MB WEEKLY EXCLUSIVE:
“CRASH CORNERS”
MB READERS SELECT THE 5 WORST INTERSECTIONS IN MANHATTAN BEACH

According to MB Weekly readers, the following areas, mainly along Sepulveda Boulevard, were listed as the Top 5 Worst Intersections in Manhattan Beach. Sepulveda Boulevard, according to the city, “is a major transportation corridor for the South Bay region. In Manhattan Beach, this corridor runs north-south through the heart of the City…” The crash history along the two miles of Sepulveda Boulevard in Manhattan Beach saw two fatalities in 2025 and 12 injuries, according to Parking and Public Improvements Commission in March 2026. The segment between Manhattan Beach Boulevard to Marine Avenue saw the highest crash rate (involving either death, injury or both).

1. Sepulveda Boulevard & Manhattan Beach Boulevard

2. Sepulveda Boulevard & 10th Street

3. Sepulveda Boulevard & Marine Avenue

4. 6th Street & Valley Drive

5. Highland Avenue & Rosecrans Avenue

What intersections did we leave out?

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
South Bay Smooch Study – MB Weekly Poll Finds 31% of Local Women Have Kissed Another Woman

A new MB Weekly reader poll has produced a result that might raise a few eyebrows along the South Bay shoreline: 31% of local women say they have kissed another woman at least once. While the number may surprise some, the finding is consistent with broader academic studies on female sexuality. Many social scientists describe female sexuality as more “fluid” than male sexuality, meaning women are statistically more likely than men to report occasional same-sex experimentation without changing their sexual identity. In other words, a kiss does not necessarily reflect how someone ultimately defines their orientation. The South Bay’s relaxed beach culture may also play a role. With a younger population, vibrant nightlife, and generally open attitudes toward personal expression, social experimentation is hardly unusual.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Stefan Kampe
(President, Leadership MB)

Q: LEADERSHIP MANHATTAN BEACH BRINGS TOGETHER SOME OF THE CITY’S MOST ACTIVE CIVIC LEADERS. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE SEPARATES TRUE LEADERSHIP FROM SIMPLY HOLDING A TITLE IN A COMMUNITY LIKE MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: True leadership goes far beyond a title. It begins with a clear vision – an understanding of what you want to achieve and the ability to communicate that vision in a way that inspires others. A true leader brings passion, conviction, and enthusiasm, and they listen, learn, and adjust as needed. Most importantly, they lead by example and motivate their team to pursue shared goals with purpose.

Q: IN A TOWN KNOWN FOR STRONG OPINIONS AND PASSIONATE RESIDENTS, HOW DO YOU TEACH EMERGING LEADERS TO LISTEN THOUGHTFULLY WHILE STILL HAVING THE COURAGE TO TAKE DECISIVE ACTION?
A: Leadership Manhattan Beach is a nine‑month program that meets every other week, and we intentionally balance learning with hands‑on experience. In the first half, participants explore how the city works, discover opportunities for civic involvement, learn about personality types, and discuss the fundamentals of leadership. In the second half, the class becomes a functioning project team – selecting, funding, and delivering a meaningful contribution to Manhattan Beach or the greater South Bay. With defined roles, deadlines, and peer leadership, participants learn to listen, collaborate, and ultimately make confident decisions.

Q: WHAT MOMENT DURING YOUR TIME WITH LEADERSHIP MANHATTAN BEACH MADE YOU REALIZE THE PROGRAM WAS TRULY SHAPING THE CITY’S FUTURE LEADERSHIP?
A: My first real understanding of LMB’s impact came when my wife, Rita Crabtree‑Kampe, joined the Class of 2022. Through her experience, I saw how many of our City Council members, commissioners, civic leaders, and city employees were LMB alumni. More recently, I spoke with a member of the Class of 2026 who had just retired and joined the program specifically to learn how he could give back. Moments like these make it clear that LMB is cultivating the next generation of community leaders.

Q: MANY LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS FOCUS ON THEORY. HOW DOES LEADERSHIP MANHATTAN BEACH ENSURE THAT PARTICIPANTS LEAVE NOT JUST INSPIRED, BUT ACTUALLY PREPARED TO SOLVE REAL COMMUNITY PROBLEMS?
A: Inspiration is essential, however, it’s only the starting point. Many Manhattan Beach residents don’t initially know how to get involved, so the first half of our program helps them understand the city and envision a future role for themselves. Hearing directly from current community leaders gives them real examples of what’s possible. The class project then provides practical experience working as part of a project team. Many alumni go on to serve on LMB’s Board, join civic or philanthropic organizations, lead youth sports, or pursue roles as commissioners or even City Council members. The program opens doors to countless pathways for civic engagement.

Q: LOOKING TEN YEARS AHEAD, WHAT KIND OF LEADERS DO YOU HOPE LEADERSHIP MANHATTAN BEACH WILL PRODUCE – AND HOW MIGHT THAT CHANGE THE FUTURE OF OUR COMMUNITY?
A: Manhattan Beach is special because of its sea, sun, surf, and – most importantly – its people. I hope LMB continues to develop leaders who are committed to preserving our small‑town feel, strengthening our sense of community, and embracing philanthropy. Over the next decade, we’ll face significant change driven by technology, including AI, as well as increasing pressure to densify coastal communities. My hope is that our future leaders will have the expertise, experience, and resolve to understand these challenges and make thoughtful, sometimes difficult decisions that protect and enhance what makes Manhattan Beach such an extraordinary place to live.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Tim Hageman (Retired MBPD Captain & Manhattan Beach Resident)

The men and women of the Manhattan Beach Police Department deserve our strong and continued support. As a Manhattan Beach resident and retired member of the MBPD, I am proud of the work they do and the service they provide to our community. Public safety is a top priority for our city, and I have great confidence in the department’s ability to protect our residents. The commitment to run toward danger, rather than away from it, reflects the courage and professionalism of those who wear the badge. Policing is not only demanding and often dangerous, but it also requires dedication, integrity, and a desire to serve others. I am grateful for the officers at every rank – from officer to chief – who serve Manhattan Beach. Even when I may disagree with a decision or proposal, my respect for their work and my support for their mission remain unwavering.

Smash, Grab … And Busted – Lego Bandit’s $5K Bookstore Heist Crumbles:

A smash-and-grab burglar accused of swiping more than $5,000 in merchandise from a Manhattan Beach bookstore has been arrested, police said. The March 7 break-in targeted a Barnes & Noble, where the suspect allegedly smashed a window to gain entry. Surveillance footage showed the masked man moving swiftly behind the cashier’s counter and grabbing boxes of high-end Lego sets before fleeing.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Ed Kaminsky (Kaminsky Real Estate Group)

From the Beach Cities, the View Is Different: As a real estate professional in the South Bay, I’m seeing a tale of two markets. Locally – Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach – early 2026 has brought a notable uptick in demand. Pacific Palisades families displaced by fire are converting from rentals to purchases, and high-end buyers anticipating significant windfalls from the anticipated SpaceX IPO are actively entering the market. These micro-market forces are, for now, outpacing broader economic headwinds. Step outside our beach cities, however, and the picture changes. Venice, Santa Monica, West LA, Palos Verdes activity is muted. LA County overall is reportedly down roughly 15% in sales volume. Interestingly, stock market volatility is reinforcing real estate’s appeal as a portfolio stabilizer for high-net-worth buyers. That said, we all welcome lower rates, calmer markets, and peace. Time will tell.

Beach City Still Shines – Manhattan Beach Lands On California’s “Best Places” List:

Manhattan Beach continues to prove its coastal appeal, earning the No. 54 spot on Niche’s 2026 Best Places to Live in California rankings. The data-driven report evaluated communities using metrics from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alongside millions of resident reviews. Despite fierce competition, Manhattan Beach’s strong schools, coastal lifestyle, and high quality of life continue to make it one of California’s most desirable places to call home.

THE MB WHISPERER:

***Is it me, or have certain… shall we say enhancements gone the way of flip phones in the South Bay? A decade ago, it felt like a competitive sport. Now? Pilates and green juice have apparently won.  ***I just finished Source Code, and let’s say young Bill Gates probably wasn’t storming prom night. Brilliant? Yes. Heartthrob? Let’s not get carried away.  ***Meanwhile, why do so many “fine dining” spots in Manhattan Beach treat the front desk like a social experiment in awkward silence? First impressions matter – just not, apparently, here.  ***And the MB Weekly Free Bulletin Board? Equal parts comedy gold and late-night confession booth. You do wonder about the blood-alcohol content behind some submissions.  ***That said, Uncle Bill’s Pancake House remains delightfully unchanged – comfort food for both stomach and soul.  ***Finally, as a loving but exhausted aunt, I’m rooting hard for South Bay Classical Academy. If anyone can straighten out my niece… It’s Plato.  ***Have a tip for The MB Whisperer, send it to: MBWeekly@TimeWire.net

MB Budget – There is a problem facing any council candidate that runs on cutting the budget. It will have to include headcount, salaries and pension costs. That will raise the ire of the employee unions (including the teacher’s union, even though they are separate from the city budget). The result will be overwhelming negative advertising and publicity. “Friendlier” candidates will get support.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Mark Burton (Former MB Mayor)

MB City Council Won’t Explore Adopting a City Charter: As you may know, for several years now I have consistently and zealously advocated that our MB City Councils adopt City Charter, in essence a city’s constitution. At a time of extensive State overreach to usurp local control, I can’t think of a more appropriate time to do so. Although our feckless MB City Council has held steadfast to the “status quo” general law city model wherein our City is legally bound to follow the general laws adopted by the City, the City of El Segundo is moving forward with exploring adopting a City Charter. Imagine that? Our neighbor to the north has the political will and intelligence to know that adopting a City Charter is a “no-brainer”. Several of our most recent City Councils have been “go along to get along” City Councils, who cling to the status quo out of fear of “rocking the boat”. These Councils clearly do not zealously advocate for the needs of our residents, not when they can stay in office for more than two terms with several serving three, four and five terms. That’s a lot of time with nothing really getting done as far as protecting and preserving the quality of life that our residents cherish. If this Council is truly interested in serving our residents, who are well educated and sophisticated, then they should explore adopting a City Charter, post haste!

1. ** Concerned about the high-rises going up on Rosecrans and on Sepulveda near Second Street? If you vote Democrat, you have no one to blame but yourself. There’s nothing we can do about it. Democrat one-party rule in Sacramento is responsible for overturning local city zoning ordinances. —- TJF, Manhattan Beach

2. ** At Thursday’s City traffic meeting on Sepulveda, officials claimed the road can handle more cars. Maybe. But capacity isn’t the issue—speed is. Add high-rise apartments, and you get dangerous entry points, congestion, and service strain. It’s not just volume; it’s safety, flow, and common sense being ignored. —- Mark Burton, Manhattan Beach

3. ** ROOM FOR RENT IN MANHATTAN BEACH: Private bedroom and bath in a townhouse, with bedrooms on separate levels for added privacy. Available NOW. Enjoy pool and jacuzzi access. Ideal South Bay living. If interested – or know someone – please email nancysgolf@aol.com today. Great location, comfort, and convenience all in one place.

4. ** Gather your table guests – the Manhattan Wine Auction returns for its 32nd year. Secure a Center Court Experience and enjoy an unforgettable evening supporting Manhattan Beach schools. Invite friends, clients, or your book club and reserve your spot at the heart of the celebration. Great wine, great cause – don’t miss it. —- Mira Costa PTSA

5. ** Liberals claim to be tolerant of other views but are shocked and offended to discover there are other views. —- Randi P.

6. ** I can’t help but wonder why poor little Stewart Fournier has a fetish for MB Weekly? —- S.H., Manhattan Beach

7. ** I’ve been a loyal customer of Steve’s Lock and Key in Manhattan Beach for decades, but a recent visit was incredibly disappointing. I was quoted $2.50 per key to stamp a letter – something that takes seconds. When I questioned it, I was told to take it or leave. I left. Redondo Lock and Key in Redondo Beach did the same work and didn’t charge for stamping. They’ve earned a new loyal customer – Steve’s has lost one for good. —- Russ L., Manhattan Beach

8. ** MB Weekly has the sweet voice of reason. —- Heather R.

9. ** I wonder if the City will actually lay off the 2 full time meter repair people once this is put in place. Also, the company charges each meter user $.35 per use. At that rate, they should be giving the City all of the equipment for free and not charging the City for its use. However, it is still costing us $2.9 million in capital costs. I don’t know if this is the great deal the city staff says it is. —- Paul Wafer

10. ** Women win! The International Olympic Committee will re-implement sex screening with the 2028 games to protect the female category. That this was ever controversial is mind-blowing. —- Alison S., Manhattan Beach

11. ** A shout-out to Councilman Steve Charelian for responding to Paul Wafer’s request for city budget information. As the City’s former Director of Finance, Councilman Charelian is well-versed in budget planning and management and can provide informed answers to questions posed. —- Howard F., Manhattan Beach

12. ** Progressives don’t predict outcomes – they workshop fantasies. Reality, meanwhile, has been running a 10,000-year beta test on human behavior, and spoiler alert: it’s not trending their way. Hope is lovely. Evidence is stubborn. Yet somehow, history keeps getting ghosted while utopia RSVPs “definitely attending” and never, ever shows up. —- Steve N., Manhattan Beach

13. ** Warm, loving retired teacher, 75, fabulous cook and baker, seeks nurturing home share. I offer healthy home-cooked meals, good company, companionship, and a clean, organized household. Would love a small garden to tend in exchange for rent. If this resonates or feels right, please call Linda at 310-717-3329

14. ** Watch out for the Bank of America ATM at Manhattan Village. My wife’s account was drained of nearly $2,000 after using it this week, due to multiple fraudulent withdrawals. There may be a skimmer installed. Protect yourself: use RFID access when possible or choose a different ATM location for now. —- Name Withheld by Request, Manhattan Beach

15. ** For years, petitioners have targeted the homeless on Skid Row, offering cigarettes or cash for signatures that can shape California law. Even more troubling, some have reportedly registered homeless individuals to vote using questionable or fraudulent information – raising serious concerns about exploitation, ethics, and the integrity of the process. —- Dale W., Hermosa Beach

16. ** Did you know the City of LA is raising your trash & parking fees to make up for their mismanagement of your tax dollars? Are you surprised? —- Rick M.

17. ** Mira Costa’s young creatives take center stage April 24 at Resin Gallery. From 6–8pm, explore bold student artwork, live music, and a festive taco truck vibe. Don’t miss the “Rising Artists” showcase – one unforgettable night celebrating the next generation of talent. —- Mira Costa High School

19. ** Big applause to Mira Costa’s own Mrs. Lisa Cook, named 2026 Teacher of the Year! A brilliant English teacher, inspiring leader, and champion of student success, she sets the gold standard in the classroom. Her passion, innovation, and dedication truly make a lasting impact. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor! —- Mira Costa High School
