WILD WEST – ANOTHER ARMED ROBBERY AND SHOOTING IN MANHATTAN BEACH IN BROAD DAYLIGHT:

While the investigation is still ongoing to apprehend others involved in the crime, the Manhattan Beach Police Department requests the public’s assistance (contact Detective Hartnell at (310) 802-5127 or the MBPD Tip Line (310) 802-5171 if you wish to remain anonymous) in identifying subjects shown in this image from Prestige Jewelers’ camera system.


Manhattan Beach suffered another armed robbery and shooting in broad daylight on Saturday, August 7th, at the popular Prestige Jewelers on Sepulveda Blvd. in Manhattan Beach. According to the City’s announcement, The Manhattan Beach Police Department, and the Gardena and El Segundo, Police Departments responded to a smash-and-grab robbery at Prestige Jewelers at approximately 12:40 p.m. Saturday.

Five suspects, who were described as wearing hooded sweatshirts, used hammers to smash the jewelry showcases, and an employee of the store responded by using a firearm to shoot at the suspects. The suspects fled the store to awaiting vehicles, last seen fleeing southbound on Sepulveda Blvd. No employees were injured. However, some jewelry was taken.

“In partnership with the Manhattan Beach Police Department, the Gardena Police Department arrested a suspect involved in Saturday’s robbery at Prestige Jewelers. After an intensive investigation, law enforcement officials have successfully apprehended one of the suspects involved in the crime,” according to a September 9 MBPD press release.

“This swift arrest should reassure the community that we have the most dedicated law enforcement agency and partners ensuring the safety of our community,” said Mayor Richard Montgomery. “We must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Together, we will continue working to keep Manhattan Beach a safe and thriving place for everyone.”

“In a time when the community is grieving the loss of one of our heroes, our number one priority remains steadfast in keeping the entire City of Manhattan Beach safe,” Montgomery said. “We are grateful for the assistance from the Gardena and El Segundo Police Departments, who have stepped up to assist our Police Department in apprehending the offenders involved in this crime.”

Two north Manhattan Beach neighborhoods will soon have underground power, cable, internet, and phone connections. The City Council on October 3 unanimously awarded Asplundh Construction, LLC more than $100k for Work Within the Right-of-Way in Underground Utility Assessment District 19-12 (District 12) and Private Utility Conversion Work in Underground Utility Assessment District 19-14 (District 14). “The City of Manhattan Beach’s Underground Utility Assessment District (UUAD) Program provides a pathway for property owners to initiate projects to remove overhead utilities throughout their neighborhood. While these projects are funded by property owners, the City’s Public Works Department provides the resources to guide interested parties through the utility undergrounding process,” according to the city’s Fact Booklet updated August 2023.

And while climate change is an important factor affecting wildfires over many parts of the world, it isn’t close to the only factor that deserves our sole focus.

Q: HOW DID YOU FIRST GET ASSOCIATED WITH THE WEST BASIN WATER DISTRICT?
A: I first learned about West Basin Municipal Water District on a community tour of the agency’s Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility in El Segundo. After the tour, I was hooked! I was fascinated by the wastewater recycling process happening right here in our backyard. It also was eye-opening to understand West Basin’s essential work to ensure our communities have the water they need.

Q: WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU DO ON BEHALF OF MANHATTAN BEACH AND THE SOUTH BAY COMMUNITIES?
A: I serve as an elected member of the Board of Directors of West Basin, a position I have held since 2014. Much like city council, my role as a Director is governance of our local water district that entails setting policy and our strategic vision, as well as approving our annual budget. As a board member, I am focused on West Basin’s local infrastructure and operations while also participating in water policy discussions at the state and federal levels. Decisions made in Sacramento and D.C. can have major impacts on our local water supplies and operations, so that is a critical part of our work on behalf of the 17 cities and nearly 1 million residents we serve.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR JOB?
A: Major challenges include keeping up with the many moving parts in water. Hardly a day goes by when we’re not reading yet another story about extreme weather, droughts, floods or wildfires, whether at home or abroad. I’m also busy monitoring proposed legislation and making sure West Basin’s interests are part of the conversations at the state and federal levels. Lastly, a consistent challenge is keeping the public engaged about our water supply conditions and conservation. This is easier when we’re in a drought and it’s the front-page story every day. But when we have a wet winter, water issues are no longer a top priority for many. So it’s our job to continue educating and informing the public about West Basin’s work to secure our local water supplies, as well as the many programs we have such as grass replacement rebates that help us make permanent, long-term changes to our South Bay water demands.

Q: WHAT’S THE NUMBER ONE MISCONCEPTION ABOUT WATER IN THE SOUTH BAY?
A: Just because we had a wet winter does not mean our water troubles are over. If anything, we got a respite but we must remain focused on the long-term challenges for our water supplies across the West. Fortunately, our South Bay communities are highly engaged and have responded well to our calls to conserve water and use it more efficiently. And while many residents and businesses have taken advantage of our water savings programs, like replacing their lawns with drought tolerant native landscapes or installing rain barrels, we have many more who can participate and do their part.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
A: The Goonies! It’s one of the best movies ever. We must have worn out a few VHS tapes from watching it so often!

** Longtime Southern California labor leader Ricardo “Rick” Icaza, who gained a reputation as a tough negotiator during the grocery union’s periodic showdowns with the region’s supermarket chains, has died. He was 89 and died in Manhattan Beach.

** Ethel Lund Pattison passed away September 19 at age 97, after a brief decline. Born on October 29, 1925, to Le Val Lund and Grace Brown Lund in Hollywood, in 1955, she settled in Manhattan Beach, where she and husband Syd raised their family. Celebration of Life to be held Friday, October 13, 1p.m. on the beach at the bottom of 4th Street and The Strand.

THIS WEEKEND “HOMETOWN FAIR” COMES TO TOWN (AGAIN):

The 51st Annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair

The 51st Annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair is a community fair with arts and crafts, food, games and entertainment. The fair will be held at Live Oak Park (on Valley Drive between 15th and 21st Streets) on Saturday, October 7th and Sunday, October 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Fair is fun for all ages. Great fair food, beautiful arts and crafts from hand selected vendors, free entertainment on the Main Stage and newly renamed Dietz Stage, games for kids of all ages, and, of course, the Kid’s Country are just some of the venues available for visitors. The goal of the community fair is to create a weekend event where locals can support each other as customers and operators of fun booths while raising funds for local charity organizations. This event is a Manhattan Beach tradition.

At Last, Manhattan Beach Strictly Regulates Where And How E-Bikes Can Be Used:

New regulations governing electric and motorized bicycles are now effective in Manhattan Beach, and offenders may face a range of fines.
The “urgency ordinance” became effective September 6 and contains safety rules including:

  • Prohibits riding on City sidewalks, plazas, grass areas, the Strand, parking structures owned or operated by the City, County, or State, and Veterans Parkway.
  • Prohibits riding at speeds over 15 miles per hour on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (i.e. Beach Bike Path), and maintains the current “Walk Only Zone” on both sides of the pier.
  • Requires wearing of properly strapped helmets for all riders under 18 years of age.
  • Requires riders to use bike lanes where possible, and on streets without bike lanes, to ride close to the right curb or edge of roadway.
  • Requires riders to ride in single file and not more than two abreast.
  • Prohibits riding on the back of a bicycle or e-bike without a seat.
  • Prohibits speeding, racing, or stunt activity.
  • Reaffirms requirements to yield to pedestrians at all times.

“Violations of this ordinance will result in a misdemeanor and a fine up to $500 for the first violation, $750 for the second violation within one year; and $1,000 for each additional violation within one year of the first violation,” according to a city press release. “If the violation is committed by a minor, the minor’s parents may be cited and fined for violations of the ordinance.”

“This commonsense approach to e-bikes is long overdue by the City!” said Howard K., a longtime Manhattan Beach resident and business owner.

Teams, schools, and individual walkers have raised $1,652,351 as of right now! The goal is $2,500,000, and that is reachable! Find your local school or go on the Skechers website and sponsor a team or walker! Better yet, raise funds yourself and walk it. You will never see so many happy faces supporting individual schools and programs for people with special needs – pieces of goodness.

Manhattan Beach Postal Carrier Attacked – Three Arrested:

Three males allegedly tried to break into a USPS carrier’s car, leading to a police chase culminating in a car crash and the defendants’ arrests. The incident happened at 5 p.m. on August 22. Police say the carrier delivered mail on the 2600 Block of Elm Street in Manhattan Beach when he heard smashing glass. The carrier observed two males in his car when he returned. Broken back windows and mailbags littered the floor. They yelled profanities at him when he asked what they were doing. They then entered a Chevrolet Silverado. A third man allegedly drove at the postal worker to hurt or frighten him. A USPS worker phoned MBPD after the suspects drove off. After a high-speed chase, patrol officers lost the vehicle near Redondo Beach. After a collision, MBPD officers spotted the Silverado on Aviation Boulevard at 6 p.m. MBPD caught the suspects as they fled the car.

In an era dominated by the gig economy and service-based industries, the DEMANDS for tips are on the rise, yet tipping itself remains far from ubiquitous. Walk into any cafe, order food from your favorite delivery app, or catch a ride with a rideshare service, and you’re likely to encounter prompts encouraging customers to tip generously. These digital nudges aim to foster a culture of gratitude, but are they genuinely translating into fair compensation for those providing services? A recent YouGov survey of 1,000 Americans revealed a stark reality: most people confine their tipping habits to just two scenarios – restaurants and hairdressers or barbers. While these are undoubtedly deserving recipients, the broader spectrum of service providers still struggles to secure a fair share. Hotel cleaners, concierges, Uber drivers, baristas, delivery drivers, and even bartenders often find themselves on the receiving end of minimal or nonexistent gratuities. How long will it be before the self-checkout stands at Ralph’s “ask” for tips?

Six years ago, Rachael Parker, MBPD Police Records Technician, was tragically killed in the Route 91 Harvest country music festival shooting. Rachael, 33 years old, was known for her cheerful and compassionate demeanor. According to the MBPD Instagram page, she served the Police Department and the Manhattan Beach community for nearly 10 years, working at the Front Desk of the Police Station. Rachael loved dogs – especially her two adopted dogs, Maddie and Izzy. She enjoyed baking, country music, and L.A. Kings Hockey.
