SHOCK POLL – HIGH TIMES AT HOME: SURPRISING POLL REVEALS MARIJUANA USE AMONG PARENTS AND ADULT CHILDREN

A recent MB Weekly Reader poll reveals a stunning trend: 47% of parents who use marijuana at least once or twice a year have consumed it in front of their children, shared it with them, or both. This statistic predominantly refers to interactions with adult children (over 18) rather than minors. The poll highlights changing attitudes towards marijuana as it becomes increasingly legalized and socially accepted. Experts suggest these behaviors may be part of a broader trend where parents and adult children engage in more open and shared experiences. While some argue this normalization can reduce stigma and promote responsible use, others raise concerns about potential impacts on family dynamics and individual health.

EXCLUSIVE:
Manhattan Beach Police Chief Rachel Johnson Responds To “M.B. Goons” Question

The Manhattan Beach Police Department continues to enforce laws and protect the public. Regarding your “M.B. Goons” question, our School Resource Officers and Juvenile Detective have made great strides this past year to identify several juveniles related to the “Goons.” Our officers have spoken to parents, taken reports, issued citations, and made arrests to combat criminal activity. These are some of our officers’ proactive steps, but we will always continue to provide excellent service to the community. Residents’ questions or concerns should be directed to the police department. Airing grievances on social media or speaking to the media may feel like a constructive outlet, but if we do not hear directly from a complainant, the message is lost.

Mayor Joe Franklin – PART TWO
https://youtu.be/tO39gzde8nE

Vince Altamura
(Altamura Real Estate Group)

Q: WHAT IS YOUR BEST HABIT, AND WHAT IS YOUR WORST ONE?
A: I think my best habit is cleanliness. My bed must be made prior to me leaving the house for work. After I cook any meal at my house, I must immediately clean the dishes, pots, and pans afterwards. My worst habit might be procrastination. I eventually get all the tasks done, but sometimes I can get them done a hell of a lot sooner.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST INDULGENCE?
A: I love the Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups with Dark Chocolate. You can see them at the end of the checkout aisles at your local grocery stores.

Q: WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE CREATIVELY STUCK?
A: I get up to walk around for 5-10 minutes. Take a water or bathroom break and then try to regroup.

Q: HOW DO YOU EXERCISE?
A: I exercise at the F45 training facilities. They have specific cardio workouts that use plyometric movements, timing, and tempo to blast both the aerobic and anaerobic systems. They also have strength classes to improve muscle building and fat burning.

Q: HOW DO YOU UNPLUG?
A: I enjoy riding my bicycle on the Manhattan Beach Strand and the Santa Monica Strand. I will put on a playlist and ride along the coast starting at the beach and ocean. It really helps put my mind to ease.

Q: IS THERE A BOOK YOU’D RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE?
A: I strongly recommend reading “The Psychology of Money: Timeless lessons on Wealth, Greed, and Happiness” by Morgan Housel.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
A: I would tell my younger self that if you want change in your life, you need to physically act on it. Life does not wait around for anyone, and if you are looking for opportunities in business, friends, travel, and dating, etc, then you need to go out and get it.

Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PODCAST?
A: I enjoy listening to “The Compound and Friends”, which is a group of advisors showcasing their insight and hot takes on business and investing.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR MANTRA?
A: 1) Life goes on. You must move forward. 2) My knowledge is my only source of income.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Terry Watson (Manhattan Beach)

I am currently visiting Munich, and today, I watched about 6-8 police officers at a popular pedestrian zone stopping bike and scooter riders. They stopped them for all sorts of violations and had credit card readers. It took only a minute or two to stop a rider, get their credit card, and fine them $20. I don’t know if the people were issued tickets, but there were many credit card transactions. It was non-stop action. I could easily see something like this being done at the piers in Manhattan or Hermosa for all kinds of violations. $20 is a nominal fine of $ and would let the violators know they are being watched. Yeah, more significant crimes are occurring, but if people know they are getting caught for small stuff, they may think twice about committing big stuff.

BODY FOUND NEAR MANHATTAN BEACH PARK POND:

The corpse of a 23-year-old foreign national was recovered at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach Monday morning. “Manhattan Beach Police Department (MBPD) Officers and Manhattan Beach Fire Department Paramedics (MBFD) were dispatched to Polliwog Park at 1601 Manhattan Beach Boulevard for a medical aid call regarding an unresponsive adult male on the ground near the pond. MBFD pronounced the subject deceased at the scene,” according to a City update. “MBPD Detectives and the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office were called to the scene to investigate the death. Currently, the cause of death is ‘deferred’ pending additional investigation by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, meaning additional testing and investigation are required to determine the cause of death. However, there were no obvious signs of foul play.” The City is referring anyone with information on the incident to contact Detective Daniel Delgado at (310) 802-5125, or Detective Sergeant Taylor Klosowski at (310) 802-5123

Biden Faces Growing Calls To Withdraw Post-Debate: MB Weekly Poll Shows 71% Support Immediate Exit; Elder Abuse Claim

In a recent MB Weekly Reader poll, 71% of respondents believe President Joe Biden should withdraw immediately from the 2024 presidential race following his latest debate performance. The survey reflects growing concerns among voters about Biden’s ability to lead. “Based on what I saw, I wouldn’t let him walk to the bathroom alone,” commented Mort V., a longtime Manhattan Beach business owner, echoing a sentiment shared by many. “Honest to God, I believe his wife, Jill Biden, should be charged with elder abuse!” said Hillary K., a longtime Democrat in the South Bay. The debate, marked by gaffes and faltering responses, has intensified scrutiny on Biden’s capacity to manage the demands of a second term. As the election season heats up, this sentiment could significantly impact the Democratic primary dynamics, pushing for a reconsideration of the party’s candidate.

MB WEEKLY:
The Faces of Manhattan Beach
Aaron Garisek
General Manager At Arthur J

Q: I UNDERSTAND THAT THE ARTHUR J RESTAURANT HAS OPENED UP AN EXCITING NEW PRIVATE ROOM BESIDE THE RESTAURANT. CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW THE IDEA WAS CREATED AND WHAT THE PRIVATE ROOM’S MISSION IS?
A: The Dry Cleaner next door to The Arthur J had served the community for many years and when they decided to move their location we saw it as the perfect opportunity to expand the footprint of the restaurant to further serve the community. With high demand from our guests for larger gatherings and celebrations we wanted to provide a venue that could host a multitude of events, while making sure it had continuity with the mid-century modern feel of the restaurant. The Bungalow provides a warm and intimate setting for groups between 10 and 36. We can also partition the space to effortlessly host two parties simultaneously. The Club House and Pool House are the two sides of The Bungalow, each providing a unique motif of artwork and décor while still encapsulating the vibe our Guests have come to expect from The Arthur J.

Q: HOW HAS THE PRIVATE ROOM BENEFITED THE ALREADY SPECTACULARLY SUCCESSFUL RESTAURANT?
A: We are fortunate to have such a loyal community that has grown to love The Arthur J experience over the years. It’s humbling to know that each and every day we are in the unique position to host and facilitate monumental life experiences and we don’t take that for granted. This Private Dining Room only allows us to increase our impact in contributing to our community, while staying focused on the elegance and excellence of the service, hospitality and cuisine we provide.

Q: HOW CAN PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY LEARN MORE ABOUT PRIVATE ROOMS?
A: Please visit our website www.thearthurj.com where you can review our offering in both the restaurant and The Bungalow. You can also initiate an event inquiry through our website and our Director of Celebrations, Katie Sunseri, will follow up once submitted with availability, offerings and pricing. You are also more than welcome to contact Katie directly at katies@thearthurj.com to schedule a walkthrough. We are excited to show off the space so whether you have a business meeting or family gathering, we are confident that we can provide you with an option that will fit your needs.

Q: YOU ARE THE NEW GENERAL MANAGER AT THE RESTAURANT. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED THUS FAR?
A: The lessons learned are countless. My reasoning for coming from Tin Roof Bistro to The Arthur J was to learn and grow. I am delighted to say that the warm welcome from an incredible team, the way that the downtown MB community has embraced me and the beautiful concept that I love more each and every day have all validated my decision to take on this new role. I’m in a unique position to lead an already exceptional team to new heights while protecting the foundation of excellence that they’ve built. It’s a great challenge and I am so happy that Chef David, Mike Simms and Nick DiLullo have entrusted me with this responsibility.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF RUNNING A FINE DINING RESTAURANT IN MANHATTAN BEACH POST-COVID?
A: To be honest we are so past Covid that I don’t even really think about things in those terms. I will say that the challenge of running a high end Steak House in the DTMB community is all about consistency and excellence. We are committed to our team, our product and our community. We spend a lot of time keeping our menu fresh with seasonal offerings and highly sought after wines.

Final MBUSD Budget Cancels 20 Teacher Layoffs:

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Education approved its 2023-2025 budget amid state financial uncertainty. “There is no doubt this year brought challenges, such as the recent shortfall in the state budget that caused us to make the difficult decision to lay off staff,” Dr. John Bowes, MBUSD Superintendent, stated in June’s Superintendent’s Newsletter. “But thanks to everyone who rallied behind our schools and showed support by voting on the Measure MB Parcel tax, we were able to announce victory and reinstate positions. The Parcel tax will bring in funding of approximately $2.4 million yearly for each of the next six years that the State cannot take away. Also, thanks to MBEF’s ongoing efforts to meet the District’s needs annually, they allocated an initial grant of $1,325,000 in May, with a final grant allocation of $7.4 million for the upcoming 2024-25 school year. This will help rescind layoff notices, bring back staff, and support programs.”

Lot 3 Near Metlox Has “Significant Structural Issues”:

Manhattan Beach officials partially closed a public parking lot near Merlot June 24 due to “significant structural issues.” “Lot 3 is anticipated to undergo a full redesign and new construction, and the City’s engineers have been regularly monitoring the condition of the structure,” according to the City. “Recently, during a routine inspection, significant structural issues were identified relating to the third level that require a more specialized review.”

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Lee Phillips, MPH

Understanding the Grants Pass Decision: In a landmark decision, the U.S. The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of Grants Pass, affirming cities’ rights to regulate encampments and public spaces without violating the 8th Amendment’s prohibition against “cruel and unusual punishment.” Gavin Newsom stated “Today’s ruling provides officials the definitive authority to implement and enforce policies to clear encampments, removing the legal ambiguities that have tied the hands of officials and limited their ability to deliver common-sense measures to protect the safety and well-being of communities.” The presence of encampments has not gone unnoticed. From tents along Sepulveda to individuals living on benches, in vehicles or on public beaches/parks, some lingering for years. Manhattan Beach already has a comprehensive approach to those who are homeless, with dedicated outreach worker, trained police officers, and access to shelter beds and MBSAFE, a nonprofit that assists people who are homeless. Looking forward, the City Council should task the City Attorney with assessing how the Grants Pass ruling impacts local regulations is a prudent step. Understanding what constitutes camping under local ordinances and how these laws will be enforced is crucial. Will enforcement be complaint-driven or proactive? Will it operate around the clock? Clarifying definitions, enforcement strategies, and ensuring safe public spaces will be paramount.

Brewco Social Reopens Nearly A Year After Owners Announced It Might Close:

Brewco returns to Manhattan Beach. The more than 30-year-old restaurant and pub reopened in May as brewco social following a refurbishment nearly a year after its owners announced its closure. Brewco, 124 Manhattan Beach Blvd., was the city’s first brewpub, opening in 1991 as Manhattan Beach Brewing Company, changed to Brewco in 2009, and now to brewco social. OpenTable featured brewco social as one of “LA’s nine hottest openings of the year. … Chef Neal Fraser of award-winning Redbird recently joined the team … There’s a completely revamped interior done up in neutral tones, thanks to designer Noelle Isbel. Snag a seat at one of the rounded booths to share globally inspired snacks like Brazilian pão de queijo and chicken wings with Louisiana hot sauce before moving on to mains like Korean-style pork ribs.” Michael Zislis and his partners opened Brewco, Rock’N Fish, The Strand House, Shade Hotels in Redondo and Manhattan Beach, and The Brews Hall in Torrance and Hermosa Beach.

MB WEEKLY – COMMENTARY:
by Jane B. (Manhattan Beach)

Honest to God, I don’t know what it’s going to take other than the death of a reckless E-bike rider to get the city of Manhattan Beach to act clearly and forcefully. The time for double talk and B.S. is long past. Day after day, week after week, I see the same thing that anybody else going downtown in Manhattan Beach sees, reckless teenage E-bike riders breaking the law in countless reckless ways without any police presence downtown. The city has allowed a free-for-all, and it’s only a matter of time before somebody gets seriously injured or even killed. Wake up, city leaders. [Your passive inaction] is both outrageous and embarrassing!
