MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
TRUST IN LOCAL CAR DEALERSHIPS FLATLINES AT 1%

A new MB Weekly Reader Poll has delivered a jaw-dropping verdict on local car dealerships: just 1% of respondents say they have high trust in them. The poll, conducted among MB Weekly readers across the South Bay, suggests a credibility crisis for an industry long criticized for opaque pricing, aggressive sales tactics, and fine-print surprises. While most respondents stopped short of outright hostility, the overwhelming majority said they approach dealerships with skepticism, caution, or low expectations. Several readers cited confusing financing offers, last-minute add-ons, and a lack of transparency as key reasons for their distrust. Others pointed to the growing popularity of online car buying platforms as evidence that consumers are actively seeking alternatives to the traditional dealership model.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Lynn Harris

There are over 300 current construction sites in MB. There is a rule that construction can start at 7:30 a.m. on weekdays. Currently, three officers work starting at 7 a.m. to enforce this rule. Given the current controversy over salaries, etc., it might be an impossible request to have more officers out early in the mornings to enforce the 7:30 a.m. start time for construction. If you have ever lived near or next to a construction site in MB, you will understand that each moment before 7:30 a.m. is precious silence. I don’t want to hear “hey Joe, how was the bar last night?” Or Porto potty doors banging, or machines like generators, compressors, and nail guns before 7:30 a.m. I’m a resident here. I get it, all are entitled to build, but could the rules be enforced, please?

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Karen Flowers
(Owner of Salon Flourish)

Q: IF SALON FLOURISH WERE A PERSON AT A DINNER PARTY, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THEIR PERSONALITY – AND WHY WOULD EVERYONE WANT TO SIT NEXT TO THEM?
A: Salon Flourish would be the person who makes you feel comfortable being exactly who you are. She’s warm, present, and quietly confident. She doesn’t rush the conversation or try to impress anyone – she listens, remembers details, and asks questions that actually matter. People want to sit next to her because she creates a sense of calm. You feel seen, understood, and somehow more yourself just by being there.

Q: WHAT’S THE BIGGEST HAIR OR BEAUTY MYTH YOU WISH YOU COULD PERMANENTLY BAN FROM MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: That beauty has to be high-maintenance to be valuable. I’d love to let go of the belief that luxury means constant upkeep or perfection. To me, real beauty is ease – hair that grows out well, routines that support your life, and results that feel aligned instead of forced. When beauty simplifies your life rather than complicating it, that’s when it truly feels luxurious.

“Salon Flourish would be the person who makes you feel comfortable being exactly who you are.” —- Karen Flowers

Q: YOU’VE SEEN CLIENTS THROUGH BREAKUPS, WEDDINGS, CAREER PIVOTS, AND MAJOR LIFE CHANGES – WHAT’S THE MOST SURPRISING TRANSFORMATION YOU’VE EVER WITNESSED IN YOUR CHAIR?
A: The most surprising transformations are always internal. I’ve seen women come in feeling disconnected or unsure, and leave standing taller, speaking differently, making decisions they’d been sitting on for years. Hair can be the catalyst, but the real change is when someone realizes they’re allowed to evolve. Watching that moment of clarity happen – quietly, without fanfare – is incredibly powerful.

Q: IF YOU COULD STYLE THE HAIR OF ANY WOMAN IN HISTORY FOR ONE DAY, WHO WOULD IT BE – AND WHAT LOOK WOULD YOU GIVE HER?
A: Someone like Alanis Morissette. Her beauty was never about polish – it was about truth. I wouldn’t try to change or soften that. I’d keep her hair natural, expressive, and lived-in. Something that moves and feels real. Hair that supports her voice rather than competing with it. To me, that’s the most powerful kind of styling – when the hair honors the woman instead of performing for the world.

Q: WHAT DOES “FLOURISHING” REALLY MEAN TO YOU TODAY, BOTH AS A BUSINESS OWNER AND AS A WOMAN LIVING AND WORKING IN THE SOUTH BAY?
A: Flourishing means living in alignment. It’s building a business that supports my life instead of consuming it. It’s creating an environment where my team feels supported, my clients feel genuinely cared for, and growth feels sustainable – not exhausting. As a woman living and working in the South Bay, flourishing is about presence – being connected to my family, my community, and my intuition. It’s less about doing more, and more about doing what truly matters, with intention and heart.

Gum Tree Puts Down New Roots In Downtown Manhattan Beach:

Beloved home and gift shop Gum Tree has secured a new downtown Manhattan Beach location after losing its lease, the store’s owners announced. The boutique will relocate to 1140 Highland Avenue – about a block from its current spot – with an early April opening planned. In an Instagram post, owners Lori and Will Ford described the new space as “smaller and super charming,” comparable in size to their Hermosa Beach store. They promised a fresh take on their signature curated mix of stylish, high-quality goods. Founded in 2008, Gum Tree began as an Australian-inspired café and lifestyle boutique in Hermosa Beach before expanding to Manhattan Beach in 2016.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by (Name Withheld by Request)

As a former elected official here in Manhattan Beach, there is an odd and telling asymmetry in the way many of our local leaders – and their cheering sections – now regard one another in Manhattan Beach. Conservatives, by and large, see their liberal friends as naïve: well-intentioned, perhaps, but hopelessly credulous about human nature, incentives, and the stubborn realities of governance. Liberals, by contrast, increasingly see conservatives not as mistaken but as morally corrupt – selfish, cruel, even evil. This is not a trivial distinction; it is the difference between disagreement and demonization. One can argue with naïveté. One cannot reason with wickedness. Once your neighbor is no longer wrong but wicked, conversation gives way to rage, and persuasion yields to shaming. The town square becomes a tribunal. And so we witness the curious spectacle of a community that congratulates itself on tolerance while practicing a refined form of moral absolutism. It is not conservative skepticism that fuels the local temperature; it is progressive certitude. Nothing inflames quite like the conviction of one’s own virtue – and the delicious certainty that dissent must be punished.

TOO MUCH? INVESTORS OWN 17% OF CALIFORNIA HOMES:

** Ed Kaminsky (Realtor): Let’s look at the facts to answer the question of whether 17% of homes in California are owned by investors. Here are important numbers that are often not included before someone starts reacting that “investors own all of the homes, leaving it hard for Californians to buy homes.” So who are these investors? Reports state that they are mostly mom-and-pop investors, or generally people like you and me who either bought a rental property or bought one to rent to a family member. Only 3% of investor-owned homes are owned by a person or corporation that owns more than 10 homes. These are the so-called “large institutional investors.” To compare this to the rest of the nation, around 20% of homes nationwide are estimated to be investor-owned. States that have higher investor shares include Hawaii, with 26%–40% investor-owned homes; Alaska, with 27%–35%; and Montana and Maine, with 30%–31%. Bottom line: with California at 17% investor-owned homes, it is below the national average and in line with what would be considered normal.

** Jessiqa Pace (Realtor): Investors owning 1 in 5 properties in the state of California is a bit of a double edged sword. The positive is that these investors are creating long term housing for residents who cannot afford that down payment to purchase a home of their own. We need rental properties in the state of California now more than ever. The negative is that first time homebuyers are competing with investors in the real estate market. Investors are driving up home values making it harder for young families to purchase a home. That all said, I am seeing a trend where investors are moving their real estate assets out of California because of the strict housing provider laws and regulations. Many are exercising the 1031 exchange and taking their investment capital out of state.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Debbie Van Ness

Big thanks to Paul Wafer for his analysis and for continually bringing this to the attention of the entire community. By any stretch I am not anti-government or anti-government spending on things that benefit the community. However, I am anti-waste and certainly pro accountability for everything that gets spent. I have commented in the past on individual issues asking if anyone is scrutinizing line items on budgets for projects or expenditures that are put forth. I hear staff propose expenditures for things as a whole number and then they’re voted on, but nobody analyzes each line item to see where there could be savings or where there is waste or the like. I would also like to hear a response from the city council and all of the things that Paul states. Specifically on the swelling of city staff. Maybe MB Weekly would come up with a list of specific questions regarding this that many of us would like to hear the answers to. To date I have not seen any of the council members willing to go on record on any of this. If they have I have not seen or read it.

MB WEEKLY – RESTAURANT NEWS:

The former Lemonade space at Metlox Plaza in Manhattan Beach has been subdivided and will soon welcome two new dining concepts. One side will house the third location of Sogno Toscano, the Tuscan-inspired favorite known for specialty foods, espresso, and a popular wine bar. Bacio di Latte, an upscale gelato shop with a strong following, will take the other space. A quick word to the wise: if you’re searching the gelato brand on a work computer, be sure to type the full name – “Bacio Gelato” is apparently a strain of cannabis. No opening dates have been announced yet for either restaurant at Metlox Plaza.

MB WEEKLY – EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW:
COMMUNITY FINANCIAL WATCHDOG
PAUL WAFER

Q: WHAT FIRST RAISED YOUR SUSPICION THAT MANHATTAN BEACH CITY SALARIES DESERVED A CLOSER LOOK – AND WAS THERE A MOMENT WHEN YOU REALIZED THE NUMBERS WERE EVEN MORE ALARMING THAN EXPECTED?
A: I was reading an article that referenced a website that provided the listing of employee positions, salaries and benefit costs for every employee in every city in the state of California. It sparked my curiosity, so I went online and downloaded the city of Manhattan Beach’s salary data into an Excel spreadsheet to take a closer look at the data. With Excel I was able to total up the total salary categories which included regular, overtime, lump sum pay, and other pay. I also totaled up the benefit category costs including health dental vision and pension. By adding the wages and benefits it gave a complete picture of the actual compensation (cost) for each employee. Once I had a total, I sorted it from highest to lowest cost and my jaw dropped to the floor! There were 34 employees getting compensation over $300,000 with 9 of those over $400,000! I always thought that public servants had lower compensation because of the guaranteed benefits, boy was I wrong.

Q: WHICH SALARY OR COMPENSATION DISCOVERY MOST CLEARLY REVEALED A DISCONNECT BETWEEN PUBLIC SERVICE AND PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY, AND WHY DID IT STAND OUT TO YOU?
A: I took the time to compare our data with the data of other cities in our area and found that we had the highest or second highest cost per employee of every city I reviewed. I also looked at the ratio of employees per citizen, and again we topped the list, except for El Segundo, which has a much larger industrial base and much smaller population. I understand that we are fortunate to have a high property tax base and affluent population, but that does not mean that we should be spending more per capita than is necessary to provide city services. This is especially true when we are continually being asked to approve more taxes and assessments. When I compared our cost per capita to other cities with a similar population size and area size, the next closest city was 41% lower!

Q: WHAT KIND OF RESISTANCE OR PUSHBACK HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED SINCE SHINING A LIGHT ON CITY COMPENSATION, AND WHAT DOES THAT RESISTANCE TELL YOU ABOUT HOW POWER OPERATES LOCALLY?
A: The only council member that really pushed back on me was Steve Napolitano when the first article came out. To me, this was surprising since I believed he was more conservative than some of the other council members. I was wrong. Maybe now that he is a city manager in Hermosa Beach he will pay closer attention to the budget and he will think differently. For the most part, I have mostly been met with silence from the other council members. To me, their silence speaks volumes. I have received a lot of positive comments from the citizens of the city, but it appears the council is deaf in this regard.

“I was reading an article that referenced a website that provided the listing of employee positions, salaries and benefit costs for every employee in every city in the state of California. It sparked my curiosity…” —- Paul Wafer

Q: IN YOUR VIEW, WHAT SAFEGUARDS SHOULD EVERY CITY IMPLEMENT TO ENSURE TRANSPARENCY AND PREVENT SALARY INFLATION FROM QUIETLY BECOMING NORMALIZED?
A: In my career in healthcare, as a department director, administrator and consultant over many years, we used comparative productivity analytics to determine the efficiency of each department in the hospital. I would venture that healthcare is likely very close in complexity, if not more complex than city government. When I would consult at hospitals across the country, it did not matter if they were small rural hospitals or large university teaching hospitals. I could compare data for similar institutions across the country for every department. I believe that the city council and city manager should require each department director to research what other cities are using for true productivity standards, not just “goals” for the year. Those department standards should be adopted and published in a productivity report monthly to the council along with expenses. The city manager and finance director should meet with department directors monthly on those elements, require explanation of any variances and develop corrective action plans. As a hospital administrator I did this monthly with every department initially. Later, they only had to meet with me if their targets were not met.

Q: FOR RESIDENTS WHO FEEL OVERWHELMED OR POWERLESS WHEN CONFRONTING ENTRENCHED SYSTEMS, WHAT PRACTICAL STEPS CAN ORDINARY CITIZENS TAKE TO FOLLOW YOUR EXAMPLE AND DEMAND FISCAL ACCOUNTABILITY?
A: For one thing, we need to stop re-electing the same city council candidates year after year. I agree with Mark Burton and others that there should be a 2 term limit permanently for all council members, otherwise we will have an entrenched ruling class that continues to spend and spend. I am hoping that this coming election cycle will provide us with some new candidates that will be fiscally conservative and take a deeper dive into what I have been writing about. I started writing about these issues right before the last election in 2024. I am hoping when there are candidate forums, questions get asked about these issues. In 2024, I did submit questions for one of the debates, but those questions were not included. Now that more people are aware, perhaps we can demand some answers.

Q: WHAT GRADE WOULD YOU GIVE THE CITY OF MANHATTAN BEACH FOR FRAGILITY WITH TAXPAYERS’ MONEY?
A: I would give them an “F” for effort. They have failed to control the number of employees, adding 66 new positions in the last 10 years, failed to control expenses, increasing from $94.1 million to $184.5 million in the last 10 years. That is a 100% increase! At the same time, our population has actually decreased. I just think better stewardship of our tax dollars is needed. No one is minding the store!

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
South Bay Sex Shift – Women Ditch The Blush

Move over, fellas – South Bay women are officially rewriting the rules of online taboo. Pornhub’s newly released 2025 Year in Review shows women are tuning into X-rated content at record levels, shattering the long-held myth that porn is a “men-only” pastime. According to the data, women now account for 38 percent of all visitors to the adult platform – a stunning 14 percent jump since 2015. Closer to home, an anonymous MB Weekly reader survey suggests South Bay women are far less shy than stereotypes suggest. Many respondents said curiosity, independence, and changing social norms have made adult content less taboo and more mainstream.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Mark Burton (Former MB Mayor)

The Merry Go Round Of “Termed Out” Former Mayors: Historically, our City Councils had been fiscally responsible and listened to our residents. Not so anymore. What happened? Simply put, entrenched career politicians who served more than two terms. The solution is real term limits, two terms only. In our Council elections of 2017, 2021 and 2025, we effectively had a “Merry Go Round of ‘Termed Out’ former Mayors” endorsing and supporting each other for a third, fourth, fifth and even sixth term. In some respects, these “termed out” former Mayors acted as a cabal to keep themselves in power, essentially creating a “ruling class” of entrenched power with no accountability to our residents. Mind you, they are nice people who care about our community. However, that’s not the point. Unfortunately, our City currently doesn’t have real term limits, two terms only. We have “faux” term limits where you complete two terms, sit out for two years, and run for a third and fourth term. Sit out again another two years and you can run for your fifth and sixth term. Yes, sham term limits. The hallmark of these “termed out” former Mayors serving from 2017 to 2025 was gross fiscal mismanagement. Over the last year, Paul Wafer has provided our community with some disturbing and shocking fiscal facts:

  • Total full-time employees increased from 294 in 2017 to 354 in 2025 with our population declining by 2400.
  • Total annual compensation increased to over $400,000 for 14 employees with a total cost over $4 Million.
  • Total annual annal compensation increased to over $300,000 for 34 employees with a total cost over $11 Million.
  • Total annual compensation increased to over $200,000 for 55 employees with a total cost of over $14 Million.
  • Total wages increased from $36 Million to over $50 million, an increase of over 36%.
  • Total retirement and health contribution increased from $8 Million to over $12.5 Million, an increase of 51%.
  • Our total cost per capita has increased in the last 5 years by 61%.  For smaller cities like ours, our total cost per capita is the highest in the State at $5,857.72 with other cities being $4151.67, $2,523.48 and $1,952.49.
  • Total Management Level Employees increased from 47 to over 75 for an increased cost of $6.5 Million.

Clearly, these “termed out” former Mayors serving for years and years, well beyond two terms, naturally led to complacency, resulting in a lack of fiscal responsibility. But that’s not the worst consequence. The worst consequence is they stopped listening to our residents. To get reelected, they didn’t have to. With the support of the Merry Go Round of “termed out” former Mayors, they were the “ruling class” with the power of being perpetual incumbents. This November, VOTE for candidates who support real term limits, Two Terms Only. Out same old, same old culture and in with the new. For the sake of the future of our City, we need Councilmembers who will act fiscally responsible and listen to our residents. More importantly, Councilmembers who will fight for our residents.

Tuscan Vibes Hit The Beach – Sogno Toscano Sets Sights On Metlox:

Sogno Toscano is preparing to open a Tuscan-inspired lifestyle café at Metlox. Cesare Santoni, the company’s director of hospitality, told Patch the café is slated to open this summer. He said the coastal charm of Manhattan Beach mirrors the Tuscan seaside where the founders grew up. Designed as a relaxed spot for lunch, aperitivo, or dinner, the new café will mark the brand’s sixth location. Sogno Toscano was founded by lifelong friends Pietro Brembilla and Brian Persico, natives of Bolgheri, Italy.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Russ Lesser (Former MB Mayor)

Men cannot get pregnant. Period. I believe transgender people should be protected from discrimination in the workplace and other areas, but policies today are getting ridiculous. The original intent of Title IX was to ensure that all students, male and female, have equal access to education and athletic opportunities. Some states are allowing biological men to compete against biological women in sports, which makes no sense and could destroy women’s sports. Biological girls have been deprived of scholarships because they lost to a transgender girl (biological man) in a track meet. The vast majority of people oppose biological men competing against biological women. Martina Navratilova, who is gay, said, “transgender inclusion in sports is insane, and it’s cheating.” Caitlyn Jenner, a transgender woman (who used to be Bruce Jenner, Olympic decathlon champion), agrees, saying, “if you’re a biological boy you shouldn’t be in girls’ sports.” So again, biological men can’t get pregnant, shouldn’t compete in women’s sports, and shouldn’t be allowed in girls’ locker rooms.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Abby T. (Manhattan Beach)

As a resident of Manhattan Beach – and someone who is decidedly not tech-savvy – I feel compelled to share how consistently impressive the Apple Store Manhattan Village has been. I’ve visited the store three times in the past year, and every single visit has been a genuinely positive experience. What stands out most is the staff. They are unfailingly patient, deeply knowledgeable, and refreshingly kind. Never once did I feel rushed, talked down to, or made to feel foolish for asking basic questions. Instead, I was met with calm explanations, clear guidance, and a sincere desire to help me actually understand what I was doing. In today’s world – where real customer service often feels extinct – this Apple Store is a rare and welcome exception. I’ve left each visit not only with my problem solved, but with absolute confidence and appreciation for a team that clearly takes pride in helping people. It sets a standard others should aspire to.

Drunk Driving Roundup – MB Cops Nab 5 DUI Suspects In Weekend Crackdown:

Manhattan Beach police conducted a no-nonsense DUI sweep over the weekend, arresting five suspected drunk drivers, some with repeat offenses and reckless behavior, according to the Manhattan Beach Police Department. Among those busted were two first-time DUI offenders and one driver with a recent prior DUI arrest. Another suspect, already on DUI probation from a previous conviction, tried to pull a fast one on officers by jumping out of the driver’s seat and into the backseat during a traffic stop in an apparent attempt to dodge suspicion. The most alarming arrest involved a serial offender with six prior DUI arrests. This marked his third DUI arrest in just five months. His license had already been suspended due to earlier arrests. Officers booked him for DUI and driving on a suspended license, and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

STANDING ROOM, STANDING OVATION:
MB WEEKLY LAUNCHES THE YEAR BY CELEBRATING THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE MANHATTAN BEACH MATTER

An inspiring – and unmistakably electric – start to the new year unfolded January 7 at Fete, the acclaimed restaurant from celebrated chef David Slay. The jam-packed, standing-room-only cocktail party brought together a cross-section of Manhattan Beach’s most engaged civic leaders, business owners, philanthropists, and longtime community advocates. At the heart of the evening was the presentation of MB Weekly’s first-ever Person of the Year award to Michael Greenberg, recognizing his outsized impact on the city throughout 2025. The celebration also honored an exceptional MB Weekly Honor Roll, spotlighting Rita Crabtree, Charlotte Lesser, and Paul Wafer for their enduring service, leadership, and commitment to the community. The room buzzed with conversation and purpose as guests reflected on the importance of civic engagement at a time when local leadership matters more than ever. Applause erupted repeatedly throughout the night, underscoring a shared appreciation for those who quietly – and sometimes not so quietly – make Manhattan Beach a stronger place to live. “I honestly thought this was one of the most impressive events in Manhattan Beach in a very long time,” said prominent real estate entrepreneur Larry Kosmont. MB Weekly’s Person of the Year distinction is awarded annually to the individual who made the most meaningful impact on Manhattan Beach. On this night, the message resonated clearly: leadership still matters, generosity still counts, and when a community comes together to honor its best, the result is nothing short of powerful.

Michael Greenberg Speech…

… Thanks for hosting [David Slay of Slay Restaurants] and to MB Weekly. Michael, thank you for this great honor. It’s humbling. It’s actually uncomfortable, but I feel that by recognizing the work that these good people do, it implores us to do more good work. I think if we just spread the … at the end of the day, there’s a lot of challenges happening in the world, right? So much, it’s painful sometimes to turn the TV on and see what’s going on. So I think that this is spreading the word that we need to do more if we can. We live in this little enchanted village called Manhattan Beach. We’re very, very fortunate to call this place home. Everybody here is super generous. City Council … Robin and I and my family at Skechers work super hard to contribute, whether it’s local, national, or international, wherever we can help. I get this wonderful podium because of Skechers, so I want to, you know, use it to do well.

The Roundhouse
Some of our accomplishments that I’m super proud of … one of them being the Roundhouse and Reimagining [it] … I don’t know if everyone’s aware that we get 300,000 visitors a year, but more important than that, we get the kids from the inner city that come that really don’t ever get to see the Pacific Ocean.

The Friendship Walk
We also started years ago the Friendship Walk, which the first year I was so nervous I didn’t know if anybody would show up. I thought maybe I’d be the only one walking, and there were 1,200 other people that came out and supported us, and we raised … I think it was $220,000 year one, and I’m not sure which year it is, 16 or 17, and we’ve raised $33 million.

The Friendship Campus
We are building the Friendship Campus, which is 66,000 square feet in Redondo Beach for children with special needs, and it’s a life skills building. It’s life-changing. It’s going to transform so many beautiful souls, give them so much to do after they leave high school that they wouldn’t get to do in most communities, so it’s going to be, I believe it’s opening … just around the corner. I hope that everybody will come out and support and see the magic that has been created … It’s a transformation for so many kids.

In Conclusion
So, with all that said, thank you for this honor … I appreciate it, and I’m going to plug MB Weekly. If you want to find a good restaurant like Mr. Slay’s restaurants go to MB Weekly and check it out. Thank you, and God Bless.

MB WEEKLY – READER POLL:
Fate, Fur & Soulmates! MB Dog Owners Say Their Pups Are Their “Emotional Twins”

In a revealing new MB Weekly Reader Poll, South Bay dog owners insist their four-legged companions aren’t just pets – they’re destiny. A stunning 81% of respondents said it felt like fate that they ended up with their dog, describing the bond as instantaneous, uncanny, and, in many cases, life-changing. The survey also found that three in four owners believe their dog’s personality mirrors their own – from energy levels to social habits to emotional sensitivity. Introverts overwhelmingly reported having calm, cautious, even shy pups, while extroverts said their dogs are outgoing, friendly, high-spirited socialites who never met a stranger they didn’t like. Many owners went even further, calling their dogs “emotional twins” or outright soulmates. Whether people pick dogs like themselves – or grow more alike over time – remains the great unanswered mystery of the canine-human love story.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Jeff Byron
(The Kettle, General Manager)

Q: AFTER DECADES WATCHING PEOPLE WALK THROUGH THOSE DOORS, WHAT ABOUT HUMAN NATURE HASN’T CHANGED – AND WHAT HAS?
A: One thing I can tell you for certain is that people largely remain good. Social media and local news seem bent on telling us otherwise but when you face countless numbers of people year in and year out you plainly see that kindness, compassion and fellowship are alive and well out there. I meet the nicest people every single day! One thing I’ve noticed that has changed, since that whole global pandemic thing a few years back, is that some people seem to have withdrawn from one another. I believe this dynamic has led to a lot of people out there missing out on all that nice stuff I mentioned in the first half of this question.

Q: RESTAURANTS COME AND GO IN MANHATTAN BEACH. WHY DID THE KETTLE BECOME AN INSTITUTION?
A: I’m afraid you’d have to tell me the answer to that one, our job is to simply give people more than they expect and to do so cheerfully.

Q: ONE LESSON FROM THE FLOOR – NOT A BUSINESS BOOK – WHAT IS IT?
A: When my kids were small we loved the movie Finding Nemo. “Just keep swimming” was Dori’s line I’ve used that mantra many many times when there’s more things that need to be done than there are people to do them. Gets me through every time. Yeah, so Just keep swimming is my answer.

Q: WILL THE KETTLE CONTINUE TO RAISE THEIR PRICES IN THE NEW YEAR?
A: This answer is from ownership…Thanks Mike! “You know, as my grandpa Arthur J used to say, nothing in the restaurant business ever gets cheaper. We’re seeing all kinds of costs – from minimum wage to even garbage removal – go up, and that might mean prices have to adjust a bit… again. But we’re committed to staying the neighborhood’s kitchen and keeping things as reasonable as we can. We can’t predict the future, but we’ll always aim to stay competitive and a good value for everyone in the community.” – Mike Simms.

Q: WHAT ARE THREE OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN MANHATTAN BEACH?
A: Kettle first of course, this house has kept me well fed for 34 years! After that I’d say The Arthur J – best steak in town! Sloopy’s is still a fave of my daughter and I … Does that count as three?

Chevron Sirens To Blare – But Don’t Panic!:

Residents near the Chevron Refinery may hear loud alarms in the coming months – but officials say it’s only a test. Chevron announced it will begin a series of Emergency Notification and Response System drills, starting January 14, between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The tests will feature an audible “fire alarm” message from a processing unit located in the middle of the refinery. The company says the drills are designed to check sound levels, system performance, and overall readiness. Chevron stressed the alarms are not tied to any emergency and are not expected to pose a concern for nearby neighborhoods. The company says the advance notice is part of its commitment to transparency. Questions? Chevron’s hotline is (310) 615-5342.

Prominent South Bay Realtor Predicts A Steady Year Ahead For Manhattan Beach:

Ed Kaminsky

Manhattan Beach’s tightly constrained housing market is feeling the ripple effects of recent regional upheaval, according to prominent South Bay Realtor Ed Kaminsky. He notes that the devastating Palisades fires displaced numerous families, many of whom relocated to Manhattan Beach, leasing – and in some cases purchasing – homes, quickly absorbing scarce inventory. As insurance claims and lengthy rebuild timelines stretch on, Kaminsky expects some renters to extend leases or transition into buyers. With limited supply and financially strong buyers securing competitive mortgage rates near 5%, upward pressure on home values may persist. Overall, Kaminsky anticipates a stable, fundamentally supported market rather than a sharp correction.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Mark Burton (Former MB Mayor)

By a 3-2 vote, the City Council recently awarded a contract in the amount of $27.8 million to the lowest irresponsible bidder. Yes, the Council did so even though they were fully aware that that Department of Industrial Relations had administratively prosecuted this contractor for deliberately and willfully failing to pay prevailing wages and misclassifying workers on a public works project for this Metropolitan Water District resulting in a fine being imposed in 2024 in the amount of $653,177. Just incredible! Worse yet, in the contractor’s bid questionnaire, this contractor attempted to mislead our City by failing to disclose this settlement from just 2 years ago. Wait, that’s not all. This same contractor failed to disclose that another public works contract was recently cancelled by a city. Finally, there is a big RED FLAG when you visit this contractor’s website, it has no information. Nada! Nothing! No “Who We Are”. No “Management Team”. And, importantly, No “Lists of Projects”. Amazingly, for a supposed “reputable” contractor, it only lists on contact email. As we know, our City Council for some time has not been a paragon for making fiscally responsible decisions. So, it’s no wonder they would choose to ignore such irresponsible behavior by a bidder and award a $27.8 contract.

DUI Suspect Pleads Not Guilty In Death Of Loyola Tennis Star:

A woman accused of drunkenly plowing into and killing an 18-year-old Loyola High School tennis standout in Manhattan Beach pleaded not guilty in Torrance Superior Court. Jenia Resha Belt, 33, faces murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and driving on a suspended license in the death of Braun Levi. Prosecutors say the crash happened around 12:45 a.m. May 4 in the 100 block of South Sepulveda Boulevard. Belt was arrested shortly after and is being held on $2 million bail. Levi, walking with a friend, was struck and later died at a hospital. A nationally ranked tennis player, he was weeks from graduation and bound for the University of Virginia, his family said. Levi’s mother, Jennifer, has since joined Nathan Hochman and other officials in calling for stricter DUI laws, vowing to push legislation to strengthen sentencing and punishment statewide.

Vacation Over, Crime Wave Greets New Year – Burglars Smash Their Way Into Manhattan Beach:

Manhattan Beach residents returned from the holidays to an unwelcome surprise: burglaries and thefts, according to the latest police crime summary. Between December 31, 2025, and January 7, 2026, officers logged a hefty 906 calls for service, made 17 arrests, and took 45 reports. Most troubling was a rise in residential burglaries, with two incidents reported in Patrol Areas 1 and 2. In both cases, suspects shattered rear glass doors – an increasingly common tactic. On January 2, one homeowner came back from a family vacation to find their back door smashed, though no losses were immediately reported. A second break-in occurred later that night on the 1500 block of 6th Street, again involving a shattered rear door and an uncertain loss total. Not all attempts succeeded. That same evening, a home’s surveillance system – lights blazing and alarms sounding – sent three masked suspects in hoodies fleeing in an SUV. Police say the message is clear: security systems can still deter criminals, but vigilance is more important than ever.

The Solar Gamble That Paid Off – The Rise Of Richard Tall Bear Westerman:

In 2011, Richard Tall Bear Westerman (Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate) walked away from an 18-year career in interior fabrication and plunged headlong into the solar industry – spending two years in his Manhattan Beach garage without a paycheck. Yet grit, vision, and tribal partnerships fueled his pursuit. What began as small solar projects tied to his work in tribal casinos soon expanded as Westerman cultivated opportunities with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians. His breakthrough arrived in 2013: a landmark PPA with San Diego Gas & Electric. That deal unlocked financing for a $52 million, 200-acre, 20-megawatt solar farm in Ocotillo Wells – completed by 2015 and forever marking Tallbear Seville’s place in the renewable-energy landscape.
