. Center X is also where the California History-Social Science project is housed. This is a state resource whose hub is in UC Davis. They have outposts at UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Berkeley, Santa Cruz, and Irvine. They provide training for ethnic studies teachers and a line ES curriculum for all k-12 teachers (the public can access it, too). Cathey Graves, MBUSB board member, said that Costas ethnic studies committee leaders attended a UC Berkeley teacher training session last summer. … what are these teachers told? What is the position of Israel?

Friendship Campus In Redondo Beach Marks Construction Milestone:
Recently, the Friendship Foundation celebrated halfway through construction on its state-of-the-art campus, which will train and place neuro-divergent people. The 62,000-square-foot complex on more than three acres in Redondo Beach received its last steel beam in a “Topping Off” ceremony. Celebration attendees signed the beam beforehand. New campus development is anticipated to conclude in autumn 2025, and funding is nearly complete. Executive Director Yossi Mintz said the organization has received $50 million of the $55 million required to create the new campus. At the May celebration with local leaders and scores of supporters, Mintz said everyone’s participation is important because they don’t want to take any financing or debt. “We want to spend the money on the kids and young adults. That is our objective and commitment.” The Friendship Campus will teach neuro-divergent kids and young adults how to live independently in their communities. Digital media, visual arts, and a Culinary Arts Center will prepare students for hospitality and culinary jobs. Student financial literacy and mentoring will be stressed.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Evelyn B. (A Manhattan Beach Business Owner)
As a conscientious business owner, my recent encounter with the Labor Board in downtown L.A. was nothing short of alarming. The experience resembled a biased kangaroo court, leaving me feeling unjustly vilified. It’s baffling how an employee can effortlessly recall details of alleged overtime, missed lunches, or breaks spanning years without a shred of tangible evidence. The absence of notes, records, or time-clock documentation makes these claims akin to creative fiction. Despite lacking substantiation, such allegations are disturbingly legitimized by the biased anti-employer system. This ordeal evoked parallels to the injustices faced by minorities in the segregated South of the 1950s. The discrepancy between the burden of proof placed on employers versus employees is stark and unjust. It underscores the dire need for a fair and balanced approach to resolving labor disputes, one that respects the rights of both parties and upholds the principles of honesty and integrity.

I was approached today by a homeless young man. He wore a faded black hoody, dirty black jeans, and a beard. He is thin and asked for money and my phone to call his mom on Mother’s Day. He wanted money and a phone.

Fuming with rage over my husband’s incessant demand for skimpier outfits, I’m seething at the audacity. I’ve always dressed to feel good, not to be some eye candy. Leggings? Sure, but with a damn long top – common sense, right? Yet, he’s pushing for this skin-baring spectacle. I’m no prude, but I won’t be his walking mannequin. His “guy instinct” claim is infuriating. I tried, but it’s just uncomfortable not empowering. My wardrobe isn’t up for debate, and I won’t bow to this pressure. It’s my body, my choice and his relentless badgering is a disrespectful affront to my utonomy.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Sara Garcia (El Segundo)
The ideological chasm between liberals and conservatives in Manhattan Beach is often portrayed starkly.
“CONSERVATIVES GENERALLY PERCEIVE LIBERALS AS NAIVE IDEALISTS, WHILE LIBERALS GENERALLY VIEW CONSERVATIVES AS EVIL, SELFISH, AND LACKING COMPASSION.”
Conservatives generally perceive liberals as naive idealists, while liberals generally view conservatives as evil, selfish, and lacking compassion. This divide is not merely a clash of political perspectives but values and worldviews. Liberals prioritize empathy and social justice, often relying on emotional appeals to drive their arguments. Conversely, conservatives usually emphasize the importance of tradition, personal responsibility, and logical reasoning to guide policy decisions. Both liberals and conservatives are driven by a desire to create a better society, albeit through different means and interpretations of what constitutes progress. All this said, it is worth remembering that “the path to Hell is paved with good intention.”
