MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
MONEY TALKS – 83% OF MB WEEKLY READERS SUPPORT FINANCIAL LITERACY IN SOUTH BAY HIGH SCHOOLS

In a decisive show of support for real-world education, 83% of MB Weekly readers say their state should require a semester or year-long personal finance course for high school graduation in the South Bay. The reader poll, conducted by MB Weekly, highlights growing concern that students are graduating without essential skills in budgeting, credit management, saving, investing, and understanding debt. With college loans, credit cards, and rising living costs facing young adults immediately after graduation, voters made it clear: financial literacy is no longer optional – it’s essential. Supporters argue that teaching teens how to balance a checkbook, understand compound interest, and avoid predatory lending could dramatically impact long-term financial stability. The strong majority signals a community eager to see schools prioritize practical life skills alongside academics.

Rosecrans Reimagined – 500 Apartments To Rise As Office Building Faces Demolition:

A major transformation is coming to Manhattan Beach’s Rosecrans corridor. An aging 78,000-square-foot office building at 1440 Rosecrans Avenue is slated for demolition to make way for a sweeping new multifamily residential complex, according to a notice published by the Manhattan Beach Community Development Department. The five-acre site, owned by Fairfield Residential, will be redeveloped into six- and seven-story buildings containing 500 apartment units and parking for 800 vehicles. Of those units, 100 will be designated for low-income residents, qualifying the project for development incentives that allow greater density than is typically permitted. The proposal stems from the City’s Residential Overlay District, adopted as part of Manhattan Beach’s 6th Cycle Housing Element in March 2023. The overlay allows housing to be built by-right on select commercial corridors, including Rosecrans and Sepulveda. Fairfield’s project is expected to be one of several residential developments reshaping the Rosecrans skyline in the coming years.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Nick Moreno
(Rock’N Fish General Manager)

Q: IF THE MANHATTAN BEACH PIER COULD TALK, WHAT DO YOU THINK IT WOULD SAY ABOUT ROCK N’ FISH AFTER ALL THESE YEARS?
A: If the Manhattan Beach pier could talk to Rock N’ Fish I believe that they would talk like old, reminiscing friends. After 25 years together delighting both our community and those visiting our community, watching families grow up and sunsets go down, the Manhattan Beach pier would raise a glass of our World Famous Navy Grog and toast to “25 more years.”

Q: EVERY GREAT RESTAURANT HAS A PERSONALITY. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ROCK N’ FISH’S “VIBE” IN THREE WORDS – AND HOW DO YOU PROTECT THAT AS GENERAL MANAGER?
A: Welcoming, Local, Fresh. At Rock N’ Fish our goal is to create a happy escape for everyone that walks through our doors, and that includes the members of our amazing team as well. Our management team strives to ensure that every member of our team feels included and seen as an integral part of the success of the restaurant. When you choose to spend time with us you will find a local restaurant filled with genuine smiling employees; and that is directly related to the fact that the team is happy to be here, enthusiastic to share our amazing fresh seafood with our guests, and proud of the hospitality we provide day in and day out.

Q: YOU’VE SEEN TRENDS COME AND GO – MENUS, COCKTAILS, CROWDS. WHAT’S ONE CLASSIC ROCK N’ FISH PRINCIPLE YOU REFUSE TO MESS WITH, NO MATTER HOW FASHIONS CHANGE?
A: I first started in hospitality 26 years ago and have seen trends come and go, but the one consistent principle that will never change is hospitality. Rock N’ Fish takes pride in its warm, empathetic commitment to delighting our guests. Whether you are coming off a day at the beach, having a quick layover at LAX, or meeting friends and family for dinner, we value and appreciate each and every one of our guests and strive to make their day better than it was before they stopped in.

Q: WHO WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE DINNER WITH, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN OR BOB DYLAN?
A: I am actually a Stevie Wonder guy!

WHAT IS A LOCAL ISSUE THAT YOU HAVE CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT?

** PAUL WAFER (MB Community Activist): I used to think that our city council members were non-political arbiters, with the best interests of our citizens in mind.

** WAYNE POWELL (Former MB Mayor/Councilmember): When I was Mayor, a Broad Beach Malibu residents group tried to dredge (literally steal) 500,000 cubic yards of our vital Manhattan Beach coastal sand to solve their beach erosion problem. I was told by our City Attorney that because we didn’t own offshore sand there was nothing we could do about it. I was also the Chair of the L.A. County Beach Commission and I initially agreed that our hands were tied. However, I changed my mind and decided to fight back. I created a public shame campaign (“Save Our Sand” or “SOS”) and was interviewed by numerous local TV reporters, newspapers and even a CBS network TV news show. Because of all the adverse publicity, I eventually convinced (shamed) the Broad Beach residents group and their lawyers to get their sand elsewhere.

Little League Kicks Off With Downtown Splash:

The Manhattan Beach Little League celebrated Opening Day on February 21, by reviving its beloved downtown parade tradition – a ritual that dates back to 1960. City Treasurer Tim Lilligren fondly recalled lining up as a young player with the Breaker’s Restaurant Beavers in front of the old lumber yard, now home to Vons. This year’s staging area shifted to the Shade Hotel, where coffee and rolls were served to families and neighbors before the march began. The Mira Costa High School Marching Band and Color Guard led the parade, followed by city dignitaries in classic cars. Lilligren rode in a midnight blue 1967 Pontiac GTO convertible, waving to cheers along the route.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Russ Lesser (Former MB Mayor)

In 1980 Manhattan Beach was experiencing over 100 residential burglaries a month. My wife Charlotte had learned about how a Neighborhood Watch program works. She founded our Manhattan Beach program and headed it up for forty five years until retiring recently. The program has had many positive effects. It helps neighbors meet each other and become a real “neighborhood.” It teaches people how to work with their neighbors to make their homes safer. It teaches people how to respond when a burglary is being committed. Suzanne Hadley pointed out that when her break-in was commencing she knew what to do because of the training she had received as a neighborhood watch block captain. Most of the blocks in Manhattan Beach have a block captain. Everyone should know who their block captain is and if they need training to make their homes and neighborhood safer they should contact the police department to hold a training meeting.

MB WEEKLY – Q&A:
Greg Newman
(President/CEO – Baja Sharkeez Restaurant Group)

Greg Newman with Wife Erika

Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
A: Inglewood, Ca, but I moved to south Hermosa Beach when I was 1 year old. 1969 which was a very interesting place to spend the 70’s.

Q: WHAT IS THE “SECRET SAUCE” BEYOND THE SUCCESS OF ESPERANZA?
A: It starts with the food which is traditional Sonoran style Mexican mixed with coastal Baja seafood dishes. All the stuff we grew up with in California just done with the best ingredients. Familiar comfort meets high end Manhattan Beach tastes. Our Mixology team works nonstop with all the New Mexican coastal and tropical drink trends. We also work with one of the best interior designers in the business, Gulla Jonsdottir. Combined with the best marketing and PR strategies born from 33 years of experience and hyper focus on customer service.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL RESTAURANT TODAY IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: In our location downtown if we give a superior product delivered with impeccable customer service there is no shortage of customers, maybe the most challenging part might be the high costs attributed to doing business in California. Our labor alone runs 25% even with high volume. This $17 minimum wage was $11 a few short years ago.

Q: WHAT ARE THREE OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: Arthur J, Esperanza and Joey.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: Big Wednesday, surf movie.

Q: WHO WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE DINNER WITH, GEORGE WASHINGTON OR ABRAHAM LINCOLN?
A: Probably Lincoln since he dealt with so many huge obstacles, would love to analyze his thinking.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Mark Burton (Former MB Mayor)

Why do our City Council and past City Councils adamantly refuse to explore adopting a City Charter? Upon reflection, I think the primary reason is “partisan City Councilmembers.” Although City Councilmembers are required to be non-partisan and serve in the best interests of our residents, all too often, some are so partisan that they support their party’s position rather than serve in the best interests of our residents. Sad, but true. In alignment with their party, these “partisan City Councilmembers” support several State housing laws that allow for high-rise apartment building projects that will scar our skyline. They even refer to it as “community housing”! When it comes to opposing the State’s efforts to usurp local control of zoning with the enactment of several State housing laws, these same “partisan City Councilmembers” will tell our residents that “their hands are tied” or “there is nothing they can do.” Yet we all know that is not true, since they could adopt a City Charter, giving our City maximum local control over its municipal affairs, such as zoning. If you want a City Council that will serve in the best interests of our residents, then in the upcoming November City Council election, you need to vote for truly “non-partisan” candidates, candidates who have not served more than two terms, and candidates who will support adopting a City Charter. The future of our community will be determined in the upcoming November City Council election.

Hadley Double-Down – South Bay Republican Stands By Trump 2.0 After One Year of “Peace and Prosperity”:

David Hadley – husband of former Manhattan Beach Mayor Suzanne Hadley and former South Bay state Assemblyman – says he has no regrets about endorsing Donald Trump in October 2024 and sticking with his vote for “Trump 2.0” one year in. In a widely shared opinion column, Hadley credits the administration with economic strength, lower inflation and mortgage rates, and claims of reduced violent crime and drug deaths in 2025. He also highlights gains in military recruiting and in largely constitutional governance during Trump’s second term, pledging to outline his disagreements and offer advice in a follow-up piece. Supporters of the president’s policies point to initiatives targeting fentanyl trafficking and crime as part of a broader strategy to restore public safety. Critics note mixed economic signals, including late-2025 growth slowdowns and legal challenges to key tariff policies, underscoring divided views on Trump’s leadership. Hadley’s column frames the first year of Trump’s second presidency as successful, while promising a candid assessment of areas he believes need improvement.

Walk-Out At Mira Costa – MBUSD Urges Students To Stay, Clarifies Safety Protocols:

Following recent student walk-outs at Mira Costa High School, the Manhattan Beach Unified School District (MBUSD) has reaffirmed its expectation that students remain on campus for the full instructional day. When students leave campus without authorization, staff and security personnel will make reasonable efforts to monitor the situation from a safety perspective. According to the Superintendent’s newsletter: “MBUSD is aware of recent student civic engagement activities and walkouts at our secondary campuses. While state law protects students’ rights to expression, the District remains neutral on political matters and does not organize or endorse demonstrations. Student safety, instructional continuity, and adherence to attendance policies remain our priority. Classes continued as scheduled, and administrators were present to support campus supervision.”

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by B.D., MD

As a South Bay Doctor, I respectfully ask: Have you been to a doctor recently? If so, you’re part of a rapidly shrinking group of Americans who still trust the medical profession. In 1966, nearly three-quarters of the country expressed confidence in medical leaders. By 2022, that number had collapsed to barely one-third. Only one in five Americans now feels confident in the health-care system at all. This collapse didn’t happen by accident. Two recent stories explain why. One is grotesque: a Virginia nurse – thankfully fired – encouraged harming ICE agents with laxatives, paralytics, even poison ivy. Patients are now forced to wonder whether their caregiver sees them as human beings or as political avatars. The larger scandal is institutional. Medical schools increasingly emphasize ideological training over clinical judgment, boasting about courses on “microaggressions” while patients worry about competence, speed, and common sense in emergency rooms. Medicine is not a social-justice workshop. It is a sacred trust. When activism replaces neutrality, that trust shatters – and lives are put at risk.

Graveyard Shift Scores A “Hat Trick” Of Gun Busts In Manhattan Beach:

It was a busy holiday weekend for the Manhattan Beach Police Department’s graveyard crew – three separate loaded gun recoveries in less than 48 hours. The first stop came Saturday at 1 a.m. in El Porto, where a U-Haul driver on felony probation for assault was found with a loaded revolver on the passenger seat. Later that night downtown, officers stopped a vehicle carrying five occupants – none licensed – and recovered a loaded, unregistered handgun hidden under a backseat. By Monday at 10 p.m. near Sand Dune Park, officers discovered a loaded revolver concealed in a passenger’s purse during a parking enforcement contact. Beyond the gun arrests, MBPD handled 946 calls for service, made 15 arrests, and responded to 21 traffic collisions. Crimes included two residential burglaries – one netting $300,000 in stolen valuables – a robbery, auto theft, and a burglary suspect arrested near Bruce’s Beach.

TIGHTENING THE BELT:
MB FINANCIAL WATCHDOG UNVEILS “THE WAFER PLEDGE” AHEAD OF CITY COUNCIL RACE

With the November City Council election on the horizon, MB Financial watchdog Paul Wafer has thrown down a fiscal gauntlet, announcing what he calls “The Wafer Pledge” – a two-part litmus test for earning its endorsement and vote. Under the pledge, only candidates who commit to immediate, measurable reform will receive support. First, candidates must promise to push for at least a 10% reduction in the city’s current operational budget, implemented over one year. The goal: free up funding for long-delayed capital improvements while avoiding new taxes, fees, or property assessments. Second, candidates must pledge to restore a permanent two-term limit for all City Council members, a move supporters say would curb complacency and encourage fresh leadership. Wafer argues that the city government has grown too comfortable with rising costs and too reluctant to demand accountability from management, staff, and elected officials alike. The Wafer Pledge is designed to reverse that culture. “If voters believe meaningful change is needed at City Hall, this is the moment to demand it,” urging residents to press candidates directly on whether they will take the pledge. As the campaign season heats up, The Wafer Pledge is likely to sharpen contrasts between candidates – and put fiscal discipline squarely at the center of the debate.

Paula Tabalipa
(Tabalipa Wine / Founder)

Q: TABALIPA ROSÉ IS DEEPLY CONNECTED TO THE LAND. CAN YOU DESCRIBE A MOMENT IN THE VINEYARD WHEN YOU TRULY FELT THAT BOND BETWEEN SOIL, VINE, AND WINE?
A: The very first moment I stepped onto the land, I felt an immediate connection. It brought me back to my roots and awakened a deep curiosity – to listen, to learn, to understand the language of the vineyard. It was love at first sight and the beginning of a journey I knew I needed to explore.

Q: YOU CHOSE TO FOCUS ON LIMITED-PRODUCTION ROSÉ, WHICH IS BOTH INTENTIONAL AND A LITTLE DARING. WHAT DREW YOU TO ROSÉ AS YOUR PRIMARY EXPRESSION, AND WHAT DOES IT ALLOW YOU TO SAY THAT OTHER WINES DON’T?
A: When we acquired the vineyard, all 18 acres were planted to Syrah. I had learned from a friend that the previous owner had made an incredible rosé as a wedding gift, and that inspired me to start there. At the time, launching with rosé made sense – it ages for about seven months, while our estate red required much more time. It allowed us to introduce the vineyard while patiently working toward the red. Since then, so much has evolved. We’ve grafted the vineyard, added new varietals, and most recently launched our Sauvignon Blanc, which I absolutely love.

Q: LIVING LIFE VINEYARD IS SUSTAINABLY FARMED. HOW DOES SUSTAINABILITY INFLUENCE NOT JUST HOW YOU GROW GRAPES, BUT HOW YOU THINK ABOUT LEGACY AND STEWARDSHIP?
A: For me, sustainability is about care. It’s about listening to the land, moving with its rhythm, and making thoughtful, intentional choices. Legacy isn’t about size – it’s about respect, responsibility, and leaving something meaningful behind.

Q: YOUR BRAND CELEBRATES FOOD, WINE, AND CONVERSATION. WHAT DOES THE PERFECT TABALIPA MOMENT LOOK LIKE TO YOU – WHO’S THERE, WHAT’S ON THE TABLE, AND WHAT’S BEING TALKED ABOUT?
A: A perfect Tabalipa moment is simple: great people, deep conversations, lots of laughter, incredible food, and of course, a glass of wine shared together.

Q: “EMBRACING THE ART OF LIVING WELL” IS CENTRAL TO YOUR PHILOSOPHY. HOW HAS BUILDING TABALIPA CHANGED THE WAY YOU PERSONALLY SLOW DOWN, SAVOR LIFE, AND DEFINE SUCCESS?
A: It always comes back to the land – the rhythm and cycle of the vines. Winemaking requires patience, presence, and trust in time. Success, for me, is creating something meaningful that reflects who I am and how I choose to live.

Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
A: I was born in Brazil, but I’ve spent most of my life in California – and I couldn’t have chosen a better place to call home.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: That’s a tough question because I have many, but Il Postino has always stayed with me. It’s poetic, deeply human, and very much aligned with how I think about wine and life.

FORMER MAYORS OF MANHATTAN BEACH RESPOND TO SUZANNE HADLEY HOME INVASION:

** BOB HOLMES (former Mayor of Manhattan Beach): First, very sorry that Suzanne had to go through this disturbing experience. We are fortunate to have a good local police department that responds quickly. Many will disagree with my next comment, but I have a Smith and Wesson .357 magnum handy in case their response is not quick enough for my safety.

** WAYNE POWELL (former Mayor of Manhattan Beach): Nobody should be subjected to such an ordeal. Thank goodness for the rapid response by our exemplary police. While Manhattan Beach is a reasonably safe city, no city is totally immune from crime. Crime prevention measures such as perimeter lighting and a monitored alarm system (including glass break sensors) can reduce/mitigate the risk of break-ins. I believe our city would greatly benefit by utilizing foot and bicycle police patrols, as well as having more police officers and less administrators.

MB WEEKLY – HISTORY:

On Wednesday, February 14, 1962, the Manhattan Beach Police Department suffered a heartbreaking loss. Officer Richard Timothy Giles, just 29 years old, was killed in the line of duty. Moments earlier, he had been speaking with his best friend and fellow officer, Keith Basset. Then came the call. Officer Giles mounted his motorcycle and pursued a speeding vehicle down Sepulveda Boulevard. At Sixth Street, a car made a sudden left turn directly into his path. The collision was devastating. He suffered a broken neck and severe internal injuries. Rushed to South Bay Hospital, six doctors and three nurses worked for four hours to save him. Despite their efforts, Officer Giles passed away. A former employee of Douglas Aircraft Company, he joined MBPD on December 1, 1958, and the motorcycle division in 1961. He left behind a devoted wife and two young sons – and a grateful community that still remembers.

Manhattan Beach Sets National Gold Standard For Well-Being:

Manhattan Beach has officially become the healthiest community ever measured by Gallup. The city posted a remarkable 71.6 score on the 2025 Gallup National Health and Well-Being Index (WBI), the highest community score recorded since the index began in 2008. The milestone helped lift Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach to a combined historic high of 69.5, far above the national average of 60.1, according to the Beach Cities Health District. Gallup’s WBI measures career, community, financial, physical, and social well-being.

Q: WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST EXCUSE YOU’VE EVER HEARD FROM SOMEONE WHO CLEARLY NEEDED GLASSES BUT SWORE THEY DIDN’T?
A: Buying a bigger tv instead of getting glasses.

Q: MANHATTAN BEACH LIFESTYLE QUESTION: BEACH, SCREENS, OR AGING – WHAT’S DOING THE MOST DAMAGE TO OUR EYES RIGHT NOW?
A: Not protecting from the sun is still the greatest risk for health/damage. For overall vision, definitely screens. The incidence of Myopia (or near-sightedness, where distance images are blurry) is skyrocketing most likely due to screens and less outdoor time. We estimate that by the year 2050, half of the world’s population will be Myopic.

Q: IF YOU WEREN’T AN OPTOMETRIST, WHAT JOB DO YOU THINK YOUR PERSONALITY WAS DESTINED FOR INSTEAD?
A: Marine biologist.

Q: WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
A: Michigan (metro-Detroit)

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: Shawshank Redemption

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Russ Lesser (Former MB Mayor)

I agree with much of what this unknown former elected official says, especially about conservative people who can’t understand why far left people can’t see how socialism has failed every time it has been tried. However I don’t think all liberal people think conservatives are evil, only the far left. John Kennedy (“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”) would not recognize today’s Democratic Party and Ronald Reagan would not recognize some of the positions of today’s Republican Party.

Manhattan Beach Takes Policing Sky-High With Drone First Responder Program:

The Manhattan Beach Police Department is officially taking public safety to new heights. The Manhattan Beach City Council unanimously approved a two-year, $300,000 agreement with Flock Group, Inc. to launch a Drone as First Responder (DFR) program. The system enables drones to be dispatched directly from the Watch Commander’s Office to critical incidents, including priority 911 calls, search-and-rescue missions, high-risk operations, and large public events. The move represents a significant upgrade over current drone practices, which require officers to deploy equipment from patrol vehicles manually. Lieutenant Justin Hidalgo, who oversees the department’s unmanned aircraft systems, said the traditional method provides information only after incidents are underway, limiting its impact on initial response times. During a 10-hour demonstration with Flock, MBPD responded to 14 calls for service with an average response time of two minutes and 17 seconds. Drones arrived first 93% of the time. Officials say response times could improve further with Live911 integration, allowing launches even before dispatch formally creates a CAD incident.

Kindness Wanted – MB Weekly Puts Out The Call For Good Deeds Across Manhattan Beach:

MB Weekly is launching a new community initiative to shine a light on everyday kindness that often goes unnoticed. From small gestures to meaningful moments, acts of generosity and compassion happen daily throughout Manhattan Beach – and MB Weekly wants to hear about them. The MB Weekly Kindness Search invites residents to share stories of good deeds they’ve done, experienced, or witnessed recently. Whether it’s a neighbor lending a hand, a stranger offering unexpected help, or a simple act that brightens someone’s day, no moment is too small to matter. According to MB Weekly co-editor Darby Winston, the idea is simple but powerful. “It’s never too late to be kinder than necessary,” Winston said. Submissions are open now, and community members are encouraged to send their stories directly to MBWeekly@TimeWire.net. Selected stories may be featured in upcoming editions. In a world often dominated by bad news, MB Weekly hopes this effort reminds readers that kindness is alive, well, and right next door.

Hawthorne Man Busted In Nancy Guthrie Kidnap Hoax Freed Before Trial:

A Hawthorne man accused of sending fake ransom texts to the family of kidnapping victim Nancy Guthrie has been released from federal custody – even as serious charges loom. Derrick Callella, 42, appeared in federal court in Tucson on February 12, where prosecutors allege he transmitted a ransom demand across state lines and used a telecommunications device to threaten or harass anonymously, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Despite the allegations, Callella was released under pre-trial restrictions following the hearing. He refused to speak to reporters outside the courthouse, according to local stations KOLD and KVOA. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona confirmed his release in a statement.

1. ** For more than 40 years, Dive N’ Surf’s legendary Annual Yard Sale has been the South Bay tradition. This year it runs just 13 days – a short window to grab that new board, wetsuit, or summer gear and save serious $$$. Want details? Email web@divensurf.com – we’re happy to help! —- Dive N’ Surf

2. ** Tim Hageman’s article was eye-opening and another vivid example of everything that is wrong with our city government. Thanks for exposing this incomprehensible ruse on our citizens. —- Paul Wafer, Manhattan Beach

3. ** California’s pollution issues stem from geography that traps pollutants, high vehicle emissions, and wildfires, while Florida benefits from ocean breezes that bring cleaner air. To reduce pollutants, California has a low-carbon fuel standard and mandates a special gasoline blend designed to reduce pollution and improve air quality. These costs are reflected at the pump. So fuel burns cleaner but is more expensive to produce. —- Vida Holguin

4. ** Recently, you asked for feedback on AI in education. – Take a read. – https://shumer.dev/something-big-is-happening —- Kathy Adzich

5. ** Let’s be honest – the L.A. Times is pathetic. —- Ron Wall, El Segundo

6. ** Welcome to the “my feelings are everything” generation. Celebrities, athletes, influencers, teachers, politicians – performing for applause, not truth. Facts are optional; consequences are someone else’s problem. It’s all about likes, snaps, and social capital. Meanwhile, real problems fester. We’re trading courage for clout. Sad. Dangerous. Entirely predictable. —- Samuel R.

7. ** Sen. John Fetterman didn’t sugarcoat it during his CNN appearance. When pressed about the backlash he’s been receiving, he responded bluntly: “The right might call you names… but the left? They want me to die. They’re cheering for my next stroke.” —- Nanci R., Hermosa Beach

8. ** Hello neighbors, I have a duplex for rent/front house. 3-bed, 2-bath, newly renovated. $3,200.00 monthly rent in southwest Lawndale, pls call for a private tour. —- 424-781-0267

9. ** Extraordinary applause to Tim Hageman for his courageous commentary in MB Weekly! Clear, bold, and unapologetic. We don’t need a high-priced deputy police chief any more than the President needs a master class in boasting. Bravo, Mr. Hageman! —- J.F., Manhattan Beach

10. ** Heartbroken reading former Mayor Suzanne Hadley’s interview about her recent break-in. No one should feel violated in their own home. Suzanne, thank you for your courage and honesty in sharing your story to help others stay alert and prepared. Your transparency matters – and your strength inspires, Suzanne. —- Cindy Q.

11. ** Eleven Hermosa Beach business owners gathered around the Tiki Kai fire pit on a sweltering January afternoon, comparing notes on a wave of ADA and Unruh Act lawsuits demanding $10,000-$20,000. The filings are so frequent that many now view them not as justice but as extortion and a grim “cost of doing business.” —- Editor’s Note

12. ** We are collecting signatures to oppose the proposed 7-story, 60-unit development at 2nd Street and Sepulveda Boulevard in Manhattan Beach, with 25% designated as affordable housing. This high-density project would dramatically alter our neighborhood’s scale, traffic flow, safety, and overall quality of life. This is the only petition addressing this proposal. —- Name Withheld by Request, Manhattan Beach

13. ** Fred Taylor’s column is 1000% correct. Virtually every cost in California keeps climbing, and it’s beyond frustrating for families and small businesses alike. When you take an honest look at leadership at the City, County, and State levels, sadly, no one should be particularly surprised by the results. —- Zack Hamilton, Hermosa Beach

14. ** New York-style Yeastie Boys Bagels rolls into Manhattan Beach with its first local food truck at 451 Manhattan Beach Blvd. Starting at 8 a.m., bagels are FREE until sold out. Carb diem, South Bay. —- Editor’s Note

15. ** My first visit to the new restaurant Toranj in Manhattan Beach left me conflicted. The food was perfectly fine, reasonably flavorful, and nicely presented, but the service lagged. I even called the owner, Farbod, the following week to share feedback, and never heard back. That silence was disappointing. —- Devita D.

16. ** I’ve purchased two pairs of sneakers from Village Runner in Manhattan Beach. Yes, they’re expensive – but the quality is outstanding, and the customer service is truly superior – knowledgeable staff, no pressure, real expertise. You get what you pay for. In this case, it’s worth every penny. —- Clay T.

20. ** When I looked at the prices at Erewhon in Manhattan Beach, I honestly didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. —- Suzie T.

21. ** Some mornings I can’t believe my eyes. Elementary school teachers in El Segundo showing up in sweatpants and wrinkled T-shirts? Seriously? We ask kids to aim high, act sharp, and take pride – and this is the example? Standards used to matter. How principals allow it is beyond me. —- Melissa G., El Segundo

Q: COULD YOU EXPLAIN THE CONCEPT OF FIREWISEHOMES?
A: FirewiseHomes was born from a sense of professional responsibility following the devastating wildfires that impacted our Southern California communities. With 40 years of experience in the construction industry and a long-standing commitment to community service, I recognized that the need for resilient building practices has never been more urgent. Our core philosophy centers on environmental specificity; we design and engineer structures tailored to their unique surroundings. Whether building for coastal, mountain, or desert climates, our approach ensures that every home is purpose-built to withstand the specific challenges of its environment.

Q: WHAT IS THE COST RANGE FOR A PROJECT?
A: Investment levels vary significantly based on the scope of the project. Whether you are looking to meticulously reconstruct an existing design or embark on a completely new architectural concept, the costs will reflect those specific requirements. Because every environment and structure we build is unique, we recommend a preliminary consultation. This allows us to review your specific goals and provide a more accurate, tailored estimate for your project.

Q: HOW WAS THE CONCEPT DEVELOPED?
A: The concept was born out of a desire to help people streamline a rebuilding process that is often fraught with obstacles. It has been heartbreaking to watch homeowners face a secondary wave of challenges – navigating complex bureaucracy – long after the fires have been extinguished. With many properties still sitting dormant a year later, some owners have understandably begun to lose hope. FirewiseHomes was created to restore that hope by providing a clear, efficient path forward, ensuring that homeowners aren’t just rebuilding a structure, but reclaiming their future.

Q: WHERE CAN READERS GET MORE INFORMATION?
A: Would you like to start a consultation for a quick-turnaround floor plan to jumpstart your building process? Go to Firewisehomes.com and make a request or call the owner, Vinny, directly 310 809-4999.

2. ** One recent study found nurses made 49% worse decisions by shift’s end – not from physical exhaustion, but decision overload. Now ask yourself: what does that imply about police officers in the 11th hour of a 12-hour shift, making split-second, life-or-death calls under pressure? —- Dr. Mitchell B.

5. ** Reading MB Weekly is an excellent way to stay informed about Manhattan Beach events and news! —- Wayne Powell, Former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

6. ** My father was a cop on the beat in London in the 50s and 60s – he walked between 15-20 miles a day – lived to 92, and his legs were fine! Walking downtown hurts legs? Utter bollocks…!!! —- Ken A.

8. ** We need to raise the e-bike age minimum to 15 – now. I nearly got flattened by five middle school boys blasting past as I stepped off Beach Cities Transit in front of the old Fry’s. This is reckless, predictable, and dangerous. Someone will get hurt if we keep pretending it’s fine. —- Gabe J.

10. ** I hate the color purple. —- Jess O.

11. ** In my late 20s, I chased a Jack Johnson concert at The Gorge, five months in the planning. A breakup, a breakdown, a 4.5-hour drive – and tickets that weren’t tickets. Sold out. We landed in a tiny tavern instead. I met my husband that night. Best mistake I ever made, by pure chance. —- Jessica T.

12. ** Symbols matter. And right now, the forever-broken escalators at Metlox are a giant middle finger to standards in Manhattan Beach. City leaders should be embarrassed. If you can’t fix something this visible, this basic, this symbolic – what else are you ignoring? Disgraceful symbol to the City. —- W.A., Manhattan Beach

13. ** Disgraceful and likely illegal. El Segundo has lost control, allowing high school protesters – teachers present – to block traffic at Main and Imperial. Kids with signs are swarming the roadway, obstructing access to Main Street. This isn’t civics; it’s chaos – public safety matters. Avoid the area. Now. Enforce the law. Do your jobs, Officials. —- Julie S. (an embarrassed El Segundo parent)

14. ** I read the news today, oh boy – A Day In The Life with orchestra – The Beatles (arr. Sam Haug) – https://youtu.be/0edji28K8mk?si=K_bU9eqTj0NGElqR —- Jake T., Hermosa Beach

15. ** I suspect the recent embrace of so-called “gender-affirming care” for minors will be remembered as a deeply disturbing episode of mass delusion. Allowing children to undergo irreversible medical interventions was reckless. Even more damning is that powerful institutions promoted it aggressively and attacked anyone who raised legitimate concerns. A serious reckoning is overdue. —- Dr. Wendi G., El Segundo

16. ** Have you noticed homes sitting on the market longer lately, or is it just me? I’ve been to a lot of open houses, and buyers seem far more cautious. My husband’s a local agent, and helping him has given me a new perspective on the market. Curious what others are seeing – especially recent buyers or sellers. —- Ava C., Manhattan Beach

17. ** I don’t think Olympic athletes should express their political views… it takes the joy out of the Games, and I lose interest in watching. Further, the LA Times is now taking the position that the Dodgers and players shouldn’t go to the White House. I think it’s cool when a Championship Team visits the White House and our President … regardless of who is serving as President. It’s no wonder more and more subscribers are cancelling their LA Times subscriptions. —- Mark Burton, former Mayor of Manhattan Beach

26. ** When my Hispanic family immigrated to the South Bay 59 years ago, we did it the right way – legally, patiently, and in accordance with the law. Today, that distinction feels erased. 27. ** Frontier Internet just jacked my bill up $15 this month – and then has the nerve to charge $4.50 for a printed bill. A printed bill! As if I’d trust them to dip their hand into my bank account. Nickel-and-diming customers is not a business model. It’s a scam. —- Sarah DeAnna
